The cast seals it for me. I've always been the type to watch a film more for who's in it, and this has John Ritter, Jack Warden, Michael Richards and Gilbert Gottfried. Four superlatives (/Capt Benest)!

Music biopic double bill this weekend.

Bohemian Rhapsody (Now TV)

Perfunctory. "This happened, then this happened. Then another thing happened. Please stand still while I describe to you exactly how I feel." A wonderful performance from Rami Malek but his performance is emblematic of the whole film: just a facsimile of what Queen was, with nothing to say.

Love & Mercy (iPlayer)

The story of Brian Wilson's descent to madness in the 60s and redemption on the other side in the 80s. This was beautiful. A tortured, abused genius you want to root for. I really felt for him. I forget just how good Paul Dano is every time I see him, he just disappears into the role.

You pretty much nailed my thoughts on Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s the polar opposite in terms of enjoyment and quality of Rocketman (though I think Tarron’s lead performance is as impressive as Remi’s).

Been itching to see Love and Mercy and just need to find the time to do so.

I thought John Cusack was awful in Love and Mercy, couldn't get into his half at all. Paul Dano was awesome though, I was amazed at how he transformed into Brian.

I will agree with you a bit, it took me quite a while to get past Cusack and accept him as Wilson.

It doesn't help that Paul Dano had all the 60s clothes, hair and atmosphere to help sell the illusion, John Cusack sitting in a car in a black top dissapeared into the role about as inconspicuously as if he'd been played by Nicolas Cage or Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I also got annoyed when I realised they weren't going focus much on the part of his life where Dr Landy took over, it's not Brian's finest hour but it could've been it's own film it's so wild and interesting.

Doctor Sleep.

Kubrick is ace and Stephen King is shit. We all know that as established fact. This is Kubrick Shining and was far far better than it had any right to be. Brilliant stuff. Genuine scares for me whenever the Overlook was mentioned, given such an ominous presence. Ewan McGregor was excellent and Rebecca Ferguson was even better.

It's a great horror film and one of the best films of 2019. I hope Mike Flanagan keeps working in horror because he's already one of the best specialist horror directors that the genre has seen.

Doctor Sleep did not get the recognition at the box office. Bombed everywhere and I second it is far better then it had any right to be. Mike Flanagan is brilliant. Hope it becomes a cult classic in years to come.

I wasn't a fan at all. A horror film needs to be scary and this wasn't even close. The main villain was a joke and completely unthreatening. Her only characteristic was that she wore a hat. It felt more like an above average Marvel TV show than a sequel to one of the scariest films ever made. And the way it was shot and the colour grading made it look cheap.  But hey, each to their own.

For me, the main villain was the Overlook because the protagonist knew first hand how it messes up and ends lives. But yeah, I’m a Kubrick fanboy and revisiting the scariest film ever made in my opinion brought it back and didn’t feel like a pastiche.

There was one part near the start of Doctor Sleep that nearly ruined the whole film for me because it kept playing on my mind.I really wish they didn't put it in there as it's a particular weakness of mine but other than that I really enjoyed it. Strangely enough there was something that happens in Geralds Game that made me switch it off and I was really enjoying that too.

Looking at the box office numbers for it it's quite surprising that it did so poorly. A good horror with a pedigree and it being a sequel to a classic would have made me assume that good box office would be a banker.

I wasn't sure. I thought it might fall under the same bus that Blade Runner 2049 did. It was a sequel to a film that was nearly 40 years old and, while widely acknowledged as a masterpiece, that doesn't seem to make much difference to the majority of the demographics that dominate cinema going now. It's also worth noting that the box office and critical reception for both the originals was lukewarm too, so there are some parallels to both sequels.
