Factotum
Quote The Irishman is long isn't it? Could have watched more. Saw it on the big screen a week ago and it was pure bliss just watching that film slowly play out. Bit like Once Upon A Time for me in that you're allowed to really know that world and let it wash over you. KNIVES OUT is great. Rian Johnson is great. I'll take his stupid Star Wars film if it allows studios to trust him to do his own stuff. Edited November 28, 2019 by Factotum
Paid Members Chris B Posted November 28, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted November 28, 2019 Knives Out question, because I feel like I missed something. At the end, the detective says he knew what the maid had done right from the beginning, and we get a close-up of a spot of blood on her sneakers. I originally thought she'd gone before he killed himself, hadn't she? Although the timing suggests that she'd gone back and was aware but I also don't think we get confirmation that she knew he slit his own throat. What am I missing? Until I remembered the timing, I honestly came out thinking that there were deliberate plot-holes, and that part of the fun was figuring out what actually happened. But the blood-spot confused me. I went for a pee-break at one point (just after she went home after being asked to become the Watson), so I'm guessing that's where we saw that. In a mini series I'd have taken another 3 hours, in a film to be consumed in one sitting I'd need two cans of Monster and an IV drip filled with espresso to handle much more. What wonderful chemistry De Niro and Al have in this though. Pacino gets the showier role for sure but he doesn't waste a bit of it. 2002 film student me was marking out at De Niro being besties with Pesci and Pacino in the same film. I felt in the cinema fully immersed. Haven't watched it on Netflix yet but I get your point about in that context, maybe a mini series is best. Perhaps he'll do a Tarantino, who re-edited the Hateful Eight to a 4 part mini series, adding in bits etc. Could certainly work!
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted November 28, 2019 Author Paid Members Share Posted November 28, 2019 The thing is, The Hateful Eight was shite and might have benefitted from such a rejig (I don't know, I have no wish to revisit it). But The Irishman, as I just discovered, is a masterpiece. So Scorsese shouldn't do anything with it.
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted November 28, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted November 28, 2019 I know it’s a Christmas advert, but think this belongs. The sequel we never knew we needed https://youtu.be/NxmnUSVWCOk
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted November 28, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted November 28, 2019 The Irishman is as shite as Goodfellas. Absolutely bored me to the point where I was applying for a competition to win a new Duvet online. Knives Out is fucking outstanding though. SuperBacon
The Irishman I had to remind myself that I posted in the trailer thread when it came out that it looked shit. I was wrong. It is an incredible film. So, so pleased I was wrong.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted November 28, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted November 28, 2019 (edited) I don't know what's wrong with me, lads. I must be some sort of celluloid ignoramus. I love Casino, but hate Goodfellas and sat through The Irishman under duress. Even my best mate said I was 'r' worded - and he hates that word - this morning when I told him I thought it was gik. SuperBacon
Probably the lack of rimming in it I suspect (sorry for the small spoiler)Â
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted November 28, 2019 Author Paid Members Share Posted November 28, 2019 I'm not a massive Scorsese fan myself but I felt like this was the film I'd always been waiting for him to make. Certainly one of the best of the year.
Keith Houchen
But what if Jimmy Hoffa wore spandex? You didn’t think it could be improved well there you go. #TeamMarty
