Apparently The Who played in Verona in 2007.

You didn't go to see The Who did you?

Nooo! If they were playing my back garden, I'd probably shut the curtains! You needn't have looked beyond football for the answer: I was in Italy for the start and finish to the 'Calciopoli' season i.e. the one immediately following the match-fixing revelations. Juve were in Serie B with a points deduction but still wrapped up the title with room to spare. So on the final day, they played a weakened team at home to Spezia, who needed a win to have any chance of staying up. Of course, they conspired to let the away side win 3-2, rendering Hellas' entertaining (and cheap to enter) victory over Bari at the Bentegodi academic, because it meant they'd end up in a relegation 'play-out' anyway.

After I left Verona, Spezia won the tie on aggregate to save their skins and condemn Hellas to what was then called Serie C. Although the Veneto side got revenge of sorts in an Italian Cup tie a few years ago, nobody in Italy really cares that much about the Coppa, so this league meeting was the first real chance for retribution since that fateful summer 5 and a half years back, and lo and behold... a goal in the last 10 minutes means they came up trumps, and earned me 20 bonus points! Not enough to put me in the title mix or safely mid-table, but it should stave off the spectre of possibly finishing last, at least for now.

Without the D2D anomaly, TildeGuy~! would've been top scorer on 9 points, but nobody else even reached double figures this week. Lawz sat this one out, so sivy was able to extend the gap at the wrong end of the standings by a further 2 points despite being lowest scorer in this round. At the top, stunstone increases his lead by one point, back to a healthy 16.

So why the poor performances then? Well, scores after Saturday didn't look too bad, considering there had only been 6 of the 10 matches. And although the very last game, PSG's narrow triumph at home to Lille, proved fruitful, the three Cup results in between were anything but. First Chelsea were held at Griffin Park, then Spurs lost at Elland Road - special mention to SNRN10 for guessing the exact score there - before Liverpool were overturned at a freezing Boundary Park to cap a memorable day in the world's oldest knockout competition.

Beforehand, the other continental games had been a bit of a mixed bag, whilst the remaining Cup ties on Saturday all went the expected way by the odd goal, earning a lot of participants one-pointers, but rarely much more than that. Right, that's enough because you'll have noticed this is already late and it's about time we got on with the next round's thread.
