Fog Dude
Happy New Year everyone! Where to start then? The final scores went into the original post soon after Saints-Arsenal finished, with the updated table following a couple of hours later. The midweek fixtures on Boxing Day and New Year's Day all passed off very straightforwardly, but the regular Saturday ones were not without incident. The game at Cuckoo Farm was called off the night before it was due to take place, but in the Highlands the visit of Hearts fell at very short notice, as did the planned Westcountry clash at Whaddon Road. Even though our D2D match went ahead, it was marred by a controversial refereeing error. Luckily the Owls didn't go on to win, meaning MVP RULZ got his turn wrong, and allowed 19 other players to claim 2 bonus points each. As per usual, that was the sign of a poor round as he managed just 11 points, making him joint second lowest scorer along with niff, who was one of 3 participants not to get any exact scores from the 27 outcomes. The other was Lawz, who was not only the sole person to not even make it into double figures (though he failed to bet on today's League One games for some reason), he was this round's outright worst performer and has been cast 22 points adrift at the wrong end of the standings. Equal top scorer this time out was steve, but the haul of 25 wasn't enough to trouble the higher placings. The two leaders are unchanged, but the chasm between ultimo and stunstone is now a whopping two dozen points. In the EPL, West Brom's win at QPR actually caught a lot of people out, likewise the Gunners' failure to win at St Mary's. A surprising proportion of pickers saw Fulham's reverse at home to Swansea coming, but didn't foresee Chelsea's triumph at Goodison Park, while City's victory at Carrow Road was good for a lot of one-pointers, but nobody could've thought it would be a seven-goal thriller. The remaining two top-flight matches finished 0-4 - of those, a few did pick that scoreline for United's trip to Wigan, but no-one reckoned on Villa's terrible form from just before Christmas carrying on for another six days. Outside of the D2D, there were 4 further Championship fixtures, and all ended in narrow home wins, which as you'd expect returned a good number of points for most. The third tier, in contrast, produced five away wins, of which four were also by the odd goal, which didn't prove quite as fruitful as the division above. I don't think anybody got the exact score from League Two's only surviving weekend game, but the other matches at that level were all close, with the Boxing Day home wins being more useful than New Year's away ones. The Conference fixtures yielded few points as the favourites lost in all of them. Equally in the SPL, the one result came as a shock as Celtic suffered defeat at Easter Road. Speaking of upsets, the next round should contain at least a handful as it's a bumper week where all the games are cup ties. A new thread will be up tomorrow morning with those for your delectation.
