Exclusive: Police Investigate Alleged Racist Abuse Of Demba Ba At Wear-Tyne Derby

By Ruth Holliday Location: Stadium Of Light

Northumbria Police is investigating allegations that Newcastle United's Demba Ba was racially abused during the Wear-Tyne derby after a tip-off from Sky Tyne and Wear.

One of our regular site users alerted us to the apparent comment from a Sunderland fan during the match at the Stadium of Light.

It could allegedly be seen in footage broadcast on Sky Sports 1.

We passed details of the allegation on to Northumbria Police so they could investigate.

Chief Supt Steve Neill said: "We have received a report of racist language being used at the Sunderland versus Newcastle game.

"Northumbria Police will not tolerate racism in any form and enquiries into the report are being carried out."

Racism was certainly on it's way to being eradicated from the game but it appears it's making a nasty resurgence. I feel that the way recent occurrences of racism in football has been reported on hasn't helped. The press have used this as just another way to sell newspapers (shock, horror) and the sheer amount of coverage seems to be planting a seed in the mind of morons, others have simply used the incidents to add to their tribalistic beliefs about their clubs.

It appears the only solution is to come down extremely hard on racists on the pitch and in the stands. John Terry/Luis Suarez were perfect opportunities to show that the FA takes racism seriously, making a real example of them could have sent a resonating statement that racism will not be tolerated. People need to know that there are serious sanctions in place for those that use racial abuse. Obviously there were complications in both well reported on pitch scenarios, but I feel the FA could have grown a pair and made a statement- I say this as a Chelsea fan.

When?

Let me rephrase that- I can't really comment on racism in football abroad. I understand there are still major problems in the Balkan regions for example.

Before the Terry/Suarez incidents, racism in English football was well on it's way to being eradicated. We had come on leaps and bounds since the 80s' and incidents of racism on the pitch were virtually unheard of. Incidents of racism in the stands, whilst still present, were becoming rarer and rarer and involved less and less people. Unfortunately, now as it's at the forefront of sports reporting, racism in the English game seems to be back on the increase.

Racism was NEVER on the verge of being eradicated in football at all. On the pitch, incidents have been few and far between for a few decades now. But in the stands, things have improved, certainly, but close to eradication? Nonsense.

Yeah, not close to being gone on the local football pitch. I used to watch a local all-Pakistani Sunday league team (I believe they are called S.A.S.A) on the pitches few minutes away from my house, and they used to get absolute belters in everyone of their matches. Ref must bloody hear it if I can hear it on the sidelines. Scandalous really in this day and age.
