Paid Members Surf Digby Posted January 7, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted January 7, 2014 I've been going through another ABBA phase recently. The missus dropped off early one night over Christmas so I ended up watching about three hours of ABBA programs on TV (with an incredibly passionate Pete Waterman), and I've dug out the CDs and DVDs to play since. Â This morning, the CD of Anni-Frid's second solo album dropped through my door. It's less rock-orientated than her first one, and is just a good, solid slice of 80s synthesiser driven pop that would sit happily alongside Phil Collins and Nik Kershaw. In particular it showcases her voice a lot better than the first solo album. Â As I'm flicking through the booklet I notice that Benny and Bjorn have written one of the songs for her, and there are a couple by Kirsty McColl. I then notice that one is credited to "S. Adamson", and I only had to listen to the intro to realise that not only was it definitely written by Stuart Adamson (of Big Country, and a massive fucking hero of mine), but his trademark guitar playing is all over the song too. This has absolutely made my day. Â http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQguQspowp8
NEWM
I'm feeling quite late to these, but I heard Postmodern Jukebox for the first time today and they're fucking marvellous. The lead singer has a gorgeous voice and she's canny pretty as well. Anyway, they do swing, country and motown covers of new songs, so it's a bit like hearing The Baseballs for the first time where you gobble up everything they've got out there then get bored pretty quick, but I'm in the excited stage still.  Some of the best, but it's all great.  - Beauty and a Beat - This was the first one I heard as I didn't know the original song so didn't know it was a cover. Knowing that only made it better though. It kicks off the latest Jason Agnew whatsNXT podcast if anybody listens to that, which is what set me off down this path. - Call Me Maybe -  - Blurred Lines -  - Roar - - I've listened to this about ten times through already, it's so so much better than the Katy Perry record they're not even in the same galaxy. Anyway, there's loads more on Youtube and probably not a duffer amongst them. Paid Members Carbomb Posted January 31, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted January 31, 2014 I just discovered Postmodern Jukebox a couple of days ago. That lead singer has a great voice, is stunning and a great performer. Â Oddly, it was their Mexican mariachi-style cover of Avicii and Aloe Blacc's "Wake Me Up" that hooked me. It really was a brilliant piece of work, especially as her vocals suited the Spanish lyrics and central American style of singing. Instrumentation was really slick as well. d-d-d-dAz
So, I make music. And, soon, my 'album' Stories of Love and Ghosts will be available on Spotify, Itunes and other places like that. Â Until then, please check out my new twitter and soundcloud pages. Cheers. Â That's my first and last ever shill on here, I promise.. Â ...Until next time. Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted June 10, 2014 Moderators Share Posted June 10, 2014 I gave it a go, but it didn't really do it for me. Â Best of luck though dude!
MECox
So how about that new Anathema album? A billion stars. Â Playing their first ever shows in Australia in August. I'd probably fall at Lee Douglas' feet and declare my undying love, but I bought the wife a ticket
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted June 11, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted June 11, 2014 (edited) I've just downloaded on my phone. I'm planning on strolling for lunch with it blaring. Can't wait! Â EDIT: Aye, it's quite good. The 3 parts of The Lost Song are quality and I liked the last couple of tracks. Paid Members Surf Digby Posted September 17, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted September 17, 2014 It dawned on me this evening that I don't think I've ever heard anything by Grace Jones. I YouTubed a couple of her songs at random, but they didn't do much for me. They all seemed so safe in comparison to her image. Â Is there anything in particular I should give a listen to? Merzbow
She did an ace cover of Warm Leatherette, a song about getting a lob on over car crashes. Â
Paid Members Surf Digby Posted September 18, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted September 18, 2014 That's more like it. I won't go as far as saying I enjoyed it, but that mix of disco, funk and deadpan spoken word is exactly what I was expecting from her. I can imagine her wearing long velvet gloves and staring at someone while she's singing that. Â Oh well, that's her ticked off the list. Just bought a bunch of Stevie Wonder albums because I've heard nowhere near enough of his stuff.
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted September 19, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) Check out Fulfillingness' First Finale, if you haven't purchased it, Surf. My favourite from that period in the 70s where he's consistently pumping out great material.  Leonard Cohen's new album isn't up to his very high standards, or as complete as Old Ideas. Still, there are a few stand outs, like Cohen belting out Samson in New Orleans and the long awaited Born in Chains. Too much plonky plonk keyboarding, which put me off Dear Heather, too. Paid Members Surf Digby Posted September 19, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted September 19, 2014 I've got FFF, Innervisions and Talking Books on the way, and my eyes on Songs In the Key of Life and Hotter Than July
shep
Seventies Stevie is as good as it gets, Innervisions is probably my favourite. Â Harking back to Grace Jones, check out her version of La Vie En Rose, a wonderful Tom Moulton production that is pure Balearic sunset material.
