The History of Friday Night Thriller

Friday Night Thriller 1 2006

The show opened with the first ever Last Chance Battle Royal to get a spot in the inaugaral Crazy Cruiser 8. The battle royal was won by the mysterious Fashion Dan who looked a lot like Danny Hope, if Danny Hope were to wear a mask. Now Hope wore a mask because he had tried to qualify for the Cruiser 8 the previous month and had been unsuccessful. As a result of the controversy, Darkside (the man Fashion Dan eliminated) challenged him to a singles match immediately afterwards which ended in a double countout.

Bubblegum faced Johnny Phere in the next match which was the culmination of a rivalry that had begun 12 months earlier when Bubblegum made his GPW debut. Both mens profiles were raised after this match and many years later they would be in the main event of the 5th Anniversary supershow.

Joseph Hayes hoped to continue his undefeated streak and qualify for the CC8 in the process as he took on a pre Rockstar Spud. The action was fastpaced with many high risk and innovative moves as both men tried to earn a spot in the upcoming tournament. The fans began cheering for Hayes in this one despite his dirty tactics beginning Hayes journey to become one of the most popular wrestlers in GPW. Many said this was the MOTN.

For the last few months, Flood had been chasing the affections of GPW original Roxi, Roxi tired of this challenged Flood to a singles match at the Thriller event to finally put Flood in his place. Flood stopped trying with Roxi after this match but his quest to find an eligible woman would continue into the new year.

In the main event, Dirk Feelgood went one on one for the first time with the reigning International Heavyweight Champion Heresy. This was a terrific back and forth main event where it became clear that both men would do anything to be the champion. Heresy tried to retain via dq by hitting Dirk with a brick but Dirk countered Heresy's pin into a pin of his own and won the Heavyweight title. The then Monaco Ballroom erupted in admiration of this achievement as Dirk had finally won the "Big One" and went on to be the top man in GPW for nearly 1 year.

Friday Night Thriller 2 2007

Thriller 2 started with a tremendous opener as Mike Holmes teamed up with Lethal Dose (Jack Toxic and Cyanide) to take on WKD (Chris Echo, Matt "D Lyrium" Taylor and "Super" Sam Bailey in a six man tag team match which set the bar pretty high for the rest of the show. It was a perfect showcase for these 6 great stars who went on to bigger and better things in the years that followed.

The late Dom Travis made his Thriller debut against GPW Alumni The Juggernaught in a classic big man match which continued the shows momentum.

Darkside, the reigning Heavyweight Champion at the time faced former champion Dirk Feelgood prior to the interval which continued a rivalry that had begun at the previous show. Darkside had upset Feelgood and won the title although many argued that Darkside hadnt actually pinned Dirk to win the title, he had pinned an impostor so both men had a lot to prove. Nevertheless controversy reared its ugly head as not one but 2 impostor Dirks interfered and Dirk was denied a second time. The rivalry was far from over.

The main event was set up while the show was in progress. Joey Hayes had won the British title from DDL in a classic triple threat match at Collision Course back in July and many of Hayes foes and even friends staked their claim to being the number contender live in the ring. GPW management in an unprecendented step decided to book a 30 man rumble match later in the show which included the whole roster. It was this match that proved that just about anything can and does happen at Friday Night Thriller!!

Friday Night Thriller 3 2009

Friday Night Thriller returned in 2009 after a years hiatus with another outstanding night of action. We kicked things off with Danny Hope taking on Cameron Kraze in a top notch singles contest although Kraze would have a bigger role to play later in the night.

In the next segment, Martin Kirby, RJM, Joey Hayes and even Jak Domitrescu tried to convince the fans that they should be the Fans Choice to be in the Crazy Cruiser 8 2009 Tournament. Kirby got the nod but the three men quickly joined forces against Domitrescu and his allies the Eastern Bloc in a impromptu 6 man tag team match.

Dirk Feelgood was scheduled to face Dylan Roberts in a Crazy Cruiser 8 qualifier but in a remarkable turn of events, Feelgood offered to lose the match voluntarily. Roberts was obviously not happy about this but it was all a ruse as Cameron Kraze returned and aligned himself with Dirk Feelgood giving Roberts the match by disqualification. Feelgood and Kraze became known as The Master Plan, one of the all time great factions in GPW.

Si Valour faced Cyanide in a big man match continuing the trend from Friday Night Thriller 2 in a underrated classic.

Fox Carter won the Last Chance Battle Royal and in the process made a huge impact on the GPW roster eliminating most of the men singlehanded.

Finally in the main event reigning British Champion Sam Bailey faced CJ Banks with the title on the line. This was the culmination of a fantastic rivalry and did not disappoint as both men went all out to leave with the belt and had one of the best matches in GPW history.

Friday Night Thriller 4 2010

Danny Hope once again opened Friday Night Thriller with a great bout against Fox Carter. Carter had been the main obstacle in Hope's mission to win a singles title in GPW and finally overcame his nemesis to officially become number one contender.

Current Number One Contender Cyanide kickstarted his dominance of GPW by taking out 3 opponents in a handicap match without even breaking a sweat. Who knows what Cyanide will do at this years event??

Speaking of dominance, Paradise Lost (Heresy and Kastor Levay) successfully defended their titles against the Eastern Bloc and were so devastating that many of the members haven't been seen in GPW since! Jak Domitrescu makes his return to GPW tonight but will he be the same man??

The next match was without doubt the match of the night as El Ligero faced Jack Gallagher. Gallagher currently one of the best if not THE best wrestler in the UK today tried to make a name for himself at the expense of the veteran Ligero, who was on top form as usual and no matter the result, one thing was clear, Gallagher was one to watch.

CJ Banks was still British Champion at Thriller 4 after winning the title at Thriller 3 and was taking on all comers. However, after losing to Martin Kirby in a non title match the previous month, Banks refused to face him for the title at Thriller and made an open challenge to anyone BUT Kirby to face him that night. Out came the rookie El Hindley Hombre to accept the challenge and after using a few of Martin Kirby's signature moves managed to defeat Banks in a shocking upset. However, Banks refused to acknowledge the bout as a title defence and left with the belt continuing the unpredictable nature of Thriller.

In the main event of the evening, Damon Leigh faced Dave Mastiff in a semi final match for the vacant Heavyweight title. Mastiff was also making his GPW debut at the event and was very impressive. Both men went all out in a hard hitting affair continuing the trend of fantastic Thriller main events and set the stage for the final the following month.

With regards to the sound, we had been promised the use of the venues built in PA system and when we tested out music/mics prior to the show it sounded great. Somewhere between the testing and the start of the show something on the sound desk had been changed and despite trying to solve it we had to switch back to our old faithful PA system at the intermission. It's a shame really as the venue PA sounded fantastic.
