The Natural
Dana White won't be happy that one of his least favourite fighters in Roy Nelson won. I wasn't a fan of Nelson to begin with but the biggest reason I like him is his toughness and iron chin. I also like him because to look at him, he doesn't look like the usual MMA fighter. I really want Nelson/Hunt to happen at some point.
David
Another nice little fightcard. Again, I'll post my fight by fight scores;  Waldburger vs Cattone  Round 1 - I scored the 1st frame for Cattone. It was very close, but the difference for me was the flurries by Cattone, and the fact that he took Waldburgers back. 10-9 Cattone  Round 2 - Obviously this fight turned on one punch basically. Cattone got dropped and then threw his left arm into a choke, and lost via submission. Good win for Waldburger.  Pichel vs Khabilov  Holy shit, Khabilov looks like a real prospect, doesn't he? I always get edgy when we see these European fighters from that region for the first time. There's very little tape on them, if any, and they bring something new to the table. Those suplexes looked vicious. Unlike the MacDonald/Diaz fight, Khabilov wasn't throwing around a guy who was smaller than him.  Frightening stuff. It'll be interesting to see where he goes from here.  Bedford vs Vinicius  Round 1 - All Bedford for me. He was winning the stand up and got a great takedown and managed to score with solid ground control. Not quite a 10-8 round, but close to it. 10-9 Bedford  It'll be interesting to see where Bedford goes from here as well. He looks useful, but I'll reserve judgement until I see him face some stiffer competition.  Head vs Pyle  A decent bout, but another short one. Pyle looked as though he had all he could handle in this fight, but that was a sweet knee. Superb stuff and a good win by Pyle.  Brookins vs Poirier  A cracking fight to kick off the main card. It was a real back & forth war. I know that Poirier is touted as being a real prospect, and he may very well be, but he has to sort out his striking defence before he gets clipped and put away. He's already shown that he can get caught in submissions when he got tapped by Jung in his last fight, and now you can add a shaky standup defence to that.  An exciting fighter, but he has too many holes to go very far I feel.  Del Rosario vs Barry  Round 1 - Pretty even on the feet, with Del Rosario scoring the all-important takedown and maintaining solid ground control. 10-9 Del Rosario  It was obvious that someone was going to get put away at some point in this fight. I personally fancied Del Rosario to get Barry to the ground again and pull of a submission. He's shown that he's capable of that, and Barry has been known to get caught in such a way. A great shot by Barry initially to rock Del Rosario though, and that last hook was clinical and sick looking.  Ricci vs Smith  Round 1 - This round basically personifies how Colton Smith has been winning fights since the season started. He takes people down, and whilst he never looks dangerous on the ground, he does enough to wear them out and keep them there. He completely dominated Ricci in this round. 10-9 Smith  Round 2 - The big talking point here was Mazagatti missing that groin shot. How the fuck did he manage that? Surely he must be due to get cut from his job? Aside from that, this round was basically the same as the first. 10-9 Smith  Round 3 - More of the same. 10-9 Smith  My scorecard - 30-27 Smith  A quick word on Colton Smith. This guy doesn't interest me in the slightest. He may have won the show, but I see Ricci having a more established UFC career down the line. Smith is basically a wrestler with no finishing skills. Once he gets someone to the ground he really doesn't have the skill to put them away. Unless he improves greatly I doubt I'll have much interest in seeing him fight.  Oh, and he's also in the army. Did anyone notice that?  Nelson vs Mitrione  This fight went as I thought it would. Roy is the guy who is sitting in the upper-mid level of the division in the UFC. He's never going to crack into the upper level and be able to realistically compete with the very top heavyweights in the company, but he will be able to knock off contenders and basically piss Dana White off in the process.  All in all, pretty decent night of fights. The Natural
Some great KO's on the show. I agree with the UFC's decision to give Pat Barry the Knockout of the Night bonus. Any other night Rustam and Wolverine would have won.
Paid Members wandshogun09 Posted December 16, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 16, 2012 As much as I bum Pat Barry, I'd have given Khabilov the knockout bonus personally. There were a handful of really deserving contenders though so it's not like I have a problem with the choice or anything. Â I forgot about Mazzagatti. Christ. He's been relatively quiet on the reffing cock ups front for the last year or so but this was bad. Baffling how he didn't see the kick to the bollocks. On the replay he appeared to be looking right at it. I don't think it made much difference to the result in this case but still awful reffing. Â He won't get sacked off this, especially being his first howler in a good while. It's not the UFC's call anyway it's up to the athletic commissions. And they hire shite like Kim Winslow so I think Mazz is safe. Â Speaking of shit refs, the one in the Khabilov fight was late stopping that fight. He was way out of position and so didn't recognise that Pichel was knocked out from the suplex. He took at least 3 hard shots on the ground which he shouldn't have. Who was the ref again? textonly
Personally I'd give Khabilov Knockout of the Year for that suplex. I liked it even more than Barboza vs. Etim. It was the most giddifying thing I've seen on UFC in ages.
Paid Members wandshogun09 Posted December 16, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 16, 2012 Nothing tops Barboza's KO of Etim for me. Almost a year later and that's still unbelievable to watch. Â Khabilov would almost certainly be 2nd though. Ben Alloway's Seagal kick from Friday would rank highly as well.
Paid Members Bus Surfer Posted December 16, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 16, 2012 Yeah, some poor Referee decisions last night. More shocking though is the fact that Kim Winslow was no where near any of them! Â Agree with David on Colton Smith. It's all well and good being able to lay on some TUF guys for 15 minutes, but the level of competition will multiply tenfold for him now. I can't see him making much of an impact, and that drab style isn't gonna do him any favours. Anyone catch the little awkwardness when Colton was awarded his Harley? He was paying no attention, which led to the presenting guy yelling "Hey!" at him, and then Dana giving him a few words whilst looking peeved. Â the TUF final aside, the rest of the show was littered with impressive finishes, and the fights in general were very good. Â I'd also have given Khabilov KO of the night, too. Barry's hook landed like a complete bomb and it was spectacular, but those Suplexes were something else. Had the Ref been on his toes, the fight could have been stopped immediately after the third Suplex landed. Nasty stuff.
Shane O' Mac Version 2
Had to watch this in fragmented parts, unbelievably my satellite TV provider showed the TUF 14 Finale live at 1pm on Sunday afternoon and have no replays for it at all for the upcoming week. Crazy. Â The Facebook fights were something else. Elliot vs Papazian was the best flyweight fight I've seen in the UFC. They showed that 125ers can be aggressive and not just dance and shadowbox around the Octagon for 15-25 minutes. Elliot showed insane heart by taking a big knee like that and coming back to absolutely dominate. Some MMA fans on Dana White's Facebook have no idea how to add up, they were raging at the 30-25 scores given at the end. Personally, my round scores were 10-9 Elliot, 10-9 Elliot and 10-8 Elliot for a final score of 30-26. Didn't catch the whole Cofer-Rio fight, because honestly I was taking a shit through most of it, but from what I saw it appeared that Cofer was winning the fight until Rio locked in the last minute armbar. Lovely stuff. Hugo Viana finished off the Facebook portion very well, he stalked Duran and appeared to hurt him every time he landed, love the killer instinct, and the final punch was a NASTY KO. Â Waldburger/Catone continued the trend of exciting, violent fights on Fuel. Despite definitively losing, Catone looks like an absolute beast at welterweight, he's massive and has carried that power down well. Very smart finish by TJ, I think he deserved a step up in competition after that performance. He's an absolute wizard on the ground, and acquits himself well in other areas too. Â Khabilov's suplexes...holy shit! Definitely one of the more impressive KOs of the year, and Pichel is a pretty good fighter in my book, so to see him get dominated like that was a statement. Alloway's kick still leads in the KO stakes for me, a strike always beats a slam (except Rampage's powerbomb). Â Missed Bedford/Vinicius and Pyle/Head due to leaving the house, but I read that they were two more impressive finishes, so that'll be fun to watch when I can source a video. Â Poirier vs. Brookins was a really wild one-round fight. That's the type of one round fight I'd give FOTN too (yeah, I'm still a bit perplexed that the decent Penner/Donovan round beat out 3 back and forth barnburners for FOTN at FX 6). Pity I had to watch it in Spanish, you don't realise how much the announcers enhance a broadcast until they're not there. The Spanish guys excitedly jabber about everything, takes away from the drama. While it was undoubtedly exciting, I swear Brookins has the worst striking defence I've ever seen, I think he's even gotten worse since the TUF 12 Finale. He always has his hands way down and his chin way up, I'm surprised he doesn't get viciously KTFO more often. Â Barry vs. Del Rosario was kinda heartwarming, well as heartwarming as a huge KO can be. Barry has really tightened up his ground game, but I loved how the second round was pretty much, "fuck the ground game" and unloading with massive hooks, looked like Barry was putting his full body weight into each one. That's MMA, folks, got to be prepared for everything. I'm glad they kept Barry around despite his record, one of the most likable fighters I've seen. Â Missed Colton vs. Ricci, but from the play by play report it sounds like one of the worst fights of the year, pretty much the anti- Whittaker/Scott. Don't think I'll bother with it. Â Meathead vs. Nelson. So Nelson scores the KO, and most people have said, "Well, the outcome was never in doubt". True enough, but I personally thought Mitrione was winning the exchanges, or at the very least was comfortably holding his own until he got clipped with the uppercut. The silver lining for Mitrione is that even though it's a second straight loss, he likely got some goodwill with Dana back for taking the short notice fight, as Dana was pissed that he didn't want to fight Cormier. Â Overall, great show, especially when the loss of Guillard/Varner didn't seem to harm its quality. A full MMA weekend delivers and goes down a treat! Barearse
I know its never going to happen....BUT Â I really wish Pat Barry could be Heavyweight Champ one day. Guy is a legend. It seems like he's massive respected and a very humble person. Go HD!!!!!
Shane O' Mac Version 2
I was surprised Barry was so close to a .500 record, I know he had struggled as of late, but he was 7-5 before this win. Â I like Barry, but he should really go for 205. Someone (Rogan?) was saying he couldn't make 205 and was the perfect candidate for a 235 division, but he looks to be carrying around enough body fat to make that cut. Had the Ref been on his toes, the fight could have been stopped immediately after the third Suplex landed. Nasty stuff.  It was an excellent performance by Smith, he could pretty much only win one way and he nailed it. His army shit grates one me, but i wanted to see pretty boy Ricci have a slap, i dunno of the footage of him and Rory buying clothes, or him saying he was gutted that he'd missed his friends getting new haircuts when he was on the show, but i was glad to see him get dragged down...he'll do alright at 155 though i think.  Smith's in that awkward position now where he's basically gotta learn to be a well rounded MMA fighter under a closely scrutinised microscope, hes clearly got a solid base but if he figths someone that can shut down his wrestling game he's gonna be fucked.  Khabilov's KO has taken my award for 'UFC Debut of the Year', until Saturday i was between Jimi Manuwa and Abel Trujilo, but Khabilov takes it. That was just insane. I've mentioned on this forum a few times about this influx of Russian fighters, the UFC are slow catching on but they are taking over in Bellator, they all seem pretty emotionless and have that cliche coldness about them but they are some dangerous muthafuckers.
