Just look how long it took Rikishi and The Godfather to get the right gimmick.

Rikishi was a former tag team champion and worked on WrestleManias and SummerSlam PPVs before he became Rikishi and The Godfather worked with everyone from the Ultimate Warrior and The Undertaker before he scored the role of a pretend pimp. I'm sure most of the roster would give both bollocks to have the career they had before becoming established characters.

Exactly and with the case of The Godfather that gimmick evolved from his early Nation days, it was only allowed to evolve because he was getting TV and PPV exposure in reasonable feuds and storylines in a decent stable. If he debuted as The Godfather in 1998 having not been a recognised character or even if he debuted the character from being a nobody occasionally jobbing on TV, it would never have gotten over.

Except Mahal did actually come in with an angle and story, character and hook pre-debut and an association with an over act.

Well, the thing is they did and they didn't. They gave him a gimmick, but no substance or character. He just showed up, shouted at Khali, kept doing it for weeks, Khali eventually turned and beat him- then he became a jobber. It was a bit half-arsed I thought.

Not saying he didn't have a story. The Usos had a story when they debuted but they were still just the latest guys to turn up. The stories flopped because no one cared. Mahals was especially stupid as they should've known that story was geared to 1 section of the crowd and should've used the videos to try and get the rest of the crowd to have some interest in the start.

I think the Jinder Mahal/Khali storyline fell apart when Khali clearly didn't know what was going on and was unable to sell the story properly. But more than that, the character Jinder came in with was a hindrance because he was a low-rent Alberto Del Rio rip-off six months after Del Rio debuted. Alberto was doing the evil rich foreigner gimmick against Rey Mysterio and Edge, Mahal was doing it against Yoshi Tatsu. If the forced bodyguard thing with Khali had worked, it might have set him apart. But it didn't, and nor did anything Jinder himself did, and nobody had any backup ideas.
