King Pitcos Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 I've ordered a cheap generic Android tablet http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007V5XL94 Â Still waiting on it to arrive, but plenty of you are au fait with the OS and the available apps. What do you recommend? Â I'm already planning on using iPlayer, Netflix, anything like that would be nice to know about. Â I'm not a big fan of touchscreen games, playing GTA 3 on it (no idea if it actually runs on that tablet) would do my nut in. I'm happy to give simpler stuff, like Tetris and Angry Birds, a go. Â I've had a look for wrestling stuff on Google Play and it seems like there's just a load of apps for newzsites and then loads of "THIS IS AN APP FOR THE BEST ZACK RYDER WALLPAPER" type stuff. Anything decent on there? Â I'm also after a screenwriting app, but it seems like the ones that exist are a bit shit and a nightmare to sync/export to computer so I'm as well just with a decent word-processing app that will allow me to send documents to my PC and/or copy and paste text into emails. Â Beyond that, I don't know. I won't be using it with 3G, so applications that require Internet connectivity whilst out-and-abouting are no good to me really... But I will be using it as a travel distraction so interesting stuff that doesn't need an Internet connection is welcome. Â Is there already a thread about Android things?

Paid Members PunkStep Posted June 28, 2012 Paid Members Posted June 28, 2012 You might surprise yourself with GTA3, runs very well on Android and the touch screen controls aren't bad actually. Â Angry Birds in Space is fantastic. Also get World of Goo, and Sonic CD (the underratrd Mega CD game) is also worth a bash.
Paid Members Carbomb Posted June 29, 2012 Paid Members Posted June 29, 2012 If nothing else, get Barcode Beasties. Some guy remembered the Barcode Battler and made a pretty good app based on it. You just use your tablet's camera to scan bar and QR codes.
Paid Members Chris B Posted June 29, 2012 Paid Members Posted June 29, 2012 Since you're getting more into comics, I seriously recommend Comixology. Also, for your less legal needs, Pro Comic Rack, which lets you read .cbr files.
Wideload Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 The following are all ace; Â AppBrain - for discovering new apps, with suggestions based on what you have on your device already CameraZoom FX - a really nice alternative camera CamScanner - for turning photos into PDFs ComicRack - GREAT comic reader, paid version is a bit steep but they have an ad supported freebie Flipboard - News, Facebook and Twitter with a good interface, I prefer it to the FB app Hide It Pro - for hiding your porn. Appears as Audio Manager, which also works as an actual volume manager Infinite Design - good drawing tool N7player - great music player, I love the interface Office Suite Pro - for Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The store possibly still has it at 69p as opposed to a completely ridiculous price. Good though. Quell/Quell Reflect - Cool puzzle TuneIn Radio - Loads of radio stations from around the world. Only use if on Wi-Fi or an unlimited data plan X-plore - Best file manager I've tried Bunny Shooter - really enjoyable casual game, if you like Angry Birds etc.

The idea of that sounded pretty lame to me when I was a kid back in '92 and it doesn't appeal any more now...   Anyway, so, fuck that other thread.  Evernote is easily the best note taking / memopad type app.  Poweramp is the best music player I've used.  MX Player is the best video player I've found  Orientation Control is a must if, like me, you hate fucking auto-rotate and wish to control it a bit better. Not sure if that is as much of an issue on a tablet though.  Draw Something is brilliant. I'm guessing you've probably heard of it, but it's basically like Pictionary. You play back and forth with peeps online.  TED app is good.. Just an easy way to access all the TED talks, which are great if you've never watched any. A collection of fucking smart and articulate people talking about shit they know across pretty much any topics.
Paid Members Carbomb Posted June 29, 2012 Paid Members Posted June 29, 2012 I got Catch for a notepad app, it's excellent. Also, Pulse is good for putting news in an easy-to-consume format on your phone - you just enter in the sites you want regular news from.
Paid Members Halitosis Romantic Posted June 29, 2012 Paid Members Posted June 29, 2012 I've got a Kindle Fire that I've mainly used for books (I have a shitload of mobi files, if anyone wants any) and Songza, but I'm totally going to do an app audit based on this thread.
aaron Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Botchamania soundboard! Â I've developed a few Android apps. I might write another but I've not got any ideas that would keep me interested to see the app through to its conclusion. Â I have written a cool Secure SMS client with custom encryption. You'll need a few years and a super-computer or two to actually crack what's being transmitted. I don't distrubute that through the market though!
