Rainbow-colored Oreo filled with controversy

Despite some calls for a boycott, Kraft Foods may have bitten off just what it meant to chew when it posted a gay-pride-themed picture of an Oreo cookie on Facebook.

The post pictured an Oreo filled with six layers of frosting in the colors of the rainbow flag that symbolizes diversity in the gay community. The picture is headlined "June 25 | Pride," and an accompanying text reads "Proudly support love!"

Basil Maglaris, Kraft's associate director of corporate affairs, said the graphic was in recognition of Pride Month in the United States.

More than 150,000 Facebook users "liked" the post and 22,463 had commented as of Tuesday afternoon. Not all the comments were supportive.

One comment read: "By (sic) Oreo. I'll do my business elsewhere!"

Another said: "No thanks Oreo. We don't want this unhealthy sinful lifestyle flaunted," and a third read: "thought Oreos were a family cookie."

Maglaris said positive comments have "far outnumbered" negative ones.

One read: "Very glad to support a company like Oreo that joins the campaign for civil rights!"

"As a company, Kraft Foods has a proud history of celebrating diversity and inclusiveness. We feel the Oreo ad is a fun reflection of our values," Maglaris said.

The ad was part of Oreo's 100th birthday celebration, he said. The company posts new online content daily.

Don't look for the rainbow cookie in stores. Fine print under the picture reads: "Made with creme colors that do not exist."

They're not making this cookie :(

Some people are still backwards aren't they? They yanks have plenty but you only have to open twitter or facebook to see we have our fair share.

The fact that racism and homophobia are alive and well in 2012 makes me sick. That's real homophobia not the Phil Brown version.

What the fuck is that site? Every comment on that article had misread the story, and thought that Kraft made the list of foods they'd have to boycott, whereas it clearly stated it was someone on Reddit. Bunch of idiots.

Was it Friends that made Kraft sell Oreos in this country? I remember one of the gang eating them and people collectively asking what oreos were. I had them for the first time and was majorly disappointed by them. A fucking chocolate bourbon. That advert they're running just now is utterly dreadful as well. A child acting like Robert De Niro.

That's Glenn Beck's news site - the conservatives here are very scary. What would be considered far right back home is seen as an acceptable form of expression in the US, and it worries the shit out of me. No-one in the political mainstream is conservative enough for these people - I've heard Bachmann, Perry, Palin, and Santorum referred to as "liberals" and "RINOs" [Republican In Name Only]. Meanwhile, there is an underlying Ron Paul love from half of them, and it's not because of the weed pseudo-legalizing. Has the strange effect of making me comfortable with the idea of sniveling little corporate shites like Romney - I'll stick to the establishment, if this is the most viable alternative.

Also, they see George Soros everywhere. It's like a Where's Wally book.

EDIT - Biff, you're right. Black and White oreos are the wank of the world. The other varieties, like mint, or chocolate, are where the money is at.

I think they've been around over here for donkeys years, though limited availability. And they've just gradually caught on much like other American confectionary- Reeses & Hershey's are starting to become more common over here now. They're not bourbons! They have a vanilla centre! They are bloody lovely.

Not sure about how they ended up being brought over here but they were Zack's favourite snack on Saved by the Bell
