The Why Don't You Get a Job Thread

Sounds like it could turn into a bad episode of the Apprentice with people trying to get over, but if that's the sort of thing ahead, then i'd feel reasonably comfortable in that environment.

Really appreciate the advice, thanks mate.

It almost definitely will, just don't get dragged into it. Give them enough rope, and they will hang themselves with it, then you can take control again. Good luck!

I've been at my current job for four days and I'm already looking elsewhere.

Not because of money reasons, but because the hours are shit, and it's the worst run office I've ever been in.

Me too!

They've bumped the hours up at my job since I applied so I'm now working six days a week, with shift patterns and transport links that mean that I'm either up at four to get there for seven in the morning or finishing at eleven at night and getting home at two. I'm fucking exhausted already and there's no way I'm going to last it out.

The girl who signed me off JSA seemed to think I'd have a good case for quitting because they aren't paying me minimum wage but advised me to query it with my agency rep first, in case it was a mistake (it's not). I'm applying to anywhere and everywhere to find something else but I'm seriously considering just jacking it in now and just trying to live off the hardship fund if I do get sanctioned.

I've decided to test the waters for any writing jobs around Manchester and applied for three copywriting things last night. Don't think I'll get any of them as they might be old ads but I was quite encouraged by how much seems to be around.

The difficulty I have is that my field of expertise is in the grot but looking for jobs in that area isn't easy, especially if you are looking with the bigger companies rather than someone who just wants you to write something for their shitty commission grabbing blog. I've never been able to find anywhere where I could see if there are jobs across the decent paying part of the industry.

Yes, but there are ways around it, such as paying commission only.

It's a factory job so they should be paying me minimum wage. Really I should've walked out as soon as they mentioned that it wasn't the job that was advertised. (more hours but much less pay per hour). I figured it was because I'm being paid through an agency but the girl who signed me off said I should still be getting minimum wage.

I'm going to go down to the Job Centre before work and ask their advice. Out of the thousands of people on my shift, I'm the only fucker from my town stupid enough to try and get there through public transport, and that was despite it being heavily promoted at the Job Centre.

I definitely need to get out of there. I had a microwavable curry last night (my day off), struggled to keep it down and then realized that it was the closest thing to a proper meal I've had since Sunday night. I've just been living off of cereal, toast and sandwiches because I just don't have the time to make/eat something big in the mornings or on break and if I eat something big at night I won't get to sleep in time to get up at four. I'm moving to back shift now for the next week so fuck knows how that's going to work.

I'm going to try and at least make it through the weekend since I get overtime on Sunday but I'm almost certain that I'm going to jack it in on Monday and just deal with the consequences.

Sound familar, the long days are absolutely killing me 5.30am to 7pm ish kinda wipes out the day, for not the greatest amount of money. It's basically eat, sleep and work. Yes, it's an easy job, but the travel and the hours are just draining me. Usually feck all food during the day, an evening meal and then bed to get ready for the next day. Ive taken some time off, even though can ill afford it as dont get holiday pay, per se as was coming apart at the seems.

I need to stick it out though as need the cash. If I make it whilst the end of January, immediate money worries will be solved and will be able to carry on from there. I hope. In the interim, it's destroying everything :/

Are you back to full health with your back now Pat?

Well, I'm cleared to work, and drive! Huzzah! I still use that Champion back support, though much less frequently and painkillers for my shoulders as and when. ( Scanning=RSI related, rather than to do with the neck)

I'm asymptomatic with back pain, though you can feel that there is something not right with my lower back and my neck( where it's meant to be bobbles at the base of the spine in a straight line, it's more all over the place!), however because there is no pain associated with either at present the docs and the specialists have discharged me, despite my concerns over finding out what has changed or what has caused it to be like that. I'm treating it as a good thing at the moment, with no pain and taking care not to look after it when at work, or at home.

Just need to sort my stamina out. Was going to go swimming to help with that, but with working hours have no time. Instead, because of the way the bus is, in terms of times and bus stops, I can walk some where in the region of 2-4 miles a day. As it's that or freeze to death ( Minus 8 the other day), standing still getting drenched in the middle of nowhere for anywhere up to an hour or two depending on if the bus wants to be late, or ridiculously late. The standing still really doesn't help my back (can feel it twinge, but no pain, so dont wanna risk it), so, I walk to the next village down or the one after if am up to it. Driving to work, doesnt save as much time as you'd think either and is actually cheaper to catch the bus vs petrol money for the week.

So yeah, all is good on the back score, if I had the job I have but easier to get to and less pounding on the travel, say 7.30-5 rather than 5.30am-7pm, then I suspect that things on that side would be great as well.

Agency or not, you should be on minimum wage. Fuck the Job Centre (if it's like my local branch, their advice will be along the lines of, "Not my problem"), go speak to CAB.

My job centre is okay actually. My mate used to work there so I know some of the advisors socially and the ones I don't have been pretty cool with me. One even added some stuff to my book o' lies when I hadn't filled it in right.

I decided to speak to the agency first but there doesn't seem to be any reps on backshift but one of the boys I work with was insisting that we were getting

Unless you've been amassing a collection of CCJs, then I wouldn't worry too much.

I've finished my first full week at this new job, and I have very mixed feelings. It's shit hours, professionalism in the office is next to non-existant, organisation and training is a joke, and I could quite happily beat with a hammer all but one of the people in my department.

However, I've exceeded my targets threefold (and none of the regular staff have even reached theirs), I'm being looked on as a golden boy and the hilariously unattainable incentive (iPhone 5) will be mine in 2 weeks at this rate.

So, do I stick it out, make money but go insane, or risk fucking it off for somewhere with better hours, a better reputation, but where I don't do as well?

Stick it out whilst looking for somewhere with better hours. Get your iPhone and a steady income; beggars can't be choosers and all that. Besides, plenty of people have undesirable jobs that encompass plenty worse than working in an unprofessional workplace. Get through it and move on when the opportunity arises and you can tell prospective employers that you exceeded your targets every time.
