The Why Don't You Get a Job Thread

Whenever you give an answer, try to be concise without being vague.  Start with "When I was (this position) at (this company)" to clarify when you are talking about.  And don't be afraid in saying when things didn't work out, use it to expand on what you learned from the experience.

I'm leaving this job on Wednesday and I have absolutely zero motivation to do anything or even to turn up and I'm not pushing myself particularly hard the last few days. As such, I've had the old bird who sits behind me (who faces the opposite way to me) very obviously looking over my shoulder at what I'm doing and facing away from her PC and having her conversations looking at the back of my head in what appears to be a passive aggressive statement that there's still work to be done.

Am I alone in my slacking off during the last few days in a job where it doesn't impact my colleagues how much or little I do, or is she being as much of a twat as I imagine?

Nah you're in the right. I spent my last week at the Council printing out A3 posters saying 'It's Poirot Time' and sticking them in various places, in addition to putting paper over all of the bins saying 'BIN BROKEN! DO NOT USE!'

Get the work email and number of someone you don't like and sign them up for dinner at Cote Brasserie every evening.

I think I mentioned last year my friend who's work number I had sent to roughly 150 call back services for insurance, rental cars, timeshares etc. He worked from home so every single one of these calls would flash up as 'Wiltshire Council' on his personal mobile. He eventually gave up and got a new phone number.

When I left a job back in 2006, I had a work mobile. They didn't take the phone off me or cancel the SIM. Me and some mates ran up a bill in the hundreds of pounds calling up sex lines to ask the workers the answers to late night TV quiz shows where you could win money. Good times.

How accurate are those free CV evaluations recruitment agencies offer you? I applied for a job the other day and ticked a box to get mine evaluated, and the response was basically to tell me it's shit and that it could be improved by getting a professional CV writer to have a go at it.

The reason I ask is because I don't really agree with some of the criticisms. For example, she said my CV was visually uneven which simply isn't the case. She also said to include a short personal statement at the top, but I've long been told they are pointless as anything worthwhile will be included within the covering letter for the job in question.

I wouldn't pay to get anybody to rewrite it, and I think it's cheeky as fuck to request money from jobseekers for such a service, but now I'm concerned my CV just isn't up to scratch.

It it's CV Now the service is good. They have decent people and generally solid advice. I work with them at the moment and brought them in to do that very tickbox service you described.

There's a very good CV advice subreddit, alternatively I'm happy to look over yours via PM if you'd like?

Don't bother with the personal statement on your CV, the covering letter will do the job for that, and two sides of A4 is really tight for job experience and qualifications anyway. I've taken to adding a fourth page, mapping my task experience and competencies to each line of the job description, which has worked well.

I've worked in recruitment for 4 years. CV writing isn't rocket science. If anyone wants to DM me or email me, I'm more than happy to take a look and give a few pointers if needed. Bear in mind, I've specialised in sales recruitment but happy to help.

It's CV Now, yeah. They gave me good advice on how to lay out the description of each job in all fairness (although I'm having difficulty figuring out exactly what I would write myself), but I just can't for the life of me figure out what she means by my CV being "visually uneven".

That would be great if you wouldn't mind - I'll PM it when I get home later, thanks very much.
