I just don't see why anyone is surprised that soldiers end up crazy. Human beings are not designed to murder large numbers of other human beings. Given that a large part of military training and practice is about dehumanising the enemy so that killing them means nothing to you, it only surprises me that this kind of thing doesn't happen more often.
