NEWM
Thread idea stolen by Gladders. Â Inspired by a glorious find by Ian of a classic Livewire on Youtube, and the general madness (read: absolutely fucking brilliance) of the neverending NXT, lets talk about WWE when it's nothing like what it should be. Favourite wrestlers, matches and moments that appeared to be allowed to happen while somebody was creating a diversion for Vince. Â One of my favourites has to be Shawn Michaels going spastic the night after Hell in a Cell in an in-ring promo. He's obviously supposed to run the Curtain Call video to piss off Vince, but the megalamaniacal rant he goes on afterwards is something to behold. He cuts Bret's legs off when the Harts do their bit in the promo, and the look of powerless disgust on Bret's face towards the end of it is some of the most intent disdain I've ever seen on a wrestler's face. HBK wasn't half a cunt, but like most things in wrestling, he was the best of his kind at that, too. All this, remember, as the first segment on the Brian Pillman is Dead episode of Raw. Lovely stuff. Â A jaw-dropping display. This link kicks off from the middle of Bret rambling a bit, which is really when it truly kicks off anyway. Bret really stumbles over everything while Shawn just totally plays up to it in the ring, then starts his spectacular rant when Bret fucks off. Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted February 12, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted February 12, 2012 The promo, linked below, is a full on shoot. Michaels is meant to be doing an interview about random shite regarding his injury, but he just stays "bugger this" and starts ranting about stuff Bret Hart said about him in a real life interview. Its amazing, considering how wrestling is, to see someone just speak his mind full on off script. Its Scott Steiner 2000 esque.  The Observer at the time wrote this in its review of the show: Reality break, folks. It goes without saying that in the ring Michaels did a super job in 1996...however, let's not rewrite history to say Shawn's reign was Hogan-like from a business standpoint, because nothing could be further from the truth. TV ratings collapsed in June of 1996 on Shawn's watch, not Bret's, and reached company all time lows for the rest of the year. Not just Monday night ratings due to Nitro -ratings across the board. Syndication died. Shawn's work in the ring can't be denied...but then buy rates fell through his reigns and it was during Shawn's reign, for the first time in a decade that WWF in both PPV and TV ratings fell to No.2 in the US. And when it came to house shows, while WWF had a strong year in 1996, its best months were February and March and who was champion at that point? The summer was good but there was a serious decline in the fall, at which point Vince threw everything he could to get Bret back, including promising him the belt. Let's not forget that there were numerous cases of Michaels' throwing unprofessional hissy fits throughout the title reign in the ring."  Kevin Nash goes spastic at WCW sacking Scott Hall was always a good one. He does one at the begining of this video and one in the ring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mkfk0QePmQI  More from Kevin Nash - "I'm going over because I said so" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05vrgqP2XXs...feature=related  Goldberg 'shoot' promo. NEWM
The Shawn/Bret promos should have been extras in their entirety on the Bret/Shawn DVD. Just week after week of them going out there and blowing off steam about how much they fucking hate each other. Completely riveting stuff.
Paid Members CleetusVanDamme Posted February 12, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted February 12, 2012 Kevin Nash on commentary for a whole episode of Thunder. He'd just had the book taken off him, so was in full shoot mode the whole night. I haven't seen it in ages, but there's some belting lines in there... Â Tenay: "And here comes LA PARKA! Why is La Parka coming out here?" Nash: "Because we got to the booking meeting late today, Tenay, and half the guys didn't show up." Â *After a Meng match* Nash: "They should have known Meng was going to win...nobody loses after having a big video package of them right before the match!" Â I need to watch it all again soon. There's a part where he's talking over a Sid/Goldberg build-up video that's just classic Nash. He even manages to complain about his action figure doing the job in an advert they show. Â Â Â Thunder Is Sexy!
Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted February 12, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted February 12, 2012 My favourite lines were: "That's not Booker T, thats Wesley Snipes ... no that is Booker T." Â On why La Parka turned up: "Lex Luger is horrified of skeletons." Â During a Horace match: "The reason Lex Luger isnt coming down now is because there skeletons on Horace's tights". NEWM
The Goldberg and Nash shoots are utterly horrifying. I enjoy little cheekies on WWE as much as the next guy, but that's usually as far as it gets. Â Stuff like these would have NEVER made it anywhere near a notebook in a creative meeting under Vince, let alone two episodes of Thunder in a row. Fascinating viewing, but absolutely insane, in context. Poor Ritchie will have a stroke if he sees them.

"Don't think Bulldog & Owen are very happy right now" - JR with the understatement of 97! I bet they wanted to beat the living shit out of him. Does Bret mentoin this promo in his book I can't remember.  Big Nash is right though Vince loves all that stuff - playing the boys off against each other.
