WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 22, 2011 Share Posted December 22, 2011 It seems a shame with the likes of Rihanna gyrating in g-strings on prime time television that the art of innuendo seems to be dying out a little. There are loads of things I remember as a kid with sexual/other connotations that in my youth I completely missed. Â The first that springs to mind is 'The Money Shot' by Val Venis, having never heard the term used in its real porn-film-climax context. Â And I used to love the Spice Girls when I was about seven or eight, and lyrics like 'be a little bit wiser baby/put it on put it on/tonight is the night/that two become one' meant absolutely nothing to me. Even more obvious lyrics like 'We got it up and down to it, like the dirty bass in the music/I got my major chords strummin/Took some time and then we're really buzzin/First bite wet my appetite/second helpings always better flew over my head. I also remember getting a Prodigy album after Firestarter went to number one, all these rave drug anthems including 'Smack My Bitch Up' and I took no notice other than of how cool it all sounded. Â By far my favourite Spice Girls track which I still listen to today, and it's only now that I've actually read those lyrics as opposed to listening to them have I finally realised what it was they were singing about. The point was mostly I was sat around as a seven year old listening to explicit clubby rave music with no clue of the drug or rave connotations. The only time I'd heard of ecstasy at that point was when I got upset and angry that the lead singer of East 17 had been sent to jail for possession, and my Grandma sat me down and gave me a stern lecture on how drugs were wrong and that he got the punishment he deserved for breaking the law. Â In kind of the reverse of the thread topic, I got a Rock t-shirt when I was fifteen that had "Layin' the smack down!" on the back. My sister was convinced it was a heroin reference. There were probably around 10+ drug/gun/ho references in every song that I didn't get. Â Thankfully I didn't follow any of these questions up with my mum or anything.
