Things you didn't get as a kid...

It seems a shame with the likes of Rihanna gyrating in g-strings on prime time television that the art of innuendo seems to be dying out a little. There are loads of things I remember as a kid with sexual/other connotations that in my youth I completely missed.

The first that springs to mind is 'The Money Shot' by Val Venis, having never heard the term used in its real porn-film-climax context.

And I used to love the Spice Girls when I was about seven or eight, and lyrics like 'be a little bit wiser baby/put it on put it on/tonight is the night/that two become one' meant absolutely nothing to me. Even more obvious lyrics like 'We got it up and down to it, like the dirty bass in the music/I got my major chords strummin/Took some time and then we're really buzzin/First bite wet my appetite/second helpings always better flew over my head. I also remember getting a Prodigy album after Firestarter went to number one, all these rave drug anthems including 'Smack My Bitch Up' and I took no notice other than of how cool it all sounded.

Anyone got any to share?

Are kids these days so naive and innocent or has the internet age of information made them wise up?

By far my favourite Spice Girls track which I still listen to today, and it's only now that I've actually read those lyrics as opposed to listening to them have I finally realised what it was they were singing about.

What's the hidden meaning behind Smack my Bitch Up?

It's just a borrowed line from an Ultramagnetic MCs track isn't it? The whole album littered with Ultramag references and samples.

Fuck knows. The point was mostly I was sat around as a seven year old listening to explicit clubby rave music with no clue of the drug or rave connotations. The only time I'd heard of ecstasy at that point was when I got upset and angry that the lead singer of East 17 had been sent to jail for possession, and my Grandma sat me down and gave me a stern lecture on how drugs were wrong and that he got the punishment he deserved for breaking the law.

 You can't have paid much attention, then?

I was about thirteen when that Spice Girls song came out, and I recall there being a lot of publicity about it being about safe sex.

In kind of the reverse of the thread topic, I got a Rock t-shirt when I was fifteen that had "Layin' the smack down!" on the back. My sister was convinced it was a heroin reference.

Thanks to my older brother, I was listening to Cypress Hill, NWA and Ices Cube and T at the age of about 10. There were probably around 10+ drug/gun/ho references in every song that I didn't get.

Thankfully I didn't follow any of these questions up with my mum or anything.

"What's a bong?" probably wouldn't have gone down too well.
