Harsh insight into a British Wrestling publication.

Okay, So I was a little unsure if I wanted to post this or not (it being my first post and all) but having read a lot of comments expressing similar feelings to the subject I feel it sort of important to share what I've experienced.

So the back story is Im coming to the end of my degree studying film and television. My dissertation is titled 'A critical analysis of professional wrestling in the mainstream media'. Up to now I've had nothing but amazing help from people within different organisations. Ive interviewed Ex and current WWE, TNA, CHIKARA, ROH, WXW and various other independent talent. Ive also been working very closely with a British fed (both in and out of the ring) to give myself as much scope as i can on the business. Ive also been keeping a blog (all be it not too regularly but i try).

So, in an effort to expand my experience beyond the highly expensive piece of paper I'm going to receive come next may, I have messaged various outlets asking if they had any room for contributions. Totally voluntary, just wanted to show I've done yet more stuff off my own back. Admittedly not many places had anything to offer but were very courteous and encouraging (Dave Langana and IWANTWRESTLING.com went out of their way to send me a genuinely nice message).

In an effort to cover my own arse i shan't name names here. I emailed a very longstanding and well established British based wrestling magazine simply stating;

As well as my academic success I have written articles for independently ran fanzines in both Liverpool and Manchester. However I wish to move my writing from music to wrestling and MMA because I take great pride in my wealth of knowledge and commitment to go above and beyond for the sports (I have traveled all over the counter and abroad to follow both). Though I have strong opinions and will never pull punches, i endeavour to remain subjective with my writing in order to give as honest and as open a view of any given subject.

Please find a copy of my CV attached and I would greatly appreciate any feedback

Kind Regards

Now, I'm grateful for any kind of response really, I'm not under any illusions that these outlets are anything less than inundated and I'm just another student.

however i did receive a response from the magazines chief editor;

See page seven of the latest issue

Literally, that was all that was said in the reply email.

Because I read this magazine (and have done since i was at least 12) I went out and bought my issue to find that indeed page seven answered my question;

We were not looking for any contributors and do not offer work experience

Once again, I understand that these people are probably very busy, but i couldn't help but feel a little disenfranchised by this and not being one to be wronged i felt i needed to air my opinions to the source;

Usually I would be grateful for a response regarding positions within an established magazine such as your own, however I do take great exception to the manor in which this exchanged has been treated by yourself.

I feel your response shows a negativity on your part I have yet to experience within any facet of either the Wrestling Industry or from any other publication.

As apart of my academia, my dissertation entitled 'A Critical Analysis of Professional Wrestling Within the Mainstream Media' required me to independently seek out interviews from people within both said industries. From this I had wonderfully co operative communications from both talent and production staff from WWE, TNA, CHIKARA, ROH, WXW and CZW. I have also been working closely with a British wrestling outfit, both training in and outside of the ring to gain an experience of the industry not seen by even the most committed viewer.

I understand that you may receive a high volume of requests such as my own, but the time it taken you send what sent, it would have been within your ability to simply say 'thanks but we have nothing'.

Instead your response shows a lack of decency that optimises every negative connotation of a wrestling fan. It shows both an arrogance of the subject matter and is a testament to the lack of opportunity for unestablished talent coming out of education only to be denied by a system that refuses to accept progression.

As a reader of your magazine for no less than 12 years this disappoints me greatly and hence forth I will no longer be investing in [sAID MAGAZINE], though judging by your apparent attitude I doubt this will resinate with you.

I know I'm leaving myself a little open for scrutiny putting something like this up on an open forum. But i genuinely feel something like this reflects so badly on wrestling fans like myself and people that use this forum. Its almost insulting that someone of this apparent ignorance is in charge of one of out lead publications.

So there, I've said my piece :)

What could this magazine possibly be without naming names? :confused:

The only way to find out is by looking at page seven of the latest issue of every British-based wrestling magazine on the market! Considering the number of titles available, it could take days to scour through them all.

Edit: It's PowerSlam.

I don't want to come across as dickish here, but as an aspiring journalist myself (games though, not wrestling), one major thing you want to avoid is spelling and grammar mistakes in your writing. Whether it be an application to somewhere or the work itself, it makes you look like a kid just wanting to scribble anything down that you think looks class.

It's not that big of a deal on here of course, as this is just a forum, but if you want to be treat like a professional then act/write like one.

Antagonising people who turn you down because you didn't like their tone won't get you anywhere either. What if one day they're looking for someone? They won't accept the guy who had a pop at them, wrote about them on a forum and sent badly written messages.

I appreciate what your saying, but i think my point is pretty just.

I don't think anyone should just palm off anyone like that regardless of their position.

Again i can't stress enough that I wasn't really expecting anything really, however as stated my response, the time it took to write what was written, a simple 'sorry but thank you' would have been appreciated.

I just don't think people should get away with that kind of behaviour, again it reflects really poorly on us as wrestling fans.

A degree in "Film and Televison". LOL

But anyway I know from experience of applying for do work placements in schools and other institutes related to children. Many people don't want to know even if you want to work for free and these are goverment funded aswell. With something private like a wrestling magazine they would have thought you would have known more about the magazine. Then would have seen there disclaimer aswell.

May I ask, have you had a job before? You seem like you don't handle rejection well.

I must agree with TripleGay here, you've certainly not handled the situation brilliantly. Besides, I'm not too sure if aspiring to write for a wrestling magazine in this day and age is the smartest move ever; even the publication in question has had to cut down on its number of issues per year and I hardly believe that there'd be a great financial benefit writing for PowerSlam and such magazines that cater towards a decreasing audience of what has always been a rather niche target anyway. IMO you'd be better off writing on a subject with more scope for work and just writing a wrestling blog if you enjoy the subject. That's just my view anyway.
