I don't think Kubrick was ever trying to be different just for the sake of it. It's just that he never obsessed himself with a particular genre like 99% of directors have tended to.

 

2001 is incredible to look at, certainly, but I need more than that.

FMJ Im torn on because Ive seen it a zillion times and its neither here nor there now that the Pyle thing is no longer shocking. Never keen on Clockwork Orange either tbh

Clockwork Orange my favourite, followed by The Shining. Also really enjoyed Full Metal Jacket- especially the first half.

 

Was really disappointed with 2001. Watched it for the first time last year and was expecting a bit of an epic, didn't think it was that good. Probably didn't help that I kept 'Whoooo'-ing like a gommo during the orchestral score.
