Mr.Showtime
I'm with DEF in this one, 2001 I can watch over and over again and just be mesmerised by it. I must say I don't think I've seen Strangelove though.
Moderators PowerButchi Posted September 21, 2011 Moderators Share Posted September 21, 2011 The correct answer is Spartacus. Â I fucking hate 2001 though. And Eyes Wide Shut. When Kubrick is good, he's very good. When Kubrick is bad, it defies belief.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted September 21, 2011 Author Paid Members Share Posted September 21, 2011 Spartacus is sensational. I refuse to believe he directed 2001, though. I have no evidence to back this up, but it helps me.
Paid Members Halitosis Romantic Posted September 21, 2011 Paid Members Share Posted September 21, 2011 Yeah, me too - I tend to assume that one of them monkeys directed it instead. It's like he was always trying to be different, and once or twice different translated into shite.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted September 21, 2011 Author Paid Members Share Posted September 21, 2011 I don't think Kubrick was ever trying to be different just for the sake of it. It's just that he never obsessed himself with a particular genre like 99% of directors have tended to. Â 2001 is incredible to look at, certainly, but I need more than that. patiirc
Spartacus here  Closely followed by  Dr Strangelove Paths of Glory ( Only saw this quite recently and was suitably blown away by its awesomeness)  FMJ Im torn on because Ive seen it a zillion times and its neither here nor there now that the Pyle thing is no longer shocking. Never keen on Clockwork Orange either tbh
Paid Members bAzTNM#1 Posted September 21, 2011 Paid Members Share Posted September 21, 2011 2001 for me. Absolutely hated it first time I watched it. A rewatch a few years later changed that view. "The Shining" a very close second.
Tommy Atkins
His Lolita is crap, it's a comedy vehicle for Peter Sellers. Â I would go for Full Metal Jacket. I think the second half is much better than some people do. Â I haven't seen some of his films though. Â Is Barry Lyndon any good?

benbobjr
Like many other people The Shinning is my favourite by him. Although I seem to be one of the few who actually enjoyed Eyes Wide Shut.

Paid Members PunkStep Posted September 21, 2011 Paid Members Share Posted September 21, 2011 Clockwork Orange my favourite, followed by The Shining. Also really enjoyed Full Metal Jacket- especially the first half. Â Was really disappointed with 2001. Watched it for the first time last year and was expecting a bit of an epic, didn't think it was that good. Probably didn't help that I kept 'Whoooo'-ing like a gommo during the orchestral score. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted September 21, 2011 Author Paid Members Share Posted September 21, 2011 Has anyone else seen The Killing and Killer's Kiss? His earlier stuff is well worth seeking out but generally gets overlooked.
