Paid Members WWFChilli Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Posted August 14, 2011 Isn't the creator of the show a massive arsehole (and I don't mean in a doble-entendre way) when it comes to bands saying they don't want there stuff on the show?
Paid Members Surf Digby Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Posted August 14, 2011 Because it was a fucking abomination. The whole concept - either in reality or within the fictional world of the show - that they should be giving it a fresh new sound is as arrogant as it is bewildering, when their fresh new sound is to make it sound generic and shit. They're fucking schoolkids who specialise in karaoke. Â Also, a woman who dresses as a woman is not a transvestite. It's a woman.

Yes, usually accusing them of being homophobic or similar, as he isn't willing to accept that some bands just thing the program is shit and don't want to be a part of it.

Apparently so. I remember Dave Grohl ripping into the guy a while back because he wanted to use Foo Fighters songs. Slash and Kings Of Leon have both refused too. Â Edit - Found this quote from Ryan Murphy... Â "F--- you, Kings of Leon," Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter in January. "They're self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It's like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music." Â Not wanting your song covered by Glee = Hating on arts education!
Paid Members Surf Digby Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Posted August 14, 2011 After Slash turned him down, didn't he say something like "he's a has-been that nobody would want to listen to anyway"? Â Which is why - of course - he was approached in the first place.

He'll have been desperate to get the ok to cover Sweet Child O' Mine.
Richie Freebird Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Steve Wright is a cunt. Â Amen to that brother. I had to endure a particulalry painfull episode of his "Sunday love songs" show this morning at work. I nearly whiteyed like.
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Posted August 14, 2011 I did enjoy Charlie Brooker ripping into it during an episode of Screenwipe. That's been the only joy Glee has ever given me. Â Brooker summed it up nicely by saying it's a bunch of pretty show offs pretending to be 'outcasts'. With shit covers of some decent songs. Â I do chuckle when bands tell Glee to go away when Glee wants to use their songs. If only for the creator/writer/producer to go off on some mental rant, usually about Glee being some high brow artistic endeavour and anybody who sees otherwise is homophobic. What a cunt.
Paid Members Halitosis Romantic Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Posted August 14, 2011 Really enjoyed season one, they seemed to have a nice balance of music and melodrama - however, I think that's because the success came as a bit of a shock. Now, most of the storylines and numbers are a gimmick, and too many celeb guests.
textonly Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Yeah, I'm actually quite a big fan of Glee. Â I'm not going to say it's a brilliant show, because it's not. Sometimes the writing is pretty weak and there has certainly been a fair few dud episodes. But on the whole I think it's funny, charming and delightfully positive. I mean, how much people who hate Glee enjoy musicals generally, I wonder? Personally I enjoy the genre, but a lot of the pitfalls of Glee are shared by many of the revered old musicals (watch Rocky Horror and tell me it's a tightly written masterpiece, I dare you). As a genre it doesn't always place its primary emphasis on sharp writing and seriousness. It's about effervescence and emotion, I think, and Glee does that really well. Remembering that its TV peers are actually the likes of Gossip Girl and 90210 - not Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire - I think Glee is light years ahead of its competition. It's doing something different, it's fun and I look forward to its return. Â Also, I did go see Glee Live!. I got a free ticket from Sky Rewards and it was... awesome.
Paid Members Surf Digby Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Posted August 14, 2011 (watch Rocky Horror and tell me it's a tightly written masterpiece, I dare you). It's not, but it's also not as pretentious as Glee. Rocky Horror was largely parody/pastiche to begin with.

Musicals are awesome, Glee is not. High School Musical is far superior.  And the creator is reason enough to hate the show.
Paid Members GlennCullen Posted August 14, 2011 Paid Members Posted August 14, 2011 Gleek is a shit term.
Jambo Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Ohhh, look at Surf hating on Glee for no reason. Â I'm a fucking Gleek and proud. The music is quality, the storytelling that hits things that matter (like supporting the LGBT community, bullying and teenage pregnancy) is positive and Dianna Agron will one day be mine, even if I have to lock her up in a basement. Â Ryan Murphy is fucking spot on IMO re musicians. If a band can't accept that Glee covering their song inspires people to learn to play / sing and that it'll make the band money on top of it, then they're selfish cunts indeed. Glee reaches a completely different demographic from the generic KOL demo, and they overlooked the positives. Â With all this said, Ryan Murphy as a person is a cunt who plays the homophobic card at any opportunity and they focused on the gay relationship waaaaaay too much for my liking in S2.
