FutureShock 50! - Stockport Guildhall Sunday 10th April

Recommended Posts

An interesting night of wrestling with some very solid bits of wrestling especially in the Gallagher/Singh match. Shaun Daniels may have become a huge fan favorite with the simple use of a carrot cake. Overall not as flashy as GPW the night before (though I'm probably jaded) but the matches were of the same high quality that the North West is pumping out at present.

A report on the action from ringside:

The show once again opened with Dangerous Damon Leigh, but this match could not have been more different to his previous opener at FutureShock 49, this time up against one half of up and coming tag team Blond Jovi, The Hair Apparent, JD Sassoon. The match showcased much of Damon's technical skill as well as some of his harder hitting offense while JD, attempting to follow the terrible advice of his partner, Axl Rage, struggled to keep up. That is, until he hit a massive codebreaker that looked like it could've knocked DDL out. It takes more than that to keep the GPW champ down, however, and he soon after gained hit the Risk Factor, leaving him victorious yet again.

This was followed by the announcement of a brand new Women's Championship belt in FutureShock, the holder of which will be decided in a gauntlet match on June 5th, at FutureShock 51. Upon hearing this, It Girl Melanie Price & The Artiste Formerly Known As Rebecca James made their entrance, with Mel demanding that the title be given to her immediately, even going so far as having a tug of war with the ring announcer over ownership of the belt. Luckily Swedish Tigress and Charlotte Quinn took this moment to intervene and get a tag match underway.

The two teams went back and forth, it soon becoming apparent that Tigress' skill and Quinn's hard strikes were more than a match for the BFFs Mel Price and Becky James. The match quickly turned into an all out war with all four women in the ring at the same time, only ending when Mel went to use her loaded purse, being stopped by the referee, but as his back was turned removing the purse from the ring Charlie lifted Mel into the air only to have her injured knee smashed by Becky James' knuckle duster purse! She collapsed to the floor, with Mel gaining the pin. Mel went on to steal the Women's Championship belt upon leaving the ring.

Up next was the monster Nordic Warrior against the pluckier, black belted Sparx. This match was classic speed vs size, with Sparx ducking and diving, throwing kicks and strikes to wear the bigger man down, yet for every few attacks he hit, Nordic would come back with a devastating move. It was a few minutes before we really started to see the effects of Sparx's constant barrage of offense, finally knocking the big man off his feet with a thunderous enziguri! It was at this moment that Michael Lovejoy Fitzgerald made his way into the building, this time loudly complaining that he couldn't find the Nordic Warrior's work visa, and demanding that the match be stopped, taking Sparx's attention away from the task at hand. Just as it seemed that Sparx was going to hit Lovejoy, the visa was 'discovered' on his clipboard, coincidentally just as the Nordic Warrior had reached his feet, meaning Sparx turned around straight into a devastating big boot to the face, followed shortly by the Crash Landing, putting him down for the three count.

Before the next match could begin, newly crowned champion Dave Rayne came to the ring, accompanied by Rebecca James, to talk about his actions on the previous show. He spoke about how for seven years he believed there was a right way to do things, that it was about hard work and trust, but last month he realised that all he had to do was reach out and take what was his. At this point he invited Raynaldo's sister, Rosa, into the ring, claiming that she'd been dreaming about the Champ, and offering his lips to her to do exactly what she'd been dreaming about, and did she ever! Hauling back she slapped Rayne across the face as hard as she could to huge applause from the crowd. Shocked, Rayne reacted violently, grabbing a handful of Rosa's hair, but before he could go through with his threats, Raynaldo came storming to the ring to save his sister and gain some measure of revenge. This turned out to be a trap, however, with The Models running out to gang up on Ray, shortly followed by Vitamin C. A huge brawl ensued, ending when Raynaldo suicide plancha'd over the top rope to the outside, but landed heavily, injuring himself in the process. Unfortunately, this allowed The Models to isolate Carl Clinch, hanging him upside down in the corner and brutally attacking his exposed knee with a hammer, leaving him unable to walk, having to be acrried away from the ring by referee Lance Lenahan and turning the main event into a three on four.

When the ring was finally cleared of wrestlers, RJ Singh vs Jack Gallagher could begin. Since winning the FutureShock Trophy Tournament last year, Jack had asked for opponents to be brought in from other promotions to test him and get him ready for his eventual title shot. Management happily complied, bringing in the Bollywood Dream, RJ Singh who immediately went to work on the Grappler in what quickly became a fast paced technical bout, really showcasing the abilities of both men in what will surely go down as yet another Gallagher classic. From the start Jack's tactics were clear, at every opportunity attempting to secure an Ankle Lock on RJ who fought to the ropes time and time again. It's a testament to Singh that he managed to make the match so competitive, coming within a hair's breadth of scoring the pinfall on a few occasions, but in the end Jack managed to grapevine the leg and Singh tapped to the Ankle Lock continuing Jack's latest run of victories.

After the interval we were joined by former FutureShock mainstay Chris Egan came down to the ring, to gve us a speech, reminding us of his stature as a wrestler and also to inform us that he would no longer be known as the Five O'Clock Shocker, but as the Manager of Champions. Should Sean Daniels win his match against Baron Bohka, then Chris Egan would put pen to paper and take Daniels to the top of FutureShock. The match then began with Daniels doing his best to fight the seemingly supernatural strength of the Baron, but no matter what he threw, Bohka refused to stay down. Despite showing a lot of fire, Sean Daniels was eventually put down by an Old School Blockbuster.

Up next we had the other half of tag-team Blond Jovi, Axl Rage, up against one half of popular boozy lads 101% Proof in Dannyboy Evans. This was a real back and forth match, with Axl gaining the early advantage. He was unable to capitalise on this, constantly ignoring the good advice from his partner on the outside, JD Sassoon, allowing Dan to get back in the match and eventually get a pin.

Finally, it was time for the main event, the Shockwave Gauntlet which had become a four on three match after Clinch's injury earlier in the night. The match began with Team Rayne's Noam Dar up against Raynaldo's Zack 'Diamond' Gibson. The two were well suited, both with a mix of old school technical offense thrown out at a blistering pace. Noam quickly attacked the leg of Gibson, trying to counteract much of Gibson's agility with a solid leg lock, but time and time again Zack managed to escape the hold and fire back with more of his trademark strikes. Noam was the first to be eliminated after Zack caught him up in a roll-through bridging pin and held him down for the three. Despite being eliminated Noam refused to leave the ring, instead hooking Zack into that leg lock again until the referee managed to drag him off and remove him.

At this point Danny Hope made his entrance for Team Rayne, trying to take advantage of Zack's now injured knee, but was quickly caught up in the same roll-through pin that eliminated Noam! Unfortunately, as he floated over into the bridge, Diamond's knee gave up, allowing Danny to escape and go on to eliminate Zack, evening up the score.

Out next was Xander Cooper, looking for revenge after the hideous injury his partner had received at the hands of Danny earlier in the night. Firing quickly through his opponent and catching him with an impressive lucha-esque second rope crossbody that garnered a close two-count. Danny did his best to recover, but it wasn't long before Xander managed to hit his backcracker-style finisher known as the MXC-3 and eliminate him from the gauntlet.

He didn't have much time to recuperate as Hot Stuff Joseph Hayes made his entrance. Despite a valiant effort by the Ayatollah of Orange Soda, the previous exertion had taken its toll and the Teenage Kicks to the temple was enough to put the former tag champ down.

Due to Carl Clinch's injury, this now left Raynaldo as the final member of his team to enter enter, giving Team Rayne a two to one advantage. To Raynaldo's credit, he dominated Joey, knocking him from pillar to post and showing the same kind of drive and determination that had captured him the FutureShock Championship before losing it to Rayne at the 49th show. Speak of the devil, current champion Dave Rayne made his way out during the bout, first distracting Raynaldo, allowing Joey to get back on firm footing in the match, and then viciously striking Raynaldo in the head with the FutureShock Championship belt! The referee, seeing all this, instantly disqualified Joey Hayes, leaving Team Rayne with only one member left in the gauntlet match.

Unfortunately for Raynaldo, this was the man already in the ring, Dave Rayne and Raynaldo had yet to move after being struck with the title. A smug grin smeared across his face, the current champion lay across the former; Raynaldo's shoulders unmoving as the referee counted to three. Dave Rayne had yet another victory over Raynaldo, and had attained victory in this match, unless there was someone left to take Carl Clinch's vacant place in the match.

All of a sudden music blared from the speakers and it was on like Donkey Kong as Superstylin' Sam Bailey raced through the curtian and to the ring, immediately taking the fight to Dave Rayne! A fired up Bailey is considered a formidable force by many in the locker room and Rayne is no exception , initially struggling to keep himself in the match as the action spilled to the outside , the pair slamming each other into walls, tables and the hard, wood floor. Back in the ring, momentum seesawed back and forth, with Dave even going so far as to kick out after taking the Bail Out. The momentum then appeared to be continuing to go Bailey's way when, seemingly out of frustration, Dave Rayne punched the referee square in the jaw, knocking him clean out! Shortly after Bailey would go on to lock Dave in an as yet unnamed devastating submission move, making the champion tap out. At this point the referee had regained consciousness and had regained his feet, calling for the bell. As Bailey and the crowd celebrated, it was announced that Dave Rayne had lost by a disqualification for attacking the ref, rather than by submission to Bailey, meaning that 'officially', Dave Rayne did not tap out, but still leaving Sam Bailey and the rest of Team Raynaldo as the winners of the Shockwave Gauntlet.

Sam Bailey went on to grab hold of a microphone and point out that he never actually received his rematch after losing the FutureShock Championship to 'The Ascension' Alex Shane, and so he'd be glad to take his rematch against the next best thing, Alex's new lackey, Dave Rayne himself. The show then closed with all four members of Team Raynaldo posing in the ring and being applauded by the crowd.

I can now confirm that on June 5th, alongside a gauntlet match for the newly minted FutureShock Women's Title belt; Superstylin' Sam Bailey will go one on one with Dave Rayne in a match for the FutureShock Championship! That's June 5th, at the Stockport Masonic Guildhall, FutureShock 51!
