Telephone Scams

We have been in our Flat now for about nine months, first time I have had one of these.

I was sat reading just now and had a phonecall from an Indian Lady. She greeted me with my correct Surname and went on to explain that I was owed money from Bank charged or such like (to be honest the speed of which she was speaking, and her thick accent made it difficult for me to understand her). She asked for my date of brith, but I questioned her. I asked her to explain who she worked for and asked which Bank acount of mine she was speaking about. She then asked me to give her the name of my bank. At this point I was getting more than a little annoyed so I asked her to tell me which bank I belonged to. She hung up.

So am I right in thinking she was getting me to answer questions to I would eventually hive her my Bank Account information? Sorry if this is a thick kinda thread but thought it would be an interesting subject, as I am sure I am not the only one here top recieve such a call.

Not a thick thread at all mate. A good con artist will have conned some of the best. The bank will never disclose the nature of the call untill the customer has been correctly identified due to DPA. HSBC on an outbound call will confirm the first part of your date of birth and ask you to confirm the last parts, then confirm the first part of your postcode then ask you to confirm the last part. If at any point you are unsure or unhappy with the way the call is going, ask for a note to be placed on your account for the reason for the call and then ring back a number you know to be genuine, e.g. on the back of your debit card. Never ask the caller for a number to ring back on, as you don't know who you will be ringing. Hope this helps.

I've had this same scam call a couple of years ago. My new tactic when some call centre div phones is to say "yeah, just wait a moment" and then leave the phone next to a speaker and play porn and 80s ballads. But at the time of that bank charges call, I just started imitating the bloke's accent.

Does anybody else get those people claiming to work for Microsoft saying that they have found a virus on your computer and need your computer password quick-smart. This was also an Indian lady. Getting bombarded with them at the moment. All of these type of phone calls seem to be coming from the same woman as well.

Yes, Random Woman, I'll give you my passwords. Here, have my pin number too.
