Poopants the Scrunge Posted August 29, 2008 Share Posted August 29, 2008 I just got Marvel Knights - Spiderman, which seems pretty damn good so farAlso , if anyone has not read it, read Ministry of Space by Warren Ellis.There is also another of Ellis' comics about a Space Shuttle that comes back through a Black Hole..cannot recall the name, but that is also awesome. Just for pure story telling genius, its not got the Ellis 'voice' like Transmet has, its just a short standalone story that is sublime.I'll check for Doktor Sleepless now.Finally....BARRY ALLEN IS DEAD?????!?!?!?! Come on, man, let us know!I don't know which ones he recommends, but I recommend:Watchmen (obviously)Swamp Thing - Moore's entire run of 1 to 6; watch this man re-invent visceral horror.DC Universe: The Collected Works Of Alan Moore - some really good shorts in here; "For The Man Who Has Everything" is particularly good, as is "Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?" Additionally, "Footsteps", a Phantom Stranger piece, is a beautifully esoteric take on the Fall from Grace, and the nature of those who refuse to take sides. "Mogo Doesn't Socialise" is a niftily funny yarn. But the crowning glory of this particular collection is Moore's famous Batman piece, "The Killing Joke" - I don't think they really get much better than that. A Falsh museum put a statue with his real name on the plaque which made Wally West come out as the new Flash. And Hal Jordan (original Green Latern) is also dead. He died in a 'Scott Summer/Apocalyse' kind of death. He merged with a sun killer to save earth.Why is it DC only kill characters that are good? DC ruined a perfectly good storyline just to appease a bunch of twatty fanboys who can't accept change. And, technically speaking, Hal wasn't the original, that was Alan Scott.Hal was great for his time, but he was really stale when DC got round to killing him off and replacing him with the miles better Kyle Rayner. Although, I must admit, having read a number of recommendations, particularly the "Mosaic" arc, I think it's a shame they didn't give John Stewart the main role. "We were budgeting and everything and it was getting really close to going," Johnson told The Continuum. "But the new head of HBO felt it was just too dark and too violent and too controversial. Which, of course, is kind of the point! "It was a very faithful adaptation of the first few books, nearly word for word. They offered me the chance to redevelop it but I refused. I've learned my lesson on that front and I won't do it again. So I'm afraid it's dead at HBO. "I've heard someone is in the process of getting the rights to turn it into a feature film. I hope that happens. But I hope it happens as a series of movies as one movie couldn't do it justice. I really love that story and I dedicated a lot of my time to honor Garth's work. I used to be a huge fan but drifted in and out of it for the last 4-5 years.I really found myself enjoying some of the newer stuff. From "New X-Men" onwards. Can anyone recommend me any TBPs of the recent stuff as I think I'm getting eyestrain from looking at my computer for half the night! Joss Whedon on X-Men was decent if you can survive the usual Whedon writing ticks, same with Ellis' current run. Apart from that, good X-Men comics since it all went to shit in the 90s are pretty hard to find. alexander Posted September 3, 2008 Share Posted September 3, 2008 Claremont "New Team" X-Men is the classic stuff. That, the original Lee/Kirby and Morrison's run are the only things I'd call vital. You can grab the Claremont stuff in those awesome Marvel Essentials paperbacks.Morty, that was "Final Night", a crossover event that ran in 1996. The plot revolved around a creature called a Sun Eater...Um, eating the sun. The series itself revolved around Earth's heroes getting together to try and drive the thing off, and later revitalise the sun, and the tie ins were about how each hero was spending what dould have been the Earth's last days. It wasn't very good, really, despite the slightly interesting premise, but did lead to some pretty significant things. Hal Jordan, as Parallax, eventually sacrifices his life to kill the Sun Eater and undo the damage it caused, setting him up to eventually become the Spectre. Ghost Rider and Daredevil were hardly spectacular, and if Preacher is going to make it to the screen, it needs a fucking genius mind behind it to give it the full treatment it deserves. As a new channel head maybe he doesn't want to cause too much fuss in his new job.And there is a pretty big difference between Omar and O'Starr's behavior. Especially when Steve Dillon moves onto art after Dangerous Habits.If you like the Green Arrow, then the best run on the character ever is definately Mike Grell's. Longbow Hunters is the only collected edition, I think, but it's all worth reading.Found it a bit too mean-spirited, actually - I'd go as far as to say that there's NEVER been a good run on Green Arrow, he's much better as a counterpoint to other heroes in a team book.Warren Ellis is a weird one to me - can be great (Transmet is very good, and powers has it's place), but when he's 'reimagining' Marvel Characters (granted, I've only read Nextwave and New Universal), he is butt... B-U-T-T. After I read New Universal I mentioned it to a Marvel freelancer I know, and he apologised. .Y'know what I like? I like The Goon.
