I dunno. He had one of the best trainers in the business and a fair amount of time and matches to try and improve. He was good at other things (powerlifting, martial arts etc), but just didn't take to wrestling / pretend fighting for whatever reason. Like many things in life, it comes naturally to some people whilst others really struggle to get the hang of it.

I think it is safe to say that his heart was not into pro-wrestling. This sentence from the Wrestling Observer report supports that this is the case: "those in Calgary don't have kind words for his willingness to learn". Willingness to learn is the key to improve.

That said, if I had watched that Arn Anderson vs Tom Magee match on TV in the late-1980s, I would have enjoyed it more than some of the other matches that were on WWF's weekly shows back then.

The Observer report from the week of the match:

Tom Magee was green, but no wonder why Vince McMahon thought he had found his next Hulk Hogan. He had a fantastic body (6'4", 265 lbs ripped), strength (powerlifter, world' strongest man competitor) and was an excellent gymnast. It is true that he never improved, but how much wrestling did he really do? On Cagematch, 120 matches are listed over a long period (1985-1990), and it seems like he had long breaks from wrestling over those years. As I have heard mostly negative things about his wrestling, I have always been surprised by how well he actually does those things he actually can do. Arn Anderson carried him to a decent looking match, and by the looks of the clips that WWE posted, Ted DiBiase too. There is nothing wrong about being carried. It is actually the experienced wrestlers' job to see and understand how they can make the most of a match with a "green" opponent. Had the WWE had their developmental territories or the WWE Performance at the time, the story of Tom Magee could have been different if he really wanted it.

However, reading the Wrestling Observer report above, we learn more about the person Tom Magee:

    Quote

... those in Calgary don't have kind words for his willingness to learn and was considered an ego case.

So at the end of the day, Tom Magee is most likely the reason why Tom Magee never made it to the top.

  3. Good wrestlers surely wouldn't be performing in such a shite ring? It looks about 8x8 feet.

I thought Nathan Cruz was pretty good too, shame he's attached to this nonsense of a report.

No, good wrestlers wouldn't generally be performing in such a ring, as they'd have grown beyond that. But, they could. Most of the guys in the top 50 could put on an entertaining match in that ring.

I am sure they could put on something entertaining in that ring but not necessarily a wrestling match. Rope running looks stupid, mat wrestling would be pointless as the ropes can be reached from everywhere and there is no room for highflying. This ring could possibly be used for a stand up brawl, but preferably it should be put away or thrown away. Whatever the case, this "wrestling ring" looks stupid, cheap, embarassing and unprofessional.

  4. Is Scott Future the backyarder that someone was referring to earlier on?

He is not a backyarder. Ironically, he was pushed as a superstar by WrestleXpress, a promotion that booked the Coventry Skydome for a supershow five years ago. What happened to WrestleXpress? That's a long story someone could write a book about:-)
  5. I don't know if i should respond - and on any other forum i wouldnt, but since i'm a regular geek on here, it'd take too much effort not too  .I was the one who sent out the email, and it was designed to bring together all the people it was sent out too on this new project. Ta-daaa. That's actually it. It's a shame that somebody has decided they can't keep private business dealings as such, but there's actually nothing in the email that fans cannot know about; it would just've been good to get promoters to firm 100% to the idea first. As an FYI: A WMC in Stainforth (the place mentioned) was chosen because it has excellent transport links, is a lovely venue, lovely people, is cost wise, but most importantly is TWENTY YARDS away from where our local promoter and a-star man, lives (or works, i forget).I guess it'd be wrong for me to post here the email i sent to Steven, explaining what a good opportunity this is for him to get in at grass roots U23 british wrestling. I rallied off a quick list of guys he could put in on-show or pre-show qualifiers, such as Jack Storm, Spud, Dave Moralez, Jay Phoenix and many more. In-fact, i thought we had made headway in this, as i'd recieved some emails back from promoters comitting 100% to it, we'd looked into belt manufacture, and we even agreed to move from Stainforth into another area of further distance away, in order to get Steven and 1PW involved in this project - for the main aim, and greater good, of exposure to the belt. But yeah, that kinda takes the shine off of the big announcement if and when it comes ;).

So who is the mystery user then Dan? Who sold you out? Who stabbed you in the back? You know what you have to do, dont you........12460.jpg^^Its a real pillow! I want one.
Now that it is out in the open, Daniel Edler has quite a few options. If he knows who sold him out, he can either make a fool of the guy in this forum or let the other promoters know. If the guy is a promoter, it will not be a good thing for him that other promotions know that he can't keep inside information for himself. He can also discuss the matter directly to the person "who sold out".As for presenting conspiracy theories, iamyourtruth has already proved that he is way off.
  6. Iamyourtruth should be banned for putting a private e-mail on a public forum.

Why? It's his email, he can do what he wants with it.
Ok  So if your boss sends you a confidential e-mail about new developments in the company, you can do whatever you want with it because it is your e-mail? Cool for you. I think my boss would have fired me if I put in on a forum. So if your girlfriend sends you a sexy photo on e-mail, you can put it on the web because you can do whatever you want with it? Cool for you. I think my girlfriend would have left me if I posted it on a forum.
  7. Iamyourtruth should be banned for putting a private e-mail on a public forum. That's as bad or even worse than putting someone's private phone number on a forum, especially when it is information that is not to be public yet.Your conspiracy theory is just out of this world in terms of stupidity. There could be a number of reasons why that area is chosen, not to kill 1PW. How can you kill an "American" wrestling company that has just a small flavour of British wrestling by putting on an entirely different product, i.e. British wrestling? The best reason for choosing that area would be that some of the promotions are based not so far away from the area and it has proved to be a good area for getting large crowds. Is 1PW running on the opposite side of the street on the same day at the same time? Guess not..... That's how promotions competed against each other in the old days: Joint Promotions vs Brian Dixon. Is 1PW a threat to these promotions? I hardly think so. 1PW have US indy shows in the UK. Promotions like WAW draw local people to their shows, SWA is based in Scotland and so on.

  8. COLSTON HALL = 18TH DECEMBER 2003-----------------------------------------------1. Skull Murphy beat The Canadian Sinner with the Gator GripMurphy actually looked one mean bastard- his offense looked pretty damn effective for what it was, and Sinner oversold each one like crazy to the point where the crowd started popping for lariats. Yes, clotheslines. Satan might need that snowplough after all. A rather good squash for Murphy was just what the doctor ordered, as he hadn't been in Bristol for many months and needed to look like an asskicker. Which he did. B2. Marty Jones and Sensational Spiderman beat Julio Torres and New York StreetfighterThis was the ANTITHESIS of All Star's model: a very poor match with a great buildup with a lengthy warmup promo (what the fuck? somebody actually been READING our rants?) that got the crowd pouring "Gay Heat" on Julio and Streetfighter throughout. Me & Moj didn't recognise Spiderman but had an inkling that it was 5-Star Flash (the same man who earlier in this thread claimed we knew jack shi oh well, it's not as if we have a grudge against criticism). The match was just one sloppy schmoz that fell apart frequently (it took THREE attempts through the match to do a double-team spot), and some typical face-heel-team spots were played with the ROLES REVERSED= the *Faces* were using foul tags, and the heels did the dosey-do counter in the aformentioned spot that took 3 takes. The finish was nothing spectacular- a Rocket Launcher- but that was really the best thing from a techy point. But the fans liked it. CAfterwards, Marty cut an honest, heartfelt promo about the Colston run coming to an end, and also his career (?) to which he got a proper standing ovation. THIS IS THE FAREWELL PETE COLLINS SHOULD HAVE HAD LAST MONTH. Ahh feck it.3. 5-Star Flash beat Mikey Wiplash with a surprise rollupStarted out with some neat matwork and an AWESOME comic spot where Belton (5-star) gets himself tied up and rolls around like a loon, begs for Mikey to help him out, and instantly flips him over to an armlock. Fantastic. The air of civility ended with a less-than-subtle kick in the nuts from 5-Star, which kicked the bout up a gear. Back and forth action with Mikey getting most of the offense and Belton gets the fluke win. Verrrrrrrrrrrry neat. A-**INTERVAL**4. Frankie Sloane beat Phil Powers and Young Adonis when he rolled up PowersIf there would ever be a perfect wrestler for All-Star, he would have Phil's personality, Frankie's offense and Adonis' selling. Great wrestling with Adonis taking a hell of a beating (and flipping himself arse-over-tit most of the time) for the early part, and Frankie looking like his mentor Robbie Brookside, but attacking far better. Phil was a mean bastard who would let Frankie break the ice and wade in when it suited him. The odd two-wrestling-one-on-apron approach seemed to work well, which allowed each wrestler to take a semi-breather and observe where he could get his next shot in. The Phil/Frankie bits weren't too shabby either. The end came with Adonis all-but-beaten, tagging out to Frankie, who promptly rolled him up for the win. A5. Jonny Storm beat Doug Williams to become the new People's Champion with a rollup.NOW I'm going to get some stick from certain Anti-Pro-FWA-Bias people, but I'd just like to say that this was a fantastic match. Doug came without his belt, and then cut a promo saying that "he knew he'd win so he didn't need to take it with him." Famous. Last. Words. Doug and Jonny got on like a house of fire and wrestled a terrific, pacey encounter. Doug looked a little less refined than usual, but considering his schedule he could be forgiven for looking a little rough now and then. But did he look rough? HELL NO! And neither did Jonny for that matter. These two pulled out all the stops- hit almost every finisher they had (Mexican Spinning DDT! Rewind Rana! Chaos Theory reversed into a DDT! A top-rope moonsault caught into a top-rope German! ye had to see it to be sure, arrrr!) and never gave up or looked frustrated when failing to end the match. In the end it all came down to complex manoeuvering of the body, which Jonny won out for the title. A booming streamer gun resounded amongst the cheers of the fans as Jonny - no belt but all the glory - was proclaimed the new People's Champion. Pretty much the whole arena gave a standing ovation when they shook hands and hugged in the middle of the ring. A*NOTESA bunch of jackasses who couldn't give two flying fucks about pro-wrestling sat behind me nearly ruined things, but not quite. Very good wrestling throughout the night (Well, except the first 2 matches), some effectively inciteful (but not *really* distasteful) promos and intelligent booking. Oooh, I think I'd better send that snowplough to Hades by Special Delivery to be on the safe side.Any sarcasm meant in the above writeup is purely coincidental. It's a damn shame that Bristol City Council has its head up its ass and no longer wants wrestling at the Hall, because it has its moments. And tonight was one very big moment, which I understand will be on the local news tomorrow. If I see it I'll tape it. And for those who were wondering, Dixon DID give directions to the Whitchurch Sports Hall. And he also gave the wrong buses to get. At least that's a step in the right direction.

That's an excellent review, sephjnr  I am tired of reading NewportMoj's posts about All-Star Promotions but I guess he had been able to see a lot of negatives in this show as well :bored: I don't need to read NewportMoj's posts any more as I am able to figure out what his thoughts about this show would be. He repeats everything he writes every time there is an All-Star topic on this forum, i.e. the crowd was dead throughout the show except for the main event, the crowd was made up by retarded people and a child molester, and the total crowd was no more than 100, and the most positive thing for NewportMoj would probably be that Relic (his name for Robbie Brookside) was not there
  9. Poor worker or not. Let's put REGAL and ANY WWE worker in the ring without pre-scripting a match and you will find out who is able to WORK a match. The word WORK in this case means WORK a match and not choreograph 3 minutes of rope running with added crash bangs......

    Tou fuckin' che
Many of the matches widely regarded as the greatest ever were 'choreographed' ahead of time. Just because they weren't spontaneous, does that mean those matches shouldn't be regarded as truly great. Why would you care, as a fan, whether a match is laid out beforehand, or not? As long as the match is good, it shouldn't matter how it's produced.
I didn't say ALL choreographed matches were bad. I said REGAL is a good worker. Although Ultimate Warrior vs Hulk Hogan (WM) and The Rock vs Hulk Hogan (WM) were good matches (and choreographed), I am sure you agree that the matches didn't need good workers but wrestlers who were OVER. Had Test and Albert done the exact same matches, they would have been booed out of the building even if the WORK itself was better.Someone else mentioned that a wrestler could be good even if he didn't wrestle classics all the time. There is a reason why you all discuss Regal in this thread. He stands out. Ok, he is British but he does also have great facial expressions, fascinating mannerism and unique wrestling style in WWE. If Test or Albert disappeared from WWE next week nobody would have taken note because they are "WWE style" clones who is no different from other "card fillers" and can be replaced by ANY other "WWE style" clone, except for Albert's hairy body.
  10. I enjoy watching William Regal. WWE doesn't allow him to wrestle like he could because they want to put boundaries on their performers. That's WWE's fault. There is a reason why Chris Jericho's and Chris Benoit's wrestling is less exciting now than it was in the mid-1990s, and that's not because they have suddenly lost their skills or become older. The problem is "WWE style". Wrestlers in WWE are supposed to wrestle in a certain way. The result is that most of the performers are more or less clones. When someone, such as Regal, has a unique style and is able to provide something different, he is forced adapt to a style that is the so-called "WWE style". Maybe he has been poor to adapt to the style, or maybe he prefers to wrestle his own style. He has wrestled in the States since the early 1990s BECAUSE of his unique style and has had pride in continuing wrestling a "British" style. I think that is a credit to him.Poor worker or not. Let's put REGAL and ANY WWE worker in the ring without pre-scripting a match and you will find out who is able to WORK a match. The word WORK in this case means WORK a match and not choreograph 3 minutes of rope running with added crash bangs......Regal = good worker.

  11. i love Regals inring style it just a shame not many people on the wwe roster can work taht style. on the mic he's one of the best.

That's the PROBLEM. All of WWE wrestlers working a similar style with no one able to adapt to different styles.WWE wrestlers work the WWE style of wrestling. It is a shame when you in recent years have watched WWE PPVs and you notice that the best worker is STILL Ric Flair. Regal is a great worker but his style makes no sense in short 2 minute matches. Depending on what style of wrestling you like, a few year sago when Regal wrestled RVD on Wrestlemania, I though that was the best match of the show.I really hope Regal is back in the ring and on the microphone soon!
  12. I have made a number of points relating to the discussion, and I also pointed out that your title was perhaps unfairly/incorrectly titled. However, because I was the one who made that point, you see it as flaming.I won't even bother next time.

Terje limited the discussion to the British wrestling industry. I don't find any rules against limiting discussions. Science always have limitations, i.e. ways to simplify the world. It could have been a discussion about the wrestling industry in general but I guess Terje can limit the discussion to British wrestling if he wants to. Why not? Afterall, he started the thread. He came up with a few examples from Scandinavian wrestling. Those examples were to illustrate what he was looking for in the discussion, i.e. to give the forum members examples of what he was thinking about.I believe some wrestlers respond to internet critics because some of these critics are very narrow-minded and very harsh. Most critics are either overly positive or negative. Some critics are very negative even though 99% of the LIVE crowd have enjoyed themselves. Wrestlers do not have time to respond to all critics but they choose a few, mostly negative ones, and respond to them. If someone writes that you are bad wrestler and should die, I guess you have the right to write that this keyboard geek doesn't know what he is talking about. There is at least one member of this forum who has written in essence that one particular British wrestler should die because he is bad.
