There's no way he doesn't - eventually. He'd never have gone back to the creative environment before but I'm absolutely sure that in another year or two, it will be unrecognisable from that POV and they'll throw money at him. Punk went back. He was the one I really thought never would.

Despite what he's claimed Punk always wanted to go back and tried to go back several times before the AEW offer came along. The people with a vendetta always seem to go back. Mox seems a bit different because he doesn't have a vendetta or outrage or enemies. He just wants to wrestle the way he wants to and where he wants to. If he does end up back there it doesn't really feel as momentous as others returning because he never had that huge falling out. If his decision ends up money based I'm pretty sure Tony Khan will match any offer WWE throw at him.

  2. I remember from Jericho's podcast a bit where Mox described a promo Vince wrote for him where he described riding to the arena backwards on a bicycle and other various hijinx and when Mox asked why he would say that Vince said "because you're wacky Dean Ambrose, people are gonna' love it! and Mox responded with "Vince, this is what a stupid person does. Only someone stupid would do any of these things. Why would anyone want to cheer someone so stupid?".

I wish someone would write a book with nothing but mad and terrible Vince creative story. What a lunatic (and rapist).

  3. Yeah I can't personally see Mox going back to WWE. He doesn't have any huge personal issues like others have but he just seems to hate the environment and it doesn't seem to mesh with his vision of what wrestling should be or what he wants to do with his career - namely complete creative freedom. He signed a long term deal with AEW about a year or so ago anyway. If his body is still holding up by the time his AEW contract finishes then who knows but he doesn't seem motivated by that big pay day - he does deathmatches for GCW for fun!

  4. I checked out the Punk/Drew and Rock/Cody segs out of interest.

The Punk/Drew stuff was pretty bad. I'm assuming the praise from this is that it's so rare to see promos where people speak somewhat like normal human beings rather than weird robots that it blinded people to how lame the material was. Firstly, a 20 minute segment building up a guest commentator rather than the TITLE MATCH AT WRESTLEMANIA itself is pretty funny for how stupid it is. Punk's stuff was standard Punk stuff , "oooh look how edgy he is! He's shooting!", textbook CM Punk teenage edgelord schtick. Always goes for the low hanging fruit. This segment also had that "breaking the fourth wall" type stuff that I hate with a passion. Drew's line about rehab was an absolute cracker but apart from that I didn't really feel like he brought much. His time in America has made his accent very strange too. Really quite baffled by the comments from people that this felt wild, chaotic and out of control. Felt like the same old shit to me.

The Cody/Rock stuff on the other hand was all very good. I don't know where the weird thing where wrestling fans call anything good "cinema" came from -this just felt like proper good old fashioned wrestling to me. The main problem though is when the heel is bigger, stronger, cooler and more charismatic than the babyface...that's going to cause a few problems down the road. But just looking at the segment alone there's few things better than the traditional bloody beatdown on a babyface before the big match and this was a good one. If it was Cody vs Rock instead of Cody and Freakin' Rollins vs Rock and Roman then this angle would have probably made me want to watch it. Alas, I will be skipping Wrestlemania this year.

You don’t think endless feuds with Strowman and Corbin were meaningless time killers?

Unrelated to the discussion at hand but fuck me, that initial Reigns/Strowman feud was just some of the absolute best stuff. It got Strowman over as an absolute killer and it was the only time Roman was even close to being accepted as a babyface.

Because you’re being a wee crank.

How come ‘American Nightmare’ is so overflowing with meaning that Cody’s character has to exactly match your head canon. But ‘its wrestling’ is so meaningless that you react with salty bafflement?

Not really sure what your issue is here but in an attempt to explain what should be simple and obvious.

My original post simply asked "what's the American Nightmare stuff all about"? Someone else posted their thoughts and I responded with my own views. I'm not angry or stressed that Cody's nickname doesn't fit with some kind of "head canon" that you've imagined I have. We're just discussing stuff here because discussing stuff is interesting and fun. That's the whole point of this place. Meanwhile someone just responding to you saying nothing more than "It's wrestling" with no further explanation is completely meaningless and one could argue goes against the entire point of even coming to this DISCUSSION forum and is actually a fairly patronising response. But if you want to continue to make assumptions about what emotions I'm having in response to this nonsense, please feel free.

I think it's harsh to say everything with Cody is surface level. If anything I think he overthinks things, but just isn't as clever as he wants to be. The stuff with the kids and disabled fans is genuine too, I think.

To clarify I don't think Cody as a person is surface level or shallow. I think he's a very genuine and decent bloke who very much wants to be a hero to fans everywhere and that's awesome. But for me his character work and storytelling in matches comes off as very surface level type stuff lacking in real depth, he's never seen a short cut he hasn't liked and he likes to create moments but often doesn't create the connective tissue around them to give them real meaning. But everyone else seems to like him so what the fuck do I know?

My point is, you're overthinking it. It's wrestling. It's really not that deep.

If you're making a point then actually explain your point. Just writing "it's wrestling" is completely meaningless.

By contrast, The Acclaimed are absolutely finished as an act. It was insane watching how little reaction they got here. Max waffling on to silence. Remember how over they once were? I can’t decide if it’s the lacklustre onscreen stuff, or Max Caster being a bit of an idiot on Twitter, but either way this felt like the last hurrah for a team destined for the bin. They’re done.

I think more than any other reason it's as simple as they've just had their time. Every act has a shelf life. They are the modern day equivalent of the New Age Outlaws and that includes everyone just kinda' being bored with them after 2 years. They've done everything and there's not really anything left in the tank that can interest audiences anymore. They should be happy with that and just call it a day.

  10. I'd go with an Eddie Kingston vs Christian Cage feud next. Both have just lost their titles so I feel like that could be the genesis of a story between them. Also they are such diametrically opposed characters I think they would really spark. Imagine the promos!

In 2024, why isn't Christian going over Adam Copeland?

Because it's the end of a long feud where the heroic babyface finally gets victory over the dastardly cheating evil heel.

It's been a fun feud but I'm also excited for the future now that Copeland has closed the Christian chapter and can have a fresh start and really start engaging with the rest of the AEW roster.

His dad was "The American Dream" and Cody wanted to oppose that. The opposite of a dream is a nightmare, hence "The American Nightmare"

Yeah I understand it as a character concept but the "American Nightmare" isn't actually the character he's portraying. How has he opposed his Dad or portrayed a character in stark contrast to the American Dream? How is accomplishing more than his father make him the "Nightmare"? And I don't think he's stepping out of his father's shadow when he brings him up all the time, mentions his family at the start of his entrance music and has his nickname tattoo'd on his chest.

To me, the true American Nightmare would be someone who completely rejects his fathers character, values and spits on his family legacy. That would be a genuine opposite of the 'American Dream'.  His current character has loads in common with his father's character. So why is a character primarily based on virtuous values and principles calling himself the Nightmare?

  13. So "The American Nightmare" is now part of the "American Dream Team". Why the fuck is he called the American Nightmare anyways? Has that ever been explained? His character is basically the biggest red white and blue flag shagger since Hogan so I've never really got it.

And it definitely doesn't help that the "American Nightmare" has "Dream" tattoo'd on his chest!

I'm assuming the only reason he uses the nickname is because it sounds cool. Like with everything with Cody it's all surface level schtick.

Strip him of the journey that the viewer has gone on from his return from excursions through first title win, G1 and Wrestle Kingdoms highs and lows and ascent to the top, and any prior knowledge of his previous matches and…. oh look, that bloke did a dropkick. And? Anyone can do a dropkick? What’s special?

Yeah that sounds about right. However at the same time I don't think AEW are really doing anything wrong at all with his current presentation. He's being presented as a top star and sometimes you just need to go all in on someone and hopefully with time the audience who are unfamiliar with him will catch up and see them as a top star too.

On the other hand I couldn’t stand Bottoms and the best part of it was when it ended. Heard nothing but good things about it so clearly I’m in the minority, but man I thought it was shite

I also really hated it. One of those modern comedies where the characters are just constantly endlessly talking and they are all saying weird shit and no one is reacting to any of the weird shit that people are just constantly endlessly saying without a single moment to breath.

  16. I haven't seen any of Okada outside AEW so this legendary status they've given him is a bit confusing to me because he hasn't hugely impressed in-ring. He's working a slow and safe style but I'm not really buying him as this super talent that they are telling me he is. Thankfully the Young Bucks as his dickhead henchmen are doing tremendous work and really making the character stuff sparkle. Brilliant booking really as I think Okada would be pretty lost without them two holding him up.

After hearing for so long how great Okada is in-ring I'm looking forward to seeing him put on a top performance. Soon hopefully.

  17. Yeah Zack Knight is proper cringe. I can imagine his act working at the working men's clubs in front of children and pissed up old ladies but his panto snarling is fucking embarrassing.

I love Nigel constantly taking the piss out of Danielson but hope it never leads to a match. The retired  wrestler turned commentator coming back for one last fight is the ultimate babyface story. It doesn't really work when it's a heel constantly ripping the piss out of a babyface coming out of retirement. If the roles were reversed and it was Danielson picking on Nigel the Commentator I'd be all for it but the way things are currently it just doesn't work as a story for me.

  18. Just finished The Curse. An absolutely incredibly series overall featuring some of the best acting and complex character dynamics I've ever seen and a fascinating portrayal of a deeply abusive relationship between two awful people in a way I haven't seen before.

However the finale left me in two minds. On one hand it was a wildly unpredictable and hilarious finale that perfectly encapsulated the series themes. But on a plot/story level it left me fairly unsatisfied.

  19. Fuck me, they're going to have to turn Mercedes heel soon aren't they? Pretty hard to cheer her, even Toronto seemed to give up after the initial CEO chants. She's coming across as insanely phoney and unlikable. That she basically came out just to be like "hey, I made the production team put together a video about how great I am, watch it!" isn't exactly top babyface behaviour.

  20. Trailer for the new show The Acolyte is out. 2 episode premier in June. Visually it looks fairly generic but I'm definitely intrigued. Anything Star Wars that doesn't have Filoni/Favreau's shitty hands on it has my interest. I'm still genuinely shocked at how mind bogglingly terrible Book of Boba Fett, Obi Wan, Mando season 3 and Ahsoka were. Just the fact that it's coming from someone with their own singular narrative vision and it won't be tied in with all the other bollocks means it actually has a chance to be something good. And that it's taking place in a time period the films/TV shows haven't ever explored is quite exciting.
