One of my oldest and dearest friends has had a whole life of medical problems. He was born with a hole in the heart and has been in and out of hospital all his life. He had a kidney transplant at 15 and emergency open heart surgery at 28 and almost died of a heart infection 5 years ago.

Exactly 1 month before Christmas he was diagnosed with a stage 3 lymphoma and was put on a course of chemo almost immediately. I’ve just been told via his family he’s now tested positive for COVID in hospital. He’s only 41 and is the nicest, warmest and most incredible person I’ve ever met and doesn’t deserve this. The fact he’s going through this all on his own is truly heartbreaking.

We’ve got a WhatsApp group with his closest friends and all 5 of us are worried sick, but at least we can keep in touch with him.

What struck me most is that despite the severity and aggression of his cancer, we’re all much more worried about a virus none of us had heard of a year ago.

I've my fingers firmly crossed for you Scratch. Try not to overthink it, obviously he is in a really difficult situation but covid is such a fickle virus. I've heard of numerous immunocomprised people who shrug it off.

Do what you can to support him and his family through not only Covid but also his Lymphoma and that's all you can do.

Thanks, I’ve just bought this. I’ll probably need a palate cleanser before reading more about the Nazis, perhaps something funny (the book I read before this was Nothing To Envy, which is real life accounts of living in North Korea - another harrowing read) but it sounds a worthwhile read.

Hope you enjoy, a palate cleanser might not be a bad idea. I have to say nothing to envy sounds intriguing, I've a couple fiction novels I am really keen to get through soon but will get this on my kindle for after.

  4. I feel like this is an obvious one but is absolutely fantastic. Probably more a Stone Cold promo than a Austin vs Hart promo but it encapsulated what he was/became superbly. He looks fucking boss throughout.

My personal favourite as much due to it reminding me of the build and influenced by the match being in my top 3 ever.

I used this specifically because it convinced my flatmate who was hadn't watched since 2000 to skip going to bed and watch.

In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson.

It’s an excellent book about William Dodd, the American ambassador to Germany during the 1930s. It’s both fascinating and terrifying - you can, depressingly, draw parallels between the account this book gives of the rise of the Nazis to the rise of certain present day politicians and ideologies.

It’s also really interesting to read about things I’d never really considered - for instance, tourists were able to visit Nazi Germany. Many of them were going there, having a great time and deciding the horror stories about the Nazis must be untrue. This was long before the war of course, but it seems so strange.

Travellers in the Third Reich explores this extensively as well. Was first hand letter that up most of the book so was a fairly unfiltered insight.  Seemed to be a mixture of people genuinely oblivious, knowingly oblivious, willfully disregarding human rights crimes and supporting the human rights crimes.

Seemed largely to depend on nationality with British and Americans particuarly treat particularly favourably.

After coming down with a fairly bad cough and temperature I’ve went and got tested this morning. I’m almost certain it’s going to be negative but can’t really risk it.

Smart move and don't be shocked if it is positive. I would have sworn up and down before my positive test it was nothing.

  7. I would have to agree with @LazyMcLopezand @Chris B that Civil War 2 is difficult to recommend. Not offensively bad but I found it underwhelming considering an interesting premise.

Of the characters you've mentioned I can't say I've noiticed and standouts in recent years (depends how far back you go). Although I enjoyed Tom Kings run it has lulls. I find the Cold Days story arcs one of my favourite Batman stories ever for the exploration of Batman and Bruce Wayne.

Going back to a recommendation I gave above my favourite Batman I've read recently is Batman: White Knight. Although that is a stand alone and non-traditonal.

Immortal Hulk is a very good recommendation . Probably the strongest ongoing of the last 2 years, lovely unique feel that moves at a nice pace. I've also really enjoyed Donny Cates current run on Venom but I know the character can be marmite.

No but this reminds me of when I read Trainspotting for the first time.

I'd seen the film a tonne of times (was probably about 16 when I first read it versus around 12 with the film) and was incredibly confused by Ken. I kept thinking "I don't remember any Ken character"

I asked a friend who's Mum was Scottish who duly informed me. Massively confusing as every other word in the book is Ken.

I moved from England to Scotland at the start of secondary school and would hear people talk about doing or going for  a jobbie.  It took a good year to realise it wasn't a local way of talking about completing a task.

    The Ripper (Netflix)

I've become tired of Netflix's crime docs but this was less flashy and making less of an effort to ape The Imposter than their usual stuff. Focuses a lot more on how awful the police were during the hunt for Peter Sutcliffe and that any of them chose to take part in this shows some nerve. Really well put together and a bit more sensitive than I was expecting.

I was surprised at how unaware of their incompetence they were. Saying that it was better than expected, it was alarming the tone and way they talked about the "prostitues".

    He has been for years.

Pretty amazed at this 'revelation' (as seems to be largely the case on here). Did people think the reporting of his 5+ star matches, or his character, in Japan was some kind of urban myth? Hardly excuseable in this day & age. Can't be that difficult to find the footage. OK, you may just have chosen not to watch it, but if I came on here saying how great some former WWE worker looked, never having watched them for the previous umpteen years, through choice, I can imagine the response(s). He is that good and we've been telling anyone that'd listen, for years. I think the IWGP Heavyweight Title probably trumps a dodgy heel turn & an appearance or two on IMPACT. Glad everyone's finally enjoying him at something like his best.

Did you ever consider people watched him and didn't consider him a star? I watched plenty of his stuff in Japan and enjoyed almost all of it but didn't feel he came across as a particular star and felt the "reporting of 5+ star matches" to be over egging his actual performances a touch.

That being said he was clearly very good.

  13. That is one handsome cat @scratchdj

My weekend has been spent extending and repairing a new indoor run for my free ranging flock. Having to keep them inside due to guidance with avian flu present.

Arthur managing to look regal but the reality is he is gormless and had a total failure in helping round the girls up into the run. Took 45 minutes to move them 150 feet.

We've had a lovely day as well so maybe the reluctance was to leave the rare sunshine.

  15. I'm an NHS employee so I am to able access the vaccine now. I say that but the line for booking has been down since Friday morning and we've been told not to phone again until this Friday.

I'm not massively concerned about a slight delay but it did make me chuckle when they communicated that they had been caught out by the number of staff phoning up. I mean did they think people would wait a couple months to book.

YJB looked good at 4. To be fair he could do a job anywhere in the top order.

Considering how good he is at scoring of spin moving him down the order isn't the worst idea. You certainly can't do that with Roy.

For me I loved his front foot power lofted straight drive.

The pure strength behind it was insane.  Even in his fortys they were picking balls out of the river at New Hall when he went for it.

That lofted drive was jaw dropping when I started watching, he played it beautifully but it didn't seem proper.
