  2. The final scores appeared at the top of the thread on Monday night, but given the madcap outcome at Tottenham the table might as well have been worked out before then. Nobody scored any points for that, and to make matters worse it was the randomly selected 'wildcard' fixture so there were no more bonuses awarded beyond the D2Ds either. Speaking of which, Shy Dad got his bet wrong but the result was in doubt until very late on and would've catapulted him into second place had Hereford turned things around, but ultimately the referee led his Gills side to a 2-0 win so everyone else here got two bonus points apiece.

That left him as joint lowest scorer and only just hanging on inside the top half. The only movement sees some shuffling among the chasing pack as ultimo's lead remains at 10 points. Although not into double figures for the round, Rory deserves a special mention for getting the scoreline at Bramall Lane spot on, while fellow Robin seph was also one of the few participants to get more than one three-pointer, making him the weekly best performer this time out and hopefully provoking a proper race to avoid the wooden spoon too.

Of the other matches, victories for Rangers and Bayern generally proved fruitful, with successes for Brentford, Palace and Aberdeen also being mostly good for one-pointers. A late triumph for Newcastle and a score draw at Goodison, on the other hand, turned out a tad tougher to guess beforehand.

The next card should go live in the original post in just a tick.

  3. Premier League

    Brentford 3-1 West Ham United
    Burnley 0-1 Crystal Palace
Everton 2-3 Brighton & Hove Albion
    Sheffield United 1-1 Wolves
    Newcastle United 2-1 Arsenal
    Spurs 2-0 Chelsea

    FA Cup First Round

    Hereford w/Shy Dad 0-3 Gillingham

Scottish League Cup semi-finals (@ Hampden)
    Hibernian 0-2 Aberdeen
    Heart of Midlothian 1-3 Rangers

    German Bundesliga
    Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Bayern Munich

  4. The results went into the opening post last night following the conclusion of the back-and-forth game in Leuven which nobody scored any points from anyway, with only joint top scorer Stinky Dad – the only participant to get a Scottish Cup scoreline spot on – even so much as betting on a draw. He moves into second place in the table, reaching his century but still 10 points behind ultimo. A similar level of optimism about the outcome in South Wales meant Rory kept seph from being weekly worst performer despite the latter getting his D2D bet wrong. The gap to Pete therefore remains the same.

Not sure I like Cardiff much anymore (or indeed Belgium, which is where I met that Ebbw Vale guy who despised Swansea) but it's not their fault that we decided to follow the lead of some two-bob outfit from north of the river by sacking a manager out of the blue within the past week. Anyway, MVP RULZ was also equal highest scorer this time out on a baker's dozen and he could certainly do with more rounds worthy of a champion like that. Shy Dad joins him and Stinky on an unlucky number thanks to a late goal from Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Yes, that does imply the 'wildcard' match was randomly selected as #1 again. With Arsenal winning 4-0 a few people were on course for a bonus point each, but as soon as the Gunners hit 5 it caused both the bonuses to make their way to Herefordshire... which we'll be doing this weekend.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Elsewhere, wins for Bournemouth, Man City, Real Madrid and PSV all proved fruitful alongside a score draw at Molineux, but one of the shocks of the day north of the border caught everyone out as East Fife found themselves on the wrong end of an upset.

So, as I hinted above, there'll be an FA Cup D2D among the set of 10 that should be up in the initial post shortly.

  5. Premier League

    Arsenal 3-0 Sheffield United
    Bournemouth 2-2 Burnley
    Wolves 1-1 Newcastle United
    Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City

Cardiff City 0-0 Bristol City w/seph

    Scottish Cup Round 2
    Dunbar United 0-3 East Fife
    Huntly 0-2 Forfar Athletic

    La Liga
    Barcelona 1-0 Real Madrid

    Eredivisie
    PSV Eindhoven 3-1 Ajax

    UEFA Women's Nations League - Group A1
    Belgium 1-3 England

  6. The final scores were up in the original post on Sunday (but yes, this week it could've even been Saturday night if I'd been on the ball) and the table has been updated now too. Some very healthy scoring in the top half, with joint second highest scorer Vegeta now best of the rest too. At the other end, seph picked slightly late but managed to avoid the weekly wooden spoon, though he's still well adrift of equal worst performer Pete

Just ahead of that duo is still reigning champion MVP RULZ, whose D2D bet didn't come off. The Owls gave a good account of themselves but succumbed to a late winner at Vicarage Road, meaning everybody else claimed two bonus points apiece.

The first person to go over the 100-point mark this season is ultimo who now leads by 9. He was only outright best this week thanks to knowing his own team better than anyone else, mind. The randomly selected 'wildcard' fixture was match #6 from Bramall Lane, where almost the whole field went for an away win, but only he correctly guessed that it'd finish 2-1 on something of an emotionally charged evening for the visitors. That meant he kept both wildcard bonuses for himself and tipped him over the edge into overall top scorer territory.

Elsewhere, in a round where the average was into double figures, only perhaps the sole American outcome proved tough to foresee for most. Score draws at Stamford Bridge and the City Ground, plus widely expected victories for Brentford, Man City, Bayern and Eintracht Frankfurt all yielded strong amounts of points across the board.

Only three D2Ds to go among the first go-around, and we'll be getting another one of those out the way this weekend – albeit a Severnside derby that I ought to be dreading. And which I'm surprised isn't on the telly. Anyway, that and the rest of the card will go live at the top of the thread very soon.

  7. Premier League

    Bournemouth 1-2 Wolves
    Brentford 1-0 Burnley
Manchester City 3-1 Brighton & Hove Albion
    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Luton Town
    Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
    Sheffield United 2-2 Manchester United

    Championship
Watford 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday w/MVP RULZ

    German Bundesliga
    Hoffenheim 0-2 Eintracht Frankfurt
    Mainz 1-3 Bayern Munich

    MLS
New England Revolution 2-0 Philadelphia Union

  8. The results of the actual matches went into the opening post on Monday night, with the FPL Cup scores slipping into Tuesday morning. Oh, and the table's been updated now too. None of the FPL Cup meetings ended in draws this time.

With regard to the two late pickers: even though we don't include Saturday lunchtime starts, 2 o'clock is considered fair game. In fact, the tie I attended this past Saturday kicked off at that time (six goals for three quid – not too shabby) so there's no excuse. At least that duo actually played though, unlike seph who is now getting cast adrift in the main competition, even if he isn't doing too badly in the Cup. In the specific case of Shy Dad: no, we won't make any exceptions if Hereford end up on Friday night again in a couple of weeks.

Anyway, both of those avoided being lowest scorer as Rory took that dubious honour to sink to sixth on a 'nice' overall points total. At the top, ultimo extends his lead by a point, whilst Stinky is the round's biggest climber, his regular total of a dozen (out of 27 due to the abandonment of Belgium-Sweden) being augmented by wildcard bonuses. The randomly selected fixture was match #3, Norway v Spain, where everyone correctly went for an away win, but only he got the scoreline spot on.

Elsewhere, further away victories for Portugal, Ireland, Holland and Slovakia and a home success for Northern Ireland were almost universally good for at least one-pointers as international weeks are traditionally high-scoring like that. On the other hand, triumphs for Hungary and Wales plus a controversial Merseyside derby outcome caught most people out.

A new set of 10 will be up in the first post shortly, as the men's side of things returns to proper football and we knock off a couple of Championship D2Ds over the next fortnight.

  9. Euro 2024 qualifiers

    Northern Ireland 3-0 San Marino
    Hungary 1-1 Serbia
    Norway 1-3 Spain
    Wales 2-1 Croatia
    Belgium 1-0 Sweden
    Bosnia-Herzegovina 0-2 Portugal
    Gibraltar 0-3 Ireland
    Greece 1-2 Netherlands
    Luxembourg 0-0 Slovakia

    WSL
    Liverpool 2-2 Everton

  10. Apologies for lateness this week. The results only went into the first post last night since I didn't check the forum at all during my long weekend in Munich. Then tonight I noticed my initial attempt to update the table was a load of utter nonsense and my laptop went haywire the first time I tried to upload an accurate version. Then the chair I started typing this on gave out. So yeah, the universe was against this being ready a few hours ago. Besides, I don't think anybody's particularly enthused by the prospect of an international round, right?

Anyway, I've left a reminder of the FPL Cup standings on the right ahead of the next batch of group games. In the main competition, ultimo still leads but top scorer TildeGuy keeps the gap more than reachable. Worst performer Shy Dad sinks from second spot to fifth, but seph only got one more point than he did and is now further adrift of Pete at the bottom of the classification. Mercifully, in a week where I didn't need any further complications, the wildcard fixture was randomly selected afterwards as match #3, Fulham's expected home win over The Blades, from which everybody got the right outcome but not the exact scoreline, so all it did was raise the weekly average score by a point.

If the wildcard had landed elsewhere, it could really have put the cat amongst the pigeons: the emphatic nature of victories for Chelsea and Everton surprised most people, although successes for Rangers and Juve plus a late comeback triumph for Man United were generally good for at least one-pointers. Score draws at Molineux, the AmEx and Tynecastle produced a mixed bag of guesses, whilst a late defeat for Man City at the Emirates caught out a majority of pickers.

Didn't actually get to see a game in person this past weekend, but I did visit four grounds and actually got to step onto the hallowed turf of my D2D pick, Unterhaching. Oh well, onto Y Felinheli and the Welsh Cup this Saturday then... which won't feature on the next card, but nine Euro 2024 qualifiers and a WSL clash will. Look out for that at the top of the thread shortly.

  11. Premier League

    Burnley 1-3 Chelsea
    Everton 1-1 Bournemouth
    Fulham 2-0 Sheffield United
    Manchester United 2-1 Brentford
    Wolves 2-2 Aston Villa
Brighton & Hove Albion 2-3 Liverpool
    Arsenal 1-2 Manchester City

    Scottish Premiership
    Hearts 1-0 Hibernian
    St Mirren 0-0 Rangers

    Serie A
    Juventus 3-1 Torino

  12. The results went into the opening post on Sunday night, and the table was updated then too. Rory got into double figures and is now the main challenger to ultimo at the summit. Vegeta got his D2D bet wrong as Man City somehow conspired to come unstuck at Wolves. Only myself and MVP RULZ claimed bonuses from that, and even then, we couldn't bring ourselves to plump for an actual home win. Unusually, Vegeta still did really well and was second best performer as he and seph left Pete in their wake at the foot of the standings.

The latter was the sole beneficiary of the randomly selected 'wildcard' fixture, which was match #2, Luton upending the form book at Goodison Park. Elsewhere, victories for Arsenal, Newcastle and West Ham's men and Man United and Chelsea's women all proved fruitful, but a late winner for Spurs, home reverse at Old Trafford and stalemate in Vienna all caught most people out.

No D2D or FPL Cup this coming weekend, just an ordinary card coming up in the initial post very soon.

  13. Premier League

    Bournemouth 0-3 Arsenal
    Everton 2-0 Luton Town
    Manchester United 1-0 Crystal Palace
    Newcastle United 3-0 Burnley
West Ham United 3-1 Sheffield United
    Wolves 1-1 Manchester City w/Vegeta
    Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Women's Super League

    Aston Villa 3-2 Manchester United
    Chelsea 0-0 Spurs

    Austrian Bundesliga
    Austria Vienna 2-1 Rapid Vienna

  14. The final scores went up in the original post... well, last night actually, but I was at least able to figure out the bonuses on Sunday. It then had to be edited again just now because the initially abandoned Ajax game was only completed behind closed doors this afternoon (they're lucky both teams had a free midweek – although knowing the way the Dutch schedule their fixtures more logically, that might actually be by design).

The full table has now been updated at last. In a lower-scoring round than last time, Pete got his D2D bet wrong and everybody else claimed their bonus points, although many of those incorrectly went for a home Arsenal win. That allows Vegeta to sneak ahead of him again and for seph to narrow the gap to both of them. Top scorer Stinky Dad now has his sights set on the top half, while at the summit ultimo still leads but there's been a bit of shuffling among the chasing pack.

The randomly selected 'wildcard' match was #7, the Alsace-Lorraine derby, which Shy Dad got spot on to nab two bonus points all to himself. Elsewhere, victories for the Manchester giants and PSG plus draws at Craven Cottage and Kenilworth Road all proved fruitful, but yet another reverse for misfiring Chelsea caught most people out, whilst the international we waited until Tuesday for turned out to be a dud. Nobody pessimistically predicted a smash-and-grab success for Holland, understandably.

Okay, that'll do. The next set of 10 should go live at the top of the thread momentarily.

  15. Premier League

    Crystal Palace 1-1 Fulham
    Luton Town 1-2 Wolves
    Manchester City 3-0 Nottingham Forest
    Burnley 1-3 Manchester United
    Arsenal 2-1 Spurs w/Olympic Pete
    Chelsea 0-0 Aston Villa

    Ligue Un

    Metz 0-2 Strasbourg

    Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 Marseille

    Eredivisie
    Ajax 2-2 Feyenoord

    UEFA Women's Nations League A Group 1
    Netherlands 0-1 England

  16. The results went into the opening post on Sunday night and the table was figured out soon after that. It was an unusual week as I got my D2D bet wrong yet was top scorer anyway. Unwisely, ultimo was the only one not to disagree with me which means he was outright worst performer, so his lead is now cut to just 5 points. The 'wildcard' fixture was randomly selected after all scores were in as match #3, Brighton's win at Old Trafford, which was more of an imposing fortress during many of our formative years.

The two Dads were the only ones to at least get the right result to claim a bonus point each, if not the exact scoreline. (And yes, I did leave Pascal Groß on the bench in the Fantasy League. Grr.) A lot of movement in both halves of the standings this time, but it's still the usual early-season churn. Also it's not that surprising after a round where the average haul was in double figures.

Why was that then? Well, victories for Villa, Fulham, Spurs, Man City, Arsenal and Dortmund all proved fruitful at least for one-pointers, with stalemates at Dean Court (the first of the EPL campaign) and at the Yankee Stadium (not a great advert for the game if any baseball fans turned up mistake) being the only other outcomes to catch most people out.

Right, don't think there's anything more to mention other than that the next card will be up in the initial post in just a tick.

  17. I'll make my picks earlier than usual this time so you can all see how I'm betting on the D2D:

    Premier League

    Aston Villa 3-1 Crystal Palace
    Fulham 2-0 Luton Town
Manchester United 2-2 Brighton & Hove Albion
    Spurs 2-1 Sheffield United
West Ham United 0-3 Manchester City
    Bournemouth 1-1 Chelsea

    Everton 0-1 Arsenal

    German Bundesliga

    Freiburg 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

    3. Liga
    Spielvereinigung Unterhaching w/me 3-0 Saarbrücken

    MLS
New York City 0-0 New York Red Bulls

  18. On 9/10/2023 at 11:25 PM, ultimo the great said:

Missed this match 0-2 to Wales

Spot on! That late second goal for Wales actually cost me 2 points, but I was watching on S4C and they did deserve it.

And yes, sorry for the delay Pete. Will try to get these up a bit sooner in future weeks now that top-flight club football is back. International rounds used to be a chance to fill your boots, but it was more of a struggle this time as nobody made it into double figures. Despite the even spread of scores, there was only one draw in the opening set of FPL Cup fixtures. The next matchday for that will fall in mid-October.

As you can see from the table, seph got a much-needed boost as the weekly best performer, keeping him within touching distance of those directly above him. At the other end, ultimo still leads by 10 but Rory overtakes Shy Dad by the narrowest possible margin in the only bit of movement this time out. The tie for 7th place has just about been broken too. The 'wildcard' fixture was randomly selected as match #9, for which nobody got the exact scoreline but four participants did correctly think Watford would win at Charlton in the women's second tier to claim a bonus point apiece.

Elsewhere, it was slim pickings really. Only victories for Denmark, Greece and Holland were generally picked consistently. Score draws in Poland, Kosovo and North Macedonia produced a mixed bag of guesses alongside disappointing reverses for Norn Iron's men and Saints' ladies. Had you all forgotten that Italy actually lost at home to the Macedonians in a World Cup qualifying play-off not so long ago? I wouldn't have included it on the card if I'd thought it'd be a nailed-on away win.

Anyway, new set of 10 coming up lickety-split at the top of the thread, including a D2D...

  19. Euro 2024 qualifying (various groups)

    Ukraine 1-2 England (in Poland)
    Kosovo 0-3 Switzerland
    North Macedonia 1-1 Italy
    Kazakhstan 2-1 Northern Ireland
    Finland 2-2 Denmark
    Greece 3-0 Gibraltar
    Ireland 0-0 Netherlands
    Latvia 0-1 Wales

    Women's Championship

    Charlton Athletic 1-0 Watford
    Southampton 2-0 Sunderland

  20. The results went into the first post on Monday night, and the table has since been updated with the FPL Cup draw on the right-hand side if you want to check that out. I was only able to confirm that because I received the tenth and final PM needed for D2Ds last night, so sign-ups are now declared closed. Anyway, bit of a low-scoring week, not helped by the rain in Spain causing our first postponement of the season. The rule whenever that happens is that guesses will only count if the match is completed the following midweek. Clearly, since it's early doors and there's about to be an international break, that won't be the case here, so all picks for the game at the Wanda Metropolitano are null and void.

The other Spanish fixture ended up as the randomly selected 'wildcard' one. Everybody knew Barcelona would win against a team who'd played (and, disappointingly, lost) in Europe a few nights prior, but nobody thought it'd end 2-1, so the entire field gets an extra point each. Will be get a wildcard match that isn't either a dud or a full house anytime soon? Will the randomiser cough up a number other than #1 or #10??

Without the bonuses, the average haul would still only have been 5 points from a possible 27. Top scorer would've been Pete who moves further clear of joint worst performer seph. He was the only person other than ultimo to get an exact scoreline at all. The leader sneakily bet against his own side (which is within the rules of D2D even if it's not exactly in keeping with its spirit). With his Man Utd fan hat on, he probably attributes the win to VARsenal but in fairness, the Gunners were on top according to pretty much every statistic. Either way, it certainly helped him to open up a healthy 11-point advantage.

Elsewhere, victories for Spurs and Liverpool were generally good for one-pointers. Picks for the score draw at Brentford and the Old Firm derby turned into more of a mixed bag of guesses, whilst a home reverse for Chelsea and the other two Scottish outcomes caught most participants cold.

An all-European, mostly non-club card will be up at the top of the thread in just a tick.

  21. Sorry lads, bit of an overreaction the other night. Thanks to MVP RULZ for being so eagle-eyed (or should that be Owl-eyed?) Glad someone is paying attention! Sadly I can't write off those mistakes as 'haha, just testing'.

When it comes to the D2D, I usually check that as soon as it comes in. With the new routine this season which I hadn't settled into yet, I ended up trying to calculate it at the same time as all the other scores and got myself momentarily mixed up.

As for the 'wildcard' thing, well, I actually invented that so there's less of an excuse. It's never chosen until all the results are in, else it'd give me even more of an unfair advantage. In fairness the randomiser rarely throws up the first or last fixture as the selected one. I followed the score of that Arsenal game before I knew it'd be the wildcard, then watched the highlights and even had the "analysis" on (was Danny Murphy so I use the term loosely) in the background as I pottered about the kitchen on Saturday night.

The following day I was chatting to my Dad and suddenly talking as if it had been an Arsenal win (they're not his team, but they were his dad's side and we haven't scattered his ashes yet) and he didn't correct me, then it just spiralled from there. I love forward planning each week and season, but I don't enjoy double checking past scores and wrongly assumed I'd remembered the outcome correctly.

Unless I'm going doolally then it shouldn't happen again. Anyhow, my picks for the weekend:

    Premier League

    Brentford 3-1 Bournemouth
    Burnley 0-2 Spurs
    Chelsea 2-1 Nottingham Forest
    Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa
    Arsenal 3-0 Manchester United w/ultimo

    Scottish Premiership
    Rangers 1-0 Celtic
    Aberdeen 0-0 Hibernian
    Hearts 1-2 Motherwell

    La Liga
    Atlético Madrid 2-2 Sevilla
    Osasuna 0-3 Barcelona

  22. 17 minutes ago, MVP RULZ said:

    Me again sorry : )

Didn't that end 2-2? So we all got it wrong?

Shoot, of course it did. Dud outcome then. Apologies, will change the first post again.

Sod it, maybe it's just early-season rustiness, or perhaps you were all too polite to point out mistakes before but I'm beginning to wonder if we should even bother if I'm not cut out for this.

  23. The final scores were put into the original post on Monday night, and the table has since been updated. Do please let me know if you think I've made another slip-up. Assuming it's accurate, ultimo has continued to pick up where he left off with amazing form from the end of last season and now leads the pack at this early stage. Previous leader Shy Dad drops from first to fourth, which is the kind of thing that usually only happens in August too. Sandwiched in between them are Tilde and Rory, with the latter taking this week's best performer honours.

At the other end, Pete and seph both returned but are still suffering from that missed round. Of those who picked on time every week so far, Vegeta is somehow propping up the bunch despite averaging a more than respectable seven points over that short period. The 'wildcard' fixture was randomly selected as match #1 this time, Arsenal's comeback win over Fulham which everyone ultimately guessed right, but the bonuses only go to those with the correct scoreline, who get two extra points each.

Elsewhere, wins for Wolves (yup, a home reverse at Goodison isn't really a surprise anymore), Man Utd (Jeff Stelling would've been having a fit at five past three if he hadn't retired), Man City (despite that Haaland missed penalty which is almost tempting me to break my own rule and have a Fantasy League grumble), Liverpool (what a smash and grab, and what a different effect the red card had compared to Forest and the Cottagers) and Palmeiras all proved fruitful, as did a draw at Brentford.

Only a stoppage-time triumph for Chesterfield (which probably had the same effect on Stelling, come to think of it) and both American matches ending without a winner caught most people out.

I've received one more PM with Dare 2 Disagree choices since the last update, so thanks for that. We're not at the 'name and shame' phase yet, but I might initiate the convo myself if I don't hear from the one remaining person in the coming few days. Anyway, the next set of 10, including the second D2D of the season, will go live in the initial post shortly.

  24. Premier League

    Arsenal 3-1 Fulham
    Brentford 2-0 Crystal Palace
    Everton 0-1 Wolves
