Spent way too much time on this considering I'm already out the cup on head to head record's I think 😅

Eh? When I read that I thought I hadn't put the lines in properly, but the table clearly shows the top 4 in each group going through. Besides, even if I did decide to inject more Stephen Fry Jeopardy into proceedings by making it the top 2 only, you'd still have had a narrow chance because points difference is the first tie-breaker before we take into account head-to-heads.

Anyhow, the results were put in the initial post on Monday night, including the Cup scores. Once again there were no draws, with MVP RULZ overtaking Vegeta in Group A to ensure seeding in the knockout phase, while Stinky Dad kept up his 100% record in Group B and ultimo overtook both Chutney Spoon and the absent seph to remain on for the Double as well. The semis will take place during the next men's international break as you'd expect, but as mentioned above we're squeezing in a quarter-final stage later this month so here's the draw for that:

Fog Dude vs. Tim Healy's Chutney Spoon
MVP RULZ vs. ultimo the great
    RoryFice vs. Vegeta
Stinky Dad vs. I Bent My Wookie

Meanwhile over in the main competition Rory, as the only participant into double figures, has suddenly cemented the bronze position – a spot in nosebleed territory by his usual standards. There's now a nine-point gap at the summit, whereas seph is 24 points back if he decides to carry on, or else the Artist Formerly Known as Pete has a 20-point deficit to make up to me and Bent Wookie (yup, that's the short form of Shy's new name, deal with it).

The wildcard fixture turned out to be match #10, the huge Dutch clash, which ended up 1-1 with MVP RULZ and Rory both getting it spot on to earn a brace apiece. Elsewhere, Rory also got the exact scoreline from the Scottish Cup tie as everyone else understandably at least managed one point from that. Wins for Brighton, Villa, Man City and Inter Milan all generally proved fruitful alongside a score draw at "the Vitality" (i.e. Dean Court). Improbably higher-scoring draws at Turf Moor and St James's were tougher to guess beforehand, and a rare insipid reverse for Liverpool caught most people out since nobody thought the Gunners would triumph by two clear goals.

The next card, featuring yet another D2D, should be up in the first post very soon.

  3. No sooner had I replied to FLips' big write-up of Cool Spot than I opened up the next chapter of GamesMaster: The Oral History only to be confronted with this typically suggestive pose by host Dominik Diamond:

...but he later reveals that to his recollection the photo was taken in California, so perhaps there really was no promotion for the game using the American 7-Up mascot over here after all.

  4. Premier League

Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Crystal Palace
    Burnley 0-0 Fulham
    Newcastle United 3-1 Luton Town
    Sheffield United 2-2 Aston Villa
    Bournemouth 3-2 Nottingham Forest
    Arsenal 2-3 Liverpool
    Brentford 1-3 Manchester City

    Women's Scottish Cup Round 4
    Hamilton Academical 0-3 Celtic

    Serie A
    Inter 1-0 Juventus

    Eredivisie
    Ajax 0-2 PSV Eindhoven

  5. I had the SNES port of Cool Spot so the cheat inputs obviously wouldn't been different but other than that I'm sure it plays similarly enough. I don't think it needed more than three action buttons so the Mega Drive controller should've worked fine for it.

I call being aware that it was a 7-Up tie-in, but can't remember seeing the logo in-game unless it was from very early screenshots before those were removed for the PAL version? Like you said, that particular drink had a different mascot over here so we got different ads anyway. Perhaps the rules on product placement were just tighter in the UK, or maybe Virgin Interactive, as a British company, got some sort of deal to distribute it even without the visible PepsiCo branding?

Was probably a bit too generous on platformers at the time and might find it more frustrating these days. Don't think I ever finished it (definitely not without cheats if so) but it feels like I put a lot of hours in and enjoyed it for the most part.

Shy Dad - sorry @Fog Dude!

Not to worry, I'm rubbish at coming up with pub quiz team names too – which is why I write the questions these days. After Pete made his first name change, someone suggested to add previous names to profiles so I can actually see your former moniker to the left of your posts on desktop now. And yeah, it's a bit of a pain that this happened mid-season but unless there's something in the paido board I'm not aware of though, then it seems optimistic for Frankie to think Moo might stick around for a few weeks so I understand why people had to strike while the iron's hot.

Anyway, the results were at the top of the thread on Sunday night as usual, and the table (including new names) was updated soon after that. I've included the FPL Cup standings as well since there's a bit more room and also because the group stage will come to an end with the next matchday. In a high-scoring round, a quarter in the middle all move up a place, Pete Chutney Spoon goes two points further clear of seph while ultimo extends his lead over Stinky (still a Dad!) to eight points.

Tilde got his bet wrong but at least it's out of the way given what the weather's been like lately. Strangely, everyone except the current leader rightly disagreed with him to claim their bonuses, although even a couple of those incorrectly opted for a draw. Brighton's win at Bramall Lane was the 'wildcard' fixture and while nobody foresaw it finishing 2-5, it still yielded a point each for most – my tactic of plumping for draws backfired, and Rory also went for one there to miss out on an extra bonus. A lot of ties did go to a replay of course, and there was another near miss on Friday night... but all of those were not on our card.

Elsewhere, progress for Newcastle, Wolves and Man Utd all proved fruitful, alongside victories for the two Madrid giants. The other two outcomes in the fifth tier and Luton's late triumph at Goodison Park, on the other hand, caught a lot of participants out.

A new set of 10 will go live in the original post shortly.

  7. Suppose I could, in keeping with the thrust of the thread, add that Nana Foggy had lots of tins of gone-off rice pudding and the like in her cupboard when she passed... because behind them, it's where she'd been hiding the bottles of hard liquor that she'd been self-medicating with.

Actually come to think of it, that's probably not the type of anecdote for the jovial spirit of this discussion so far. Should probably stick to turning every convo into a grammar lecture instead.

They also handed out a lot of prizes at the end of the game. Had the feel of a kids sports day where everyone gets a prize. Also I don't know how much 1 Lakh is worth. Can anyone help me?

A lakh is 100k, so just under £950 if you're converting from rupees. Confusingly, in Indian maths they put the commas in different places from what we're used to over here.

And yeah, imagine not liking test cricket. Still the definitive form of the game.

  9. Well, I'm going for it and picking all five ties to need a replay:

    FA Cup Fourth Round

    Everton 1-1 Luton Town
Sheffield United 0-0 Brighton & Hove Albion
    Fulham 2-2 Newcastle United
    West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Wolves
    Newport County 2-2 Manchester United

    National League
    Aldershot Town 1-2 Rochdale
Dagenham & Redbridge 2-0 Kidderminster Harriers
    Gateshead 3-0 Barnet w/TildeGuy~!

    La Liga
    Las Palmas 0-3 Real Madrid

    Atlético Madrid 3-1 Valencia

Ironically in the UK reboot of Wheel of Fortune Stephen Fry is introduced to the strains of "Common Man".

Off topic, but Graham Norton's hosting the newest Wheel of Fortune revival. Fry is the presenter of the latest attempt to bring Jeopardy! to these shores.

Think ITV got some kind of two-for-one deal there so I can see how you'd get them mixed up.

  11. The results went up in the opening post on Sunday night, and the table was worked out straight after that. It didn't take long since it was a fairly low-scoring round, with Tilde slipping a place the only movement. At the top, ultimo moves a point further clear of Stinky whilst Pete* takes advantage of seph's wrong D2D bet to widen the gap to last place to a whopping 19 points. The latter basically had to gamble on an unlikely draw, but ultimately it ended up even more one-sided than anybody thought – though kudos to the duo who knew Dortmund would bag four goals on the day.

Everyone else got two bonus points each then, but there were no other bonuses since the randomly selected 'wildcard' fixture turned out to be #10, the French Cup tie in Sochaux. A few people plumped for a draw in Bordeaux but it was in fact the remaining two matches which went to penalties so were duds and yielded no ordinary points, let alone bonuses. And all three were unlikely home wins to boot – vive la Coupe !

No such problems in Scotland, where all the ties were decided in normal time. Expected progress for Hibs and Sevco were generally good for one-pointers, but the mild upsets at Airdrie and Bonnyrigg (largely ignored by Sportscene which I was only watching after Match of the Day ended early due to the winter break bollocks) caught almost everyone out. Credit to Rory for at least foreseeing the former shock. The other one is also only a one-division gap nowadays, but it's a team who'd spent most of their history at least three tiers below their opponents, beating the only unbeaten side in the league in the whole UK to get through to the last 16 for the first time ever, and as such deserved more media attention.

Last but not least, there were two domestic league games heading up the card as well. The West Midlands clubs tore up the form book as the Baggies suffered a rare defeat at Carrow Road (sorry Ralphy) and Brum managed a win at Stoke under a proper gaffer having offloaded a potato in the sack race a few weeks ago. Sadly neither of those outcomes was much good for most of us.

A new set of 10, including yet another D2D, should appear in the first post very soon. It'll again be half filled with Cup ties, but at least eight EPL teams will actually feature this time.

Our local one is the Odeon at the pleasingly stupid sounding John Halle's Hall.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Halle's_Hall

It's from the 15th century, so must be in the running for the oldest UK building with a cinema?

I read the first few posts of this thread with utter envy, because all of my regular moviegoing haunts in Somerset and North Wales have either been more typical chain cinemas than your example or indies which were nothing special architecturally inside or out, then for some reason this jogged my memory and I realised I've actually watched two films in a 14th-century building:

    spacer.png

The Barn Cinema in Dartington, Devon is where my grandparents took me to see The Straight Story, then a few years later after Nana Foggy passed I went back with just my grandad to catch Kingdom of Heaven. It's a delightfully cosy, intimate venue that as the name suggests, is located inside a converted former barn.

The above appears to be a more recent pic after the seating areas underwent a bit of a revamp. Looks like they've managed to squeeze a few more places in than before since tickets are understandably often in high demand among the locals.

    FA Trophy Fourth Round

    Welling United 1-2 Chesterfield

    Apologies for late entry

Unless I missed news of a much-delayed start in that fixture, then this pick is void too. And besides, the home side won anyway which rendered it a dud outcome on a day of upsets and near-shocks because most National League sides prioritise promotion these days.

The final scores went into the original post moments after the final whistle blew in Milan and the table update was figured out within the following couple of hours. A champion's effort from MVP RULZ saw him overtake Shy Dad, whilst TildeGuy leapfrogged me as I got my D2D bet wrong and, as is often the case, was also lowest scorer for the round.

Eight of the other nine participants took their bonus points, although most of those went for an away win with two betting on a draw, of whom Rory knew it'd be a stalemate. Ferrol mola pero o Rácing non after all, as it turns out.

Meanwhile, ultimo extends his lead over Stinky but by just a single point, whilst seph is only able to close the gap at the bottom by the same margin despite Pete's late posting.

Elsewhere, all five Championship results went with the form book, meaning they were generally good for one-pointers. The favourites also went through in the women's Cup, with a lot of guesses admirably close to the one-sided scoreline considering it was a derby (at Derby!) – on the continent, a score draw in Florence caught most people out, with a reverse on the road for Roma also strangely difficult to foresee. That last one of course meant the end of the line for José Mourinho in the Italian capital.

A new card with yet another D2D will go live in the initial post shortly, which will be dominated by the Scottish and French Cups... but don't worry too much, because the D2D game isn't in either of those competitions.

  16. It's only fair if I make my picks a bit earlier than usual this week so that everyone knows how I'm betting:

    Championship

    Cardiff City 2-2 Leeds United
    Southampton 3-1 Sheffield Wednesday
West Bromwich Albion 2-0 Blackburn Rovers
    Ipswich Town 3-0 Sunderland
    QPR 1-1 Watford

    FA Trophy Fourth Round
    Welling United 0-3 Chesterfield

    Women's Cup Fourth Round
    Derby County 0-2 Leicester City

    Liga Adelante
    Rácing Ferrol w/me 2-1 Espanyol
    Serie A
    Fiorentina 1-0 Udinese
    Milan 1-2 Roma

There are a lot of instances this season that I can pick a winner but I'm always one goal away, starting to wonder if it's possible to finish last but pick more correct winning teams than anyone else just never getting an actual score 🤣

And that's only knowing the bloody Celtic score haha.

Yup, frustrating that we were both one goal out there, but in fairness Rory did manage to get it spot on. And missing out on an extra two points there didn't stop you from being top scorer this time anyway. Bit of a strange week though, as despite the inevitable high scores, precise guesses were again hard to come by. There's only 5 points between best and worst effort at the end of this round's table since everyone who picked on time got 12-16 results out of the 21 (which are all now in the opening post as usual, by the way) but no more than two exact scores right.

The sole participant not to manage any was champion MVP RULZ, and him slipping down a place is the only movement at all. Pete succeeds in pulling himself two further points clear of the wooden spoon slot, while at the other end ultimo salvaged a respectable score despite posting late so that Stinky could only close the gap to four points.

Not going to mention every single match, but the 16 ties where the favourites won away from home were generally good for at least one-pointers, with a straighforward 3-0 for Lyon proving the most fruitful of all. The closest anybody got to guessing PSG would score nine unanswered goals were two 6-0 bets – I was the only one foolish enough to think the underdogs might actually get a consolation.

The other French match went to penalties, as did one of the ties in Ulster. Although there were a few predictions of draws dotted about, both of those ended up as duds. As mentioned, a lot of people were labouring under the impression that the Scottish women's domestic game has a lot more strength in depth than it does in reality. The only apparent shock from our huge selection was Alavés knocking out Betis in Spain... in the sense that nobody got it, even if they're in the same division at the moment. For those of us who can remember the home side taking Liverpool to extra time in a European final this century, however, it probably shouldn't even feel like much of a surprise anyhow.

As promised, no bonuses for a 'bumper' round but we'll be back to something approaching normality next week with just the standard set of 10, including a D2D and an eventual 'wildcard' fixture. That'll be up in the first post sharpish.

  18. Since the big Cup weekend is now getting underway, let's take a moment to remember the greatest Third Round tie of them all.

    FA Cup Third Round

    Gillingham 0-1 Sheffield United
    QPR 2-2 Bournemouth
Stoke City 0-0 Brighton & Hove Albion
    Middlesbrough 3-1 Aston Villa
    Peterborough United 1-2 Leeds United
    Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
    Wigan Athletic 2-3 Manchester United

    Irish Cup Round 5
    Crusaders 2-1 Ards
Harland & Wolff Welders 0-4 Larne (well, the Titanic did sink, after all)

    Scottish Women's Cup Round 3
    Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0-5 Rangers
    Ayr United 0-6 Celtic

    Spanish Cup Round of 32
    Lugo 1-3 Atlético Madrid
    Espanyol 3-2 Getafe
    Alavés 0-1 Real Betis
    Rácing Ferrol 0-2 Sevilla
    Eibar 1-0 Athletic Bilbao
    Málaga 1-2 Real Sociedad
    Tenerife 2-0 Las Palmas

    French Cup Round 9
    Lens 2-1 Monaco
    Pontarlier 0-3 Lyon
    Revel 1-5 Paris Saint-Germain

    Scottish League Two

    Forfar Athletic 4-5 East Fife

Thanks for going along with that scoreline for what was a last-minute addition to the card, albeit in the other direction from my guess. Sadly rather than a nine-goal thriller, it was instead one of a few stalemates this time out. At least with a quarter of the matches being from Scotland, all of our selections up there survived the weather. Unfortunately the southernmost fixture was called off, but as someone who now lives a 10-minute walk from the edge of mainland Wales, I can vouch for the Celtic fringe being especially windswept, cold and wet this time of year so perhaps I shouldn't have risked a Cornish game after all.

Anyway, the results went into the opening post last night and the table was updated right afterwards. As if to show the importance of the glut of domestic football in the festive season, Stinky – who looked like running away with the title a fortnight ago – has already relinquished the lead after a sub-par performance, but it still took a top-scorer performance from ultimo to topple him. In the middle of the standings, Tilde once more narrowly overtakes Vegeta, and while there's no further movement, Pete is again a point closer to last place than before.

The 'wildcard' fixtures were #6 and #11: the latter was at Anfield where everybody got the right result but not the 4-2 final score, which doesn't too much in terms of competition but it's nice for getting the average scoring haul up across the board. The former at Darlo was more of a mixed bag, with four participants getting it spot on to claim a pair of genuinely useful bonus points apiece.

Further afield, other notable results included: four home wins in the EPL on Saturday that were generally good for one-pointers, alongside a few more in Scottish League One and English League Two. Reverses for the Addicks, Rams and Cards caught a few people out, but the two Scots top-flight outcomes from yesterday largely proved fruiftul.

A new set of 21 will appear in the original post shortly, to make up for this past round having only 19 in the end. Sorry for lateness on this blurb. Then the rest of the month will be back to *relative* normality, I promise.

Let’s face it, January is a bit of a miserable month in truth. It’s fucking freezing, we’re all skint until payday rolls round, all the festive decorations go back in their boxes, and your bosses all of a sudden decide they want to smash the opening quarter and you go back to work ruing how you didn’t feel relaxed enough during your Xmas break.

But fear not, for apart from that rather gloomy initial outlook, there’s still a lot of good stuff to look forward to this month.

Good Arrows! - World Darts Championships (1st to 3rd)
    IMG_1696.thumb.jpeg.c01bbfe4011346152a1314d907e1ade5.jpeg

The first major sporting concludes in over the first three days as per tradition. It’s been a mixed tournament so far in terms of quality, but Luke Littler’s progression has been incredible to witness. Even a sub-par World Championships is still great to watch. Darts remains a fantastic spectacle capable of producing some wonderful sporting drama. I’ve never been live but I hope to save up some pennies and put that right for 2024. Good arrows indeed.

The Mike Castle Classic - The Traitors Season 2 (3rd onwards)
    IMG_1697.jpeg.6ef46ce23fe16f8da9401f108a4f1041.jpeg

I was very late to the party on the first series having only caught up with it over the last couple of weeks. What a boat to miss. The best kind of reality TV bollocks. It may disappoint as they over complicate the brilliant original, but it should still be jolly good fun. If not, well, we’ll just have to revive the Mafia Scum threads. Don’t pretend you don’t want to.

Snooker Loopy! - The Masters (7th to 14th)
    IMG_1695.jpeg.01a46e5ced5449efa7ba1c1c092c7bf5.jpeg

One of the ‘big three’ triple crown events on the snooker calendar, the top 16 battle it out over a glorious week at Ally Pally. I’ve got tickets for the Monday night session featuring serial Welsh shagger and potting magician Mark Williams this year. First time I’ll have been in person at a snooker event in a while - will be nice to be back on with the punters having covered it from the press room previously. Always a great tournament with a great standard of play and an electric atmosphere.

On the road to the big one - Royal Rumble (27th)
    IMG_1698.webp.de85d857aa7bc9e9ca9262565f822442.webp

My favourite WWE event of the year - always good fun and it means we’re properly on the road to the annual spectacular of Wrestlemania as the picture starts to become clearer. I genuinely think this year’s Rumble has the potential to be the best in a while with HHH being able to fully put his stamp on it (I think Vince/Shane had a big hand in it last year but I might be talking bollocks). So it’s just nice watching a lot of bodies clatter into each other and throw each other out of a ring isn’t it? It always makes for fun cameos as well. Could this be Bossman’s year?

Football crazy - FA Cup 3rd Round (4th to 8th of Jan plus replays tbc)
    IMG_1699.thumb.jpeg.5800670e80fd4c50ed0aacd897a7316b.jpeg

I know, another sporty one, and not everyone gives a toss about the FA Cup anymore. But I’m a hopeless football romantic and I love watching the bigger teams take on some of the underdogs. There aren’t many standout ties this year sadly in terms of non league teams getting a crack at Prem opposition, but Wigan might spring a surprise when they host Man United, Liverpool vs Arsenal is an interesting clash, and Sunderland meet bitter rivals Newcastle for the first time in a good while. Maidstone United, the lowest ranked team in the competition, host League One Stevenage.

This is obviously pretty much my January highlight every year aside from maybe the Bother's Bar Poll of the Year results night, since it's too cold and wet and miserable to want to take in any other form of entertainment or socialise, plus this time I'm skint anyway. Thank goodness a quarter of the ties are on free-to-air TV across 5 days now!

If I had a partner then I might enjoy St Dwynwen's Day more, or if I were north of the border Burns Night might be more fun. As it is it's just me and knockout footie: the same weekend you've got the equivalent rounds of the Coupe de France and Copa del Rey (the Portuguese counterpart is always done and dusted by the end of October, sadly), then later in the month there's the Fourth Round, the League Cup semis (last-ever two-legged ones this year *sniff*), last 32 of the Scottish men's and women's Cups plus the English women's one and even some midweek Coppa Italia action starting tonight. All there to keep me sane until things slowly begin to pick up again in February.

Mega Drive was for the cool kids whilst Nintendo was for babies. Fact.

Ah, that would explain why the much more streetwise/wayward kid in the year above me who lived diagonally opposite got an original Mega Drive first. Think he had a Game Gear too. On the other hand, a different mate who lived round the corner also had one years before I did and was spectacularly uncool (and went onto head up the Boundary Commission for Wales).

Then again, the former played Moonwalker a lot and the latter Columns so the relative coolness factor still checks out. Although it was via said second friend that I discovered how much better the football sims were on Sega.

A different pal again from the poor side of town owned a Master System (and yes, Alex Kidd being built in blew my mind too), but I'd been a hand-me-down Atari kid before migrating to the Amiga and then firmly planting my flag in the Nintendo camp with the NES.

Eventually my Dad got me a Mega Drive 2 dirt cheap at Argos with a discount voucher, but I only ever used it for a trio of Sonic games plus borrowing Toki off a girl in the year below for a couple of weeks. By the end of that generation I'd swivelled back to the SNES thanks to Donkey Kong Country 3, Yoshi's Island & Street Fighter Alpha 2, then mooched off of my stepbrother's PS1 until I got my own N64 for my 13th birthday and my MD was chucked away once I'd stopped playing it for a while, as were all my pre-GameCube systems. Never had a Saturn or Dreamcast but in truth like most gamers I probably didn't come to appreciate either until it was too late.

I then got another Mega Drive II about 15 years ago but it's rarely even been plugged in. I've built up a small collection of used titles, most of which I didn't already own originally in the 90s - the exception being Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which I must've purchased at least 10 times across various consoles by now.
