  1. This is from a while back, we went to Dollywood, in Tennessee, and ate at “Aunt Granny’s.” It’s an all you can eat country restaurant, you pick your mains and sides, and then they just keep them  coming.

We had the cabbage, corn pud, mash, and Mac n cheese, and the server got confused and brought the beans too. For mains we had the pot roast, the catfish, and the fried chicken. Easily the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. Practically had to roll to the car.

  2. Just found out the mince I was thawing was solid as a rock still, so I pushed tonight’s meatloaf, mash, and cabbage to tomorrow, and we headed out to banging southern chain Cook Out.

The gimmick is it’s like food at a bbq, I had a western-style (bbq sauce, bacon, onion) double burger tray, with a big drink, fried okra, and chips. My wife had a burger with fried onions and pickle, drink, onion rings; and chicken snack wrap. Glorious, greasy fast food, and cheap too.

  3. Sorry about that — the bacon was great, but I still prefer proper bacon, which is why I'd have country ham if they had the option there. The sausage was blinding, though.

A thing I've only noticed recently is that, along with the usual bottomless cup of coffee, they offer you a cup for the road, which was much appreciated this morning.image.thumb.jpeg.5361010d1212bed6adbae1419a3f393f.jpeg

  4. It’s just normal ham, as opposed to country ham. City ham is wet cured and needs to be refrigerated, country ham is dryer, saltier, and is shelf-stable.

moot point, they didn’t have any in, had bacon instead.

  5. Not to be a stereotypical southerner, but I got good numbers at the doctor this morning, so I’ve gone to the Waffle House for a two egg breakfast with extra city ham

But did you complete the peg game?

    Nah, it’s not possible*

  7. After a rotten week, decided to go out to eat at Cracker Barrel. Always a fun experience, I find. Has a big fireplace, but was too warm, so they just add a smoky scent to the air. Oil lamps at every table, country music playing.

We shared a basket of white cheddar bites, which were free due to loyalty points. I had the steak sampler, which was sirloin, biscuits, mashed spud, broccoli, and a half serving of country fried shrimp. Wife had buffalo chickenMac and cheese. I also got a $5 Mac and cheese with meatloaf to take home and have tomorrow. All that with change from $60 with a decent tip.

  8. @BomberPat I've been left with a mortal fear of all-hands meetings at short notice; my old company did it 4-5 times, and as a startup, they did all the fuck awful start up things: either only invited the people who were getting sacked, or invited only those who weren't being sacked; had IT close lock peoples' email accounts whilst they were in the meeting; deactivated key cards. The last two were just recorded video messages from the CEO.

Turned out okay for me in the end, we were purchased, and out of the high watermark staff of about 400, I was one of the 20 or so who were rolled into the new company.

We did get in a consultant at the old company, and honestly it was a fantastic experience, for me and some others at least. I thought he had some amazing ideas, and when they let him go and memory holed all of those ideas, he reached out to the rank-and-file to make sure we were all on his linkedin, and even got jobs for a couple of people when they were laid off. Great bloke.

I was watching an older episode of Would I Lie To You, and suspect she may have already turned up as a former Taskmaster contestant, but here's Maisie Adam.

I see that she's only 30, but she must be a clone, as I swear I got off with her at various different clubs in about 2000.

I went away over the weekend and my usual cat-sitter let me down, so I was made up when Jeremy Beadle sent me a photo of Bruce being okay with him in my absence.
