It was fantastic. I was actually really impressed by Axl’s voice and his energy through the whole show. Slash really does have the charisma of a Brussels sprout though.

I actually swapped the spare Gold Circle for a VIP Terrace ticket - great view and better facilities. The guy who swapped with me had friends in the GC but, by the time he went to buy his ticket, they’d sold out and only VIP was left. So we were both totally made up with the exchange.

I don’t think I’ll ever get a GA ticket for a show in Hyde Park. I had a free ticket (Gold Circle) for Pink the other week but watched Gwen Stefani from GA with a friend. The sound isn’t as good and the delay on the screens was bloody awful.

Now that Ticketmaster and the like do payment plans on a lot of tickets, I’d rather spread the cost of a more expensive ticket than have to do GA again.

We had bought Gold Circle having been warned by a mate about how poor GA was. Watched Pretenders from the merch queue and yeah, the sound and delay was awful.

The Gold Circle sound was excellent though. Would definitely go back again.

I really vividly remember an interview they did when they were recording St. Anger, how they were hyping it up as a return to form, and how they had listened to their audience and were making a gritty, heavy, and raw heavy metal album again, that it was going to be back to their roots and nothing like Load or Reload. It was an exercise in them second-guessing their audience, and I think that's all they've been doing ever since

With some proper editing and a decent production St Anger could be a very good album.

Kind of like a metal version of Be here Now.

Discussing Metallica like his makes me yearn for the good old days of Mr Seven on here kicking off about Death Magnetic.

I remember me and Egg saying how a bands album may be your favourite not because of the quality of music but because it takes you back to a point in your life that was joyous. It may have been the first album you heard by a band that grew to be a huge part of your life so it holds a special place in your heart.

    I think that's fair.

Your favourite band from your childhood (if they're still going) are unlikely to release an album the will be universally loved or seen as your favourite simply because none of us have the time to listen to it over and over, then to fall in love with it like we did back then.

    What does that mean?

Rather that being a reference to the bands themselves, who obviously all predate Instagram, I took it to mean that it’s an event for people that want to be seen at the show “getting content”, rather than wanting to see the show itself.

    Exactly this.

I know that makes me seem like some sort of "metal gatekeeper" but a quick glance at the previous Coachella crowds (like when GNR played a few years back) will prove my point.

Ah, aiming for that “More Money Than Sense” Cochella crowd eh?

    Pretty much,

We had a cursory glance at pricing it up and it's just not do-able on any sort of normal budget.

Metal for the Instagram generation sadly.

So what's the deal with Frankie Mooney then (it's him behind this UK Wrestling Council thing)?

He claims to be an entrepreneur, martial artist, author and hypnotist, which is every conman red flag imaginable before you even get to wrestling. I looked him up and what little coverage I could find is clearly bought and glorified press releases in local 'papers, and mentions of matches with, mostly, nobodies. A couple of people I'd heard of, but checked their Twitter and never saw a mention of him.

Anything I've been able to find is just that he's a nutter and a no-hoper, but is there anything more to it than that?

    He’s the former Kid Krazy.
Famous for setting the fire alarm off at an early ICW show I believe.
As well as having his head kicked in by Jim Korderas when he jumped into the ring at the end of a Brock/Big Show match in Aberdeen about 20 years ago.

    An absolute lunatic.
Basically he met Drew Macdonald once so everyone else doesn’t know how to work and he can shoot on you to prove it.

Musically, I've known they were shit since I first saw them on a music channel in 2006.

Politically, I've known they were shit since the lead singer got frustrated at the lack of crowd response during their Download 2009 set, so he started calling the audience all sorts of horrendous homophobic slurs.

Download 2009 was the first time I saw them and having read the buzz around them I felt very gatekeeper-y dismissing them as shite after a couple of songs.

Then the singer started mouthing off. Vindicated.

BCW in Ayrshire have confirmed that Kid Fite and Davey Blaze will be at shows going forward, obviously not mentioned on the poster or any social media. Apparently with Fite the girl was 17 and "deemed legal" (Fite admitted she was 16) and "has Ross done anything illegal and did it go to court"

    Absolute scum.

Well you know who the BCW promoter is and who his brother was so looking the other way is something that will come naturally to some people down there.

    Odds that he posted here?

There's quite a few people making an absolute show of themselves on Twitter today with takes about people who were friendly/civil towards that guy. All because when he said nice things to someone they would retweet it.

Guys who were Church-mouse quiet when the accusations of their mates misbehaving, you couldn't peep out of them. Now more than happy to chirp up when it’s a fan that's done something wrong.

It felt customary at Leeds to set fire to things on the Sunday night, really needless looking back on it. Whole blocks of portaloo's would go up. In 2002 the police actually came in to try and prevent it from happening and it got nasty. There are bits and pieces online about the ensuing riot but its largely been forgotten. Not many cameras around in those days.

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.leeds-live.co.uk/best-in-leeds/leeds-festivals-year-booze-fuelled-20354016.amp

It's weird how these articles always try to pin the Leeds 2002 riots on GNR, conveniently ignoring that the delay on Friday was because The Prodigy turned up with a headline-level stageset which took forever to be dismantled. (GNR were only doing Leeds, so Prodigy were Reading headliners on the Sunday).

There was a really nasty atmosphere on the Sunday which started with a massive bottle fight during Sum 41 I think it was and just escalated from there. Headliners the Foo Fighters were promoting the terrible One By One album and played a couple of really slow dirges from it and you could tell the crowd were bored, it was really cold and the security were just wading into the crowds putting out any bonfires that had been lit.

It was probably inevitable there would be trouble anyway but the combo of those things on the Sunday added to it.

the "Worst gig crowds" question always throws up some surprising answers.

Slayer? Limp Bizkit? No problem. Whereas I found Depeche Mode to be full of insufferable arseholes who are obsessive and wealthy enough to follow them around on tour, who balk when you start moving too much. Everybody protecting their little space around them. I can't do concerts like that.

Oasis at Hampden in 2005 was the worst crowd I've ever seen and the only time I've been in a fight at a gig (well, someone threw a punch at me - same thing).

There was no booze on sale inside the stadium so loads of pissed up neds got extra drunk before they got there and that lead to there being a nasty atmosphere almost all day. And it just kicked off as soon as the came onstage and the pushing started.

Horrible day. The Super Furries were excellent as a support though.

I went to see Status Quo a few years back when they were doing an acoustic tour, think it might have been the final tour they did before Rick Parfitt died.

We were sat towards the back so could see more or less the whole audience. An all seater show but that didn’t stop this pocket of people towards the front right of the stage wanting to get up after the first few minutes. One guy was having a great time and constantly turning round telling everyone to get up and gesticulating with his arms. That’s one thing but doing the same to the guy in a wheelchair and telling him to get up is a big no-no

The Quo have a terrible snobbish crowd that travel to all the gigs. As they're in the fan club they manage to buy up the front couple of rows almost all the time so are allowed to stand at the barrier. It's treated like a social club rather than a gig where they all just chat and mingle during the show, barely watching the band.

There is/was a guy that would go to all the Xmas tour gigs wearing a Santa hat that had his Quo Fan Forum username printed on it. "Crapmodem" it was. Just desperate to be noticed.

The couple of times @Bettencourtand I have managed to get to the front to stand you get lot's of tutting and dirty looks from them for daring to enjoy yourself and sing/dance along.

Went to see the Manics in Halifax last night. It was my first gig since January 2020. It was weird being around so many people again. I'm really fucking hoping that I haven't caught COVID.

    How were they?

We're seeing them in Edinburgh in a couple of weeks. Kind of wary of being in a packed crowd though.

  13. Did Matt Berry take any flak for the offending IT Crowd scene? I looked it up but couldn't see anything.

Thought that was a bit strange given that as a performer he must have thought it was a bit off.

But to all Scottish watchers, how has Christian Doidge looked for Hibs this season? The Wales team was turned around by Keiffer Moore who plays for Cardiff, and he's a similar 6ft 5 lump with good feet and Welsh qualified.

He's been decent, not as good as he was for them last season but he's been played as a supporting striker and outshone by Kevin Nisbet

He also has an inconvenient knack of needing 5 chances before he'll score one.

Nothing to add other than I was shown on camera during these.

Which for a 12 year old being on TV while at the wrestling made me feel like the coolest kid in the world.

I'm having flashbacks to Download 2009, sitting on the grass whilst Five Finger Death Punch were stinking up the joint. The lead singer, an absolute arsehole by all accounts and clearly pissed off at the lukewarm reception to his drab band, shouted down the mic before the last song, "Everyone who doesn't mosh to this is a fucking f****t". Yep, very welcoming.

Coincidentally, that was the same festival where a drugged-up Manson put on the worst set of all time. He was so off his tits that he spent five minutes asking the crowd if he should remove his jacket or keep it on before grumbling away through an uninspired collection of songs.

Yeah, he was atrocious that afternoon. The absolute worst gig I've ever seen, just a mess.

Well fuck him, we wont be seeing him anywhere near big festivals or gigs ever again.

Either Chris Jericho and The Undertaker are knowingly funding all of this, or they’re QAnon believing morons - which, frankly, isn’t impossible.

Pretty sure Daniel Bryan wont get wide with Jericho or Taker like he did with Styles though.

  18. Given that the music scene in Aberdeen (pre Covid obviously) was almost non-existent I'm delighted to see Cold Years getting some good press.

Seeing as Aberdeens most famous musical exports are still Annie Lennox and half of The Shamen it's about time someone else stood out. Hopefully they can keep it up
