CROWNING A CHAMPION

*********************

Tony Mamaluke vs. Jeremy Lopez

Meh. This isn't bad. I don't like Mamaluke much. Mainly because he looks skinnier than me. There's a couple of nice exchanges in this match, but on the whole, it's really a whole lot of nothing.

Prince Nana and Jacobs Ladder vs. York and Matthews

To this point, there isn't any purpose to either team. This remains intact here. Useless match that if you blink, you'll miss it.

Michael Shane and Biohazard vs. Paul London and Don Juan

Not the worst match. Some good stuff from Biohazard, which is nice since he got squashed last time out. The main goodness comes from the Shane/London exchanges though, as you'd expect. Don Juan is useless. A decent tag outing.

Da Hit Squad vs. Divine Storm

Here was me thinking Divine Storm would get a push. Noooo way. DHS destroy Divine Storm in a match which BARELY passes as an extended squash.

James Maritato vs. Jay Briscoe

This match ain't up to much. Jay Briscoe continues to look good in defeat though. I think the problem is that Maritato didn't get enough offense for someone who was going to win the match.

Natural Born Sinners vs. The Carnage Crew - Bunkhouse Brawl

Absolutely terrific fun from both teams, as they just belt each other about in a stiff fashion. You can feel the hatred from both teams. Lots of blood and violence, and fans of hardcore wrestling should like this. Best match on the show so far.

AJ Styles vs. David Young vs. Adam Jacobs

A spotfest. And not a very good one either. Styles broke out the Dragon Rana which was weird to see from him. Plenty of moves happening, but there was absolutely NO base to the match.

Tobin, Dunn and Marcos vs. Brian XL, Dixie and Black Gorman

FUCK OFF !!!

Xavier vs. Scoot Andrews

The last match getting clipped is acceptable, but this HAD to be bad to go down the priority list. The stuff they showed looked decent enough though.

ROH Title - Iron Man Match - Christopher Daniels vs. Spanky vs. Low Ki vs. Doug Williams

The best ROH match of 2002. An absolutely amazing match, and probably my favourite Iron Man Match as well. Doug Williams came out of this one looking fantastic. Low Ki and Daniels were the stars of the show, but I was disappointed at the under-use of Spanky. Look out for the terrific spot with the Dragon Clutch and the Chaos Theory. Worth a few rewinds. A genuine *****, the match of 2002 and one of my favourite matches of all time.

The undercard isn't shite, but it isn't very good either. The main event is worth anything you're willing to pay for it. It is REALLY that good.

ROH HONOR INVADES BOSTON

**************************

Low Ki actually cuts a rather good promo at the start of this tape about the Iron Man Match on the previous show. It's good to have a backstage promo of some worth.

The Amazing Red vs. Quiet Storm

This was essentially a bunch of moves taped together. The moves were fun though, and nothing was blown, so the match turned out to be entertaining as a result. However, nobody should be kicking out of the Canadian Destroyer. Especially in such a manner which makes the move mean nothing. I also hate commentators saying they don't know who the move hurts more. One guy lands on his head and the other on his arse. YOU do the math. This match didn't run too long and got the crowd into it. Job done.

Scramble Match - SAT and Chris Divine vs. Special K

Special K are Izzy, Dixie and Brian XL here. With Elax making special guest appearances. Mainly to do something really stupid. Like stomp someone with no power, leading to him getting killed by Chris Divine. Once again, the action is short and there's loads and loads of moves crammed into the time. This time though, the match is just out and out shit, and the first sign that something is really wrong with SAT. Almost every move here looks pretty dire, apart from a huge Powerbomb near the start of the match. Divine is also out of his depth in such matches. There is ONE cool moment with Izzy's dive though. Avoid this one like the plague.

Chris Divine challenges the champ, so ...

Low Ki vs. Chris Divine

... he gets slaughtered. Like, really, HEAVILY gets his ass kicked from Low Ki here. Nothing of note.

Dunn and Marcos vs. The Christopher Street Connection

The CSC are just stupid, and totally out of place in ROH. I'm not sure exactly why ROH would book this team. Their antics didn't get them over, and they weren't very good wrestlers. It does get the commentators to show off gay jokes though. This match is too short to be bad, but it's not very good.

Mike Tobin vs. Scoot Andrews

It's only fair that Andrews gets to demolish someone after what happened at Road To The Title. He gets the chance to kill a jobber here. This is the problem with having so many matches. Lots of stuff that is too short. This match, like the others, is too short to be worth anything.

Xavier comes out and challenges Scoot.

Xavier vs. Scoot Andrews

You know, you'd think with Xavier going onto big things, they'd end his first real fued with a good match. Instead, they cram the match into 5 minutes. In that five minutes, they don't even TRY and do anything different that we haven't seen in their other matches against each other. It's a poor showing. However, Xavier does pull out a rather mental Arabian Press which is worth checking out.

Michael Shane vs. Paul London

YES ! A match which gets some time ! Sick bump from London sees him fly off the top rope and through the railing. Ouch. Michael Shane is a grade A prick here, and looked so much better than he actually is. Infact, the entire London fued made him look decent. Probably because they know each other rather well. It goes along rather nicely untill the awesome ending and you just KNOW this isn't over.

There's also some awesome post match shenanigans involving Rudy Boy Gonzalez, Simply Luscious and some Sweet Shane Music. Fun.

American Dragon vs. Donovan Morgan

Why did these two guys get a 15 minute time limit ? Why did The Briscoes not get that ? Stupid booking aside, they fit the stuff into the match perfectly. Gotta wonder what happened to Morgan in ROH. He actually was pretty good before he just disappeared completely.

Boston Massacre Match - Da Hit Squad vs. The Carnage Crew

Jesus, this is violent. Not as good as the match from the last show, but this is good for people who like weapons brawls. All sorts of stiffness with chairs and cow bells and then barbed wire boards. There wasn't the same feeling of intensity that the match on the last show had, and maybe that's what made the match not as good.

Biohazard vs. Don Juan

Why can't I remember this match ? Oh, because it isn't actually very good. Well, again, like most of the card, it's too short to be worth anything. How Biohazard managed to look decent in 2 minutes is beyond me. That shows me that he might actually be worth something.

Alex Arion vs. Maverick Wild

As a showcase, this is actually pretty enjoyable, and I was left wanting to see more by the end of it. They did a LOT with the 5 minutes, and it wasn't just a little spotfest either. It had a nice flow to it, and I'd definately like to see a longer match involving the two guys. It's making me wonder where they were wrestling as regulars at this time.

Natural Born Sinners vs. Mamaluke and Maritato

Absolutely nothing wrong with the tag action here. Maritato and Mamaluke are quite brilliant at times, and I'm gutted that they never stayed as a team in ROH while Maritato was there. Boogaloo doesn't look too much worse than Homicide here actually. It's awesome to see the FBI wanting to take Homicide's knee home as a trophy. Mamaluke's offense in particular seemed to be pretty relentless.

Mark Briscoe vs. Jay Briscoe

I'm sure LL will love me for this ... I absolutely loved this match. I liked how Mark kept going after the blood of Jay with certain body parts, and Jay would then go after these body parts himself. It's also got the best DVD that Jay has done. My only problem is the overkill with some of the moves. The DVD looked like absolute death, and a Screwdriver should be good enough to end most matches. The fact that they both happened to the same guy is even worse. However, when not picking at these things, it only helps to heighten the drama in the final stretch, but I reckon the match could have done without it. Still, brilliant match.

ROH Heavyweight Championship - Low Ki © vs. AJ Styles

Wow. This was brutal. They had a hard act to follow and they did a hell of a job. The face of AJ Styles was bleeding by the end thanks to the Kawada Kicks of Low Ki. They just seemed to go all out and stiff the hell out of each other. There was a particularly amazing exchange where AJ Styles goes MENTAL with strikes but Low Ki counters a Rana with a HARD Powerbomb for a big nearfall. There's also some nice exchanging of moves and good counters, particularly from AJ. This is a good first title defence.

OVERALL

********

Okay, so there's a LOT of short stuff on here and there's also two particularly poor matches. However, the stuff that gets a decent amount of time is generally good, and a couple of the short matches are actually entertaining to watch.

October-December 2006 was the worst three month period ROH has had in a long time. Things picked up in February this year, thankfully

I agree 100%, it was.. maybe not abysmal, but there was little of interest going on. ROH message Board fool JSWO responded to this with, "yeah, I so wish it was 2002 again." Somewhat misses the point.

I liked Honor Reclaims Boston (after the October shows, it was nice to have some crowd heat) but The Bitter End not so much. On a different note... Is it really necessary to use personal insults towards established UKFFers, Mr 7 posts? Keep going with the reviews, and leave that out, please.

The Chicago Spectacular : Night One - 8/12/06

Tank Toland vs. Ebessan - a woeful sounding match-up on paper, and oddly enough it proves to be thus in the ring. Ebessan raises a few chuckles by ripping the piss out of Toland early on, but then we revert to a standard match, which does neither wrestler any favours. Maybe that

Jason Blade vs. Pelle Primeau - to paraphrase Ben Folds Five, which of these two do you care less about? The annoying little fart Primeau just shades it. A basic match, Blade wins with the moonsualt.
