Are you mad? You cant have that match without that! It's the whole story of the match, HBK coming back to life. HBKs kip-up was his superhuman trademark comeback piece that required that tiny bit of letting your mind escape reality which is totally what you often need to do to watch and enjoy wrestling. Like Undertakers rise from the dead, Hulks hulk up, Warriors taking to the Gods. It's like he gets a quick power-up, like Mario getting a super mushroom or Popeye getting his spinach. That was HBK, he was the ultimate resilient underdog full of flash and showing off, that's what he was ALL about. Take that out of the match? Utter fucking madness!

Yeah mate, good point lol. Good way to put it into context, i suppose Micheals' journey to that match and all the emotion around it comes into play too, and of course everyone and their mom's wanted to see that comeback at the end and for him to eventually win.

Great match, HHH played the evil, sadistic bastard sooo well to IMO.

The kip up is the whole point because the story of the match is "Is Michaels' back irretrievably fucked?" The whole time he's selling/on defense you don't know as a viewer if it's just that his back hurts because its been worked over during the match (meaning he might win or lose here, but will fight another day), or if his back hurts because he's got no business returning and this is the last you'll see of him. When he hits the kip-up, you know it's just "normal" match pain and that he can overcome that because he's a babyface.

Take that story and then throw in the fact that a lot of "smart" viewers were still questioning whether or not his back was actually in decent shape and you get a great effect.

I don't remember anybody thinking he was in danger at the time going into that match, they were more concerned whether he could still go or not. I remember the net having a bit of a meltdown when he clipped his foot on the top rope tope on the Raw before Summerslam leading to lots of "He's gonna be the shitz" type posts. Besides, he had a match in his TWA in 2000 so I don't think there were many thinking he was about to die on his ass.

One of my favourite Triple H matches is the TLC match for the Unified Tag Team Titles where he and long time friend Shawn Michaels teamed up once more as D-Generation X to face, then champions, JeriShow (Chris Jericho and Big Show) for the tag titles. Reason it's one of me faves is not because of the actual quality of the match as it wasn't that great but rather because at long last the original DX had won the tag titles together. Both The Game and HBK had held the titles with other partners and the DX group had held the tag team titles courtasey of the New Age Outlaws but never had Triple H and Shawn held them together. That was until the 13th December 2009 at the TLC pay-per-view.

And here we have it.

JeriShow-vs-DX-TLC-2009-poster-wwe-17292253-500-700.jpg

DX make their way to the ring to usual crowd cheering, aided even more that we are in the home of Shawn Michaels himself - San Antonio, Texas. The DX army is treated to seeing their heroes in all their DX merchandise, including the glowsticks which are constantly thrown into the crowd during the entrance before the firework display during the traditional crotch chop.

And here come the tag team champs

jerishow.jpg

(but without the belts as they're already hanging above the ring.)

DX get the better of the early going with Triple H going after the world's largest athlete and HBK taking care of Y2J. Show and Hunter take the fight outside the ring where Show gets the upper hand on the thirteen time world champ by throwing him back first into the security barrier, while Shawn and Jericho continue to trade blows inside the squared circle.

Triple H gains the upper on Show by throwing him over the barrier. He then goes to find a table and sets it close by the announcers table. Show and Triple H then take the action up towards the entrance as HBK clears Jericho out of the ring. But Y2J blocks a shot to the ringpost and instead hits Michaels' head into the ringpost and finds a table of his own. A flying forearm and kip up from HBK back inside the ring only results in an attempted, but failed, Walls of Jericho. Triple H and Big Show still brawling on the top of the ramp.

Shawn misses his flying elbow which leads Jericho to make his way up towards Show and Hunter. He goes to hit Trips with a steel chair but is caught with a kick to midsection instead. Then the Pedigree is countered and JeriShow begin to double team Triple H. That was until HBK came from behind the curtain with a steel chair of his own and he and Jericho trade chair shots.

DX_vs_Jerishow_TLC1.jpg

Michaels gets the better of the chair shots and attempts to take out both of the tag team champions but Show catches him with a headbutt. And suddenly JeriShow are looking set to retain their titles as Big Show passes Jericho a ladder into the ring. But hang on, here comes DX to save the day.

Shawn's under the ring looking for something while Triple H hits Jericho in the chest with the ladder. A bit more abuse to Jericho with the ladder including double suplexing the ladder onto Y2J's back. Then a baseball slide with the ladder to Big Show to take him out again.

DX are now positioning the ladder and we're told all about how Shawn's experience in ladder matches is making sure it's positioned in the right place. Of course somebody who hasn't wrestled in this type of match before wouldn't know to position the ladder under the titles. (just to point out, to this point that only Y2J had competed in an actual Tables Ladders and Chairs match before) Shawn climbs the perfectly positioned ladder but Big Show prevents DX becoming tag team champs. He then begins to go on a rampage on Triple H while Jericho brings another ladder into play and smashes Shawn's face into it.

With HBK outside the ring, JeriShow double team Triple H again. A bulldog from Jericho onto the ladder is followed by Triple H being Irish whipped into the ladder then body slammed into it which results in his right leg being placed between the rungs by Big Show. While Trips is hanging upside down, HBK is thrown into the ladder and does his tossling upside down trick that he does in the turnbuckle only this time on Triple H and the ladder. JeriShow now have a sense of real confidence about them as Jericho begins to wind the crowd up.

The tag team champs attempt to again throw Triple H into the ladder but this time he counters and instead it's Jericho who hits the ladder face first and goes spiraling out to the floor. A knee to the face followed by a ladder to the face is what's install for Big Show before Triple H throws the ladder over the top rope and right on Jericho's head.

As Hunter turns round though, he walks straight into a choke slam. Hang on though, it's reversed into a DDT and HBK is back up on the top rope. Diving elbow and he hits Show right in the heart. And now it's time to tune up the band. But Jericho rushes into the ring and puts off Shawn. He misses the superkick and instead gets a codebreaker for his troubles. But a huge spine buster from Triple H is what awaits Y2J before Big Show hits a huge spear on the Cerebral Assassin.

Big Show's alone in the ring, looking up at the titles. He can't climb the ladder can he? Well he's gonna fucking try if nothing else. One rung, two rungs, three rungs, he's there. Phew, Triple H is back to save the match with a chair shot to Big Show's back but that only seems to piss the giant off. (well it would do wouldn't it?) Pissed him off so much that he just punched the chair right against Triple H's head. Knock out (not quite as it happened)!!!

He tries again to climb the ladder but this time Shawn thwarts his progress. Only slightly mind as the Showstopper is pushed away with ease. But then both members of DX get to the ladder and this happens...

tlcj.jpg

PEDIGREE TO BIG SHOW (with Shawn pushing down on his back for extra force)

Climb the ladder Shawn, climb it!!!

Yes, he's got the titles. No, fuck off Jericho. Jericho gets there just in time and pushes the ladder. Shawn flies threw the air and lands on Big Show outside the ring. Now Jericho is climbing the ladder. Make the save Hunter, make the save Shawn, make the save anyone.

Jericho has his hands on the titles but Hunter, thankfully, makes the save. He then climbs the ladder, the same side as Y2J but is knocked off again. Jericho once more has his hands on the gold but Hunter once more makes the save. This time powerbombing Jericho off the ladder. (actually looked quite nasty)

Triple H climbs the ladder, the crowd going crazy but Big Show gets there to keep the match alive. Chokeslam off the ladder. That's gotta be it...but Big Show is taking a breather before destroying the ladder. Erm...wise move Show.

Now he's working over Trips' stomach with some hard right punches. Jericho finds another ladder in the process Shawn is back in the ring. Probably wished he wasn't though because he and his best mate are about to be squashed between the legs of the ladder.

dx%20vs%20jerishow%20tlc%202009.jpg

Big Show destroys a second ladder by pulling the two legs apart.

"We want tables" coming from the fans.

A chokeslam for Shawn, onto Triple H, through the ladder that Trips himself set up by the announcers table earlier on. Big Show answering the fans call. Jericho meanwhile is trying to work out a way to climb up one leg of the ladder. Ain't gonna work Chris, trust me. Need to think of something else if you want your titles.

Oh shit I weren't expecting him to use Big Show as a ladder.

20091213_dx_Jerishow.jpg

Where's DX?????????????

Luckily Jericho can't free one of his own hands in time to get the titles. He was holding onto Big Show giant mitts to balance and by the time he was free, DX were back. Sweet Chin Music to Big Show which results in him dropping Jericho. I think he was meant to go through the table but instead he sort of stumbled onto the top rope and twats the table face first - looked nasty. A second Sweet Chin Music and a shot with the ladder sends Big Show over the top rope.

But there's no ladders for DX to climb.

One half of the broken ladder gets thrown in the ring and Triple H holds it while HBK climbs and yes, yes, yes, we finally get to see DX as tag team champions. Let the celebrations begin.

DX_vs_Jerishow_TLC3.jpg

Like I said at the start, this wasn't the greatest match in terms of quality for any of these four but to finally see Triple H and Shawn Michaels as tag team champions TOGETHER then I put it up there as one my favourite Triple H matches.

And now for Miserable Bret Hart rating;

For quality I'd give it 5/10

But for enjoyment of the result, I'd give it 9/10

Thanks for the review Jackpot! Any chance you could sort out your first two pictures? I'm just getting blue question marks instead of images at the moment...

Also, you need to rate the match out of 10 using the Miserable Bret Hart image in my opening post! (just click Quote on it to get the URL)

First pic is showing up fine for me mate but the second one wasn't, so I've swapped that. Not sure why they aren't all showing up for everyone to be honest.

And no worries I'll do the miserable Hitman pics now.

Dammit, that Taboo Tuesday match would have been mine!

Looking at the time of your post you only missed out by a few minutes. Pure luck because it was 7 AM here when I posted that (which would have been your evening, right?) and I'm not normally on here at that time. What are the chances of that? So glad I posted that when I did. Feel free to add whatever you were going to say about it when I get round to writing it.

Didn't realise we're getting right into this right away. I'll start working on mine around the middle of the week - next weekend

Same here.

One of my favourite Triple H matches is, oddly, the DX/Legacy match at Summerslam 2010. I know everyone felt their re-match was better, but I just loved this one - felt like a classic main-event tag war. If I can find the time, I might review it.

Still haven't seen that one (was at a festival the weekend of SummerSlam that year) but I've read you talking about that before. Don't want to watch it on it's own because I have the Bluray which I'll get round to seeing some day, I remember Triple H having a really good singles match with DiBiase where he gave him a lot during that period as well.

A little-remembered classic...

Triple H vs Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch - Raw, September 17, 2007

We're joining this one in progress, because the silly sausage who put it on Youtube only taped it after a break. There was an advert for Unforgiven encore showings, focusing on Undertaker's return. Also on that event, Triple H had beaten Carlito in a match where he could be disqualified but Carlito couldn't. I can't remember that feud at all, and Wikipedia's entry for Unforgiven can't be bothered even mentioning it in the build-up section so it can't have been important. The Game was probably slumming it in the midcard to help build future stars like these two.

dzxctu.jpg

That picture's from a different Unforgiven a million years earlier. Cade has got short hair by this time. Anyway, so this is the night after Unforgiven and we're back from the break where, breaking from WWE tradition, the heel hasn't got the babyface in a rest hold. Only messing, course he fucking has. Murdoch's applying a headlock, which gives a fine view of some trunks I can't remember. Them two big viking skull things that were Triple H's logo for a while shouting at each other on the arse.

z3f50.jpg

Helmsley, as Richie Freebird calls him, sells masterfully for ages, working the crowd two seconds before punching Murdoch's fat belly. Trev fires back with a crushing club across the back and grabs Hunter's head as though he's going to shove it into a Christmas dinner. He doesn't, though, he just tags Lance Cade.

They fire the current COO off the ropes and are going to deliver a double clothesline that would kill him. He's been watching his tapes though, and ducks before hitting the opposite ropes and double-clotheslining them.

34t7cc4.jpg

He dumps them both out of the ring then. He's that damn good, he's making light work of the tag team champions as the crowd goes wild.

The commentators are talking about Hunter being in this handicap match because he CROSSED THE BOSS, which must be Vince at this point? This was around the time of the Vince's son storyline, which Triple H was involved in. Anyway, Carlito's strolling out now, miffed about losing at the pay-per-view, and there's a diva search logo on the screen telling you to go to WWE.com to find out who survived. Who won that one? Eve?

5ognc4.jpg

The distraction makes Lance Cade think he's got the upper hand, but he's an idiot. Hunter punches him in the face more than one time and Irish whips him. Cade reverses that and, in a genuinely unusual move to follow up an Irish whip, just gives the returning Triple H a standard boot to the midsection. Then floors him with a running neckbreaker. If this was any other wrestler, they'd be down for the count, as long as it was the mid eighties. But not Triple H. He's kicked out before the referee's really even struck for two.

Cade's not happy with that, but to keep the advantage, he tags his fat mate back in, and picks him up like he's going to atomic drop him but isntead just drops his arse across HHH. Like this:

dvoniq.jpg

That one does get a near-fall. As Murdoch dominates, the commentators tell me that it was Mr McMahon who Triple H has upset and that The Game is undefeated since his return at SummerSlam. Trevor's on the second turnbuckle now, and I'm expecting him to do a double axe-handle but he only fucking flips over him and does a blockbuster thing! Another two-count for the rookies.

The crowd are chanting "Carli-To-sucks" and it sounds awkward. They're trying to squeeze four syllables into three, the bleeders. Cade's back in and drops a painkiller-assisted elbow as the fans start rallying behind Trips. That doesn't stop our Garrison Lance though. He does a face grab and a whip into the turnbuckles, only to run into a big boot. He cuts off the comeback with a smart flying kick, mind, and makes the quick tag. The man with the sideburns goes up top and makes that classic wrestling mistake of doing an aerial move that ends in you just landing on your feet right in the path of your downed opponent's boot what he's stuck in the air.

287j3sx.jpg

With both men down, this crowd is fervently cheering for Triple H to get back in it. He's up as Murdoch tags Cade back in and hits the TRIPLE H MEGA SEQUENCE. Jumping knee, boom! Irish whip, let him reverse it every time because you know he's gonna go for the backdrop and you can do the knee facebuster thing, boom! Spinebuster, bo--oh wait, he just clotheslined him instead. Murdoch runs in, gets a clothesline as well. But the two-on-one gets the better of him, and Cade grabs HHH as Murdoch comes off the ropes. The Cerebral Assassin ducks though, and Murdoch hits his own partner! Murdoch gets thrown out the ring again. Carlito's got a right sour face on over all this at ringside. And THERE'S the fucking Spinebuster on Cade! He goes for the cover.

JR (telegraphing the ending): "That should do it!"

One... Two... You know where this is going, don't you? Yep, it's a three! Who says Triple H never won a match with anything besides the Pedigree? He beat the fucking tag champs without it here! The music doesn't even get to "and how you play it" before Murdoch and Carlito are in punching and kicking fuck out of Trips though.

23sj0wz.jpg

Cade's up as well to put the boots in. Hunter's done for, it's three on one. Shawn Michaels is still out recovering from injuries and growing stubble, so he's not going to be any help. Is there anyone in the back who fancies politicking their way to the top by helping the heir apparent?

2djotqs.jpg

It's Kendrick and London! London's got a beard unlike this picture, but they're belting it down to the ring just the same. The pace they're going at, they're due a good reward here. They chase the tag champs away. Carlito watches this from the ring, furious. Then he looks on the screen and sees what's behind him. What a sickener.

abejd.jpg

hrho3q.jpg

He eats a beast of a spinebuster and rolls out of the ring, surely crippled.Hang on? He didn't get a Pedigree either? It's weird that there hasn't even been one. Anyway, nevermind that. The little cruiserweight boys get in the ring to celebrate with their new mate. They do their cute backflip pose thing and then offer Triple H handshakes. Despite a look on his face of "who the fuck are these jokers?" he smiles and shakes their hands. The end. Nearly.

QCaIdYG.gif

The next day, the internet exploded. With joy, because this was September 2007 and WWE was a year away from being ruined by going PG and debuting John Cena and Hornswoggle. At this point, everything in wrestling was still brilliant and perfect. Triple H giving five young talents the chance to rub shoulders with him was just another example of his selfless manificence. Shortly after this, injuries at the top of the card resulted in Hunter being added back to the WWE title mix and the planned HHH vs London and Kendrick storyline had to be dropped. But he definitely would've put 'em over like rover.

Er... Thanks for that, Pitcos?

EDIT: Just spotted it got 10/10 Miserable Brets, too! Marvellous!

Is there a deadline to get them in as I am going to struggle for time but if there's no rush I would still like to do it. If its needed sooner feel free to pass it on to someone else but please let me know. Thanks.

No deadline, so long as you don't forget about it.

I chortled at PITCOS' post, because I sneakingly enjoy that sort of match. There was a 5 minutes one time on Raw when I thought Murdoch might have a future, but even TNA don't want him. And Cade is dead, right? So that's probably their best match.
