Sony were going to release a movie called The Interview where Seth Rogan and James Franco play these guys going to interview Kim Jong-Un and wind up being recruited by the CIA to assassinate him. Some (apparently North Korean) hackers hacked Sony and released a bunch of stuff, including a producer calling Angelina Jolie a "marginally talented spoiled brat." Â The hackers then made some vague physical threats to cinemas that screened the movie. This led to Sony pulling the movie. Â And here we are. Â Now, I'm not a big Seth Rogan or James Franco fan, but I couldn't believe that the studio actually caved in and pulled the thing. Seems decidedly un-American to me. They also said it wouldn't release on any platform but have backtracked on that after Obama made a statement saying they shouldn't have pulled it, saying they hope to release it on a different platform. Â Not only that, but you got some people in US political circles called the hack attack an act of war and Obama saying that there will be a response. Â Whaddya think? A horrible attack on freedom of expression or who gives a shit? Â North Korea is the most unintentionally entertaining country in the world sometimes. Â Apart from that, I can't really blame Sony. Lil Kim is a fucking nutter. If he sets his mind to something, it will happen. They probrably added up the damage that could be done if attacks were made on Cinemas and the bad PR they would receive after getting the warnings and doing nothing about it. Â But I think pulling the movie is not only a pussy move on Sony and the theatre's part but sets a scary and worrying precedent. There's no point harping on about freedom of speech all the time and then backing down the second it's threatened. On top of that, I think it's highly unlikely that something would actually happen if the movie was released. If anything, Sony should release it for free on the internet as a fuck you to North Korea. I mean, it'd go against all their freedom of speech and expression ideals and they'd look like complete pricks. I'm sure you'd get the right-wing going nuts on Fox News, but the government themselves wouldn't be hacking anyone or threatening attacks on cinemas.
