Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted October 24, 2014 Awards Moderator Share Posted October 24, 2014 I've searched but it's really hard to find a thread with a two-letter search string. I haven't bought a TV in 7 years and the old one is starting to creak a bit. The technology moves on fast in this field, so what should I look for now? LED? 4K? Panasonic? I hear a lot of people raving about Samsungs lately, is this all hot air? I'm looking around 40", probably 42" at the most. Not fussed about a Smart TV because a Chromecast takes care of all of that. Definitely don't want 3D, because I'm not a child. I'll spend up to £500 but I see sets at half that price that appear to do everything I want but I can't distinguish one from the next. How to choose? To avoid this being a completely selfish thread, boast about your amazing TV setups.
Paid Members SpursRiot2012 Posted October 24, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 24, 2014 I have this: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2132512.htm?CMPID=GS001&_$ja=cgid:12488203250|tsid:59158|cid:200217410|lid:95296114490|nw:g|crid:42772540490|rnd:10175404367532840520|dvc:c|adp:1o1|bku:1 It's built in Freeview and a Smart TV, features I make no use of because I have BT TV and broadband. So really this was just an excuse to post about how massive this damn thing is.
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted October 24, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 24, 2014 I dunno if it's bullshit but when I bought mine the staff member said to look out for the processing rate. You'll get two 42" LCD TV's that both claim to be Full HD but the cheap one will have 100MHz process rate and the more expensive one 400Hz or more. If you want to watch fast moving stuff in HD (like football) the higher the Hz the better apparently. I bought a plasma so it was irrelevent. Refused
I'd keep your eye on John Lewis, they often have some decent deals on their website and their TVs comes with a 5 year guarantee. 4K is nonsense right now, especially for the size of screen you're looking for so I'd rule that out. Flangedango
Costco usually have good deals on tvs and you don't need a card to buy online. I currently have a £180 32 inch Goodmans (with a built in dvd player) bought from Asda Direct last year. I don't need a big fancy tv because I have a large willy. Paid Members JNLister Posted October 24, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 24, 2014 I've got a Panasonic plasma I bought in early 2006 with my first load of money from the ECW book (you said to brag). Nearly nine years later, it's still going strong, superb picture, not a hint of a problem. Which is great and all, but as I simply can't bring myself to replace a perfectly good TV and it's too big to relegate to a bedroom, I'm starting to realise I'll be the last person in the country to get HD or use an HDMI plug. For what it's worth, the picture is so good that several people who've visited (and have their own HD sets) have been genuinely surprised to find out it's not an HD set. Before that I rented (yes, rented) a Panasonic CRT which was pretty great, so while this isn't exactly up to date advice, two Panasonic sets have lasted me more than 15 years without problems. I've got £170 32" smart TV from Sainsbury's. Saying that, I very rarely watch TV.
Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted October 24, 2014 Author Awards Moderator Share Posted October 24, 2014 I just went to John Lewis in my lunch break and YE GODS the Panasonic 4K sets are jaw-dropping. I know they're running a proper demo reel but they really do look the business.
Paid Members JNLister Posted October 24, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 24, 2014 On the other hand, whatever Sainsbury's are using as a feed is so bad, I'd assume it was a single analogue aerial split between all the sets if it wasn't all digital these days. That said, the worst demo I saw was in Tescos where they had a split screen allegedly showing the benefits of HD. The side that was meant to be HD was so bad it looked like they'd simply smeared Vaseline over it.
hallicks
Don't get sucked in by the 100Hz/400Hz however many extra frames/second they want to give you thing. It can be ok for gaming but makes TV look bad and films look terrible.

WyattSheepMask
Had an LG for about 5 years now and never had an issue with it. It's only 32" though, so I'm thinking of maybe getting some a little bigger and moving it upstairs
Paid Members nfc90210 Posted October 24, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 24, 2014 I was in Currys PC World the other week and saw the SAMSUNG UE65HU8500 Smart 3D 4k Ultra HD 65" Curved LED TV in action. It was stunning. There is no other word. It blew me away. Alas, I can't afford it. When I heard about 3D TV I was expecting to be blown away by it, but the first time I saw a working 3D TV I was underwhelmed. After that I never felt like I needed had to have a 3D TV. I didn't have any expectations of Ultra HD but, damn, seeing it in person on this Samsung set was game changing. It's the next big thing. http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/televisions/large-screen-tvs-32-and-over/samsung-ue65hu8500-smart-3d-4k-ultra-hd-65-curved-led-tv-22083986-pdt.html?srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~~~Exact&mctag=gg_goog_7904&s_kwcid=AL!3391!3!43562508575!!!g!67784454575!&ef_id=VEfsDgAABD3vZt6h:20141024182937:s
Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted October 24, 2014 Author Awards Moderator Share Posted October 24, 2014 Samsung 39 incher that was £289 (I think it's discontinued, but the 40 inch lives on at around 300 sovs). Smart TV (totally unused due to Apple TV and consoles), 1080P, 100hz, 3 HDMIs. Dead happy with it as it replaced a nice old LG 37inch that was a heavy old beast. I could carry the Samsung with one hand! Like this one Johnbalaya? http://www.argos.co.uk/m/static/Product/partNumber/2472454.htm
