In Kendal it was "meet you at the Birdcage". But I don't think we have any Kendal posters other than myself on here now.

I've always meant to ask you, KMC, do you know a lad called Rob Grindey? He's from your neck of the woods and reckons everyone knows everyone. Nice lad. Big head.

Facebook draws a blank, although the name rings a bell. You sure you don't mean Ryan Grundy?
Frankie Crisp
No, defo Rob. For some reason, his name on Facebook is Rob Gee. No idea where in the world he is now as I think he's been travelling for the best part of five years.
kendal mint cake
Going to have to chalk that one up as a loss I reckon.

Computer help.

I've just been given my mum's old e-system laptop to use as a spare (and to make use of the disc-drive as I primarily use a net-book). It's seen better days and I need to do a "factory reset" or whatever it is called for a computer. Basically, she's never made a recovery disc so how do I go about getting it back to how it would be if you did a 'factory reset' on a phone, if at all possible.

A massive thanks if anybody can help me here.

KMC, does that guy still have a wargaming stall on Kendal Market? He used to sell D&D stuff and WH40k bits.
Bono the Creationist
This has probably been asked over and over again but is Spotify premium worth paying £9.99 a month for?
Steve Justice
Can anyone recommend some kind of remote control holder for this lot?

My wife keeps hiding them because apparently it makes the place look untidy (despite all her stuff being down the side of her armchair, but apparently that's OK because it's hidden). Just need somewhere to keep it all neatly so I don't feel like I'm involved in a really shit alternative easter egg hunt whenever I want to cotch in front of the TV.

EDIT:- There is actually another remote missing from that lot. My PS3 Blu-Ray remote.

He's a fairly good mate of my dads! "leady guy" we used to call him. His daughter Angelina was in my year at school. Not seen him for YEARS, maybe a decade. You know him?

Used to have a chat with him when I visited Kendal, and by sheer coincidence, he had a stall next to mine at a wargame show in Manchester a few years back. Not been to kendal for a few years, but him, the donut shop and a fantastic curry are happy memories.

Are you into a warhammer? a guy comes into my work claiming he has a warhammer player so good that no one in manchester will play him...
Thunderplex
Many moons ago. My gaming club was part of the playtest team, and I am in the thankyou's in the 1st edition.

Not played competitions for about 15 years, but I can't imagine that everyone in Manchester fears this guy.

Fuck me, it's not chess, it's got a huge random element in it. If you have a well balanced army and a good idea of how to get the best of it, you can have a good chance of winning, but its sitll a bit of a coin toss.
Richie Freebird
Has anyone ever legally changed their name to something daft? How much did it cost and how much hassle did it cause?
bAzTNM#1 Fan
A friend of mine changed his to Baron Cabbagehead.

It had been his name on Facebook for a while, and within days of changing it, Facebook suspended his profile for not using his real name. One scanned document emailed to them later, and he was back.

Basic cost is £33, althouth there's "optional extras".

Are you thinking of becoming Richie Freebird for real? It is a pretty cool name, you must admit.

That’s odd. There are people on mine with all manner of ridiculous and obviously not real names.

Yeah, I’ve spoken about it for years. If it doesn’t cause excessive amounts of hassle in life and only costs that much then I might as well do it before I die.
Dead Mike
You should absolutely get your name changed to Richie Freebird. I'm surprised more people actually don't do it given how cheap it seems? Maybe you should do a poll on here & let the UKFF pick your new moniker? I'm sure Neil would hook you up for it.

I'm about ready to change my surname (as my mum's now divorced the person whose surname I have used since the age of four). I was going to play it safe and go back to my birth-name but Richie Freebird is a cool as fuck name; I might have to follow his lead and come up with something better than my generic surname.

Haha, perhaps.

There have been some cool wrestling names over the years. Morales and Flair, for instance.

Giant would make a cracking surname, providing you also take on the middle name of The. No matter what your first name is, you'll sound mega.

Unless your name is Gary.

I found it! It was in my old work bag under the bed. Thing was, it has slipped in between the wooden stepladder under there, so it wasn't until I lifted the mattress to stare through the slats from the top down that I finally saw it. Have you checked there Wretch?

While the song is over rated and not nearly as good as the hype makes out there is something that sounds right about "Mr Freebird" as a name.

Y'know, I've just checked there and found nothing. I've turned the house on its arse and still haven't found it. I'm supposed to be going home in June. Where the fuck could it have disappeared to? Off to the Irish embassy I go then.

What decent eateries are there around Deansgate in Manchester that wont break the bank balance.

Im going to Manchester next Saturday because the ex has got us a ticket for something there for me birthday. I wanted to make a afternoon/ evening of it, so where is good but cheap for eats?

Is there a way to make downloading torrents less traceable by "the man"? I've just moved in with my bird and she's paranoid that we'll get our internet cut off or something if I'm caught downloading so I want to give her a bit of peace of mind.

Telling her to shut the fuck up isn't an option.

I use a Mac if that makes a difference.

I'd try Spinningfields, it's just off Deansgate and has loads of eateries. There is a Japanese restaurant there which is lovely and really cheap.

Download a program called peerblock. Enable http though because otherwise it will block some websites.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you are on Utorrent (which you should be) then you can go into Preferences > BitTorrent > and ensure 'Protocol Encryption' is set to enabled for peace of mind but to be honest i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Are there any decent torrent/filesharing sites for DVD extras? There's rips of nearly every film ever made online, but the bonus features are nowhere to be seen.

Thought I'd pop this here instead of starting a thread, hopefully someone will have some advice.

I'm about to apply for my Ma in Film Studies for September, need to get it in by Easter realistically. I've been out of education and working in shitty management jobs for years (9, to be exact). Obviously a writing sample is required for the application, and I've got relatively little of my old uni writing left- and what I have got, although it got decent marks, I'm not tremendously happy with. Plus they're going to want something more recent.

Not sure what my question here is really, just that after so long I'm finding the prospect daunting. Obviously whatever I produce will be film-related, but how closely does it need to relate to what I'm going to be studying? Or is it only for the purpose of demonstrating that I can write articulately and form an argument? Also, on the application form, it says that the writing sample should preferably be marked. Obviously mine won't be. Does that place me at a significant disadvantage?

Any and all advice will be appreciated, so if any of you have gone through this process in your thirties and can offer any pearls of wisdom, please do!

Yeah, there's a couple that are still there I think. I hope so, as I need two academic references too.

Ok, this really is a long shot, and indeed a long story.

In March last year, I was in Melbourne. I was in a clothes shop and I heard an absolutely brilliant song. It was in French and sounded like it was late 60's, or possibly a modern song with a 60's feel, had a repetitive baseline and a horn motif at the end of every line, just a two note one. The radio station didn't say the name of it, then again it was probably a CD so I thought I'd never know the song but it has been in my head since.

Last week, I was watching the last episode of the brilliant "Jonathan Meades On France" and to my surprise and delight, they used a clip, no more than ten seconds, of the very song. So I guess my question is, is there an online resource that lists soundtracks or clips of songs used on BBC or any TV show? Just so I can find out the name of this song and get it.

Cheers.
Burchill's Buddy
All the episodes appear to be on YouTube, if there were no other sounds or talking for a few seconds while the song was playing I'd suggest getting the Shazam app for your phone and using that. It's free and should be able to identify the song. It's got me out of some very frustrating "what the fuck is that song?" moments.
Keith Houchen
Yeah I thought of that but it is used with narration going on, would that matter? Cheers anyway.
