I had the chance to watch House Of Wax (2005) last night and it was pretty enjoyable. The film may be rather conventional in some respects, but there are quite a few effective, atmospheric scenes and gruesome moments. The performances by Elisha Cuthbert and Chad Michael Murray are good, but Paris Hilton's acting is absolutely awful. Due to her monotonous voice and seemingly half-arsed performance, she simply isn't convincing.

There's no way that I could leave my thoughts on this movie without saying it; Elisha Cuthbert is extremely hot! devil.gif inlove.gif

Went to Silent Hill today. Terrible, with some of the worst acting you will ever see. Between this and Hostel, 2006 isn't being kind to horror.

I recently watched 'The Devil's Rejects'.
Really liked it, it's alot better than 'House Of 1000 Corpses', alot darker and more disturbing.
And I think I'm in love with Sheri Moon-Zombie.

I know what you mean mate, i was loving it when she gets her ass out and goes "go on, shoot me in the ass" inlove.gif

Also i was cracking up when Captain Spalding's other half was feeling horny and he goes "Jesus Christ woman i need a piss" or something to that effect.

Who's acting is bad in the film? From the clips I have seen Radha Mitchell seems to do fine, Sean Bean is not meant to be in it long (but his acting seemed fine from the scenes I have seen), I would assume the monsters don't speak so their acting ability shouldn't matter. I am guessing that it is their daughter's acting which is poor then?
Mr. Seven
Radha Mitchell is terrible in this, and I thought she was very good in Pitch Black and Man On Fire. Laurie Holden (who plays a cop) is just woeful, and Sean Bean (who is normally very solid) is fairly poor, and his accent seems to change in every scene. I swear he had an Irish accent going on in one scene, then back to English/American.

The dialogue really doesn't help the cast, as so much of it is unnaturalistic, but there are times when the acting is so wooden you cringe. A lot of the cinema audience were pissing themselves laughing during the film, and while a good bit of it was assholes trying to be cool or whatever, there is a lot of unintentional humour to be found throughout.
BionicRedneck
I didn't really see a huge problem with the acting personally. Nowt special, but nothing embarrassing.

Bean's accent was a bit iffy, but the rest just seemed to be doing the typical horror movie acting.

Brotherhood of the Wolf
A very good film, with an interesting & intriguing story, an interesting look and atmosphere, and some good plot twists. The film is also bloody and violent at times, with some very entertaining fight scenes. The CGI effects used for the beast are poor though (the beast looks like it is out of a made-for-TV creature movie), and the film is slow paced at times, but on the whole the movie is very entertaining.

The Crow, The Crow (2) - City of Angels, The Crow (3) - Salvation, The Crow (4) – Wicked Prayer
The Crow is a good film, entertaining, great fun, good action scenes, an interesting story, a good soundtrack, and some solid acting from most of the cast involved, with a great performance from Brandon Lee.
City of Angels is a watchable film, but not a patch on the first Crow movie. Mostly uninteresting, you are not given any reason to care about any of the characters, and it is also silly at times. Average acting at best from most of the cast, with Vincent Perez nowhere near as good as Brandon Lee in the leading role. Short enough at 84-minutes, but at times feels like an inferior remake of the original Crow movie, and in the end it just seems like a pointless sequel.
Salvation is an entertaining and enjoyable film, has an interesting story, a pretty good cast (Kirsten Dunst is mostly under-used throughout though), is a little silly and predictable at times, but still a pretty good film. Not as good as the original Crow, but alot better than City of Angels.
Wicked Prayer is a good film, very entertaining, great fun, somewhat bloody and violent at times, has an interesting story, a good cast (Edward Furlong, David Boreanaz, Tara Reid, Marcus Chong, Yuji Okumoto, Tito Ortiz, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Danny Trejo, Dennis Hopper), and mostly good acting from all involved – David Boreanaz is very good as the main bad-guy (with hints of the Angelus character from Buffy and Angel), Edward Furlong is pretty good as the main good-guy (but not a patch on Brandon Lee), but Dennis Hopper doesn’t convince or work in the pretty small part he is given! Silly at times and has an underwhelming end sequence, but is still the best of the Crow sequels.

The Toolbox Murders (Tobe Hooper remake)
A pretty entertaining if unspectacular movie, which has some mildly entertaining & bloody (if over-the-top) death scenes, and an interesting but underdeveloped story. The film has an interesting cast (Angela Bettis, Brent Roam, Juliet Landau, Rance Howard, Sheri Moon, Greg Travis, Marco Rodríguez, Sara Downing), and there is a good performance from Angela Bettis in the main role, but only acceptable (and mostly at best basic) acting from most everyone else. On the whole the film is watchable enough, but it is silly at times and nothing is really explained in the end.
(**)

Dead & Buried
A good film, which is entertaining, has an interesting story, and an eerie atmosphere at time throughout. The film also has some good special effects, is violent & bloody, and has a good (if relatively predictable) ending. Whilst Dead & Buried is a good film, it is also a film I think a talented director and writer could make a good remake from.

I watched Cinderella Man today on DVD, I though it was awesome. It also made me cry. I've always though Russell Crowe was a fantastic actor but in this I thought he was amazing. Should have won an Oscar this film!

I ended up playing some Silent Hill 4 today and ended up going to see it tonight instead of Monday.

Boy does this seem to have split audiences. I really enjoyed it, though if I was not such a big fan of the games it would not have been as fun of an experience. The film takes parts of the games and mixes them up but leaves out a lot of vital elements which lead to it making very little sense. I think the whole cinema had wondered what the hell they had just seen. First two acts seemed pretty strong to me, everytime the sirens went off I was dreading what carnage would unfold but the final act was weaker with the drawn out flashback which actually seemed to confuse things more. The final church scene was brutal - more violent than anything I had seen in the four video games and I wondered if that scene, and an earlier scene featuring Pyramid Head at the church, had crossed into 18 certificate territory.

Confusing film, pretty tense and freaky, beautifully shot - I don't think there will be a middle ground with this you'll either really like it or hate it.

I struggle with this film on factual and scientific levels. Firstly, the fact that he chooses to eat McDonalds for thirty days to show how it is "bad" actually proves very little as no one suggest the results would be similar if eaten in moderation (although the film does point out a lot of people eat more than moderate amounts) and secondly, it underdevelops parts that would really proove something about McD as a corporation (such as their marketing to children, reasons people eat at McDonalds, ingredients in their food etc etc).

However, it is a very charming and entertaining film that although sounds formatic on paper, is edited so well that you barely notice it's linear format. Spurleck makes a great host to the show, and makes a great human guniea pig. I would recomend this film as a spectacle rather than anything else (although it makes a great movie to watch to motivate weight loss).

I give this film 3 potatoes out of a possible 5 potatoes.

Broken Flowers - read that this was kinda in the same mold as Lost In Translation (which i liked) so i gave it a go...i can't really say it was bad, it's just nothing really happened, there was no conclusion or anything, just a weird lazy/boring film...maybe you have to be intelligent to get it?

I bought the Fat Albert movie cuz i remember watching it on the Fun Factory as a lad and because i'm a mark for Kenan who plays Albert.

Fun film... strange how much it's aimed at kids since anyone who remember the kids show must be at least 20 by now....

Cosby cameo!

I'd give it three ~ out of five.

I saw an interview with Morgan Spurlock where he spoke about why he chose McDonald's, he said it wasn't about which fast food outlet he chose, just as long as he chose the one which represents the Americana way of life, and of course that is McDonald's. It wasn't so much picking on McDonalds, but just that there was no other choice.

Never did see any point to that film whatsoever.
It's like making a film saying "if you stab yourself in the chest over and over again, you might die". Or "if you drink bleach you might die" etc.
I think everyone knows that if they eat McDonalds allday, everyday, then it's not going to do them any good at all.
'ukedge' had it spot on in his first paragraph really.

If you eat the same thing day after day after day, regardless of what it is, it's not going to do you any good.
Everybody knows that fast food isn't good for you. But people choose to eat it.
It's like people who smoke or drink heavily, they KNOW it's no good for them. But it's their choice what they feed themselves and their family.
I don't think we really needed some bloke to do such a stupid and pointless experiement to figure it out.

If people enjoy fast food, drinking or smoking then it's entirely up to them. Unless they've been living in a cave for the past 15 years they know it's not good for them.
It's all about lifestyle choice. I'm not sure why people get so het up about what other people choose to consume.

Ofcourse it does. McDonalds are a massive company, their business is encouraging people to consume their product. It's how every business works!
But they're not forcing anyone to eat it. If people choose to, it's up to them. We all know it's not good for you, but most of us eat fast food sometimes. Some of us probably eat it more often.
LaGoosh
Yeah but alot of their advertising is towards children who don't know if the food is good or bad for you and don't care either way so they start of early in life eating at McDonalds and as they get older it's harder for the fattys to stop.

Ahem.

Just watched "Audition" by Takashi Miike. Wow. What a truly messed up film, maybe call it "Sympathy for the Psychotic" and you'd have a more true title tongue.gif Very very good film with some strange twists. Well worth seeing. Japanese 'creepy' horror at it's best.

Also just watched "Hotel Rwanda" fuck me I was in tears 3 times during the movie.... Very powerful and striking, well worth seeing just to show you a few realities of the world, mainly those with everything are generally cowardly.

Just finished watching Requiem For A Dream: My god, this film is tragic. I'm quite depressed right now after watching it. Thank god I don't 'do' drugs. Really well made film, technically sound, creative editing but nothing to OTT. Darren Aronofsky is very Kubrick-esque in terms of his storytelling techniques, but it works. Amazing performances all around, Jared Leto is great, as is Ellen Burstyn, and even Marlon Wayans managed NOT to annoy the hell out of me.

Watch it, if you haven't done so already!

I don't often post in this thread, because everything I watch these days seems to be "not bad". So here's a couple of not bad films I've watched in the last couple of weeks.

Skeleton Key.
Spooky thriller type jobby with hoodoo (similar to voodoo) and stuff. John Hurt's in it, being great.
Not a bad film, nice ending (that I had to explain to the missus about 5 times before she got it), but took a while to get going.

40 Year Old Virgin
Didn't fancy this, but turned out better than I expected. Plenty of unnecessary nudity, and some nice bitter humour in it which wasn't as dumbed down as I expected.
It's only major downfall (and I mean major) was at the end when it went into the standard rom-com ending of "girl finds out all is not as it seems, they fall out, but semi-tragic circumstances bring them back together". Bleh.
Otherwise, not bad.

The Hills Have Eyes. (original)
Loved this. There's something about late 70's/early 80's horrors that is so identifyably feelable about them. Hard to explain, but they all seem to have a hot blonde girl, a handsome young man who wears shorts that border on the homoerotic, and a lot of it is shot with the sun low in the sky, so you get a lot of lens flare, and a dusty, misty quality to the picture.
Like Texas Chainsaw Massacre though, I felt the end came too abruptly.

Hey, so I watched Brokeback Mountain last night. And it’s actually really good.

I normally hate the movie that people know will win the Oscars. It’s like being told you will enjoy something. But this was actually fantastic. A deft touch of polemic from Ang Lee (Although that Wyoming scenery really directs itself) lifts your heart up with the mountains, whilst the lead performances (Especially Ledger, who was superb) keep you grounded with the story, not the panoramics.

The sense of impending doom is palpable throughout, in much the same way as in Of Mice And Men. And when the end comes, even though you knew it wouldn’t end well, you can’t help but be crushed. The person I saw it with claimed her life was ruined.

All in all, a great film and recommended.

Agreed, paticularly with the highlighted part.

My only real criticism of the film is how fast it tears through the years. I understand there was a lot of ground to cover in two hours but sometimes the editing felt too rushed and scattershot. Overall though I thought it was a very good film, and the last half hour was absolutely heartbreaking.
King of my World
Watched Terminator 2 on the weekend as I recently bought the Terminator trilogy. Lasts for about 2 and a half hours which is good and give time for the story to develop. Definitely recommend if anyone hasnt seen it.

A few films I have watched over the past couple of weeks...

Assault on Precinct 13 (2005)
A good film, very entertaining, bloody and violent, with some exciting action, a good cast, and solid acting.

Swingers
A very good film, very entertaining, funny, has witty & quotable dialogue, a good soundtrack & use of music, an interesting story, and good central performances from Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau.
(***1/2)

Go
A very good film, very entertaining, very funny, great fun, a good story, a good cast, good to very good performances (Tay Diggs is great), and a great soundtrack.
(****)

Pyrokinesis
An entertaining film, which is engaging at times, and has an interesting story. The acting tends to range from good to mediocre, with the characters themselves mostly interesting and pretty well fleshed out throughout the movie. The music used throughout the movie is pretty poor, and a lot of the time seems to be used out-of-place. It is the special effects though which make the film good, because even though limited there are some great fire effects and some good make-up effects used throughout. Not a great film, or even a particularly memorable film either, but it is mostly rewarding and enjoyable viewing with some really great SFX.
(***)

Azumi
A very good film, very entertaining, has a good story, and some good & interesting characters (Bijomaru is a really great character). The film is also violent and very bloody, with some great action & fight scenes, some dark humour, and on the whole is just great fun. Some of the violence and action is of a comic-book style and Crouching Tiger style action at times though. The movie is not without its flaws, and could be off-putting due to its (uncut) 143-minute runtime, but it is a very good and very enjoyable film.
(****)

Azumi 2
A very good film, very entertaining, has a good story, some very good action & fight scenes, and which is violent and very bloody. The film is a good continuation of the original Azumi, and much like the original has some entertaining characters and is great fun.

Heroic Duo
An entertaining film, with an interesting story, a pretty good cast (including Ekin Cheng, Leon Lai, Francis Ng), and a mixture of good and bad acting. The film has some entertaining action scenes, but also has fight scenes which seem out of place, and some unnecessarily confusing (and sometimes corny) dialogue. The movie is also silly at times, has a messy flow, and tries to be clever but misses the mark alot of the time. Not a great film, and not really a film worth recommending, but an entertaining enough 100-minutes viewing.

That's down to bad parenting more than anything tho. I think it's more comfortable for people to blame McDonalds for having obese kids than to blame themselves. Because kids don't get fat by eating McDonalds every now and again, they get fat eating it all the time.
