Watched Iron Man last night on Sky for the 1st time and I really enjoyed it I'd say it was my favourite of the comic book adaptation so far. Downey Jr was excellent in his role it looked like he was loving every minute of it and its got me really looking forward to the sequel.
Joe_the_Lion
I've recorded Iron Man but haven't got around to watching it. Did watch The Incredible Hulk last week and found it shockingly enjoyable, much better than the Ang Lee/Eric Bana effort. They laid it on a bit thick at the beginning with some references to the TV show but other than that it was a fun ride. To be honest I can't work out if it was a better film that I was expecting or if I've just begun to lower my standards.

BxB Hulk
I tried watching the new Hulk film with Eric Bana not long after it came out but it bored me to tears and the cgi Hulk was shite, aint got nothin on Lou Ferrigno.

MUM & DAD - 7.5/10

Just read the cast for this, Bones from Operation Good Guys as a bastard! How can that be?!

Looks like a curious film though, might give it a go.

I watched Sid & Nancy for the first time the other month, he was the drummer in it. While he was only in a few scenes, it was hard to watch without thinking of Mum & Dad. Some very, very wrong moments. sad.gif

QUOTE (BBC)
A Japanese horror film has been refused an 18 certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) because of its graphic torture scenes.

According to BBFC director David Cooke, Grotesque presented "little more than an unrelenting and escalating scenario of humiliation, brutality and sadism".

Its "unacceptable content", he added, meant cuts were "not a viable option".

The BBFC rarely refuses to pass films, having denied only three titles seeking an 18 rating over the last four years.

These include violent sex thriller Murder Set Pieces and Terrorists, Killers And Other Wackos, a film comprising real clips of execution and torture.

'Minimal narrative'

Two pornographic works seeking the restricted R18 rating have also been rejected in the same period.

The distributors of Grotesque had hoped to receive an 18 certificate for the film, which includes scenes involving amputation and eye-gouging.

"The chief pleasure on offer seems to be in the spectacle of sadism (including sexual sadism) for its own sake," said Mr Cooke.

Its "minimal narrative or character development," he continued, set it apart from such other "torture-themed" works as the Saw and Hostel movie series.

The BBFC drew criticism earlier this year for passing Danish horror Antichrist uncut, despite its graphic scenes of sex, violence and mutilation.

That's Grotesque on my list of things to watch then.... These are the people that gave "Visitor Q" A rating for heavens sake...

Just when you think the BBFC are getting better, they do something like this. Utter cunts.

Watched Narrow Margin last night. Good fun, nothing too taxing, and you get JT Walsh AND M Emmet Walsh in the same film, and it doesn't get more awesome than that.

I saw I love you man the other day.. I had been really looking forward to seeing this as Paul Rudd has been great in a bunch of recent comedies I've seen, most notably that one with Stiffler where they have to mentor kids... That film was great.

Unlike this one. Man, what a stinker. Fucking rubbish. Lazy. Lazy plot would have been forgiveable, but they were so fucking lazy with the jokes as well. There weren't many really.. And fuck. The guy in the gym with the squeeky voice has to be the worst 'incidental wacky character that turns up a few times' ever.

I probably laughed about 4 times. There were long periods where I was listening to the tv, but cringeing so hard I couldn't even bring myself to look up at the screen.

Such a let down; the most I've been disappointed by a film in a long time.

One to avoid.

Still, I gave the sequel, The Devil's Rejects, a chance and it is immensely better, succeeding on a lot of the levels that House of 1000 corpses fails. It feels like a much stronger tribute to exploitation flicks, rather than an incredibly cheesy version of one. The violence, the sickening content, the sleaze, the humour - everything is better. Plus, DDP's in it! Glad to see he's getting some work after Kimberly flashed her tit in The 40 Year Old Virgin. thumbs-up.gif Downsides are that it does tend to drag, Rob Zombie over-directs a little (he seems to really loves slow-motion) and I didn't like the ending.

See, i really liked the ending.
Although the first time I saw it, it almost seemed like Rob had the idea to end a movie with a driving sequence/shootout while Freebird played so he wrote a movie around that idea, it almost seemed cliched.

That scene itself itself is pretty good. What I didn't like about the ending is...

I have to say I agree with their decision. If they award it an 18 rating then doesn't that give it the possibility of being put in more cinema's across the UK? If so then a film like this shouldn't be readily available. At the end of the day, like the article says, they have only rejected three in the last fours years which is an unbelievably small number. Whether you agree with it or not, censorship he there for the right reasons (in some countries anyway) and now and again it has to be put into effect.

Nothing should be censored. Ever.
JLM
It should be readily available to adults who can decide for themselves whether or not they want to see it. It's a work of fiction, created using special effects and performed by actors. It's not a real snuff movie seeking national distribution or footage of real life child abuse. I find it extremely hard to justify censoring a totally fictional work on the grounds of its content. Putting an age restriciton on it makes perfect sense, but to deny grown adults their right to choose what they watch is far too meddlesome for my liking.

It doesnt. Its a solid three star film at best, I was massively disappointed with it.

I was also pretty dissappointed with 'I Love You Man'. I loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall, so was looking forward to another film starring Jason Segal as a main character. Unfortunately it wasnt written by him and was pretty dull. I thought Role Models was a little better but nothing special.
ultimo the great
Your all crazy, I Love You Man is a laugh a minute.

As for Grotesque being banned, it takes a hell of a lot to get the BBFC to out right ban a film. Looking at what they have said the thing that jumps out straight away is sexual sadism which along with Child abuse and cruelty to animals are the main things that the BBFC will cut.

We have probably the best censorship laws in the world which is a hell of a turn around from what it was like up untill 2000. Given they've passed near enough all the video nasties of the 70's and 80's, stuff like Hostel, the Saw movies, Miike's films and plenty of hardcore scene's to hear them bashed is pretty ridiculous. There should always be some form of censorship (i love korean films but i don't want to see any of the Animal cruelity in some of their films) and for me the BBFC get it right, were damn lucky.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over not getting to see Grotesque looking at the trailer it looks shit.

Last Film watched: V For Vendetta which is fucking dreadful.
Dynamite Duane
Saw Knocked Up the night, it had some funny bits but it was a bit of a soppy film after a while.
LaGoosh
Knocked Up is a perfectly average 80 minute long fim that is dragged out to a fucking dreadful and boring 2 hours plus. Also Forgetting Sarah Marshall is shit and my guess is I Love You Man is too. Jason Segal is the most unlikeable unfunny comedy actor I've seen in years.

edit - I really liked Knocked Up but if they trimmed some of the fat (down to 90 minutes.) it would have gained a few more points.

The fact is that the BBFC have to move with the times and understand that a move like this is counter-productive. The majority of film-watchers out there probably would never even have heard of Grotesque. As soon as this lot hit it with their mighty banhammer then people are now going to clambering over themselves to find a torrent of it or get an import of it from eBay or Amazon.

What doesn't make any sense in this case is that the BBFC usually give out a list of cuts that should be made to achieve a certificate before banning something. In this case, they didn't. Still, I'm sure that squat cunt John Beyer is overjoyed.
LaGoosh
Yeah but during the movie Segal is so dull and wussy that he actually deserves to get brutally dumped. His timing sucks, he's got a face that just deserves to get punched and can't really act either. Also Sarah Marshall is really annoying and not even that fit. I found Russell Brand funny at times but apart from that I can't think of any paticularly good lines (that "you sound like you're from Lahdahn" doesn't count, it's really annoying and unfunny) and there isn't any paticularly memorable comic scenes or sequences. IT'S SHIT.

Though not as bad as V For Vendetta which is really, really terrible. I will send my fist through the internet and out off your screen straight into your headpiece if you disagree with this.

Looks like a whole load of fun to me!

Looks fucking brilliant.

Typical Tarrantino IMO, quite an over the top premise which he will make fucking Golden.

Oh and the fact that it's been in the works for fucking years will make it even more special.

Wow that random profanity makes you appear well hard. I'd say Death Proof was "quite an over the top premise" too, only he didn't make it "fucking golden", he made it fucking shit. Trailer for this is underwhelming. Nothing wrong with Pitt's delivery there, he's done that style before. I'm more concerned with the presence of Eli Roth, one of the worst filmmakers to emerge in the last decade. Mike Myers is apparently in the film too, with Tarantino revealing that "Mike let it be known that he's a huge fan of my work", so I guess that's all it takes these days. Mickey Rourke has turned down the opportunity to work with Tarantino twice, citing not strong enough material, which QT naturally baulked at.

We all know the guy is a mark for himself, but he's losing the run of himself too. Don't get me wrong, I like the majority of his back catalogue, but this is his make or break film. He's been talking about for years and years and I just have the feeling it's going to be self-indulgent shit.

I'm glad to report I was wrong (yes, imagine that) and it is infact, excellent. I'll probably elaborate more later.

Season 2 gets a bad rap. Lynch was on board for much more of it than is generally believed, and it was more of a case of he went off to do a movie than he disowned it or anything.

The first half of it is fucking awesome and to a similar standard to season 1. There's a big drop in quality and some crappy subplots in the second half, but the final few episodes are great and the Lynch finale is just fucking monumental.

Going back to the subject of Grotesque, the BBFC have banned it. And what an influential and powerful organisation they are too - you can watch it here for nothing.
Gladstone Small
And after that, I watched it as well. I wish I hadn't, not because of the violence, but because it was just utter bollocks. I can understand the point that they are trying to make with Grotesque - the fact that the torturer is only doing this for sexual gratification is supposed to make you despair more over his intentions and make you feel more uncomfortable. But it doesn't work. There is just no point to it and no pay-off in sight makes it a worthless experience.

The acting is terrible too. I mean, if you had some of these things done to you, you'd fucking scream not sort of pull a face like Anne Widdecombe had come on the telly or something. He's just And then the final violent act culminates in something so fucking stupid that they wouldn't have put it in a Friday The 13th film and a final scene that was utterly predictable.

Because of the understated reactions of the actors to what was going on, they missed a trick. If they had actually screamed more and there had been more realism, especially during one of the sexual acts, it would have been more effective. Saw and Hostel had some semblance of a plot to them. This had nothing. As film like this deserves to stay in obscurity yet the BBFC have given it the oxygen of publicity that it never deserved by banning it. What a bunch of twats.

3/10.

Before that I had watched R-Point, which was a Korean ghost film by way of Predator and Platoon where an army patrol goes to find a lost platoon and then encounters some spookiness at a 'temple built on the tombs of lost lives from years gone by'. Oooooh. This was a load of crap too. I think it probably wasn't helped by bad subtitling but some parts made no sense anyway such as an encounter with an American patrol wittering on about nothing at all and contributing nothing at all to the plot.

There were one or two nice scenes that worked pretty well but it was dull and about 15 minutes too long and then of course they had to have the obligatory scary long black-haired girl crowbarred in somewhere for even less reason than ever before here. I'm hoping The Guard Post is better than this, but I knew I should have watched The Host tonight.

4/10.

Watched Inglourious Basterds again on Sunday. Housemate returned from holiday and wanted to see it and we were more than willing to give it a second watch. Just as much fun the second time. It doesn't seem like the sort of film that'll win many awards but Christoph Waltz deserves so much praise for his performance that I hope he scoops a few. I know he got "Best Actor" at the Cannes film festival, but in truth that should just be the start. Tremendous performance.
