Went on a date to the cinema tonight and somehow I wound up seeing this atrocious piece of wank. Any one else totally unimpressed by this? I pretty much guessed the outcome of this movie before the first half hour was over, it probably wouldn’t have been so bad, if it wasn’t so fucking obvious. The dialogue is pretty terrible too.

I watched the wonderfully over the top Con Air (not for the first time of course) last night. It's just a fun movie with great characters, silly action and it's extremely quotable too. Plus, you have John Malkovich hamming it up looking like a skinny Steve Austin, Colm Meany chewing the scenery and Nic Cage in a mullet sporting a dodgy southern accent and no-selling bullet wounds. What's not to love?

Cusack's in it as well. If John Cusack's in it you know it's gold. It was one of the first 5 dvds I bought, when they were all new and spangly.

Got a cheapo DVD from Poundland called "The Nutty Nut". How can a movie that has the writing talents of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell be *so* bad. They even changed their names to the famous "Alan Smithee and R.O.C. Sandstorm". Truly horrible. Heres a write-up on IMDB.com about it..

My fave bit...
"Where you going?"
"I'm gonna show you God does exist."
And then Cage walks up the aisle, kicking bad guy ass along the way, when one of the baddies
shoots him in the arm and he no-sells it Undertaker style while the bad guy.... LOOKS AT THE GUN THAT HAS JUST WORKED WITH A QUIZZICAL EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE!!!
Cage then beats him down while still no-selling the bullet wound. ~~~~~~~~~
Wedding Crashers - Will Ferrell is funny, the film is ok. Isla Fisher is in it so it gets 14 stars.
House of Wax - What Ebb said pretty much. Really good fun trashy horror film with some really cool visuals. Paris Hilton gets a big spike through her stupid mong-faced head so it gets 23 stars.
The 40 year old virgin - This was a good laugh. Didn't need to be a full two hours long, some of the dialogue in the scenes where nothing really happens is tremendous though, especially the conversation about watching Ghandi while baked. Good cameo from Champ Kind too.
Final Destination 3 - went down for an early showing today...excellent stuff, if you liked the other two your in for a blast, story wise its stupid and far-fetched but that aint the point, the deaths are what its all about and their fucking brilliant in this...

Just got back from this as well and I'll agree with everything you said. It's tongue is planted firmly in its cheek and its funny as hell (funnier than a lot of comedies I've seen recently) and the death's are ridiculously over the top.

Brokeback MountainSaw this masterful piece of work as well. A classic love story that should last for years to come. It started off a little slow but then this is just to build up to the fabulous next 90 minutes that tells the story of the rest of their lives once they leave Brokeback Mountain. This was my favourite section of the film, seeing them living normal lives, meeting wives and having kids yet still going to rekindle their love up on Brokeback Mountain every 6 months or so, the ending was terrific too. Deserves any accolade it gets.

I thought it was predictable and pretentious. Each to his own I guess.
Just to add to the Oldboy discussion, here are reviews of the three films in the Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy For Mr Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance)...
Sympathy For Mr Vengeance
A great, very cleverly conceived movie, with a great story (of the lengths a brother will go to try to help his dying sister, and the lengths a father will go to try to get revenge on the killers of his daughter). There is great emotion to the film - both happiness and sadness (but mostly alot of sadness), and you feel sympathy for both parties. The film is slow paced, but the story is good enough to hold the viewers interest. There is great acting by all involved, some needed dark humour, the violence used is realistic (and has impact), and the movie has an especially great last 10-minutes. Highly recommended, and the best of the Vengeance Trilogy.
(*****)
Oldboy
A great film, with a great and very interesting story, and which is violent at times but also has some dark humour. Min-sik Choi(Shiri, Brotherhood, Crying Fist) is perfectly cast and amazing as the main character of Oh Dae-su, Ji-tae Yu(Into the Mirror, Natural City) is great as Woo-jin, Hye-jeong Kang is great as Mi-Do, and the rest of the cast are also good in the roles they are given. The film has some good plot twists, a very good soundtrack, and a great end 15-minutes or so leading into a wonderful ending. The only problem I have is whether the major plot-twist is too predictable?
Some good extras on the 2nd DVD, including featurettes, interviews with the cast and director, and deleted scenes.
(*****)
Sympathy For Lady Vengeance
A very good film, with an interesting story (the story does jumps around a bit though - to the past, then back to the present, then to the past again (maybe too much)), some occasional dark humour, and some violence (as usual) and a good soundtrack.. The film however has a slower pace than Mr Vengeance and Oldboy, and yet more unnecessary animal cruelty (shooting a dog)! Min-sik Choi is great again (as he was in Oldboy), and there is good acting from Yeong-ae Lee in the main role. The two main leads out of Mr. Vengeance are also good in the small and limited roles they are given as two assassins (it must be noted that alot of the cast from the other two films in the Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance & Oldboy) are given roles or cameos in this film). On the whole the film is better in the 2nd hour (and in particular the last 30-minutes) than the 1st hour, and lacks a big twist (like Oldboy) and real emotion (like Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance). The weakest of the Trilogy of film, but still very good on it’s own merits.

Oh, and Dead Man's Shoes was great (a **** film)...
American Pie
A very good teen comedy, which is funny, entertaining, and great fun, with some gross-out humour but nothing bad and nothing which effects the enjoyment of the film. There is a good cast, a good soundtrack, and some likeable and very entertaining characters. Eugene Levy (Jim’s Dad) and Seann William Scott (Stifler) are great in their roles, Jason Biggs (Jim) and Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia) are very good, and Eddie Kaye Thomas (Paul Finch) and Allison Hannigan (Michelle) are both good.
(***1/2)
American Pie 2
A very good teen comedy, which is funny, entertaining, and great fun, with some gross-out humour but nothing bad and nothing which effects the enjoyment of the film (much like the original movie). Again there is a good cast (the same main cast as the original American Pie), a very good soundtrack, and some likeable and very entertaining characters. The movie is set one year after the first American Pie film, and is a good progression of the original movie. Eugene Levy (Jim’s Dad) and Seann William Scott (Stifler) are great in their roles, Jason Biggs (Jim) is very good, and Eddie Kaye Thomas (Paul Finch), Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia) and Allison Hannigan (Michelle) are all good.
(***1/2)
American Pie 3 - The Wedding
A very good teen comedy, which is funny, entertaining, and good fun, with some gross-out humour but nothing too bad (except maybe the dog waste joke) and nothing which really effects the enjoyment of the film. Like the first two movies there is a good cast (with most of the main cast from the original two films), a good soundtrack, and some likeable and very entertaining characters.
Eugene Levy (Jim’s Dad) and Seann William Scott (Stifler) are great in their roles, Jason Biggs (Jim) and Fred Willard (Michelle’s Dad) are very good, and Eddie Kaye Thomas (Paul Finch) and Allison Hannigan (Michelle) are both good.
(***1/2)
American Pie 4 – Band Camp
An entertaining and fun film, with some gross-out humour but nothing too bad and nothing which really effects the enjoyment of the film. The film has likeable and entertaining characters, a pretty good soundtrack, and a good young cast (that show future potential). The film only has two of the cast who were in the original three films, and even though there are enough references to Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott), there really needed to be a cameo from him to make it worthwhile. Eugene Levy (Jim’s Dad) is good again, but is only really given a limited role. Tad Hilgenbrink (Matt Stifler) is good and entertaining (and like a mini-Stifler), but no-where near as great as Seann William Scott! And Arielle Kebbel (Elyse) is good.
(**1/2)
Proof
An entertaining film, with great performances from the three main leads (Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, Jake Gyllenhaal), but not enough subject matter from them to really work with. Was a free showing so I cannot really complain, but in the end there is nothing really to the film, and I seem to have missed the point of the movie!

Hotel RwandaWonderful film, based on the true story of the Rwandan genocide in 1994 and centered around a man who managed to save 1000+ people in his hotel. I wasn't too aware of the background to the genocide and the problems surronding it (I was only 6/7 at the time), but it was explained during the film and made it easy to follow (unlike Munich) and I became engrossed in Don Cheadle's quest. Don Cheadle's performance is classic and I was pleased that a film like this was made.

I also got "Dear Frankie" too. Awesome little picture. I remember when I went to the cinema to see it due to the fact the pub I drink is in it I remember seeing tons of people coming out sobbing and stuff. Some mad woman in front of me was crying when The Stranger reads out the kids letters. Its a very emotional film and Gerard Butler is the shit in it. Recommended.

Inoffensive fluff, but in these sort of films I always feel sorry for the perfectly likeable boy/girlfriend who gets the elbow.
The wife loved it, but she didn't like The John in the infinitely better "High Fidelity." I will never understand women

5.52/10 - slightly above average, but wouldn't go out of my way to see it (unless I had somehow turned into a woman on the way to Blockbuster).

The Edukators
A German film about 3 young 20 somethings who want to change the Western world through infiltrating rich people's homes and reorganising there stuff and leaving them notes such as "you have too much money". Doesn't sound like a great film but this was good stuff all the way, the story developed into a really thought out and well put across view on the Western obsession with money and displayed interesting thought patterns of the 60s hippie generation and how they're the ones in charge voting conservative with all the money. Also had a very tender and realistic love story/triangle in there and the ending was brilliant.
