And why not 10?

Good question, but I didn't give it the full ten because I wasn't completely and utterly blown away or stunned into submission and it didn't change my life or make me look at life in a completely different way, it did make me look at some things differently but not in a life changing way.

Coming To America

Not so much a new film in terms of it's release or of my viewing but one i picked up cheaply and had not seen for a very, very LONG time. Decent enough for what it was it's funny in most places where it's meant to be but also carried a fairly decent message under it regarding up brining and social standing..............which got me interested as it then got me thinking about the similarity to Eddie Murphy's character in Trading Places which is my favourite film EVER.

And then low and behold the penny dropped. Cameo appearences by Randolph and Mortimer Duke ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from Trading Places as tramps begging in the street. Awesome little tie in although the films aren't linked at all smile.gif Nice little sub part for Samuel L Jackson too which i never realised the first time round.

Decent overall but nothing near John Landis' other stuff like Blues Brothers or Trading Places.

The commentary will certainly increase its wank factor for you. Along with being the greatest film of all time, the commentary still stands as my favourite of all time ever too.

Norton is like a fountain of information throughout. He'll point things out and explain things to you you never would have possibly noticed after 50 viewings. There's so many little things, little details within the film that you miss, yet add a whole other dimension to it's greatness. Every little thing that happens has significance. It's pure genius on every level. This film is my bible.

And the general banter between Fincher, Norton and Pitt is class too.

Watched a couple of movies last night:

Hostage.
Quite good but very predictable, Willis was good in the role and Mars was very creepy, I liked the end I thought Walter had turned on him.

Wolf Creek.
I really wanted to like this movie, but didn’t. The first part was good, the chemistry between the group was fun, then it all went silly. The guy good, but he didn’t seem too scary. I hated the part when she shot him, now if you in a situation where someone is going to torture and murder you and you have them knocked out, you make sure they are dead, you do what you have to do, not slap him with a piece of wood.
It wasn’t as gruesome or scary as I thought it would be, but worth seeing.
LaGoosh
I watched the original Psycho all the way through last night.

It really is a masterpiece. Fucking genuis. His face at the end as he is sitting in that cold dark room is amazing.
DJM
Cursed (Region 1 Unrated)
An entertaining film with a good cast, but it is predictable as to who the original werewolf is, and the action is over-the-top and silly at times. Christina Ricci is good and likeable in one of the main parts, and most of the other cast members are acceptable in their parts as well, but Mya is very poor throughout (and I was glad to see her die). The werewolf make-up & special effects are mostly good, but alot of the CGI is very poor (and doesn’t fit into the film). Cursed is nowhere near as good as some of Wes Craven’s other films like the Scream Trilogy or even Red Eye. If you are looking for a good Werewolf movie then watch American Werewolf in London, Dog Soldiers, or any of the films in the Ginger Snaps Trilogy as they are all much better films.

Stigmata - aint seen this in years, really good supernatural thriller...its kinda like a modern take on the exorcist, a great story and well acted. It's a shame the director has gone onto make the the Fog re-make which by all accounts is abysmal (already in the imdb bottom 100). Stigmata is well worth a viewing though.

I watched Shallow Grave again last night, one of my favourite films and also Danny Boyle's best film in my opinion. However after seeing it for what has to be the sixth or seventh time, I still have a question about the ending.

SPOILER
I'm of the opinion that Alex (Ewan McGregor's character) dies. He's stabbed in the chest/shoulder area and has been left to bleed to death. The police show up after an uncertain amount of time and he's still alive, yet instead of rushing him to the hospital, they're taking pictures of him. My mates all say he lives, but he has to end up dead right? :/

Die Hard: With A Vengeance

Friend returned my boxset which i completely forgot he had. Nice little surprise.

Went with Part III as i hadn't seen it for a while. Although i've seen it before i'm still pleasently surprised by how good it is. It's very rare for a trilogy to be great throughout but for it too dip off so badly in Die Hard 2 - which was utter shite as far as i am concerned - and then pop back up with such a strong offering is cracking.

Clever little storyline, Willis & Samuel L played off each other very well and Jeremy Irons played a cracking villain. Not quite as nifty with the one liners and 80's class as the first film but not far behind and definitely brings the trilogy back into respectable territory after Die Hard 2.

The Aristocrats

Quite amusing joke documentary, as in it's a documentary about a joke rather than it's a Spinal Tap-a-like.

Some of the editing almost made my eyes bleed though as quite a bit was done on a single camera and they'd chop up the interview with straight cuts.

Cartman's was by far the best retelling of the joke.

Annie Hall

My first experience of a Woody Allen movie (Antz doesn't really count) and I was blown away, probably the funniest film I've ever seen. I'm desperate now to see every Woody Allen film because I was so fond of this film. Diane Keaton is perfect in her role and so is Woody, he plays the nervous neurotic Jew like he is one. Really clever too and fits in with New York chic/cool probably before it existed. Loved it.

Saw II

Better than the first one I thought, and for horror movies these days, that takes a bit of doing. Excellent story all of the way through, and the links to the first movie were pretty good too. Red Eye - being a Wes Craven fan ive been abit slow in checking this out, but i just did and it was pretty fucking good, a change in direction for Craven which is probably a good idea after the travesty that was Cursed. Cillian Murphy is a bad ass in this movie, i always like his movie roles and this was no exception. First 45mins on the plane were excellent and intense (kinda in the veign of Phone Booth the way it seems like suck a simple thing to get out of but the bad dude has every angle covered). The last 15mins or so in the house is Craven going back to the Scream formula and its fucking wicked. Great little movie, check it.

I watched The In-Laws. It's an Action/Comedy with Michael Douglas as the Father of the groom and also a CIA agent. He becomes the tormenter of the Father of the bride as he drags him into his 'scene'. It's quite funny, easy to watch and good fun. nothing to be taken seriously but a good 90 mins entertainment.

City Of God is indeed awesome. I've been tempted to buy City Of Men on a few occasions but haven't got round to it yet. To anyone that has seen it: is it worth getting?

Last night I embarked on a mini horror movie fest with some friends:

The Devils Rejects - good, but not as horrifying as it had been made out to be
The Amityville Horror (remake) - decent, haven't seen the original so can't compare it
The House By The Cemetary - early 80's Lucio Fulci horror. Much unintentional hilarity from the fact that the voice over of 6 year old child of questionable gender Bob was done by a middle aged woman.

...what a load of fucking shite. Poorly acted, scripted, directed...poorly everything. This film is like a low-budget TV movie gone horribly wrong.
