Hi Guys

Currently watching superman the animated series season 2. Watched the first disc the first episode with bizarro is very good and u end up feeling sorry for Bizarro. I really also liked the evolution of Luminous and the episode with Mr MXTYPLUK(sp?) was funny and i cant wait till disc 2 with the world's finest 3 part episode featuring my favourite the joker.smile.gif

I watched Naked Gun and Mallrats today.

Both films did their job, they made me laugh, heartily! Mallrats is a classic slacker film with amusing characters but very shallow. Naked Gun is a classic spoof/slapstick comedy and is my favourite film of this genre. Infact, I prefer it to Airplane, Leslie Nielsen can make me roll around with just a look. If you haven't seen Naked Gun yet, buy it now.

Thomas Jane stars as a South African Police Captain who gets a bit pissed off and decides to rob banks. True Story. Very Good film.

yeah..great movie, very un-hollywood...

Jane was a psycho!

Alien - Director's Cut - cracked open my lovely new box-set and watched Alien...first time ive seen the movie since i was young so i didnt really remember anything...fucking bad-ass movie, slow paced and tense as fuck. I pretty much loved every second of it, favourite scene...the death of Brett in the chain room, holy fuck...

brilliant film...onto Aliens smile.gif

Sweet Sixteen

Just watched this film. Really astounding, it felt so realistic and hard and the central character, played brilliantly by Martin Compston, took the whole film through a range of emotions from start to finish. Deserves to be seen by a lot of people as it talks to young-uns in a reasonable and realistic way. Great film.

Just Friends

Shit. Not funny. I'm a fan of Ryan Reynolds and he did his best to get the laughter out of it but it just wasn't there. It felt more like a chick-flick than an out and out comedy which it was advertised as. I hate misleading an audience. Oh well.

I know it's an Oldie, but I watched "Seven Samurai" again last night, I must say it's such a damn good film and I hadn't noticed a short documentary/narrative on it's extras before so I watched that too which gave me some whole new insights into the film and Kurosawa himself.

The Characterisations are fantastic and the relationships between the two different castes really makes you wonder how anyone got by in those times, Well worth watching if you haven't seen it already. It's easy to see how he inspired so many other directors.

A true classic - i have this in my Akira Kurosawa Collection set - its 2 boxsets in 1 bigger box, 11 dvds covering 7 of his best movies. Seven Samurai kncoks spots off so many films that are out these days. They dont make em like they used to....

Better than the original though I thought, and on the whole a good film (with good acting from the main cast).

Dagon
A strange, but interesting and very entertaining film. It has a good story, some good weird looking villagers, good make-up and special effects, is pretty bloody at times, and seems to be a faithful HP Lovecraft adaptation. It does have mostly poor CGI though, and a somewhat silly & predictable ending. An enjoyable enough film on the whole, and easily worth the £2.50 I paid for it.

What is Havoc about anyways? I hear Anne Hathaway gets her tits out, which is reason enough to make me interested.

Yeah, but you can download that sort of thing - you have to sit through another 80 odd minutes with that pile of wank (no pun intended). There's one really odd scene which involves latino's, the two main females, and rape. Weird.

I watched Old Boy the other night/morning. Was very weird, i caught onto it pretty early though and quite enjoyed it - it's gorey in part, but not as bad as i had been prepared for.

I too just finished watching Green Street:

SPOILER
I love the way i was swinging between liking and disliking some of the characters. Pete, for example, came in in the first scene he's in and he's a loudmouth prick. Then by the middle, and he's somebody thats followed, he mellows out towards Matt.

Elijah Wood. Originally i thought 'what the fuck', to this choice, but it's perfect. Sure, we know he's a wimp. Thats why it works.

The final fight scene was immense. The main fight of Pete and Tommy, and then when he brings up the death of Tommy's kid...

Also, Jake Moon~.

SPOILER

Know what you mean about swinging between like and dislike for the characters. I hated Bovver throughout the film but you really want him to do the business in that last scene!

Dark Water (2002)
An enjoyable and pretty interesting ghost story film. It is pretty predictable (you should be able to guess what is going on pretty quickly), and has a slow pace for most of the duration, but has a creepy edge, hints of Ringu, good acting from the two main cast members (the mother and daughter), and a good last 15-minutes.
(**1/2)

Dark Water (2005)
A good film, which has more explanation than the original Dark Water, and makes more sense. However it has maybe too much explained, to the point where there is no subtlety to some of the story (whereas in the original movie there were a few things not fully explained (and the viewer was left to have their own thoughts and opinion), in this remake everything is given to the viewer and they do not have to think too much while watching the film). The movie also has a good cast (Jennifer Connelly, John C. Reilly, Tim Roth, Dougray Scott, Pete Postlethwaite), and even though it is more of a drama than a thriller/horror for the most part, it is on the whole more enjoyable than the original.

Just back from that "Running Scared" movie with Paul Walker there. Pretty bland stuff with various plot twists. Not very good. The couple trying to get that kid from "Birth" to film kiddie porn was rather strange.

Didn't like it.

Ong Bak
Watched it again, and it is still a great film which shows how athletic and quick Tony Jaa is, and how good his (Muay Thai) fighting skills are. It also has a perfectly acceptable story (but the story doesn’t matter as it is the action which makes the film), most of the fight/action scenes are amazing (the repeated shots from different camera angles of some of the action scenes can get a little annoying at times though), and a tuk-tuk sequence which is crazy. An easy recommendation for anyone who likes Martial Arts movies, and Tony Jaa should be a big name in the future!

There are some great extras (on the 2nd DVD), including some very interesting behind the scenes featurettes (showing how many of the stuntmen and even Tony Jaa got injured during the filming of Ong Bak, and how dangerous some of the action and stunts were), some promotional demonstrations by Tony Jaa, and some interviews with members of the cast.
(****1/2)

Tom Yum Goong
A great movie, with a storyline which seems somewhat poor to begin with (the idea of basing the film around elephants being stolen), but become somewhat adequate in the end (it is a simplistic story, with a noble feeling that surrounds Tony Jaa's character). There is about 20-minutes before any fighting occurs at the beginning of the film, but when the action & fighting does come it is great (and better than Ong Bak) - the fight scene with the skaters and bikers is amazing, the 4-minute stairway sequence is amazing, the fight between Tony Jaa and Lateef Crower(sp?) is amazing, the first fight with Nathan Jones is good, the fight against a legitimate 60+ people is amazing and beautifully violent(!), and the fight against the 4 bodyguards neat the end is great as well. Tony Jaa also seems to shows more intensity in this movie than Ong Bak. Like Ong Bak, this film is an easy recommendation, and Tony Jaa continues to impress (I would like to see that he could do with a new director though).
(****+ would have been better if I had subtitles on the copy of the film, so that I could understand what they were saying 50% of the time!)

Mean Creek
A poor film, which starts slow, gets better as it reaches the 40-minute mark, then gets poor again soon after. It is mildly entertaining and interesting at times, but has no real impact for the most part, the acting ranges from acceptable to poor, and on the whole is predictable and dull.

Seen "Speed" last night. Didn't think it was much cop despite all the people, well on IMDB.com, ranting and raving about it.

Also seen "Magnum Force" a few days ago. Dirty Harry is awesome. That is all.

Twelve Angry Men

What an incredible film. One of the simplest and greatest tales I've ever seen on film. The story is about 12 jurors who are set to decide whether a young punk kid is guilty of murdering his father, the film we see is them deciding guilty or not guilty. The story, the characters and the acting are so wonderful that it makes you wish every film was like this. It's so simple, yet so brilliant.

Saw

What a fucked up film this is. I was genuinely scared for about the first hour, the people that thought up the torture situations must be crazy. Did such a good job and scaring the freaking pants off you yet somehow made me desperate to see the sequel right away. Modern classic in the horror genre.

Brotherhood - brilliant Korean war movie about 2 brothers who get forced into fighting in the national war, this film shows how much war can fuck with people and just rip relationships apart...the battle scenes are awesome and the breakdown of the brothers plays out really well. The final scenes are heartbreaking, tears were rolling...

brilliant film!

Ooo, I saw that earlier this week too. Fucking pathetic, agreed. I then watched Football Factory. Absolute class, shows up Green Street for the piss that it is. I highly reccomend it.

Also saw Jarhead last night, really good movie. A break from the norm of guts and glory war movies. This movie has nearly no action in it, and instead relies on the characters as its focal point, instead of big battles etc. There's some beautiful cinematography aswell, especially in the oil fields.

Swingers- Really enjoyed this. Never really been a fan of Vince Vaughn but he and Faverau are tremendous in this film. I want to say Vaughn puts in a great acting performance, but i get the impression he's more being himself then palying his character to perfection. Every guy above 18 should really be able to relate to this film in some form. The scene where Faveraus character calls the chick who's number he recieved repeatedly moments after he arrives home is one of the most cringeworthy, frustrating scenes ever, you're just screaming out for him to stop, yet again you can totally relate to and understand what he's doing. The ending for me was a little flat, but nontheless a very enjoyable, amusing film. Swingers is money, so money.
Mr. Seven
The bit with the phone machine is very hard to watch I agree.

The ending, while abrupt, had me in stitches.

"Oh man I'm getting some crazy vibes from this chick, really weird shit."

Napoleon Dynamite after so much praise on here I'd thought it would be awesome, such a let down. Rubbish film.

Films I've watched recently, in brief:

Capricorn One. 1978 film, an oldie-but-goodie. Plot in one sentence - government fakes Mars landing.

Irreversible. An brilliant film, in that it aims to shock and disgust you, and achieves both successfully. I bought this and now I've seen it once really don't want to see it again. I can watch all kinds of Net video clips of skateboarders breaking their arms and all that stuff, but this (even though it's fictional) was worse than all of it. If you've seen it you'll know what I mean.

Saw a free showing of Memoirs of a Geisha on Thursday. Wasn't too impressed on the whole. It looked nice at times, and was mostly entertaining, but was too long at 145-minutes. The acting was acceptable, but nothing too good (which is a pity because the film has a good cast). It will win Oscars (mainly because that was why the film was made), but it was too much style and minimal heart really.

What a lot of ... fun ! I've always liked Nicholas Cage for some reason. It was a good film anyways, which was pretty much constantly moving.

Zombie Flesh Eaters - taken me so long to see this, and it was fucking wicked. My only gripe was the middle third of the film was a little pointless, too slow with not much going on, however the last half hour is gore-mania, some great shit going down. Also the zombie/shark battle is genius. Low budget goodness.
DJM
American Psycho
A great film, which is both interesting and strange (you are not sure what is reality and what is in Patrick Bateman’s mind). The movie has a good cast, with Christian Bale puts on a career making and career best performance as Patrick Bateman, while the rest of the cast all put in good performances as well. Dark, violent (even though the violence and killings take place off-screen), but also funny, you can see why American Psycho became and still is a cult classic.
(****)

American Psycho 2
An enjoyable film, which is a sequel to American Psycho in the very loosest of terms. It is fun and entertaining, and as its own film (and judged on its own merits) is not bad, but compared to the first American Psycho it is pretty poor. Also the writer of the film doesn’t seem to have watched or understood the original American Psycho, the movie has a basic plot, is more of a teen slasher than anything else, and is also silly and implausible at times. That said, American Psycho has a good young cast (and William Shatner), Mila Kunis is good in the main role, and on the whole it is short (just over 80-minutes) and harmless fun.
(**)

Cry_Wolf
The film is entertaining with an interesting idea, but has a basic script and average acting (Lindy Booth is the highlight of an under-used and un-tested cast, with Gary Cole really going to waste with the small role he is given), it is predictable for the most part, you know how each of the characters are going to die about 20-minutes into the film, the final plot twist and explanation is somewhat weak, and on the whole the film maybe tries to be too clever. It is about as good (and bloody) as you would expect from a 12A teen-slasher horror film, and is not all that bad for the limited budget and small cast used. In the end Cry_Wolf is an above average 12A horror film, which shows promise and ambition if nothing else.

Friday 13th Part 6 - Jason Lives - been banging in all the Friday 13th movies recently, this was one was pretty much a run of the mill slasher flick, Jason just obliterates campers for fun...not as gory as a few of the earlier films, pretty cool though, one of the poorer endings in the series too.

Friday 13th Part 7 - The New Blood - woooo, part 7...first hour is Jason slashing the fuck outta teenagers as usual, its kinda boring again the gore factor is low so you dont really get to see much. Then the last half hour is fucking awesome, Jason takes on the bird with telepathic powers or someshit and he gets the shit kicked outta him, burnt, roof on his head, nails in his face, hung, electrocuted, glassed, shot, drowned...it all happens in the last half hour and the guy keeps coming back for more. Brilliaint stuff, some peeps see this as the worst of the 10 (or 11 if you count Freddy Vs Jason) movies, for the first hour they could be right, but the last half is a fucking blast. Awesome!
HBAndy
Jarhead

Brilliant, the story was clever to do a war film without any action and you could sense that the makers were aiming for a high plateau of filmmaking. It's impossible not to evoke some emotions as you watch these characters go insane in the hot desert and are dying to kill something. It took me on a journey and it's based on a book thats a true story and that helps to understand the feeling that the character's are going through because it's true.

I really liked it.
