Jimmy Carr - Stand Up

having already seen the show live twice, i was buying more to add to my collection than expecting to enjoy the jokes as much third time around, but still had me in stitches!

A decent collection of extras and the 'Comedy Idol' feature is hilarious! The guy who does the song about Gene Hackman, and the guy who walked in with the notes written on his hand were easily better than the eventual winner, but a really awesome special feature, with a good running time too!

Not as good as 'Jimmy Carr Live' but that was a show far longer in the making, and definately an above average follow up.

Quantum Leap Series 1/2

Only 2 episodes into the second series so far, but i'm amazed at how well this programme has aged. I fucking adore this show, so far i've seen 18 episodes in total and not one that i've considered forwarding, skipping or lost concentration watching. My favourite series of any genre ever, and thats saying something considering that drama and sci fi are probably my least favourites, but i fall in love with this show over and over each time i watch it especially the early episodes where Sam is swiss cheesed, and cant remember details of his family, the phone call home, remembering his brother died in Vietnam, really tear jerking moments, in what is essentially a sub plot in the episodes in which they occur. I could talk for hours about this series.

Bill Bailey Cosmic Jam

Bit of a let down in all honesty, some top class musical comedy as ever, the starsky and hutch and cockney music skits are fucking brilliant, but his other material is far less, 'odd rambling weirdo' for which he's so popluar nowadays, and much more 'stoned festival going student' type stuff, although its not without its hilarious moments such as..

"so i wonder....who photographs Kebabs?"

Definately enough good, previously unseen stuff to make it worthwhile buying, especially considering you get a directors cut of bewilderness (a much better show) as an extra, but sadly not as strong as his most recent stuff. Understandable as it was early days, but those expecting something on par with Bewilderness or Part Troll may be a little dissapointed.

Neither.

If you must go to one, go to The Producers.

Yeh, The Producers is bad.

I haven't seen it, and I didn't like the original. I only suggested it because it looked more tolerable than the Ghost rip-off starring Greazy Reazy Witherspoon*.

I had to see that about 30 times when it came out due it to being on fucking repeat on the televisions at work.

Most downright offensively racist bit in the film?

Geeky White FBI Agent: "Sorry guys, we need to commandeer this vehicle."

Cool black guy #1: "Man I cannot believe we just got robbed by a white guy!"

Cool black guy #2: "We'll just say it was 75 black guys!"

Yes, because it's alright to have such "humour" now. Reverse it though, and that's racist.

And just so nobody gets confused, I'm not saying "Yes I want to be able to be racist thank you", I just hate the double-standards.

I presume this is a reference to Kevin Smith. I think he called her it after hearing she made some comment on his writing skills.

10 points to you good sir!
LaGoosh
It was a comment made in Kevin Smith's book 'Silent Bob Speaks' and is not only because she insulted his writing skills but also because she was rude to Joey Lauren Adams(Smiths then girlfriend) when she went to congratulate her for a recent performance.

Alone in the Dark
A poor film, with what could have been an entertaining and interesting story, but in the end is poorly filmed and seems like a made-for-TV or DTV movie. There is poor acting, a poor script, a bad (loud) soundtrack, and CGI which doesn’t fit into the film (the use of the CGI is too obvious). The viewer is given no reason to care for any of the characters, what they do during the film, or if they live or die in the end. Also there is no tension during the action scenes and no flow to the film. Stephen Dorff is a good actor, but picks bad films to star in (FeatDotCom!). Christian Slater looks like he doesn’t want to be in the film for the most part, and sounds half-asleep when doing his voice-overs throughout, while Tara Reid seemed drugged-up for the duration of the movie. It tries to be a cross between Alien, Doom, Tomb Raider, and Alien vs. Predator, but fails and ends up as easily one of the worst films of 2005.

The DVD extras are pretty good, and include a commentary by Director Uwe Boll, an 8-minute behind the scenes of Alone in the Dark (with Uwe Boll trying to tell himself that he made a good movie), a 9-minute visual effects featurette, a bullet time animatic, 6 music videos (with the Nightwish song the only good song out of the six), and the theatrical trailer.
(*)

Deathwatch
An enjoyable and entertaining film, which is somewhat violent and bloody, has some occasional dark humour, and an interesting story. Andy Serkis (Lord of the Ring & King Kong) is good and entertaining in his role as the crazy (lunatic) soldier, while everyone else is acceptable if mostly unimpressive in their roles. The downfalls to the film are that at times it can seem to be low budget, the film takes place in a limited area (i.e. the bunker), and not alot is explained in the end about what was actually going on (and you are left to figure it out yourself, and come to your own conclusions). An entertaining enough film, but at the end you are left feeling that the potential was never really reached, and a lot more could have been done with the story.

The DVD has some good extras, including 3 commentaries (from members of the cast and the director), 9-minutes of interesting deleted & alternate scenes, 14-minute of behind the scenes footage, a 13-minute featurette, 15-minutes of interviews with the cast and crew, and the theatrical trailer.
(**)

R-Point
An entertaining and enjoyable film, which is bloody at times, has some good looking and impressive scenery/sets, some occasional humour, and an interesting story. IT is somewhat confusing though, with nothing really explained in the end. There is also no real character development (most of the characters are one-dimensional) and therefore for the most part you cannot tell one soldier from another. The acting is pretty good, but most of the soldiers do seem to be over-acting for most of the movie. Not a bad film, and probably a little bit better on the whole than Deathwatch, but in the end you are left feeling that there was an interesting idea which was never really used to it’s full potential.

Just watched "Conspiracy Theory" with Mel Gibson and Julie Roberts there. Brilliant film.

Sounds gay but I always enjoy watching Gibson act. He is truly one of the most underrated actors out there. They way he plays the twitchy, paranoid role where he rambles to himself is tremendous.

"When the last sword is drawn"

Made in the style of 'Twilight Samurai' this film follows a samurai who's fallen on bad times and has left his home to earn money. He comes into the service of a powerful group of Samurai where he meets a man who hates everything around him. The story centers on their relationship while also focusing on the main character's slowly unraveling story.

This film has some amazing moments, and it actually makes you not like the main character for while before explaining why he does things the way he does and you grow to understand him and even respect him in a land that doesn't respect his way of life.

The main issue I had with this film is that it was a bit too long, they could've trimmed half an hour off the time and had a 'superb' film, instead there are some scenes that are too drawn out, also once in a while it's easy to get lost on the plot as 'remberance/dream' scenes aren't clearly marked.

But still it's a nice peice that you'll enjoy if you're into Japanese movies.

6.5/10

Indeed, but did you think they overdid it a bit with the car pulling funny faces and shit rather than old sly wink.

----------------

I watched "Wedding Crashers", which was fun but not as funny as I'd hoped and "Sahara" which I enjoyed quite a lot. Like a fusion on Indy and Bond and I thought McConaughey was a very good as he looked intelligent, but he'd also have you in a fight. If he can do a decent English accent he should have been the new Bond!

The Machinist

****May contain VERY VAGUE spoilers****

One of the best films i've seen in a long time!! I've gotten really into psycological thrillers recently and am a big Christian Bale fan, so i was drooling over the prospect of this one and i wasnt dissapointed.

Somewhat confusing at times, in its early stages the film seems to lack direction as it introduces you to the main charecters relationships with those around him, but nothing seems to stem from them, however things soon start to get interesting and what follows is a complicated journey into the mind of a man who after a year without sleep is a mental and physical wreck, tormented by an increased state of paranoia.

Its true that this film borrows elements from films like Fight Club and Memento, but its message is far more grounded and hard hitting than both movies and its closing moments make you realise that whilst the subject of the film is haunted by something of his past which you would normally frown upon, you have to feel for him, as his charecter is finally at peace.

All in all a well paced film with first class acting, two good twists, one of which is predictable, the other not so, beautifully shot and lit throughout and one of those which you are guaranteed to have to re-visit in order to understand some elements - i for one had to visit some spoiler sites for clarity on some parts, only to watch it again and appreciate it even more when more aware of what i was watching.

Watched Batman Begins tonight. Been putting it off for ages because Katie Holmes bugs me.
Enjoyable romp. Interesting cast. Wouldn't the microwave weapon effect the water in people's cells though?

Watched Heart Of The Dragon (AKA: The First Mission) last night. Twice. Once in Cantonese with subs, and once with Bey Logan's commentary. Much more enjoyable than the English dub.
Found the Easter Egg. It's the end credits from the Japanese release, and features an out-take of a stunt going horribly wrong.

Not only horribly underused, but also horribly under-introduced when you consider he's one of the less well known villains to the casual Batman viewer.

took advantage of my buy one get one free voucher from mcdonalds at blockbuster so i picked up these...

Shallow Ground - been wanting to see this for awhile, this could have been excellent, the actual idea is great..a blood covered boy enters a police station refuses to talk and all weird shit starts to go down. id say 75% of this was excellent, the actual ending kinda ruins it, it's good in theory but they dont quite pull it off...overall, if you fancy an origional kinda horror movie check this out, it aint your usual slasher flick. Look out for an excellent last scare too, which whilst it dont make much sense, is fucking wicked.

The Cave - i think most people are put of my this cause seeing it as a crappy version of The Descent (they both came out at roughly the same time), this is actually nowhere near as bad as i expected. The story is kinda similar to the Descent's but this film is more akin in feel to something like Alien Vs Predator, just dumb-ass fun film...worth a viewing.

Bey's commentaries are often better than the film itself. The best thing about them is the fact that it never sounds scripted or researched, it's basically Bey watching the movie and just rambling into a tape recorder whatever he thinks of, and yet it's never uninteresting.

I just watched King Kong, through rather illicit means it must be said, and I must say it was a helluva lot better than I thought it would be-I actually found myself laughing out loud at the 'every time she gets away from the dinosaur she gets thrown towards the other one' bit....and it definitely keep me thoroughly entertained throughout. Thought they got the 'humanity' of Kong out well too.

It's not going to be hailed as 'intelligent cinema' but its still a very nice looking film

The Nest
A great action movie, which takes alot from Assault on Precinct 13, but still manages to be better than most similar action films coming out of Hollywood. The movie has a great premise, believable characters, and good acting by all of the main cast. It is not a dialog-heavy movie, but is still easy to follow and understand, with a good build-up in the first 30-minutes of the film, of the main characters to be used in the rest of the movie. It also has great action scenes (violent, bloody, exciting), and some good special effects. Similar in part to films like Assault on Precinct 13, SWAT, Transporter, Die Hard, and even Night of the Living Dead.

The DVD extras seem at first glance to be limited, but they include 6-minutes of deleted scenes (with comments by the director), a very interesting and in-depth 52-minute Making of Featurette, and the theatrical trailer.

Watched Pay It Forward last night.

I quite enjoyed it, in parts. The premise and story was nice and seemed like it could have gone to very exciting places if they had passed the story along through each person who was touched by Pay It Forward and it would have made for a more interesting film.

The ending sucked balls and making Haley Joel Osmont out as a Jesus figure was a joke. Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt were good in it but I was more interested in Pay It Forward than their relationship and her drinking habits.

Tried to pull on every heartstring it could but just made the film seem a bit of a joke in doing so.

The Devil's Rejects

The sequel to the absolutely dreadful House Of 1000 Corpses. I was ready to hate this, but I ended up not hating it and almost liking it. It's a much better film than House, from structure to character development, to the overall look of the film. The film looks incredible, every frame is stylish and rich looking. Top marks there. The soundtrack is also excellent and William Forsythe's performance as the sheriff out for justice is brilliant.

That said, there are some serious problems. I honestly think Zombie wanted us to empathise and support the band of ruthless serial killers, but no fucking way was that happening. Their characters aren't likeable rebels, they're vicious killers and I was cheering on the sheriff in his quest for blood.

A few scenes drag on way too long, DDP and Danny Trejo's characters weren't used enough, but the thing that pissed me off the most...

I got Ong-bak and Oldboy as Christmas presents:

Ong-bak was just amazing! It just pisses all over every martial arts movie I have ever seen (even The Blade - which I thought was untouchable) This is exactly how all kung-fu movies should be - simple storyline and eye-popping action all the way, Tony Jaa is outstandingly talented and if he doesn't become a legend it will be an unspeakable travesty. The fact that he's incredibly good-looking is a huge bonus!

Oldboy - there is only one word I can think of to describe this film: Stunning. I adored every single uncomfortable moment. It's so rare to find a film that has such an interesting protaganist and don't even get me started on the villain! However, if you're of a squeemish disposition then don't watch it - tis rather heavy-going!

I love the way i was swinging between liking and disliking some of the characters. Pete, for example, came in in the first scene he's in and he's a loudmouth prick. Then by the middle, and he's somebody thats followed, he mellows out towards Matt.

Elijah Wood. Originally i thought 'what the fuck', to this choice, but it's perfect. Sure, we know he's a wimp. Thats why it works.

The final fight scene was immense. The main fight of Pete and Tommy, and then when he brings up the death of Tommy's kid...

It was shit, and crucially for a comedy, not funny at all. Rachel McAdams is gorgeous and Isla Fisher was both hot and amusing, but the whole thing was just... I dunno, pointless. The Characterisations are fantastic and the relationships between the two different castes really makes you wonder how anyone got by in those times, Well worth watching if you haven't seen it already. It's easy to see how he inspired so many other directors.

I found it to be a funny film, with the five main cast members all pulling their weight to make it a good film. One of the better comedy films of last year, and the DVD came a couple of days ago so I will have to watch it again soon. But if you didn't enjoy it then fair enough, maybe it is not for everyone...

Devour
An entertaining if very unspectacular film, with an interesting premise. It starts off pretty good, but as the film progresses the overall quality drops. There is a good young cast, and mostly good acting, but the script doesn’t really seem to challenge them. It is somewhat bloody at times, and includes an Ichi The Killer/Oldboy style tongue-cutting scene (but for no real reason though). In the end the interesting premise is never really used to its full potential, and there is a somewhat silly and unsatisfying ending that leaves the viewer with too many questions left unanswered. A watchable film, but could and should have been so much better.
(**)

Doppelganger (Region 1)
Doppelganger is a strangely entertaining film, but is also slow with no real spark or purpose. The movie has an interesting idea, but the film never really seems to go anywhere. The film also looks low budget for the most part, with one special effect in particular looking terrible (a van hits someone, and it is blatantly obvious that the van hits a mannequin instead!). It does gets better as it progresses (past the 40-minute mark), but the soon slows down again before getting better again in the last 20-minutes or so. The camera angles and filming is clever (and looks good) when the same actor is on screen at the same time (playing the character & his Doppelganger), and there is some occasional good dark humour, but in the end I was left wondering what it was I had just watched, and why I had continued to watch it till the end!

There are some limited but pretty good DVD extras, including a 20-minute Making of Featurette, a 5-minute interview with the Director, and some trailers.
(**)

Anchorman
A very good, funny film, full of some great & memorable quotable lines. The four main cast members are very good in their roles (especially Steve Carell as Brick), Baxter the Dog is great, and there are some great cameos (including Vince Vaughn, Jack Black, Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins, Danny Trejo, Missi Pyle, Jerry Stiller, Neil Flynn). The battle between the five news teams is also great, there are some pretty good outtakes over the end credits, and all in all everyone in the film just seemed to be having fun.

Some good DVD extras, including a Cast Commentary, 8-minutes of bloopers, The Making of Anchorman, “Afternoon Delight” Music Video, A Conversation with Ron Burgundy, Ron Burgundy at the MTV Movie Awards, ESPN Audition, deleted scenes, and trailers.

Secret Window
An enjoyable film, which for the most part is similar to The Dark Half. Somewhat predictable at times, but still entertaining enough viewing. Johnny Depp is very good (as usual) in the main role of Mort, while the rest of the cast (including Maria Bello & John Turturro) are also good with the roles they are given to play. Not the most original film, nothing that hasn’t been done before, and not the most challenging script for the actors, but still an enjoyable 90-minutes viewing.

Some good extras on the DVD, including a Directors Commentary, 4 deleted/extended scenes, 3 lengthy Featurettes, 3 Animatics, and a handful of trailers.

Bone Daddy
A good, mostly interesting film, with a pretty good story. It is short at 84-minutes, has no real impact or spark on the whole, and the ending (when you find out who the killer was) is somewhat flat, but Rutger Hauer is good (in the main part) and there is just enough to keep the viewer interested for the duration.

Stander

Thomas Jane stars as a South African Police Captain who gets a bit pissed off and decides to rob banks. True Story. Very Good film.
