Digest, as I'm lazy tonight:
Sure Tom Hanks is great as that gay guy with AIDs and Denzel Washington is great as the lawyer who changes from homophobe to poof-apprecative, but is the film anything more than a dry courtroom drama which drags on for too long and show little of the human aspect of a terrible affliction / national attitude? In a word no it is not. And the film suffer tremendously because of it.

I watched Caddyshack for the first time, a few months ago and though it was okay. I dont understand why it is praised so much.
Rodney Dangerfield is great in it though, he stole the show with ease.
Caddyshack gets funnier everytime you see it.

His repartee with Chevy Chase in their only scene together is fucking goldmine. Also, his monologue about the Dalai Lama (most of which, if not all was improvised) is classic. I think, as far as pure comedic roles go, it's one of Murray's best.
I'd like to bum Bill a lot too.
Disturbia was decent and worth watching but don't expect a really good film!

Sunshine Really good sci-fi film. In the future the sun starts to die so a team are sent up to send a bomb of some kind into the sun to reignite it..things go wrong, people die and they encounter a crazy Russian. Worth watching.
Simpsons MoviePretty good, I liked the story and I loved Hank Scorpio vol II. I'm not a fan of recent years of The Simpsons but this was pretty damn solid from start to finish.
The Reaping Crap religious horror. Should have been better.
Marabunta This is the only film that has ever made me want to put a comment up on IMDB about it - I'll paste it in here. I first watched it in Jan 2004 but it has been on Sky Horror/Sci Fi recently and I've recorded it and put it on a DVD so I watched it again on Tuesday. If you love bad disaster films, you NEED to see this.

That reminds me of the ending to Broken Flowers, it still annoys me. I thought the ending to Lost in Translation was lazy, but Broken Flowers took the piss.

Just watched A Guide To Recognising Your Saints, which I'd reccommend to pretty much anyone. It's kinda like Kids meets A Bronx Tale, but is easily a better film than both. Shia LaBeouf gains more credibility in the semi-lead role, the other lead being his older self, played by the always interesting Robert Downey Jr. It's pretty bleak and depressing, but very powerful.

The Condemned - WWE film starring Steve Austin....basically a remake of Battle Royale, its completely stupid and over the top but it was entertaining. The kinda movie you'd find scrolling through the movie channels late at night and just leave on. Austin isn't particularly good but he looks the part.

anyway, it's been discussed many a time on this board, but having now finally seen it I would just like to say that Clerks 2 sucks balls unremittingly.
It had a couple funny bits, but even as a standalone film, ignoring the fact that it pisses on the legacy of a great film, it was still not even passable.
I saw "School for Scoundrels" the other night. It was alright... no masterpiece, but it was pretty damn funny in places, and didn't make me cringe ashamedly for watching it like Clerks II. Sarah Silverman was fucking annoying, though.
I watched Notes on A Scandal yesterday. I thought it was brilliant. Has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?
Bloodrayne - oooooooooooooooh, my first Uwe Boll movie. This fucker's sitting in bottom #100 on imdb, which is surely down to the fact that it's fashionable to bash Boll cause, this wasn't all that bad. 90 mins of silly vampire slaying action. The sets, costumes and all that shit was upmarket stuff. Gore aplenty too. It aint ever gonna win any awards but it aint nowhere near as bad as Boll haters would have you believe. Oh, gotta add...Michael Madsen puts in the most phoned-in performance ive ever seen.

Much more faithful to the original than I expected, apart from the rather long opening and the ending. They kept things relatively simple between them points. Not a bad remake, but the whole exercise seemed a bit pointless to me. Still, the kid who played a young Michael Myers was rather good, it has to be said. The older version was a bit of a beast as well. Overall, I didn't feel like turning it off like I did with The Wicker Man's remake. Not worth going out of your way to see.

I watched this the other day as well and I totaly agree. It realy wasn't the type of film Id normaly watch, but it felt so 'real' that for 2 hours I almost forgot I was actualy watching a film and just got caught up in these kids lives. Very good film.
I also watched Dead Mans Shoes, very powerful as well. It'll make you feel very angry at times, as well as making you realy feel for the characters. Being British theres some recognisable personalities that'll realy help you connect with the film. The ending was very well done, even if the twist was a little obvious.
Was going to start another thread for this but anyway.....today I watched The Condemmed with SCSA and the UK's own Vinnie Jones.

Recently bought "Played" (2006) starring, Vinnie Jones, Val Kilmer, Patsy Kensit, Gabriel Byrne, Steve Jones (Of The Sex Pistols) and many other big names. Despite the film having absolutely no budget, the makers pulled together an allstar cast and a rather decent film. Great low-budget gangster film that I would recommend to any fans of Snatch/Layer Cake etc.

It's very good but the last shot of the film is extremely detrimental to everything that has come before.
Pathfinder - this movie was critically panned when it was released but i dunno why i had a feeling id like it...plot? fuck the plot, its basically a bunch of Vikings coming to an island/country and going on a mass slaughter spree, yet a stray Viking from years back who got left behind fights back and helps the natives. Its totally silly on the acting front and the script is fucked but it's a 90 minute gorefest, and visually it's fantastic...i fucking loved it.
Saw Knocked Up yesterday...its bloody well great! An awesome, well rounded comedy.

1408 is actually supposed to be pretty good though.
It was more a comment on his taste in films.
The workprint of Halloween is a completely different cut to the one that's going out theatrically. It doesn't include any of the heavy reshoots and supposedly contains a lot of stuff that's been cut.

If I ever see Tobey Maguire dancing again it'll be too soon.
That scene where he danced down the street was even worse than the one in the bar.
Other thoughts:
They turned MJ turned into a sulky bitch.
I didn't really understand why Sandman wanted to kill Spiderman.
As much as Parker's goodytwoshoes hairstyle annoys me, the emo style was worse. They even had him do the South Park emo hair flick!
The CGI was a bit dodgy in parts.
Is Spiderman unbreakable? There were a couple of scenes where he was really getting his ass kicked and never had a scratch on him afterwards.
Good start, decent ending..meh middle. Worth watching though.

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas - Criterion edition. I'm sure many have seen this and no doubt love it as do I so its more the actual DVD that I think is worth talking about. What I would like to say is that the first 60 minutes are amazing. Really engrossing and very funny with countless quotable lines. For some reason once Dr Gonzo leaves on the plane at around 60 mins in I always seem to detach from the film slightly when compared to how engrossed I am to start with. That is not to say that the latter half is not great, because it is also funny and inventive but I really feel like its running out of steam.
I’ve only seen the film 2 or 3 times so I'm not as familiar with it as I am with others so maybe I will grow to enjoy the latter as much as the 1st half, who knows. Depp is quite frankly astonishing as the Duke, bringing such a eccentric character so articulately to life is something to be proud of, as I'm sure many lesser actors would put too much or themselves into the part or just have it turned ham fistedly into a cartoon. Instead his portrayal of Hunter S Thompson is uncanny and commendable.
Now onto the DVD, if I had only seen the film and had other 1st hand experience of Thompson then it would be easy to think that Depps performance was entirely of his own creation with an actor using his own artistic license to portray a semi fictional character. But on the DVD in a 50 minute 1970's BBC documentary called Fear and Loathing on the way to Hollywood it becomes clear that the film version entirely faithful to the real life man of the 70's. Only just like characters in wrestling he has been turned up ever so slightly. I don’t know about how others would take it but I found it fascinating watching and comparing the two versions of Thompson. Also in the documentary you get the distinct impression that if a camera crew was not with him he could have got just as crazy as in the film.
There are 3 audio commentaries one by Thompson himself. I am yet to watch any of them but I’m really looking forward to it. The DVD has a great selection of extras which includes the usual trailer, TV spot deleted scene and storyboard type of stuff. The stuff that makes the discs special is as well as the previously mentioned doc there are a few really great extras.
- A selection of Hunter S Thompson’s correspondence with Johnny Depp, read on camera by Depp. Great stuff. They are clearly quite mad.
- Excerpt from the 1996 Fear and Loathing audio cd.
- Hunter Goes to Hollywood - A short doc following Hunter onto the set of Fear & Loathing and shooting his cameo.
- Oscar Zeta Acosta rare materials - This my favourite feature as it gives insight into the man who was the basis for the Dr Gonzo character and it includes a reading Acosta did on TV in the 70’s at a rally, where he reads a chapter from his book Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo. I really enjoyed this, its simultaneously sad and frightening. Watching him break down towards the end nearly brought me to tears.
Unlike with Thompson, Acosta does not come across even vaguely like his alta ego Dr Gonzo from the film and its very interesting / perplexing where this character could have come from. After viewing/reading all the supplemental material on Acosta it is apparent he was a very complex man who was simultaneously a drug crazed nut and a thought provoking activist. It is a shame Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas only shows the crazy side of him. I haven’t read the book so I assume Dr Gonzo is shown in this light as well?
All in all this is a great DVD but it was expensive and is old. Back when Criterion made it I have no doubt it was one of the best DVDs available but now it could do with a slight overhaul. My main complaint is it does not have a making of documentary, which it sorely needs. If a new edition was released over here and contained all these extras and a new disc with a well made documentary it would be easily up there with the best DVDs available. With Thompson having died in the years since its release it would be interesting to get thoughts on him and his passing in a retrospective as well. But hey we will have to wait and see.
If you could get the DVD at a reasonable price then I would recommend this DVD to anyone over the vanilla edition available in the UK. However because it is so damn expensive only big fans should consider it. I’m happy as hell I forked out for it but I’m not sure everyone would.
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas - Criterion edition. I'm sure many have seen this and no doubt love it as do I so its more the actual DVD that I think is worth talking about. What I would like to say is that the first 60 minutes are amazing. Really engrossing and very funny with countless quotable lines. For some reason once Dr Gonzo leaves on the plane at around 60 mins in I always seem to detach from the film slightly when compared to how engrossed I am to start with. That is not to say that the latter half is not great, because it is also funny and inventive but I really feel like its running out of steam.
I’ve only seen the film 2 or 3 times so I'm not as familiar with it as I am with others so maybe I will grow to enjoy the latter as much as the 1st half, who knows. Depp is quite frankly astonishing as the Duke, bringing such a eccentric character so articulately to life is something to be proud of, as I'm sure many lesser actors would put too much or themselves into the part or just have it turned ham fistedly into a cartoon. Instead his portrayal of Hunter S Thompson is uncanny and commendable.
Now onto the DVD, if I had only seen the film and had other 1st hand experience of Thompson then it would be easy to think that Depps performance was entirely of his own creation with an actor using his own artistic license to portray a semi fictional character. But on the DVD in a 50 minute 1970's BBC documentary called Fear and Loathing on the way to Hollywood it becomes clear that the film version entirely faithful to the real life man of the 70's. Only just like characters in wrestling he has been turned up ever so slightly. I don’t know about how others would take it but I found it fascinating watching and comparing the two versions of Thompson. Also in the documentary you get the distinct impression that if a camera crew was not with him he could have got just as crazy as in the film.
There are 3 audio commentaries one by Thompson himself. I am yet to watch any of them but I’m really looking forward to it. The DVD has a great selection of extras which includes the usual trailer, TV spot deleted scene and storyboard type of stuff. The stuff that makes the discs special is as well as the previously mentioned doc there are a few really great extras.

I just HAD to wait for this to download so as I could watch it. It's ... well, lets say un-nerving. The characters are all a bit unhinged. Well, not ALL of them. Most of them though. Even ones who don't see unhinged when you first meet them begin to unravel. There's one character in particular though who has a scene that is just god awful to watch. The last line of the scene was just pure horror. I'm not going to watch it again. Not because it's a bad movie, but there's just too much of it that I don't want to watch again. I DO recommend it though. Looking at it, it's fucking terrific. Anything that can get the emotions running like Happiness did for me deserves some credit. Just be prepared for a pretty harrowing ride at times.

Looking at yesterday newspapers and noticed that "The Queen" film was on ITV1. A bit quick to be on TV.

The same thing happened with Terminator 3. It found its way on FIVE out of the blue (I think it was a year after it was released aswell!

My girl ended up chosing this one over 1408 (surprisingly!). It was OK. Not as bad as some of the reviews its been getting.. but not that great either.
Most of it was an exact rewrite of Taxi Driver... especially the last 15 minutes or so! I dont know if thats what was intended.. but some of the scenes looked like an identical copy.
Kevin Bacon was pretty good.. but I dont think I'd ever be able to see him in the same way since he starred in The Woodsman!

I watched this again yesterday (probably for the 3rd time).. and even though I know all the jokes.. its still just hilarious!! Seth Rogen is fastly becoming my favourite actor at the moment.

The Queen: My first thought was that not getting an actress to play Diana was a very bold decision on the part of the director. Footage of the real people (Diana, Bill Clinton, mourners at Kensignton Palace) dispersed with actors gives it an edge of authenticity and realism that a lot of biopics lack. I know Mirren got a lot of praise, and deservedly so, but Michael Sheen is good as Tony Blair. If I did have one complaint though, it was that the film tries to make Blair too much of a good guy. Like he's the knight in shining armour that single handely saves the royal family out of the goddness of his heart. When in real life he had strong political motives for helping them, and his speeches about the "people's princess" were mostly from the pen of Alistar Campbell trying to exploit the public hysteria.
I enjoyed it, and as always Prince Philip (James Cromwell) gets the best lines.
Oh, and all you Diana fans on the UKKF (yeah, right) will pleased to know there's a big movie biopic of her life being planned for 2008. Lindsay Lohan wants the part. Seriously.
