Lets discuss heavy metal

stuff gets mentioned in the 'albums listened too' thread, but i think we should have a place dedicated to the metal.
been listening to a lot of Soulfly recently. Max Cavalera is pretty much the reason i listen to metal, i was a massive Sepultura fan back in the day.
I completely lost interest in Soulfly though, i owned the debut and really liked Primitive, but after that i lost interest. It was around the time where i started getting into hardcore and stuff, and Soulfly didn't appeal to me (i think i got sucked into the underground thing a bit, im over that shit). Ive listened to the last 3-4 Soulfly albums briefly, but i never gave em much attention.
Going back on the albums though, i'm fucking loving em, dunno why it's just clicking with me. Makes me wanna go back and bust out the Chaos AD and Roots, Sepultura albums.
Any Soulfly fans?

I was always more into Sepultura, especially after seeing them at Donnington Monsters of Rock with Pantera, Dog Eat Dog (Whatever happened to them?), Extreme?!?! and Aerosmith Headlining, if I remeber right I think Fear Factory were on the bill and Skin (Wonder what happened to all of them after the split, although I preferred their incarnation as Jagged Edge) and Biohazard (Getting the power turned off as they invited everyone onto the stage) on the second stage. Good times.

been listening to way to much Behemoth. their albums seem to get better and better. I am praying for a new dvd. I love live dvds with backstage stuff, its just cool seeing bands fuck about.
going to see man must die,Kataklysm and Decapitated (although its a whole new band apart from Vogg on guitars) on monday in lodon. i m really looking forward to it. never seen any of the bands before. not heard much from Kataklysm, have a few decapitated albums and have both man must die albums. I saw a youtube video of decapitated before in birmingham they sounded awesome should be a good gig.
Decapitated Livedoesn't seem to be many good gigs coming up. I only have the above gig and Machine Head,Hatebreed,Bleeding Through and Man Must Die (All Shall Perish have pulled out) Gig
alot of people seem to think metal isn't for christains. well check these guys out. they even played a gig at a church
Impending Doom
i'm going to see Decapitated/Kataklysm tonight in Bristol. Looking forward to it, it's basically a re-incarnation of Decapitated, the band lost frontman Covan after he was seriously injured in a band van accident (drumming legend Vitek was killed in the accident

) so this was put together by Vitek's brother Vogg to help continue the Decapitated sound.
I did manage to see Decapitated on the Organic Hallucinosis tour though, it was wicked but it was a case of the venue being so loud that the intricacies of their playing kinda got lost in the sound, haha. They are the kind of band that benefit from a real solid sound mix.
Kataklsym are fucking great! saw them at Bloodstock in '08 and they fucking flattened the place, awesome. Can't wait to see them.

yeh, ive got that album. I still ain't listened to that properly either. I know it's a slight more throwback to the pre-Chaos AD Sepultura days. I'll get it on.
I'm a fan of the new Sepultura too, although i skimmed over a few of the newer albums as well. Slacking! it's hard to believe how many albums Sepultura/Soulfly have put out since they split.

I'm off to Metal camp this year for the first time. Although there seems to be a few too many 'power metal' and 'folk metal' bands atm. But Immortal headlining, can't wait!
Still listening to Mastodon - Crack The Skye (if that counts as metal?!) more than any other album. I don't think i will ever tire of listening to it.
I still have to say, Master Of Puppets by Metallica is by far the best album i've ever heard. That was the album that got me into metal.

Not just FFDP but also his previous work with MotoGrater & Ghost Machine.
Did anybody catch the Pantera tribute covers CD that Metalhammer released last year? Evile's cover of Cemetary Gates blew me away.

5FDP's 1st album i didn't like to much but the new one is awesome. I reckon it will be the third album that will make or break them. they where good live on the lamb of god, dimmu borgir and unearth show i saw them at.
Pantera cd was ok. enjoyed Unearh,Machine Head and Chimaira where good.
anyone else not got into the new/latest chimaira album? the infection? I love The impossility of reason and the self title album/Resurrection where good albums but the latest one i was always waiting for the songs to kick in.
Not really the best of the best black metal line up but a damn good one Ov Hell will be the next album i buy. have a listen to the song on their myspace.
the line up is:
Vocals-Shagrath(Dimmu Borgir)
Bass-King(Gorgoroth)
Guitar-Ice Dale (Enslaved)
Guitar-Teloch(God Seed)
Drums-Frost(1349 and Satyricon)

Sepultura... ah 1996 December .. Newport.. Awesome... best gig I have ever been to. Period
Floodgate and Strife in Support , all on stage plus Benji (Skindred/Dubwar) all kinds of orgasmic win!
Portsmouth with derick and Psychore.. Rawk like a mofo!
lost count of the gigs ive seen ..
I think the only bands left I want to see live are Metallica, Pitchshifter and Terrorvision.. and the only reason I havent seen them are cancellations for what ever reason

Currently resurging in Metal, well, Brit rock... Left Side Brain anyone.. and awaiting the Kerbog tribute as well!
ahhhh been listening to Soulfly, Celtic Frost, and LSB

classic! Floodgate's 'Penalty' album is a true underrated classic metal album.
I've seen Metallica, Pitchshifter & Terrorvision, all numerous times...dont mean to rub it in

and... i'm a Left Side Brain fan too! i own the first two albums, i ain't really listened to the newest one (Collider?), but i'll check it...they love the riffs.
i'm sure we were seperated at birth
as for 5 Finger Death Punch... i don't understand the hype at all. They kinda sound like they would have been massive 10 years ago. Now i've got nothing against nu-metal but 5FDP just seemed to have missed the boat.
It seems like only Metal Hammer are creaming over 'em over here, but the band seem to be doing ok...i don't see the appeal.

would be awesome if rob zombie was there. not that i'm going but i do like his new album after the last one its a lot better. just got halloween 2 today so i m going to watch it later. I actually like his movies. house of 1000 corpse was really good up to the bit with dr satan at the end, devils rejects was better and Halloween 1 wasn't that bad. I enjoyed seeing micheal as a child

The secret is, try not to compare it to the rosy memories you have of the original couple of Halloween movies.
If you look at it as a fresh horror movie, it's a good watch.

I'd love to see Rob Zombie at Donington this year. I'm suprised this hasn't turned into a slagging match over what and what isn't metal (or mallcore) but I'm glad that it hasn't. I like a pretty large chunk of heavy metal, takes up the biggest part of my music collection and taste. My favourite Metal band, and favourite band in general, is Metallica. I've seen them 17 times (with 4 more coming, 5 if they do Download) all round the world and have pretty much everything Metallica you could possibly have. I finally met them last year and they're great guys, its especially interesting to meet them as they are now compared to how they were when I was growing up watching them.
I'll also add to the Sepultura love, never been a big fan of Soulfly or Max in gerneral otherwise but they have some fucking awesome tunes.

There's a few metal bands i've never really 'got'. Metallica being one (Iron maiden being another, there are several more). So i thought i'd ask, give me say 3 songs of Metallica's that will convert me. I have listened to plenty of them i guess, but i don't own aything by them.
My top 3 Metallica songs:
1) Fade To Black
2) Battery
3) Blackened
Now, I'm not sure if that'll convince you to like Metallica but Fade To Black's the song that got me into them with Battery as a firm favourite behind it. I'm guessing you're familiar with the bigger hits too.

Ooh, fun.
My picks are gonna be -
1)Master of Puppets
2)Harvester of Sorrows
3)Call of Ktulu

4) The Four Horsemen
5) And Justice For All
6) Ride The Lightning
7) No Leaf Clover
8) Seek and Destroy
9) Creeping Death
10) Whiplash.
And as for Iron Maiden, They are one of my favourite bands so i would recommend some albums as every song on them is great....
1) Powerslave
2) Dance of Death
3) Brave New World
4) Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
5) Somewhere In Time
Anyone else feel the Maiden love? Or am i acting like a fanboy?
right 3 songs then for recommending
3 Metallica songs, mmm stepping away from the norm
1. Welcome Home (Sanatarium)
2. To Live is to Die
3. Outlaw Torn
3 Maiden Songs, again off the beaten path
1. Strange World (soundhouse tapes version)
2. Montsegur
3. Children of the Damned.
Ebb.. We are the Zeitgeist MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! erm lol either that or wor parents have some explaining to do

My gig days are over at the moment, so Terrorvision, Pitchshifter and Tallica are out of reach. Plus 40 quid and more is a bit fucking steep, bring back 8-14 quid, I can do that. 40 quid for a 2 hour gig (or less) FUCK off.

2. The Four Horsemen
3. Blackened
That kinda changes about a few times a month.

Blackened and One are always there or thereabouts though. Maiden though ...
1. Hallowed Be Thy Name
2. Moonchild
3. Phantom of the Opera
Much more consistant actually. I think they've been my favourite Maiden songs for yonks.

'Tallica:
For Whom the Bell Tolls
One
Disposable Heroes
Maiden:
Recorded:
The Trooper
Powerslave
Aces High
2 Minutes to Midnight
Sunlight on Steel
Running Free
However there are some tracks that you need to experience live if you want to appreciate them fully. Foremost are Fear of the Dark and Hallowed be Thy Name.
Anyway...
At the moment I'm listening to a lot of Deicide. Bastard of Christ, Father Baker's, Bible Basher, Scars of the Crucifix and The Gift that Keeps on Giving are on heavy rotation.
I'm also enjoying a lot of Sabbat and Skyclad at the moment. Really enjoy the depth of some of the lyrics.
Melechesh are fucking awesome. They tend to be labelled as black metal, but they're not really. They have that raspy vocal style, but there the similarity ends. Catchy death metal heavily influenced by Middle Eastern music - much more so than Nile.

Three Metallica (that people haven't mentioned yet)
The Memory Remains - great on disc, AWESOME live.
All Nightmare Long - the second best 'new' song behind The Day That Never Comes.
Devil's Dance - I've yet to see any love for this. Why the hell not? it's easy to listen to, heavy and evil. Both the album and S&M versions deserve at least one listen each.

Last year i really started getting into both Katatonia and Opeth, both really great bands with several great albums.
Today i had a listen to Entombed - Left hand Path cos i hadnt listened to it in ages and it's really very good!
So the Metallica stuff. I've been at work allevening so havent listened to much. One and Nothing Else Matters are 2 songs i actually already liked. Fucking yes. Fantastic band even though i've only heard one of their albums (Djinn). I saw them live last summer at Hellfest and they were phenomenal, been meaning to buy more of their material.
Anyone into pagan black metal? If so check out Askival. His album, Eternity, has since become one of my favourites of all time and by far my most played on last fm. As a nationalist Scotsman it really resonates me, with its themes of a return to paganism and independence and etc. The music is superb too, amazing it was created by one man. So yeah guys check it out!
Also going through yet another Summoning phase. Nothing beats a bit of Tolkien influenced epic/atmospheric black metal to do a bit of my uni reading to, not to mention sitting alone with a beer being drawn increasingly into the hypnotic and beautiful soundscapes. Another band you should all check out if you like (nerdy) music with soul.
Gig wise, saw Decapitated and Marduk in Glasgow this week and both were great. Decapitated were especially crazy with the whole floor being a mass of circle bits, crowdsurfers and stagedivers. Plus at Marduk, Nemetheanga made an appearance which reduced me to a squealing fanboy. Always been a massive Primordial fan.

Probably a very thin minority. While metal specific forums I frequent absolutely fellate this band, I have Mechanized Warfare and while it's decent, it's nothing mind-blowing and a "OMG BEST BAND EVER!" that people seem to give this band.
In semi-Panzer related news, the new Nevermore drops on April 1st and I am shitting bricks in anticipation for the Godliness that is going to be unleashed. I of course bring up Nevermore due to the Panzer guitarist being used live a few years ago.

Fade To Black (my personal fave)
Master of Puppets
Creeping Death
That Was Just Your Life
2x4
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Shortest Straw
Fuel
The Unforgiven
The Day That Never Comes
Sad But True
Hit the Lights
And some Maiden as I'm a huge fan also:
Aces High
Murders in the Rue Morgue
Hallowed be thy Name
Wrathchild
Paschendale
Ghost of the Navigator
The Legacy
