all the pop-punk these days seem to be from bands like A Day To Remember, All Time Low, Blitz Kids, You Me At 6 etc. I couldn't recommend any tunes because i dont really know what any of them sound like, but i read about them in magazines all the time. I'm the kind of person who stays upto date in print, but not in actual listening huh.gif

Whenever i goto rock clubs (which is rare these days) they still play the same tired shit from the 90's...decent tunes granted, but System of a Down did have tunes other than Chop Suey.

Cheers will go seek

Thats a major gripe of mine. DJ's selections at most rock clubs/nights are incredibly lazy.

Chop Suey
Down With The Sickness
Freak On A Leash
Party Hard
Break Stuff
Killing In The Name
Welcome To The Jungle
Voodoo People

Are all always played in the last couple of hours at every club night in Aberdeen. sleeping.gif

Wouldnt mind if any of these were actually played, they weren't.. Definitely a Senior Moment.. Its not about getting down with the kids, its more a case of WTF is that?

This is why i've stopped going to club nights in Cov, same DJ playing the same music for the past 8 or so years. The only thing that has changed is the clientele which seems to be a load of trendy kids dancing to this music as it's apparently "ironic" to do so.

Onto the topic on Black Metal, i've totally fallen out with the genre these past couple of years to the point i can't even listen to the classic albums. The whole idea of the ideology of the bands along with god awful production is a total turn off whereas years ago it was a major factor of me liking it. Thank fuck for Post-BM and guys like Neige/Tursy and Garm etc either moving away from the genre or doing something better with it.

I'd very highly recomend Dopamine from China, they haven't released much but from what they have it's amazing, easily on par with the more famous bands like Alcest. A Forest of Stars are worth a look as well, they seem to be getting pushed like crazy by Prophecy Records for thier next album.

Lantlôs are a must-listen band, Neige has got his greasy little paws into them for the latest album but that's certainly not a bad thing.

I'd also recommend getting the compilation "The World Comes To An End In The End Of A Journey" as it has a ton of great bands including Dopamine, was in my top albums of 09.

Absolutely gutted, I wonder what made him want to quit when they are jacking it in after this tour anyway? It won't be same seeing them without KK.

Nevermore have lost two members. Guitarist Jeff Loomis and drummer Van Williams have left to pursue other projects.

from totalrock.com

massive blow to the band, Jeff Loomis is one of the top metal guitar players around. Wonder what this means for the future of Nevermore, or if Warrell Dane will just go i alone with a second solo album
JonnyMiller
Warrel has said Nevermore is not dead. However, his main focus just now is writing the new Sanctuary and his 2nd solo record. Totally gutted about Jeff and Van leaving.

Gotta say it's been a crappy couple of days with KK leaving Priest, Roy officially leaving Kamelot and now the backbone of one of my favourite bands in Nevermore leaving.

"There has been an ongoing breakdown in working relationship between myself, elements of the band, and the band's management for some time. Therefore I have decided to step down rather than to tour with negative sentiments as I feel that this would be a deception to you, our cherished fans. I recently bought Converge - No Heroes and Stampin Ground - A new Darkness Upon Us for a pound each at a car boot sale. The guy had loads of metal cds but unfortunately most i already had. Both albums i really liked.

Also bought the new Skindred album (signed from Play), which i think is probably their best album and the closest they've got to there live sound.

The early 70's albums all show how influential Judas Priest were on metal, particularly British metal, bands to follow, 'Sad Wings Of Destiny' and 'Sin After Sin' are prob the best of the 70's album. 1980 saw 'British Steel' released, which in my opinion is one of the greatest metal albums ever made. Further listening from the 80's era include 'Screaming For Vengeance' and 'Defenders Of The Faith'.

On top of all those, you've got the 'Painkiller' album when Scott Travis got behind the drumstoll, and even the Tim 'Ripper' Owens albums ('Jugulater' and 'Demolition') have their moments

ahhh i need to find a bootsale with someone selling off their entire collection...i get lucky on ebay sometimes, someone just puts up like 30 cd's for a £1 each, excellent.

I'm gonna go on a bit of a cheap cd hunt online when i get paid tomorrow biggrin.gif

Going to see Earthtone9 tomorrow! i saw em on their farewell tour back in the day, so it's cool to be going to see them on their reunion jaunt. Brilliant band...they've put out a new tune too:

Earthtone 9 - Tide of Ambition

cracking tune...sounds like Earthtone with a slight more commercial slant on it, i love it.

I had a listen to the earthtome9 EP. It's good but not quite as good as i hoped. The third track 'The Trail That We Carved out' is really good though.

Also been listening to a couple of new tracks. Suicide Silence - You Only Live Once. Slightly dissapointed. But still enjoyable and i'm looking forward to their album.

And Iwrestledabearonce - Karate Nipples. I love this band. This song manages to sound like them, while being very different to anything off there album. It's them at there most pop like and at there heaviest. There not particular well liked by the usual 'metal crowd' and they seem to love that. Especially with there recent black metal press release.

The new Morbid Angel album is sadly utterly appalling. Some people are saying it's the biggest disappointment since St Anger.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYTtVk7M5dQ

I mean seriously? This makes me want to cry tears of piss. A review I read summed it up excellently with "It’s like one of the most base level Nu-Metal tracks from The Burning Red being covered by Hatebreed with extra riffs borrowed from The Beautiful People."

Even the death metal tracks are boring. I'm still going to endure a couple of tracks from this turd of an album when I see them at Hellfest though just to lose my shit to Maze of Torment and Chapel of Ghouls.

Pretty much what I'be heard too, although I'll make my own judgements when I eventually hear it. In my opinion although no death metal band has ever consistently released great albums. Theres probably never gonna be another Alters of Madness, or Dominate etc. Was everyone expecting more of the same? Yes. Is it the same? From the reviews ive read. No but were we maybe expecting too much?

Probably yes. Though this album has been hyped and hyped and hyped. It's been 8 years in the making and features the eagerly anticipated return of David Vincent to the band. People had huge expectations. I think that's why everyone's so pissed off because after these 8 long years, a lot of the album doesn't even sound remotely like Morbid Angel, and indeed in some songs, not even like death metal. If Trey and David had got together and released this album as a sideproject people would probably have found the whole affair a bit comical and taken the piss a little. It's the fact that it's under the Morbid Angel name which is annoying.

Also has anyone seen the little blurbs from leading metal musicians about the new album? For those that haven't:

""The new Morbid Angel album will cause 3rd World War. After June 7th, the extreme metal scene is never gonna be the same again... And I already can't wait the moment I'll be sitting on my sofa listening to "Illus Divinum Insanus" while the world burns! Ha!" - Nergal, BEHEMOTH

"No other band in the entire Extreme Metal genre but Morbid Angel would have ever dared to make 'Illud Divinum Insanus'. There are going to be quite a few unimaginative underground purists who think they know better what kind of album Morbid Angel should or should not be putting out, but with 'Illud Divinum Insanus' Trey and David prove that they answer to no one but themselves. It is an incredibly well written, performed, recorded and produced record." - Karl Sanders, NILE

"One of the best death metal releases since their last album with Vincent. I'm not too much into the techno bits but I am a dude who will appreciate and respect bands doing new things, progressing... So it's all good. Vincent's vocals of course are still as good as they come. And the riffs are definitely there, Trey always delivers. New drummer is killer too!" - Mikael Akerfeldt, OPETH

"The ultimate voice of death metal is back, as hellish as ever!" - Mikael Stanne, DARK TRANQUILLITY

"Glad to see Morbid Angel are back! We had our share of criticism when we first incorporated electronic elements in our sound and we know it takes courage and passion to follow one's own stream of inspiration. This time the guitar work is more impressive than ever and those 11 songs are a real 'tour de force'. With this new album they're not afraid to take the hit from the more conservative audience but that's what it means to be extreme!" - Vorph, SAMAEL

"Innovation, wits and a feral 'no compromise' attitude is what brands the greatest of bands. 'Illud Divinum Insanus' is all that and a leap further! Hail Morbid Angel!" - Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen, AVA INFERI, ex MAYHEM

"Morbid Angel still prove they can continue their legacy and deliver their madness with a skill so elite. The metal scene has no choice but to give back the crown to the undisputable kings of death metal! MORBID! MORBID! MORBID!" - Anders 'Blakkheim' Nyström, KATATONIA

"This is Morbid Angel the way I've always loved them: unpredictable, forward-thinking, different and extreme. In one word: unique. If you hoped for a dull repeat of the past, look elsewhere. If you want something modern and daring, 'Illud Divinum Insanus' is the masterpiece only Morbid Angel could dream up. Kick-ass!" - Dirk Verbeuren, SOILWORK

"I'd say it was definitely worth the wait. M.A. do their own thing as always and they are good at it. Vincent growls like a horny moose (meant in a positive way) Trey's weird riffing and songwriting is there and Tim Yeung is simply amazing. Maybe a couple of less appealing experimental tracks but over all true, groovy, crushing, heavy and fast as it should be. Rock on!" - Ola Lindgren, GRAVE"

Erm.....what? Have these guys really heard the same album the rest of the world has? Fair enough, most of those bands have been in decline for a number of years but this just seems like pals giving each other good reviews because they're pals.

Whatever the case, it's going to be interesting to see how Morbid Angel respond to the inevitable fan backlash - will they go all Cryptopsy in their reaction? I can't wait to find out.

Edit: http://www.facebook.com/officialmorbidange...l&filter=12

People sure don't seem terribly happy on the facebook page. Hell some people have apparently been banned.

yeh this thing is creating an insane backlash...i had a little listen through youtube but i'll have to get hold of the full thing.

off the point of Morbid Angel, but the sun is shining and im slamming this...

Kerbdog's first album, if anyone here has not heard this album i recommend you go find...the band ain't a straight metal band, i guess they'd get lumped into the same category of bands like Therapy? but there's definately a strong metal influence in there (not so much on their second album On The Turn which is also amazing). One of the most criminally underrated british bands of all time without doubt.

The base line for 'Earthworks' is immense
Schism
Clock
and Dry Riser

Are among the standouts on the first album.

'On the Turn' is epic in its own right and though is more Post- Grunge than flat out metal is well worth tracking down

Kerbdog went the way of the dodo when Cormac and co owed the record company a million quid iirc! They came back as 'Wilt' with a more pop and rock sound with a different bassist and their two albums are also very good. Bastinado and My Medicine

Left Side Brain are also worth checking out as they are heavily influnenced by Kerbdog. Equal and Opposite, Action Potential and Collider are well worth a listen for some insane riffage

Finally there is also Pledge- A Tribute to Kerbdog which is a load of Kerbdog covers which is pretty cool as well

So, after giving the new Morbid Angel album a couple of listens over the last couple of days, Ive had a chance to take it all in.

To say that this is going to polarise fans is beyond an understatement. Lots of people are going to hate it on the basis that this is "not a Morbid Angel" album. However, I commend the band for taking a chance with it. At the end of the day, its been 8 years since 'Heretic' was released, and they have obviously had to try and show some kind of progression since that last album, having had David Vincent come back to the band. Having David Vincent back in on Bass/Vocals does not hurt the album one bit, his vocals are actually understandable compared to Steve Tucker's. And Tim Yeung puts in another great performance (as he always does) on the drums. But whilst 'Heretic' was a very back-to-basics, stripped down juggernaut of an album, 'Illud Divinum Insanus' seems to go too far the other way. The somewhat 'industrial' experimentation of the album is also very much its downfall. Whilst the most synth-laden tracks ('Too Extreme!' and 'Destructos vs. The Earth/ Attack') are not bad tracks, they do out of place under the Morbid Angel banner. Don't get me wrong, this is not an unrecognisable, complete diveation to industrial-mess like Danzig's 'Danizig 5: Blackacidevil', its mearly a gamble that does not pay-off, in the same way that Megadeth's ironically named 'Risk' album didn't work. Rather than a progressional transistion to a new sound, Morbid Angel seem to have done what Metallica did (when they tried to regress their sound) in 2003 with 'St Anger' and go too far, too quickly.

Narrow-minded, ignorant 'fans' of metal will shit all over this and try to tell Morbid Angel (of all bands) how they should be making a death metal album (i.e. its only death metal if it has 56876434654 drum beats per minute), but ultimately, the band have tried something new, rather than just sticking to what brought them to the dance 22 years ago. Sometimes, a shift in sound can be a great thing (Pantera completly changed their sound in the early 90's, as did Testament in the later 90's) and sometimes the gamble does not pay off (Machine Head's 'Burning Red', In Flames 'Soundtrack To Your Escape'), but the band should not be held in contempt because of this poor showing. At the end of it all, they are still Morbid fucking Angel, and one of the biggest selling and most influential death metal bands to ever exist
lostprophet_y2j
I've given the Morbid Angel album one listen. I can see what you're saying and i do like bands trying different things rather than sticking to the same formula. But in the end it's a painfully average (at best) album. And really disappointing. I don't think it would be getting quite so much bad press if it wasn't Morbid Angel.

The vocals are very Max Cavalera-like, the song 'Radikult' reminded me of Soulfly's cover of 'Beautiful People'. I think my favorite songs were 'Destructos VS the Earth / Attack' and 'Profundis - Mea Culpa'. But nothing really stands out.

As i said i still can't wait to see them live this summer, as i never have before. I just hope they keep to 1 or 2 tracks from this album.

Exactly what I thought when listening through their tracks last night. The vocals especially sounded like where Pantera got their style. Some of the pure thrashy stuff I heard was fucking immense. Needless to say I was straight on Amazon scoring a copy of their albums for future reference.

yeh Exhorder are quality. The vocalist is a guy who's career ive followed, Kyle Thomas. I saw his other band Floodgate back in '96, super underrated stoner-metal band, they only released a single album but it's well worth picking up. He then went and fronted Alabama Thunderpussy, the one album he put out with them is fucking quality as well.

dusted this off today! Raging Speedhorn were a weird band, they somehow became very popular during the height of nu-metal despite being as far from nu-metal and commercial metal as you can get. Speedhorn were a nasty stoner-metal band. This is their second album and it is a f'n pearl! They kind of fell off the map after this yet did release two more albums (which ive never properly listened too, but i will) but this remains a little lost gem of the UK metal scene as Speedhorn don't get a mention anywhere these days. The first album is good too.

I like Speedhorn but they never really progressed much over their albums. They weren't the best musicians, i think they did very well for themselves considering. First Top 40 UK metal single since Maiden!

Onedice (awesome band) actually came on random on my mp3 player the other day, which got me think. UK metal (and rock) was really good, and pretty popular around the nu-metal time. You had Raging Speedhorn, Defenestration, Earthtone9, Scurge, Sikth, Onedice, One Minute Silence, Biffy Clyro, Hundred Reasons, Funeral For A Friend, Lostprophets, Charger, Hondo Maclean, Sunna, Hell is for Heroes, i could go on and on. And they were all getting plenty of press coverage.

So am i completely out of the loop or are there not many good UK bands about anymore? Although i don't buy any magazines now, i try to keep up to date with the music scene, and there seems to be ver few bands about.
