One thing I will say against it is that I've had enough of films that have the ending at the beginning now. I think that gimmick has been done to death.

I watched Small Soldiers last night after picking it up in Tesco for £3.00. It was a favourite of mine as a kid and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it last night. I'd forgotten about it containing this absolute gem from Major Chip Hazard, one of the most underrated movie quotes ever:
"Soldiers, no poor sap ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by being all that he can be. Damn the torpedoes, or give me death! Eternal vigilance is the price of duty. And, to the victors go the spoils. So remember: you are the best of the best of the few and the proud. So ask not what your country can do for you, only regret that you have but one life to live! The war against the Gorgonites will be won! Commando Elite, let the first shot be fired! Search out the Gorgonites and frag 'em all!"

Yea I should clarify, I still really like the odd line Ryan gets in just because he doesn't care any more and is a complete dick. Funniest thing he did recently that I remember was feign sadness that Stanley might die, he says something like 'Oh no Stanley, you'll live forever' with such a tone of apathy that I found it great. Also his exchanges with Pam where he antagonises her are great because I really don't like Pam any more.
And agreed on the Parks front. I don't like some of the characters but Leslie, Ben and most definitely Chris and Ron are terrific. April annoys me and Andy feels like a bad Jack Black impression but still it's a very enjoyable show. I like how they have slowly constructed this whole town's universe each season, it feels like a Sims game at times as you get to know more aspects of the town and it's people as they turn up every now and then. They also get some terrific guest stars, including the person who is set to play Leslie's opponent this season. I won't put it here to spoil the surprise for people who don't want to know.

I really liked Ryan as this ambitious, take no prisoners, corporate high flyer and then as part of 'The Michael Scott Paper Company' but I just don't get why he is still a temp at Dunder Miflin. To a degree I could understand Michael keeping him around, but from what you've said he is still just lingering around even now Michael has left. In fact his only major storyline these part two seasons has been WUPHF and a brief alliance with Dwight against Jim. Apart from that all he seems to do his hang around Kelly and pretend to do work in his 'office'.
Regarding that correlation between The Office and Park and Rec, I did read that it was attributed to both Greg Daniels and Michael Shure spending more time away from the former and onto the latter.

Yeah that alliance with Dwight was seemingly cut and never really went anywhere. I remember the ep where they shook hands and was really excited but then nothing. It is actually incredible how many changes he has undergone from the first season some have been very miss; I remember him wearing a fedora in The Lover ep which was just random.
I watched Limitless last night and really enjoyed it. I really like the idea of it although it should have had much more De Niro in it, and they missed one or two opportunities for cool plot devices. I really liked the visuals and bet they looked bloody brilliant in HD; they really compliment the manic nature of what is going on inside Cooper's head at times. It's not going to make a list of amazing films or anything like that, but it's an engaging, entertaining experience

I went to see The Darkest Hour the other day (purely as an excuse to go into a particular cinema), and aside from it being a really lightweight set up for a TV spin-off with no forseeable end, I had the most ridiculous sense of deja vu watching it. I can find no mention of it being a remake, but several scenes in particular I could have sworn I'd seen before.
If anyone's considering watching it, wait until it's on Syfy or Channel 5.

I watched Super 8 at the weekend and it was a fun, enjoyable film. The young actors and actress in the film were superb, perfectly cast and really made the film in my eyes. There are a few things in the film which confuse me, such as the fact that it is a 12 and there is a fair bit of swearing and violence ye the story in the film takes a very child friendly route, it confuses me who the film was actually made for but I enjoyed it regardless. Billed as the ET of our generation and it was a nice nostalgic adventure film. The music in it is ace as well.

Watched Shrill Cries Reshuffle & To Sir with Love
Shrill Cries was a kinda prequal to the original movie it was way to messed up and confusing for my liking the original was 10 times better and a prequal should of never been made it was pretty much a waste a little gory in places but the ending just ruined the whole film
But to Sir with Love on the other hand was a brilliant Korean/Slasher/Horror Movie lots of good action lots of blood and gore and a pretty good story aswell, well worth looking into if you can

Most of those are shite anyway, so you're not missing much.
I will have to pick your brain about Asian horror soon, though. Since Tartan Asia Extreme were taken over by Palisades, I think their output has been crap, but there must be some good stuff being made out there and me and Mrs Small love Asian horror. We don't mind the gore although we prefer films that have something of a plot on top of that.
The last good one we watched was The Booth, which was bordering on excellent, but that was made a good few years ago.

I watched Iron Man 2. The usual fun adventure film offering but even in that context it felt a little flat at times but overall an enjoyable film to watch. The first twenty minutes felt like a bit of a mess though; sure we got all the necessary seeds of the story planted but it was more or less scene after scene of Stark throwing parties as Iron Man and generally being a bit of an unlike able fuck, especially in the court scene at times but saying that, that scene was the best part of the opening by far. He was more or less played for laughs but I enjoyed Hammer a lot and there was decent enough chemistry between him and Rourke's character. Rourke just looked cool as fuck throughout, despite a hammy Russian accent. But Samuel L. Jackson was a joy to watch even with his limited role; just a real cut above that guy is. And now I've probably rambled on more than the film justifies

Fortress
I recieved this from the UKFF Secret Santa and since I recall it being quite good from watching it years ago I would give it another go.
Synopsis (stolen from IMDB):
`In a futuristic USA, it's forbidden to give birth to more than one child for each woman. As usual, you can escape to Mexico to avoid the authorities in USA, which is exactly what John (Christopher Lambert) and Karen Brennick were trying to do when Karen is pregnant with her second child (their first child was born dead). When they think they have made it they are discovered and put to prison (for 31 years), a modern prison called the "Fortress" where the prisoners are controlled by lasers, neutron-cannons, cameras, mind-scanners and electronic pain-causing devices in their stomachs. With those odds, John still plans to escape with his wife.`
In a phrase it is classic 90`s B-SciFi movie. Theres robots, computers, big corporations, limited budget, flame throwers, people blowing up and Christopher Lambert.
If your a fan of sci-fi gritty films (Robocop, Highlander) then you`ll probably like this move.

I just watched Immortals, the recent film about Greek gods. I knew it was supposed to be a lot like 300 which was cool so I was amped for it but it smacked my expectations on every level, I fucking loved it. The story made no sense but in the best way possible (plus it didn't really need to). There wasn't a dull minute, everyone was gorgeous, the fights were insane, the violence was extreme and over the top, everything looked awesome, it was so amazing visually I could have gladly watched it immediately again afterwards. Plus Mickey Rourke was badass. Henry Cavill (the lead) was great too and I really can't wait to see him as Superman next year.
I know loads of people thought it was shit but fuck them, I loved it.

Had a triple bill of very different films yesterday.
First was The Violent Kind which was just meh. I won the dvd along with a few others at Grimm up north horror fest last year and have only just got round to watching them. This film was touted on the cover as "Exorcist meets Sons of Anarchy", to me it was just Night of the demons (the shoddy remake) with Bikers.
Second was Dogtooth.I had a lot of people recommend this to me, and im still unsure of what to think. I was hooked in to the story but I think it will take me another viewing or two to really understand it.
Third and finally was TrollHunter. Found footage films are overdone now, but this offered a slightly fresh look along with the typical Scandinavian dry humor. I really enjoyed this movie, so much that It may get a re-watch tonight. (unless my housemate finally gets around to showing us Enter the Void)

HitMan
Based on the Game series it sees Agent 47 an orphan trained by a mystery organisation as an assassin take on interpol and the Russian police force trying to solve the reason he was set up.
I`ve seen it before and thought I`d give it another go. In retrospect i enjoyed the movie but watching it last night I realised its certainly a retrospect movie.
The aspects of the film are good (obviously showing why the games are so popular). A genetically enhanced killer whos sole purpose is to kill, nothing else. No personal life, no emotions, no freedom. The imagery is great, the use of russian locations and european locations are well used. The darkness and wetness of locations gives a true impression of what i consider the eastern european feel. The Characters are well indepth, it gives a great deal of insight into the character of Agent 47, the woman he needs to fill the gaps, the interpol police as chasers, the russian police as brutal robots, the mysterious Organisation in control and the other bad guys pulling the strings. Theres plenty there but thats where I feel it looses alot of its charm. Its got far too much in it. Theres too much going on. Who is who? who`s the bad guy? Why are they doing things the way they`re doing things? there just seems an excessive amount to take in and the movie suffers a little for it.
Dont get me wrong it is a very enjoyable movie but the overuse of things combined with the confussion of certain aspects made me, even with a second viewing, still scratching my head.
Reading the wikipage shows the sequal is in post production. If the direction is sorted out (some of the action scenes seemed uncordinated and very jerky), the story trimmed and tightened, I believe the sequal may be an emense movie but HitMan is just a little too much substance.

So I watched this last night, got a bit sleepy by the end (not the film's fault) but otherwise it was really good. Martin Shaw seems to have got all the praise in Gladstone's film countdown, I thought the star was in fact Roy Scheider. As much as I like the film, after all the years of parody and rubber shark jokes, I actually think Jaws is a bit cute and lovable these days.
Ip Man
I finally watched this last night. It is just brilliant! Its different to the usual Martial Arts films I've seen in the past, combining amazing action scenes with a pretty good drama storyline. Cashback
Seen this before. I can well imagine this being one that people would violently hate or really love. I liked it more the first time, it's overall far too silly to pull off its more fantastical bits and on a second viewing the mixture of comedy, gratuitous nudity and bits of 'stop the world' fantasy don't click together that well. It's still quite good, though, although I wasn't expecting a Nick Hancock cameo even second time round.
6/10
The Burbs
Still absolutely great, my favourite Tom Hanks film by quite some distance, and yet more proof of what a terrific all-round actor Bruce Dern is as well. The bit with the bees still makes me piss myself.
8/10
Cat People
The original Jacques Tourneur one not the shitty remake. Although the stretches of Nastassja Kinski nudity make it worth a Fap Watch.
Really great film. I love how quickly in old films people fall in love and how matter of fact they are in telling each other. None of this business of arseing around for an hour and a half summoning up enough courage to even say it. Do you love me? Yes, I do. Wonderful. Okay, let's get married. Just like that!
Not really a horror film as such, but the last half hour are as atmospheric as you will find in any film in any era. It can drag slightly at the start, but it's still got its marvellous moments. Simone Simon was simply beautiful, too.

I am in the same boat as you when it comes to Donne Yen - I have watched martial arts films for as long as I can remember but, for some reason, I never used to watch any of his films. I picked up Dragon Tiger Gate a couple of years ago as I had heard good things about it & that sold me on him big time. Of his more recent stuff I would recommend (the already mentioned) Dragon Tiger Gate, Flashpoint or Kill Zone. I tried watching 14 Blades but I could not get into it.
I'm not familiar with his older stuff though so cannot suggest anything from earlier on in his career. From previous threads about Martial Arts films I think there are a few people on here who are better suited to recommend stuff from his older films than I am.

The Burbs
Still absolutely great, my favourite Tom Hanks film by quite some distance, and yet more proof of what a terrific all-round actor Bruce Dern is as well. The bit with the bees still makes me piss myself.
8/10
by far? Surely dragnet has gotta be up there?

Dragnet is great but I still like The Burbs a hell of a lot more.
Although having said that, it's been ages since I saw Dragnet and I think I might dig that out tonight.
