Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is also a great musical
So good infact my limited knowledge of the barn building scene actually got me a snog off a fit bird! I had to look around to make sure someone seen us or noone would have believed me! She was hot!

Where The Wild Things Are: I had been waiting to see this for over a year ever since i saw the first teaser pictures that were put on-line because the book was such a huge part of my childhood. Thankfully this didn't disappoint me in the slightest, i enjoyed every single minute of it. I have a lot of respect for Spike Jones for not backing down when he was told to re-film certain scenes because executives apparently thought the film was to dark and scary for kids and that the main characters(in particular Max Records who plays... erm Max) were too unlikable which i think is bollocks anyways. It's funny, sad, dark and exciting all in equal measures and in my opinion will appeal to pretty much everyone. It's definitely one of my top films of the year.

Saw Where the Wild Things Are myself yesterday, really enjoyed it. I've seen a lot of criticism of it around the press, and to be honest it seems incredibly nitpicky. To say that Max was too cool and aloof because he didn't react with shock and awe at the monsters (The Guardian) seems to miss the point a bit - this is a child that takes refuge in fantasy from what he can't control in the real world. The other main criticism seemed to be that the monsters were too human, talky and neurotic. Reminded me of the beef a lot of critics had with Fantastic Mr. Fox, which I also thoroughly enjoyed. Is it really that bad that they've written kids movies that don't pander to what people think kids movies should sound like? Wes Anderson is great. Dave Eggers is great. Kids are idiots.
I've also just watched Let the Right One In. Fucking hell, what took me so long? Five stars. Easy. Would have made my best of the decade list had I seen it earlier. Comparable to Pan's Labyrinth in tone and quality, but - for me - a fair bit better.

I think you might be right. At a glance it looks well up my street. I'm having a crisis of faith with the British press, it's riddled with smug, hyper-critical wankers. The Independent gave WTWTA one star for fucks sake! One star!

Orphan. Right, I'm going to put this in spoiler tags because I enjoy talking about this movie more than I enjoyed watching it. Which isn't hard.

OK, so this is how the story goes. Mother & Father of 2 children are having a third, except it dies. After being distraught about this for a while they decide to adopt a child. In steps 9 year old orphan girl to fill the boots. She's a bit of a nutter. So much of a nutter that it turns out this 9 year old orphan girl is actually a 30 something midget from Russia who has been parading as a 9 year old girl for many years as an orphan so she can bump off the Mum, and try and shag the Dad. When the Dad's refuse, she kills them too.
That. Is fucking brilliant.
The film is awfull.

Was unreal this I thought like the visual effects were some of the best I've ever seen. Was never the biggest Star Trek fan when I was younger although I did see a couple of the films and a couple episodes of the show but that didnt detract from my enjoyment of this.
Passed all my expectations, would look unreal on a HD tele especially in Blu Ray

It does indeed look stunning. I thought the best effects were when there was water, but this wasn't used that much. The landscapes, colour and sound are all great.
The actual film itself is also good but not perfect. It goes along at a nice pace, constantly keeping you interested. I will definetly be going to see it again.

Harry Brown
Starring Michael Cain, Harry Brown is a UK vigilante film in the Style of Deathwish, old man takes out young guys, but set in british high rise concrete suburbia.
This is a great movie. Probably the best british movie of the year. But it is rather depressing. Set to the backdrop of concrete and high rise buildings its very claustrophobic and grey, probably a deliberate point than pure chance but it does make it quite hard to watch. Even the colourful areas are dulled down and grainy looking.
Michael Cain puts in an amazing performance and, hopefully, gets him over with the younger generation than more than just `that butler guy` from Batman. Theres still elements of `convenience` and `lucky` for the characters but theres also a few very difficult to watch sections that actually make you wanna turn away.
The premise that anyone can take on neds with only a knife and a gun actually makes you wanna get a knife and a gun and take down some social reprobytes but we all now its just a movie right?
Theres a few characters that you wanna know more about, why they do some things, why they are the way they are, but the film never goes into their background, good or bad I dont know! But it does leave me wanting to know a little more. Hopefully the DVD reveals more.
I may watch this on dvd when it comes out, but I certainly couldn`t rank it on my `watch again` list*. Its just far too depressing. But it more than worth a watch, its a must watch film.
*The `watch again` list isn`t written down or anything. I`m not that sad.

Loads more fun than I expected it to be, really. Danny Dyer can act, from time to time, he's just lazy as shit and nearly always picks bad films to be in. This was good, though, and loads better than The Descent and other modern British horror films...I don't know how many there are, I'm just making that up.

I went to see Avatar today, some of it was pretty good, some was awful and there was a LOT of meh in between. It was just far too long with a pretty thin story. It looks absolutly beautiful, make no mistake about that, but after an hour or so it starts to seem like a video game that you're not playing. It'll make a metric fuck ton of money, but the bits where it drags and doesn't seem to go anywhere are far too often it brings down the overall quality of the film from something that could've been pretty good to pretty average. Another thing that bugged me is a lot of the dialogue seemed like it was written by a 9 year old, it just didn't seem to fit in such a grand epic vision that James Cameron obviously had for this.
I watched Yes Man yesterday.
The only good thing about the film was the lead actress.. who had a Katy Perry thing going on.. but is just so much nicer. Apart from that.. it wasnt a patch on Liar Liar.

I saw Avatar yesterday and loved it. The real world seems pretty dull compared to the world of Pandora James Cameron created. A simple story and script but it totally works, some people have said it's too long but I didn't feel that. This needs to be seen in 3D and you shouldn't wait for the DVD to come out, you want to see everything on screen as best you can. There was one scene early on in the jungle where I was in awe of how beautiful it was. Also probably the first CGI heavy movie where the effects were actually really believable.

watched `bernard and the genie` tonight.
This TV movie was made by talkback productions and the BBC starring Alan Cumming as Bernard, Lenny Henry as the genie, Rowan Atkinson as Bernards boss and a load of cameos by other TV personalities.
Why havent I heard of this I hear you cry?
Thats cause it was made in 1991 and has never released on dvd (although there is a region 1 dodgy dvd that sells for upwards of £30)
Bernard is a young up and coming art dealer. After doing a good deed his boss Rowan Atkinson (who is pretty much being Black Adder) fires him. Bernards Girlfriend runs off with his best friend and leaves him with nothing. He then Finds the old Lamp, gives it a quick dusting and `POOF` Out pops Lenny henry as an over the top, Bisexual Genie! Can this genie of the past help our Bernard find a future?
I think this was Alan Cummings break out part. He does it really well, alittle annoying at times but comes across as a genuine heartfelt guy down on his luck. Lenny henry on the other hand gives a performance that is not only enjoyable to watch but doesn`t at anytime come across as an arse (which is quite amazing)! Its a little between a kids panto and adult content which works ok and at only 70 minutes long is easy on the watch.
I`m suprised this hasn`t come out on DVD. I`m sure anyone whos seen it years ago will remember it. It does mention Jesus a little but not enough to spoil the fun.
Download it!

Saw Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 last night. For what it is, it's pretty good. It passed quickly, had some lol moments and my daughter loved it.
Saw a trailer for the Tooth Fairy which looked like a decent kids film too.
I Am Legend
I wanted to see this at the cinema but couldn't be arsed to go, fortunately it's not a very good film so it all worked out in the end. Will Smith's performance was excellent, he played his role of the last human left on Earth better than I would have expected and you could believe that he was genuinely riddled with guilt and slowly losing his grip on reality. I'm aware that this film is based on a novel and unfortunately I haven't read said novel so I don't know if the plot holes came from the source material or were added in by a Hollywood writer but by the time the end credits rolled I felt like I'd only watched half a movie. I was also angry that they broke the "pets don't die" rule, having lost a treasured family dog this year I really didn't need to see that scene.

Just watched both The Science of Sleep and Hansel and Gretel (Korean)
If you like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind you should like Science, it's on a much lesser budget and without any known actors but was just as strong in my opinion. I think i'll have to watch it again as it's one of them films where you are wondering what's going on at first.
Hansel and Gretel was just fucking awesome, think of a mix between Pan's Labryinth and A Tale of Two Sisters that could easily live up to and maybe even better either film.

I think I should give them a try. Although I ought to watch Eternal Sunshine too.
Anyways, my Christmas day viewing:
Just Friends
Because I like Ryan Reynolds, and I'd read a few reviews where people said it was better than expected. It was, but not by a lot. Three mega-likeable leads, not bad script, etc. etc.
Observe and Report
I didn't realise til the film had ended that it was written and directed by the same man behind sitcom "Eastbound and Down". Now, I don't like that all that much - I find the main character completely unappealing and the way the show obviously loves him is a bad thing. Anyway, I think that series would have made a better film, if this is anything to go by. Seth Rogen's best performance by a mile, and the very odd mix between straight-ish comedy and a fairly bleak portrayal of a Travis Bickle-style character is handled about as well as it could be.

Santa`s Slay
due to it being christamas (`IT IS` I hear you shout!) I decided to watch Santas Slay - starring everyones favourite undefeated wrestler - GoldBerg.
Alot of folk have slagged this film off and it has featured in the Bottom list of crappy movies of all time lists. why they did this I`ll never know.
Oh yes I do!
Its fuckin awful!
Theres a back story of the fact that santa is infact the bastard child of Satan and that he was an evil bastard who killed and mained folk just for a laugh. Then one day an angel played him at Ice Curling (yes Curling! which isnt acted out but shown using stop motion animation), beat him and he had to be a nice present delivery person for 1000 years. Now the 1000 years is up and hes allowed to kill again. Thats it. Santa randomly kills folk in some of the worst fashion, rams a little old lady off the road, spikes another guy with a candle holder, drowns someone in eggnog.
Its basically 80 minutes of Bill Goldberg RANDOMLY killing folk in a little town in the most unoriginal style ever. Theres no gore, no scaryness, no plot and absolutely no need to ever see this film
Nothing happens. Theres a chase on a snowmobile while santa throws exploding presents from his sleigh, worst use of wobbling camera ever!
Should you ever have the oppertunity to watch this film I would accept, but only if A) you have eternal life and the loss of 80 minutes will ultimetly mean nothing to you, B) if you ever want to see how NOT to make a movie, C) your a huge Goldberg Mark and everything he does is amazing, D) you want to understand why i want a refund and I watched it for free!

I watched Home Alone 2.
I got fed up with basically watching the same movie again, but there was some super stuff left in the tank at times. The "yet we don't forget our luggage" when talking to the police officer cracked me right up, but the best part HAD to be the pipe part. I really wish I had Sky+ at that point because I really needed to pause that and rewind and watch again. There was more wee moments around it that made it enjoyable and the trap house was more cartoony than before. The big tool chest bundling down the stairs was a hilarious visual as well.
Infact, fuck it, I enjoyed it.

Went to see Sherlock Holmes last night. Its a little different from the Holmes we're used to, but I really enjoyed it. I'm a massive fan of Robert Downey Jr and once again he shines here as Holmes, his eccentricity mixed with Jude Law's straight Watson is a great combination and the film is often carried by just that chemistry. Its not without its faults, but its well worth a watch and very entertaining.
also saw Sherlock Holmes, i thought it was fucking great. I know a lot of people are put off by the fact that the movie isn't the traditional 'Sherlock Holmes' in style, but fuck it, it's a new twist on the character (apparently it's closer to the book than past versions, i have no idea?), very entertaining, funny, fast paced and basically just a good fucking time. Hopefully it develops into a series of movies, the foundations have been well and truly laid. I highly recommend it.

Some of it stretches "canon" a bit (like Holmes does know martial arts, decades before most people in Britain had even heard of them, but not to the extent shown in the film) but it looks like fun anyway.
Scanners
Never seen this, oddly enough. Bits and bobs, but never the whole film. Really good, I thought, although it is a bit cheesy at times what with the gurning faces representing use of powers and so on. But it does have a lot that I liked, and the main bunch of performances were all pretty solid (although it's always hard buying straight-to-DVD king Michael Ironside as a legit mainstream film villain).

Freddie vs Jason
I`ve seen this movie before, a good while back, but forgot enough about it to watch it again.
Plot: Freddies dead, Jasons dead! Freddie decides to make a return but cant cause the kids of elm street dont fear him, and without fear Freddie has no power. So He reanimates Jason and sends him on his merry killing ways to strike fear into the kids again, therefore growing in power and destroying some kids himself!
All is going killingly until Jason decides to kill a sleeping kid just as freddie is about to kill them in the dream world. Freddie doesnt get the kill and gets pissed at jason. Que some freddie vs jason milarky.
My memory served me better than watching it again as I remember the film being quite smooth and good paced when really its more 45 minutes being boringly over plottified (yes we know the plot please dont explain it again!) and then 45 minutes of freddie vs jason (which is excellent!)
Theres some neat tricks and great francise injokes and the fight is stunning, especially if you`ve followed both characters through their own individual storylines but its just not lacking enough depth to stand on its own.
A good attempt at cross promotion and franchise continuation, well worth watching with a bag of popcorn and a juice!

Black Dynamite
Parody / homage of the 70s blaxploitation genre. But not the famous films of that genre, the cheap shitty ones that came along at the end. So there's lots of deliberately wooden acting, continuity is largely ignored and everyone has a good time. It's also fun seeing the uptight Alison Blake of "Eureka" as one of Black Dynamite's ladies.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063563/Completely enthralling, one of those lead performances which I'll remember for years - Max Schell says little, but speaks volumes, as they say. The feeling of the book is captured perfectly, and the ending is one of those which makes everything that's gone before it appear better, which is the best thing that can be said for an ending, I think. If you have 90 minutes going begging, track down a copy of this, don't expect to have everything tied up (the novel it's based on was unfinished, and the film captures that quite well) and you'll have a really rewarding experience, I think.
