I went to a special advanced preview screening thing of Whip It today. It's Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, not high brow or anything fancy but I really liked it. And I'm sure some of you [Woyczek] will like it as it's got girls in hotpants or skimpy skirts, fishnet tights and rollerskates battering the hell out of each other.

Just watched Happy Go Lucky on Channel 4. Really liked it. The driving lesson scenes were great.
The Hill Have Eyes 2 is on next, so i'll probably give that a watch. Anyone seen it?

Just watched Eagle Eye. Billy-Bob was good, no real story. It was shit.
oaktree500
Watched Orphan last nighit, was a cracking film, and the crazy twist at the end was good, believable and i didnt actually see it coming at all!

I'd seriously recommend this if you havent seen it!

Hey, that looks quite good! Cheers for the heads up.

Pom Pom Girls - atrocious 1970s teen movie for teens rather than perverts nonsense that makes literally no sense.

Wake Up, Ron Burgundy - A mash up of deleted scenes and aborted plot lines coupled with a new narrative to try and have it all make sense. Enough laugh out loud moments but obviously not as good as Anchorman. Still, more Brick Tamland is a massive win.

Turtles Forever - What, you haven't seen this? Oh man, the fanboy's wet dream as the Turtles of 1987 wind up in the same dimension as the Turtles of 2003, much to the chagrin of the modern-day Raphael (of course) as the Shredder (the alien one from '03, not the bumbling '87 version - though he is there, along with Krang) discovers a multi-verse of Turtle dimensions and figures the only way to solve his problem is go after the original template known at Turtle Prime...leading to the arrival of the original 1984 Eastman and Laird black and white comic book foursome, as the twelve turtles band together in the hope of thwarting the erasure of the entire franchise.

In-jokes, parodies, cameos (Irma!), everyone being confused every time 1987 Raphael breaks the fourth wall and cracks a joke to the camera, 2003 Michaelangelo being enamoured with the '87 gang and Raphael (the 2003 one) falling in love with the bleakness of grimy, dark, black and white New York...all of it, wow. No James Avery or Cam Clarke though. Boo-urns.

Watched that too. Flipping amazing film, heard good things but for a film that doesnt really go anywhere ( nothing much happens)its very engrossing and its very very funny.

Gave up with Turtles Forever, SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read
couldnt get around the voice cast changes especially Shredder and the ploty which saw the 1980s versions of the Turtles be annoying and just a headache for the (sic) modern turtles was just too much. 1980s Krang/ shredder as a purely comedy chractert was shite also

I watched a movie called Carriers which was really, really terrible. It seemed like a whole lot of time and effort to get to where it ended up. Time that I won't get back.

I made up for it by watching Home Alone. I still love the scene with the pizza guy being scared away, and obviously the booby traps in the house.

Home Alone is shite, only called a classic by people who were children at the time of its release, swayed by nostalgia.

I dislike loads of movies I liked as a kid. Mainly because they're shite. I don't dislike Home Alone. Mainly because it's NOT shite.

Home Alone - the sort of movie disliked by people without souls.
LaGoosh
Home Alone is not one of those shitty kids films people like because of nostalgia. It's a great movie all round and the best Christmas movie (I love Die Hard too but come on) ever. The scenes with John Candy alone make it fantastic let alone the Wet Bandits general awesomeness, Culkin just full of charisma and charm and a soundtrack that is out of this world.
Carbomb
Blah blah blah blah blah home alone is good

It's a shit movie, with a shit premise, starring an annoying little turd who isn't even endearing in a childlike way, and it can't even be rescued by an awesome actor like Joe Pesci, because it was around this period he was in a mini crap-phase - it's going to take me a long time to forget Moonwalker.

Go and suck down your saccharine drinks, all of you. You want a movie at Christmas with a child star who's genuinely talented and sympathetic, with villainous villains, trials and tribulations with a big happy ending? Watch Oliver. It's miles better.
Famous Mortimer
I didn't particularly care for Home Alone either.

Angel of Death
Written by Ed Brubaker, the comic author guy, this is La Femme Nikita done with a grindhouse/exploitation film vibe. And manages to be worse than either of those things. Boring and awful, I abandoned it about 25 minutes in.

2 great (and underrated) Costner flicks are 'A Perfect World' & 'Open Range'. The former also starring & directed by Clint....winner.

Good to see the love for A Perfect World, it has to be one of my favourite films of all time.

And yeah Home Alone is Shite.

Serenity

Finished watching "Firefly" a few weeks ago and finally got round to watching this. The thing I realised most about it is the disappointment that such an interesting universe, great characters and exciting stories is now pretty much lost for good. But I shouldn't be too sad, I mean "According To Jim" got god-knows how many seasons...oh wait sad.gif

Oliver may have all of those things but it is neither fun nor funny, and musicals are for lames.

I don't know what's more depressing; the fact that Lester Freamon plays a bit-part role in 'The Nativity', or the fact that he was in Coventry City Centre at some point for filming and I didn't know sad.gif

Anyone else catch A Serious Man yet? Is it just me that didn't see all the fuss and thought it was very dull and depressing? I've heard loads about it being the Coen's most mature film and such but if that's their new direction I'd rather just give up on seeing anything more they have to offer. However there were some decent comedic moments I suppose. It helps if you're familiar with the bible (incidentally, I was/am not so much).

yeah I finally managed to see it last weekend but I really liked it. Although terrible things were happening to this perfectly likable guy, it was just hilarious. Very black humour as we've come to expect from the Coens, although it went well over the head of pretty much everyone else in the screen who obviously didn't really know what they went to see.
Jimmy_kahoona
i dont wish to hijack this thread but just a quick question,

Sci-Fi and Horror channel show these crappy modern computer graphic B-Movies but most are guff. Rather than wading through an almost endless amount of tat, are there and of the modern day B Movies/poundshop DVds worth watching?

I watched Serenity first and thought it was one of the better TV show-based movies as it didn't require you to watch Firefly to understand it. Though I thought it was better than Firefly, which was good but seemed too slow at time - though had more/better humour.

Last night I watched Oceans Eleven as it had some good reviews. Not a bad film, but I was slightly distracted by trying to remember where I'd seen cast members before to actually get into it.

And there are some underrated comedy moments in Oliver, just not all that many.

Have to confess to not having seen the whole TRPS, I've only seen clips.

It's great. Maybe it's because I saw it a hundred times growing up, but I love it. The songs are brilliant and Tim Curry was never better.

Joss Whedon does write the Serenity comics, and I'm pretty sure he's stated their in canon so there is more out there if you're interested. From what I remember the artwork was of a pretty high standard and was based on the actors, so it shouldn't be too much of a transition.
Tequila_Boy
Saw Cracks today. Not enough tit for my liking (though Eva Green has an awesome pair). Slighly surreal film, as though someone got slightly high after watching the naked maid bit in If and wrote a semi decent novel/film out of it
Steve Justice
Tim Curry is amazing in TRHPS. I did find the whole film a weird and a little boring though I have to say.

Oliver is by far my favourite musical. And to say it's not fun is just mental, Consider Yourself always brings a smile to my face. And Oli Reed as Bill Sykes is more terrifying than any Wet Bandit.

I'm with Rockwell. Anything where you go from talking, to singing, to dancing and then back to talking as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened is just too stupid for words. Throw in that 99% of the songs in musicals are completely shit and sound incredibly awkward as they desperately try to cover all of the points that the narrative wants them to and you really have a pretty good reason to avoid all musicals like the plague.

Apart from Spamalot, because it's ace.
Chest Rockwell
I took my grandma to go see Blood Brothers one year for her birthday; it is the epitome of lameass musical theatre. I would wager that Legally Blonde The Musical is better than that was.

Though I will say that not all musicals are necessarily bad as my initial sweeping statement suggested. South Park the Movie was great, and I'd be tempted to see Avenue Q from the reviews that its received.
Au
Singing In The Rain is brilliant. Although I've only ever watched it stoned so my opinion maybe somewhat swayed by that. Although, Joseph Gordon-Levitt recreated one of the scenes when he was on Saturday Night Live recently and it was just superb.
Carbomb
I've only seen bits of Avenue Q, but I really do want to see it before it closes soon.

The main reason why I've come to hate musicals so much is because it's really sent the West End down the shitter. For a long time, the West End was the last bastion of the arts establishment choosing quality over profitability, but it's finally caved, spectacularly. Now it's saturated with bad musicals, some good ones, and a few good ones gone bad. Les Miserables is nothing like what it used to be, same with Blood Brothers, Lion King, Grease and Phantom of the Opera, and there are loads of new, awful shows like Hairspray, Dirty Dancing, Sister Act, Legally Blonde, Priscilla and Mamma Mia. There are a few good ones, like Q and Jersey Boys (apparently that's REALLY good), but they're in a huge minority, for one simple reason: when it comes to musicals, the West End simply cannot match Broadway. We're much better at straight plays, and there just isn't enough of those. I'm immensely looking forward to seeing Jerusalem, which will be on at the Apollo Theatre very soon (it did amazingly at the Royal Court), but it's not going to be on long. Samuel Beckett's Endgame was on at the Duchess in Victoria, but again - not on very long.

The fact is that, until the UK arts establishment wake up and realise that they need to either train up their talent for musicals using the American system, or simply drop musicals in such a large scale, the West End is, and will continue to be, an utter shadow of its former self.

Mentioning of Musicals and Films and no mention of Little Shop of Horrors (Remake) and The Blues Brothers Pfft

Generally I dont like musicals:- King and I, Carousel, Chicago, Moulin rouge etc.. Ill watch em if they are on, but wont give them much more than a passing glance.
Loki
Most musicals are fucking shit, but the ones that are good are amazing - West Side Story being the prime example. Also, Annie is a Xmas fave, and Bugsy Malone. How can anyone dislike Bugsy Malone?

Have you seen the original and current runs of all these shows? And have you seen all the newer shows? And if not, how can you make these judgements with such certainty? Genuine question.

Regarding the West End, Carbomb and Rockwell have a point. I work in Victoria and Wicked isn't very good. Billy Elliott isn't great either. We Will Rock You is a terrible concept that was badly executed and there are many other substandard shows out there as well. The point about straight plays is spot on. I saw Dr Marigold and Mr Chops last week and really enjoyed it - Simon Callow was great.

As far as musical films go (and films are the thread topic) I still maintain that My Fair Lady, West Side Story and others are actually cool and not 'for lames'.

I've seen the original Blood Brothers and their recent one, same with Les Mis, and have seen the original POTO. The ones I haven't seen, I've pretty much heard from people I trust - a lot of the people I work with are actors who've worked in the West End for years, either on stage or Front of House, and their judgments are pretty sound.

When it comes to the newer ones, I just check footage on Youtube - in comparison to their Broadway counterparts, they're almost invariably inferior.
