Speaking of [REC], I've just watched Quarantine again.
It reminds me of the Halloween remake in that the movie feels the need to take any mystery away. We have everything spelled out to us like we're five years old and it makes the whole thing really fucking tedious. Add that to the horrible acting and the needless little ideas put into the movie, it's just not very good. I could stand it before, but this is just a really crappy movie.
Harry Brown
One of the best films of the year for me. Caine gives a brilliant performance, and actually has you feeling sorry for his character. Well worth a watch!
I watched Harry Brown last week.. and whilst it was really good.. its not as awesome as I thought it would be. I think they should have made us hate the thugs a bit more. We only saw them do a few things here and there.. so towards the end of it I wasnt gunning that much for Caine to take them all out.
Still.. definately worth a watch though.

Just been to watch the original Ghostbusters in the Odeon as part of their film club night, awesome to see it on the big screen and the fact that it was an original 80's print, complete with scratches dust and jumps during the reel changes added to the coolness of seeing it. It actually made me a little nostalgic for films that looked like film, everything is far too clear and crisp now lol

2012...million plot line rolled into one film. I enjoyed the film despite the fact it rolled 3 feature films into one LONG ass film. Everything was nice and way to coincidentally lucky. I've heard people going on about the story being shit but the CGI being awesome. However I was fine with the story, but I was really dissapointed with the CGI. Not that it was rubbish, but I felt that a lot fo the time they had bitten off more than they could chew.

I saw W. (Dub-ya) on DVD the other evening, a cheap find at my local charity shop.
Quite enjoyable to watch if it's your bag but it seems rushed for a biopic, lots of stuff missed out that is part of his story, such as when George Bush was in a school class room when he was informed of the planes crashing into the twin towers on 9/11 and barely reacting, the execution of Saddam Hussein. Oh and nothing of the Skull & Bones secret society.
been having a bit of a movie binge this past week cause ive had some time off from the girlfriend, ive watched...
Ghost, Roadhouse, Universal Soldier, The Men Who Stare At Goats, Field of Dreams, The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 (remake)
can't say there was a duff movie there, some are movies i rewatch on a regular basis (Roadhouse, Universal Soldier), a movie i shouldn't admit to liking (Ghost), a decent but unspectacular remake (Pelham), a strange coen-esque comedy that i feel will get better on repeated views (Goats), and a movie i'd never seen before but instantly fell in love with (Field of Dreams).
need to see more!

Nov 27 2009, 21:49
Field of Dreams is, indeed, brilliant. I've seen it loads of times and loved it every time. Ghost is the only other one I've seen there, and I don't really mind it.
Watched Psycho III earlier. What else has Anthony Perkins actually done ? I was going to check his IMDB, but an error message keeps on closing my IE when I try and go on there. He's absolutely brilliant as Norman Bates and that didn't change in this one. You honestly have no idea what you're gonna get. Other than that, this movie was pretty bad.

SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read
For anyone who doesn't know it's sort of a cross between The Blair Witch Project, Poltergeist and The Entity. It was pretty good, it's nowhere near as scary as it's made out to be(surprise surprise) there a few good shocks here and there but i just think that most Americans are pussies when it comes to horror films. My only real gripe with it is that the main guy in the film just came across as such a huge and monumental cunt that by the time it got to the last half hour or so of the film i was begging for him to be killed in a brutally violent manner.Overall i'd give it 6.5/10. If you're a fan of films like The Blair Witch Project and [.REC] then i'd recommend it too you
The Entity? Sorry, that was about a ghost sexually assaulting the female in the movie. Paranormal Activity was about a haunting and possession.
Paranormal Activity was great but The Entity is a different ball-game. It was filled with far more dread, especially the ending where the entity shouts "welcome home cunt". Definitely one of the weirdest/unnerving endings I've seen.

Ghost is fine to like. I loved the scenes with Vincent Schiavelli teaching Swayze to be a ghost when i was a kid so much i wanted to be dead. With this and Beetlejuice it's probably a miracle i'm still here.

Seen it several times and it really is an underappreciated classic. Have you seen Bull Durham? Another great Costner baseball film which i only got around to seeing this is year, also have a soft spot for For Love of the Game.
This month i've been disapointed in Naked & two Kitano films, seen 3 awesome animated films Castle of Cagliostro, Wall-E (possibly the greatest animation EVER) & Mary And Max, Loved Gran Torino & The Hangover and watched Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom which is erm.....unique
Finally watched Hostel which although isn't very good wasn't quite as bad as i thought it was going to be. After watching the original and awesome Last House On The Left for the first time this year i decided to take a look at Wes Craven's other 70's Horror "classic" The Hills Have Eyes which really is pretty crap. I'm not entirely sure how being atttacked by the Flintstones is supossed to be scary but the remake doesn't have a lot to live up to. Also watched RocknRolla which wasn't bad, rewatched Eagle Vs Shark (which more people need to see) the fantasic Step Brothers and also Batman which i still love more than any other comic book film, perfection.

aint seen Bull Durham yet, im getting there though. I;ve been binging on Kevin Costner recently.
Anyone else catch A Serious Man yet? Is it just me that didn't see all the fuss and thought it was very dull and depressing? I've heard loads about it being the Coen's most mature film and such but if that's their new direction I'd rather just give up on seeing anything more they have to offer. However there were some decent comedic moments I suppose. It helps if you're familiar with the bible (incidentally, I was/am not so much).

Went to see Law Abiding Citizen today and its a pretty good revenge thriller. I'm a big fan of Gerard Butler and really liked it, I think he has a certain presence which works well for him. I had heard it was pretty over the top violent, bordering on the torture porn level of the Saw movies, but it really isn't at all so I'm not quite sure where that came from. If you're looking for a good action/thriller that isn't too deep but engaging all the same, give this one a go.

Just back from seeing Paranormal Activity
Already been mentioned a few times but here my take on the thing.
SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read
Its the Exorcist for the You Tube Generation!
It starts off pretty slow but thats a good thing. Builds the characters up as human with a little background. Hes definently a lot of `american gung-ho, where is it and i`ll bash it with a baseball bat!` jock style.
Pretty scary for the first half, alot of anticipation and a few, oh dear dont go downstairs/up the loft moments. The problems start when the footprints arrive. Up till that point anything was possible but once they gave the `demon` a little substance it killed all anticipation of what might be and the film died for me after that.
Also the ending is pretty scary in a `ring` style BUT why show the biggest scare of the movie in the trailer? I sat and waited for the flying boyfriend part so again it killed any big shock.
overall worthy of a watch, especially on a date.

Due to the weather being shit and spoiling our plans we had a little movie marathon yesterday.
SAW VI, Street Kings, Trainspotting & From Dusk Till Dawn. The last 2 I've seen plenty of times but she has never seen them, plus it was nice to watch them in HD. All enjoyable in thee own right.
SAW VI was better than I expected it to be. I'd gotten quite bored of the series to be honest but saw that a decent download was available so thought why not. Plenty of gore and conundrums as you would expect but it just seemed to flow better than the last couple of releases. I even managed to fit the peices together.
Street Kings would have been better if Keanu Reeves hadn't been in it. I've got a plank of wood available that could have played the part much better. In fact if I put some tinsel on it it would have twice as much charisma too. Other than that it was a decent flick, Forrest Whitaker being his usual great self (albeit a little too Denzal from Training Day imo).

No R5 Retail. The sound wasn't great to be honest, a little bit tinny as you can get sometimes with R5's. It was tolerable though. The picture on the otherhand was perfect.
Funnily enough I've downloaded Harry Brown which is also R5 Retail and both picture and sound are perfect.
The Yakuza
A total rare gem from 1975 that came up on TV. Ageing PI Robert Mitchum is hired by an old friend to rescue his daughter who's been kidnapped in Japan, where Mitchum lived and worked after the war. A fabulous film-noir plot full of twists and turns but enhanced by the clash of cultures in post-war, pre-modern Japan.
Mitchum isn't talked about as much today as some of his contemporaries like James Stewart, but really he was an incredible actor. There's a scene in this film where he meets the love of his life after a 25 year absence, which is just an incredibly emotional moment told without music or dialogue, just pure acting chops from both parties.
Mitchum once said of his own acting "I have two kinds of acting. One on a horse and one off a horse. That's it." This was the best off-a-horse acting you're likely to see.
An absolutely top film.

Theres some classic set ups (especially the video game to real life) and some great chemistry between jack and kyle but it just seems to be missing that extra something to make everything gel together and become awsome.

A Cock and Bull Story
Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon star in a film about the making of a film of the book of "The Life And Opinions Of Tristram Shandy" (with a bit of the actual film-within-a-film in there too). Captures the spirit of the book better than a straight adaptation ever could, I think. Lots of great performances in it too, and the two leads were great. All in all, I say yes to this film.
saw Law Abiding Citizen - standard thriller afair really, it's a little stupid but just go with it and it's enjoyable enough. I'm still torn on Gerard Butler though.

Watched a couple of decent flicks & one stinker this last weekend. First off was 'Gamer' with Gerard Butler, standard action fare from the people that bought you Crank 1 & 2. The camera work was very much like Crank but unfortunately the knowing sense of ridiculousness was missing. If you liked 'Death Race' with Jason Statham this might be for you? If like me, you thought it was shite then avoid.
'Harry Brown' with Michael Caine was a big improvement. Caine delivers a great performance in a pretty predictable genre flick. The first half is a basic, kitchen sink drama but once the 2nd act kicks in the film picks up pace & is enjoyable. Without Michael Caine this would've been a straight to DVD release.
The final flick was 'Whatever Works', the new Woody Allen romcom starring Larry David. Woody + Larry = Jewtastic fun. Allen apparently wrote the script 30 years ago & it shows, in a good way. It's similar to the likes of Annie Hall & Manhattan & Larry David (playing the Woody character) is fantastic. If you're not a fan of Allen's work then this isn't going to convert you but if like me, you're a fan of Jewish humour (or just want to see Larry David verbally abusing small children) then this has got some cracking one liners.

But apparently the original `throat slit` ending is quite disturbing. anyone got any links to that ending?

See I don't think they even got as far as having a premise. I think they had something that could have become a good premise but then Butler decided that looking slightly moody, and chubby it has to be said, would get the job done so they just started filming.
LAC wins my "Looks as if they didn't finish the script but started filming anyway and really hoped no one would notice" award for 2009.
been continuing with my movie-fest the past few days, saw...
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation - never gets old. I have to bust this out every year, so many quotable lines and two classic comedic performances by Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid. I'll watch it again before Xmas.

21 for the 2nd time and enjoyed it again.
The Ugly Truth - yep, a romcom. Not my genre at all, but now having a girlfriend these things need to be done. I actually enjoyed it

Gerrard Butler was much better in this than he was Law Abiding Citizen. It's probably standard romcom stuff, but i never watch this kind of movie so it felt kind of fresh to me. I'm ashamed of myself.
Fred Claus - continuing the Xmas theme (i go nuts in December)...couldn't really knock this. Kind of a modern take on Santa Claus the movie. It's a fun film, pretty stupid and is something that could be watched by a family. It's a christmas film, easy viewing. Oh!!! but it's definatly worth seeing just to catch Elizabeth Banks in a little Santa outfit, cooooor. I'd love to pound her into the dirt, beautiful.
A Boyfriend For Christmas - ok, i've gone off the rails. Trawling the channels yesterday i came across this starting on the frickin' Hallmark channel. I watched it, and call me a bender but i liked it! Basic romance story which could have played out without the Xmas background in any other movie but it was pretty fucking good. Likable lead couple, swarmy cunt of a villain, light humour, Charles Durning as Santa, fuck it, prefect Tuesday morning christmas movie.

You are a bender. But then, I love "Elizabethtown", so I'm definitely not one to talk.
Recent watches - 300 on blu-ray (man, do I love that film), and National Lampoon's Dorm Daze 1 and 2. The weird thing about the Dorm Daze films is that they're like classic English farces, just with the trappings of the college-based comedy. Really weird at first, but when you get into it, they're both surprisingly good.

The whole premise of it is that the demon doesnt actually exist. We are the demon for watching and wanting something to happen. So when she comes in and slits her throat in front of the camera its because we wanted something disturbing to happen. An excellent, fitting ending I thought! I just hope it makes it to the dvd also

hit the cinema tonight and heres my reviews of what i watched (because my opinions count)
Nativity!
Its about a school teacher who puts on a nativity play. He says something stupid trying to impress someone and the town thinks the plays going to be filmed for Hollywood.
There is not much else to it. Its made by the BBC and stars a whole host of cameo BBC people. Is it any good? well, do you have kids? have they ever been in a nativity play? if you answered `Yes` to both these questions you`ll find it hilarious. If you answered `No!` to both these questions, then i`d watch it to see what it would feel like to have kids in a nativity play. Its a good film, goes alittle weird in parts and seems to loose its way about 5 minutes from the end but its a good family romp but probably better for parents to reflect back on how kids like to be in plays!
Twilight - New Moon
1 of 2 things are about to happen here. Either I`m going to slate it saying its a whole toss pot of Tweener romantic action pish that deserves to rot in the infestation that is tweener goth/emo/pretend rock pile of manure crap.
Or its going to be a great follow up to an excellent romantic movie.

I loved it! So brilliant. Very funny in parts and moving aswell.
Made me want to be a kid again.
I watched Premonition last night on Channel 4 as it got a recommendation in the newspaper and the synopsis looked good. On imdb it only got 5.7 or something.
Well, I really enjoyed it, even though you could predict what was going to happen.
My only problem was that the ending was terrible. They didn't follow through on what had happened earlier in the film at all.
I recommend The Box to everyone purely for Frank Langella's hysterical speech about boxes. The rest of it is incredibly shit.
The Polar Express - if you don't like it then you have no heart.
