Liked it, the twist at the end was a bit out there though.

I've just been to an advanced screening of the new Disney/Pixar movie Up and it was fantastic. I'd say it the closest Pixar have come to beating Toy Story in terms of how great it is. It was both funny and genuinely quite sad in places(the couple sitting next to me were openly weeping at one point.) I would highly recommend it to everyone whether you're a fan of Disney movies or not
I'm currently one hour and 54 seconds into Rain Man.
Over rated imo.
I was watching a youtube video on Kim Peek last night (part of the inspiration behind the film) so I thought I would give the film a go. I'm only an hour into it but I've stopped it to have something to eat and I don't think I will watch the rest of it anytime soon. It's very boring, nothing is really happening. Dustin Hoffman is talking a load of bollocks and Tom Cruise is quite enraged by this, which is essentially the last 30 minutes of the film . Maybe if I keep watching there will be some heart wrenching conclusion to the film that will make it worth while but I am struggling to get into it at the moment.
Just to add, I think the reason I'm struggling to get into it is that it's tremendously impressive to see a genuine austic savant tell you these amazing facts but to see Dustin Hoffman pretend to do it in a movie is not very.
I also started to watch the Wrestler last night which was rather average as well. This is why I'm not a film person.

You'd be more impressed with Hoffman if you've seen Gigli. The guy who plays the retard in that is awful, and definitely the 3rd worst actor in that film.

Transformers 2.
Take out the ethnic twins and Optimus Prime spouting "punk ass Decepticons" and it's an OK action flick.
Seriously it could have really done without the twins. And what Prime said above almost made me want to turn it off at that point. It really ground my gears.
Also, am I right in thinking that Bumblebee started to talk properly at the end of the first one? And if so was there a specific reason why he was talking in radio again?

I saw Gervais' new film, The Invention of Lying last night. I didn't have very high expectations but it was actually pretty decent. If you're not a fan of Ricky's, then just don't bother, but if you are its pretty funny and a much better film than Ghost Town was. There's some entertaining little cameos from Stephen Merchant, Barry from Eastenders and Jason Bateman in particular and I enjoyed it. Like I said though, its very much Gervais being Gervais, so you have to be a fan to like it really. Going to see Zombieland this week, have heard suprisingly good things.

Wasting Away: Low budget Zombie comedy movie released sometime in 2007 on the film Festival scene but is only just being promoted on dvd here now. I saw an ad for it in the London Lite and the poster was littered with positive comments (which I know doesnt always mean much) but I thought id give it a go anyway incase it was a gem.
For those who havent heard of this film before, the story is quite unique as far as Zombie flicks go. Bassically 4 teenagers unknowingly consume a discarded military substanced designed to create 'Super Soldiers' but instead turns people into Zombies. The unique twist is that the teens arent actually aware they are zombies, and after meeting another "zombie" on their travels who is ex military, they believe that they are super soldiers and it's the rest of the world who are "infected". The premise itself leads to some amusing moments and perspectives. The zombie teens see the rest of the world in fast motion and theres also some amusing scenes in which, whilst shown from the teenagers normal perspective, them engaging in zombie like behaviour like eating brains and super human strength.
Theres some nice touches with how the film itself is shot, with the majority of the film being shot in normal colour, but scenes in which the teenagers are seen as Zombies is all in black and white.
Overall, the film is what it is, a low budget zombie comedy, not aimed to please the masses. The film itself drags on a bit towards the end, without the film actually being that long, and whilst there are some funny moments, I didnt often find myself laughing really hard at anything, more a few chuckles here and there.
The acting itself is reasonable for a film of it's type, and one of the lead actors is the spitting image of Freddy Prince Jr, but dont let that put you off, he's actually not quite as bad an actor! The lead females are hot, and whilst the characters themselves are very paint by numbers (Cocky stilfer-esque popular guy, Timid yet still handsome friend of popular guy who has a crush on longtime female friend, innocent virginal blonde girl who is object of timid guys affection, and sassy intelligent brunette who used to go out with popular dude) but arent offensive in any way.
Id reccomend it for atleast 1 viewing. It's by no means a bad film, but is in no way, shape or form in the same league as Sean of the Dead. With Zombieland out in cinemas now, if your in the mood for more Zombie comedies, it's deffo worth a watch!

Zombieland Fucking awesome, just a balls-out, gore filled action/comedy film with quite possibly the best cameo appearance ever from
SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read
Bill Murray. Woody Harrelson is on top form as is Jesse Eisenberg. I would definitely recommend it.
I saw
Explorers the other night, which I recorded at random a few weeks ago.
I had this vague memory of a film when I was young where some kids made a spacecraft that went in a bubble into space, and everyone always says "Oh, it was The Last Starfighter". But I've definitely never seen that. And indeed, the film I was thinking of is
Explorers!
The film is pretty good, in the same-ish vein as Goonies, Weird Science etc. You know, those great kids films that they used to make in the 80s that are clearly never going to get made again. The sad thing is, the cast has these 3 main kids in it - River Phoenix, Ethan Hawke, and this third guy, Jason Presson, who was totally the coolest:

There he is, on the right, wearing a walkman.
He's the cool kid with a motorbike who plays be his own rules etc. And it's far and away the best performance in the film, miles better than the other, more famous kids. And what happened to Jason Pressman? Nothing, nada. Zilch. Not even a Wikipedia page. It's strange who "makes it" and who doesn't.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0696320/He was also in Lady In White, which was pretty good in a similar vein of being an 80's kids movie, this time with a supernatural twist. I've not seen it in years and have no idea how big his role was in it but you're right, he's basically done nothing else of note, which kinda sucks if he had so much potential.
He's like a more obscure Edward Furlong.

I saw The Invention of Lying, of itself, I thought it was a pretty good film, some good laughs and some nice moments, but I couldn't help but think that it had the potential to be so much more than it was. If perhaps Gervais hadn't written it it could of been VERY good indeed

Started watching 18 Year Old Virgin tonight. There aren't many films that I haven't been able to sit through but this was one of them. Absolutely abysmal.
Watched Hot Rod the other night. Was hilarious - if your into apatow type films - eg knocked up,superbad you might like it. Quite a particular type of humour i guess - the lead guy is from lonely island.
Hot Rod is cool.... cool beanz!
Add me to the list of people who went to see Zombieland last night. Absolutely tremendous fun, really funnny, some great action sequences, really good effects. Sure, it's basically Hollywood trying to do something along the lines of Shaun Of The Dead but it's well written and well directed enough to become it's own thing entirely. I don't think there was any point where I was disappointed in where the film went which seems to be a rare thing these days.
Kinda made me think it's what what you'd get if you smooshed together Shaun of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead 2004.

Up, saw it today. I liked it, I did, Pixar still on form as usual, for some reason I just couldn't take the whole thing seriously though. Whereas the premise of Toy Story is the Toys move form the beginning, and Wall-E is set in the future, and the whole of the Cars world is Cars, the fact the whackyness did't come in straight away and was added on top of this story which seemed to be quite normal sort of irked me and I didn't enjoy it as much as I have other Pixar films

Went to see Zombieland last night, and was really disappointed by it. Started off brilliantly, but went downhill very quickly - the jokes alternated between not being funny enough and being too American, so the punchlines were lost on most people in the audience. Sure there were a few chuckles here and there, but most of the lines fell pretty flat. The ways of dispatching the zombies were all a bit old-hat, nowhere near as inventive as they could have been given the locations they found themselves in. And I felt that they didn't make nearly enough out of the theme park situation either - it could have been so well done if only they'd spent more time there instead of taking the best part of 45 minutes just to set up the interchangeable characters who didn't even matter anyway.
Then again, maybe it was an audience full of hardcore zombie lovers who just found it all a little bit tame. There were some foetuses at the front who seemed to enjoy it though.

Damage. Yes the straight to DVD film staring Steve Austin. His acting was a bit wooden at times but nothing to complain about too much. Not a great deal of depth to the story and parts were a bit laughable and confusing at times but you learn enough about the characters as the film progresses. Plenty of violence, but no nudity. I'll give it 3 wing mirrors out of 5.

I guess now is a good time to admit to having watched an awful film at the weekend. I feel like I spend more time watching crap movies than actually decent ones that are more worthy of my time. I really have to draw a bold line at how far I am willing to take this in the name of irony.
Lost River Lake was a thriving resort... Until they discovered Piranhas.
Killer Mutant Piranhas, in fact.
I honestly don't feel the time investment was worthwhile enough to give a detailed plot summary about this movie. JLM, who also had the misfortune of watching this, and who is much better at summarising these films in a way that does the time wasted watching this justice, will likely give one. But here is a basic summary, which contains spoilers for anyone who really cares.
Some small time female detective who is 2/3rds bloodhound is set on the trail of a ruthless corporate tycoon's missing niece. They've gone missing in some remote rural village. She ends up dragging this unlikeable 'protagonist' along to investigate some dodgy shack deep in the bowels of the hills. This event culminates in genetically altered piranhas, which have an insatiable appetite for human flesh and an ability to survive in salt water, being released into the river, and a frantic scientist being brain damaged by a mini aquarium. The only way to stop them is, for some contrived reason, to ride a rickety raft up river to warn people of the approach of these piranhas. Numerous dogs, white trash, racist negroes etc. are laid to waste by the piranhas, with the protagonists predictably arriving too late to be of any real help. The scientist commits suicide in the most baffling fashion. Many, many second-long shots of piranhas advancing shown to the sounds of a dissonant string chord are shown, as well as the legs of insouciant, immortal children frolicking in the resort upstream. High quality tension. Lots more boring stuff happens in between, but eventually the piranhas wreak havoc at the resort and almost get to the sea only to be poisoned by the main hero's release of toxic waste from some rig, which is about the only good thing he does. Also, the entire endeavour is rendered futile, as the film suggests the piranhas made it to sea where they can terrorise the nation's water dwellers anyway. Ugh. Questionable event writing. Pointless extra characters. Loathsome protagonists. Irritating film.
Oh CEX...
That about covers it. The fact that the dog died in a horrible manner was a brave move because, along with children, family dogs tend to do alright in these movies. Not as well as children (Michael Myers has offed a dog in his time, and Will Smith's dog in I am Legend didn't make it), but to see a dog dive into the water and then get piranha'd to death was quite an ordeal.
I will do pros and cons now:
Pro: Loathesome protagonist who looks like Rory Bremner suffers a horrible piranha mauling.
Con: He survives and his wounds look less severe than they should.
Pro: Evil tycoon guy is a total bad-ass and the best character in the film.
Con: He witnesses the carnage he has caused and kills himself.
Pro: Mila Kunis in a swimsuit!
Con: It's 1995 you fucking pervert.
Pro: Mila Kunis has had a decent career since this movie.
Con: Mila Kunis was in this movie.
Pro: A metal song was written just for this film.
Con: It's one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life and it gets stuck in one's head.
Pro: Boobies!
Con: They're either a) attached to an annoying average-looking miscast eye candy or b) surgically "enhanced" to the point of gross deformity.
Pro: Fat kids trying to get out of lakes at speed!
Con: They make it.
Pro: A Jet Ski crashes into a boat and causes a Hiroshima-esque explosion.
Con: They should have spent that money on convincing piranhas.
Pro: The government initiative to create the mutant piranhas that can survive in any kind of water is called "operation razor teeth".
Con: There's actually no downside to that. I'll give them that one. It's brilliant.

I just watched The Strangers and wow...what a tense, hopeless, despairing picture that is. I was kind of expecting it to be a bit more mainstream, like a slightly scarier Panic Room with less plot and more violence, but nope...it's all tension and terror cranked to eleven. Quite beautifully orchestrated in terms of tension and scares, too, so if that's your thing I'd recommend it. If you don't like that feeling though, don't bother. There's practically no story at all. It's just an 80-minute exercise in suspense techniques and trying to scare you out of your mind.
Watch in pitch darkness with all your doors unlocked and see how long you can keep them that way.
