The Boat That Rocked - It got really shit reviews in some papers so I avoided it on the cinema but it had 7.6 on imdb so gave it a chance. I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed it. At over 2 hours it didn't drag at all.

Finally watched Ready To Rumble last night. And enjoyed it.

Watched District 9 last night.

Was decidedly Meh, and quite fricking obvious what was going to happen.. I know it had a small budget but it wasnt really that great tbh

The mecha design was a bit of a rip off of Zone of the Enders as was the the whole human/hybrid infused thingy a bit like Z.O.E the 2nd Runner

Surrogates. It start off quite well, the robots are cool and so are some of the effects. The story even seems to be going somewhere, until the end just makes absolutely no sense. I seriously heard quite a few people in the cinema go "Eh?" as it ended. Not even wiki can tell me what happeend because it doesn't know itself

What the shit, dude? It's not a good film by any stretch of the imagination but the ending made perfect sense.

I really quite liked the concept of the film and thought there was a lot of scope there for them to do something far more interesting than they actually did.

Also, I've just checked Wiki, which basically says what I've just said. So, what didn't make sense.

Yes, Brad Dourif. An actor's actor. I've never seen him less than brilliant.

Seconded. I can't think of a performance I haven't enjoyed seeing him in.

My latest was catching up on Battlestar Galactica. I mentioned the pilot miniseries in the old thread, watched seasons one and two soon after then powered through the last two seasons in a couple of days.

Utterly brilliant TV and I feel like a moron for skipping it until now. It shits all over the original with things having far more meaning and depth by picking up a nice modern idea of conflicted characters so the heroes aren't necessarily all shining beacons of wonderfulness. Add to that the Cylons being human replica's with human emotions, making them people rather than evil robots, made them far more interesting and all the different models and copies met throughout were portrayed brilliantly.

I'd heard a lot of fans complain about the ending. Those fans are idiots. It was probably one of the best TV finale's I've seen, leaving the core story wrapped up but still had a few unanswered questions to let the audience make their own mind up.

I've read that they had to really fight for the series to be kept on the air, but after watching the whole thing I have no idea why. It's one of the best sci-fi shows in ages.

I watched Red Eye the other night. A thriller from Wes Craven from 2005. It was fun; nothing special but nothing objectionable either... Cillian Murphy was good as the bad guy. I would agree with the IMDB rating of 6.5

Also I watched Dirty Dancing on tv last night.. I got kind of sucked in because I wanted to chill for a bit and it said it was over soon on the EPG. Turns out there was a news break and the film continued for another hour but by then I was already comitted. I've never seen the whole thing before; it wasn't too bad. Some real good songs in it as well (no, not 'time of my life'; that makes me think of the Sandals advert. But there are a bunch of good tunes in there).
JLM
I think Redeye's final act spoils things a bit and turns it from great to just "pretty good". Old Wes couldn't resist the stalker/slasher movie ending and it wastes the great sense of tension and unease that builds up before that. Cillian Murphy really is excellent in it though.

Red Eye also has the gorgeous Rachel McAdams and the godlike Brian Cox so I can forgive its tv movie tendencies.

Well gents, I was supposed to hit the town this weekend with my mate who was home from uni but he got sick which scuppered my going out and getting hammered plans. So we reacted in the only way we could to such a situation. We watched a bunch of dumb action movies.

First up was a trip to the cinema to take in Gamer, starring the rather bland Ger-ard Butler. It was between this and Surrogates. Frankly I knew both would probably suck, but I didn't care, I wanted the big screen and salty popcorn experience. Gamer is made by the directing team behind Crank, so I had mildly high expectations, at least from a frenetic action point of view. Sadly it's dull dull dull, Butler makes for the most charismaless lead I've seen in some time and it's just grey on top of grey.

It's not a total loss though, as Michael C Hall is a lot of fun, with his dancing/miming sequence to "I've Got You Under My Skin" being the highlight of his wacky performance. Alison Lohman is also in it and she's purty and the dickhead from Heroes cameos with a character with the greatest name of all time, that being "Rick Rape". Of course they do nothing with this character rendering said moniker a waste. Overall Gamer is like watching someone else play video games.

The popcorn was lovely though.

Saturday night and repeated attempts to get my mate out failed, so we hit the video store and kept the streak going. Inspired by Gamer we decided on Crank 2. I'd seen the first one and kinda loved it. For those who haven't seen either, it's basically Grand Theft Auto The Movie with everyone's favourite geezah Jason Statham running around doing mental shit for an hour and a half. Crank 2 is essentially more of the same and that's fine with me. Amy Smart is also in it which is always a plus. Bring on Crank 3 I say.

How do you follow such carnage? Easy. Make it a JASON STATHAM DOUBLE BILL. Death Race was up next, and it's gotten some pretty horrible reviews but it's really not all that bad. It's by the numbers sure, but the kills are fun and I wasn't bored. It also has what may be the hottest woman in the world, that being Natalie Martinez. For those who drool over Megan Fox and think she's amazing, forget that shit, rent Death Race and fall in love. Anyways, these two films made me realise something, that being Jason Statham, while he will never tread the stage on Oscars night, has more charisma than many of his pretenders, Ger-ard Butler included, and without him these films would likely be half as fun.

Take note Mark Wahlberg, as last night I rounded off my action experience with Max Payne. Not much to say here apart from when Chris O'Donnell is the best actor in the movie, it's worrying. It's pretty fucking dull, all things considered.

Next on my list? Waltz With Bashir. What? I needed something arty to wash down all the explosions.

I just went to the cinema to see The Godfather. I've always wanted to see it but never actually got round to it. I really loved it, can't believe I've taken so long to watch it, I look forward to seeing the next one.

watched Dances With Wolves last night, all 3 hours of it. I've decided to catch up on a load of movies i own but have never actally watched. This was fucking great. Probably fell into my top 10 ever, it's a slow, quiet film but the relationship between Costner and the Sioux is hard not to get swept up into. I loved it. Oh, and i wanted to pound Mary MacDonnell. Milf.

Thank God it's not just me. I keep watching critically panned Statham movies like Transporter or Crank and really enjoying them. He's probably the best action hero we've got right now, but the genre isn't built around big names like it was back in Arnie/Sly/Bruce's day.

On your recommendation Nev I will now watch Death Race. Isn't Paul Heyman in it?

seen Gamer at the weekend

the concept is very nice, big corporation using nano tech to allow poor people to be controlled by rich people purely for the fun of a game and money of course.

was there a message in the film? or was it just 60 minutes of motion sickness and 30 minutes of slutty inuendo?

the film didnt work. on one hand you have the message of everyone will do anything for money and power, and that the people who pay to have money and power are bad, discusting no moral people. Then on the other your aiming your film at those people who just paid to watch some things blowing up, people being killed and teenage twins showing off their breasts! The very people who you just tanned in the film! Very mixed messaging.

An excellent concept just a shame there were far too much spinning cameras and weak script points to make it worth anything.

It always surprises me how many people haven't seen it. I pimp that movie to everyone. So many great scenes and indivudal performances, from Walken, Oldman and Hopper to an amazing Brad Pitt cameo where he makes something memorable out of a non-role that wasn't even a speaking part to begin with.

It was confusing, intriguing and kept me guessing all the way through.. very weird to see Ryan Reynolds cast in it too seeing as it was pretty recent.

Loving the love for Brad Dourif in this thread. The man is a fucking Actor, with a big "A". As Doc Cochrane, as Piter De Vries, hell, even as Chucky, he's been consistently entertaining for years.

But I'm surprised no-one's mentioned his turn as Grima Wormtongue in LOTR - he was one of the few good individual performances in a movie series that relied so heavily on special effects and overall plot.

After a spell of "every film I'm watching for the first time this year whether new or old is total shite" I am now currently in a fucking hell of a "goddamn every film I've been watching for the first time is awesome" run.

In the past month I've watched in this order for the first time: The Brothers Bloom, District 9, Drag Me To Hell, Grizzly Man, The Hurt Locker, Gran Torino and Brazil.

That's a hell of a run. I'm thinking perhaps Rescue Dawn next, but I'm gonna' be careful because I don't want to break this run.

Watched Modern Times today. Everyone mentions the scene where he goes into the machine and you see him flying pass these cogs and bolts but i found that only a small part of the humour. Slapstick wise i loved when he enters his shanty house, his roller skating in the department store and playing american football with the duck. I really liked it.

The most shocking part of the film is a scene when he's in jail and there is reference to the warden looking for 'nose powder'. Just happened to be white and got smugged across Chaplin's tasch. Kinda surreal, i know drugs and cocaine's been around for years but i never thought it was used for real comic purpose until much later.

Watched the Transporter Trilogy.

Loved 'em, first two were awesome, mad car chases & great fights, I thought the 3rd one was a bit weak though, the burd was annoying as fuck.

I love Statham, top dude.

In my quest to delve into bargin bin hell to find the odd gem I bought the following from one of those dodgy shops that are set up in closed high street stores until they run out of stock.

Shark Attack
Crocodile
Comic Book Villians
Mustang Sally's House of Horror
Halloween Camp 2
Rip Off

YEAH THATS RIGHT I BOUGHT A BARGIN BIN FILM CALLED RIP OFF, SO WHAT!

Usually I stick to two genres when looking at buying cheapies like this, horror or action. As a general rule these are the only genres you can derive any sort of entertainment from at the bottom of the bin level I look at. Here is were I came unglued. I should never have risked it. Last night I had the deep misfortune of watching Comic Book Villians. Which is packaged to appear to be a low grade Kevin Smith style comedy caper but is in actual fact a loathesome self indulgent neo noir. Sure it attempts comedy but its so pathetic its unfunny. It fails on nearly every level including logic.

There were many, many iritating things in the film but high lights include a complete and utter contempt for the audience it appears to market it self towards by essentially being the anti comic book film. Every character involved is the most repulsive cliche that really couldnt be more pathetic e.g. Greasy geeks with massively poor social skills and personal hygiene but not in a cool Chasing Amy/Malrats sort of a way but in a, these people are the most horrible embarrasing representations of 'people' I have ever seen way. Its like the film sets out tell the world that comics could only appeal to sociopaths and the lowest of the low in society. Not only slaping its audience in the face by the mere presence of the characters but essentially the ending is a full on punch in the nuts by having the 'moral' of the story be 'stop being a child and reading childish comic books and you WILL be much happier as you clearly cant be a succesful well rounded individual if you do'. Its so narrow minded that it is well and truely hammered home as well.

There is perhaps one reason why I would suggest watching this abortion. It could possibly be used as a example of how having the worst choice of music score ever has a derogetory effect on films atmosphere ever. Im confident had it been a mix of cool music and apropriate score then it may have made the afformentioned problems a little less painful.

Apologies if you read through that. I had to get it out. Frankly it serves me right for not sticking with my tried and tested formula of horror and action fodder. They rarely ever piss me off as much as this has. Also I must be a bit of a twat for not noticing the only critique on the back cover was from the IMDB.

Watched four films in the last few days. First up Let the Right One In. I enjoyed the film in that it was atmospheric, and a points creepy, but in no way was it as scary as some reviews have made it out to be. I also watched the Girl in the Park which is well acted but not a lot happens. Sigourney Weaver and Alessandro Nivola plays their parts well, Kate Bosworth is okay. Bronson is a different film, isn't it? Tom Hardy is awesome, and some parts are pretty funny - but the style of the film is all over the place. Finally, saw 500 Days of Summer today. An enjoyable little film thats pretty sweet if not groundbreaking.

TRICK 'R TREAT - 7/10

Just finished watching it there and a thought it was pretty good but I thought it might of been better after some of the reviews I read. It reminded me of some of the old Horror type films what didnt take them selves too serious like the Creepshow films, was a decent watch overall though.

Rocknrolla wasn't bad. It wasn't great either but it's worth a watch.

I watched Choke last night. I'd pretty much ignored its existence because I absolutely loved the book and the trailer looked a bit rubbish. As bad as the trailer looked, however, it still made the film look better than it actually is.

That's not to say it's a terrible film. I might have been swayed by the fact that it's very faithful to the book, eventswise. It lacks the poetic nature of the writing and any of the aura surrounding the story is lost in the translation to the screen.

On to the things that really bothered me. The line delivery is just atrocious throughout quite a lot of the film but I'd put that down to the other problem; that it's really badly directed. There's very few scenes that feel like a movie & not some TV production.

I've avoided it for the same reason - sounds like avoiding is a good plan.

I'm still on my TV show catchup. I got back to Firefly now I'm finished BSG. Nothing thrilling or that I'd buy. Bits of it are funny, the bulk of the actors are good but nothing that would make me gie up a few pennies to own it. Though I'll probably spend that much on my LoveFilm subscription by the time I'm done watching.

I also watched T2 the other night and forgot how much I enjoyed it. After all these years I still love the action sequences and the story. It has to be my favourite of the four.

Yes I have. Apart from the (possibly intentional) humour to be got from the piss-poor special effects (Mr. Fantastic looks like he's got pipe-cleaners shoved down his sleeves in some of the scenes), it's not that bad. It's about as entertaining as the other two films, just not as polished and with a less attractive cast.
