I'll be getting a PS3 at the end of the month. Does it come with leads so that I can play on my moniter? And what are the failure rates for the machine? Anything like the 360 R R O D?
I've only heard on one failing PS3. That was a mates who's blu-ray drive stopped reading discs, Sony replaced it instantly no questions asked.
Leads? How do you mean? It comes with basic composite/scart leads but you'll want a HDMI cable if you have a HDTV.
As in composite to vga / hdmi to vga. My moitor, although not even a year old, only has vga input, not dvi. I know you can get hdmi to dvi. I've been scouting around lookinfg for a lead but all I can come up with is this
www.hdfury.com I'll just have to play on a 14" for a month.

I have not known of any PS3's stoping working, its not like the 360's 1 in 3 so dont worry at all.
That's good to hear. Even though my 360 is 2 years old and is still running strong.
Unfortunatly sony dont do a VGA cable for the PS3 like you can get for the wii and the xbox360. A friend of mine plays his PS3 through a PC monitor, he had to fork out for an HDfury HDMI to vga adapter which set him back 75 quid. If you've only got VGA to play with thats your only option I'm afraid. Unless sony have released such a cable recently.

Saints Row 2 looks crazy as well, seems like they're going for the truly surreal for this one.
Sony with 2 big announcements.
2.40 firmware update is being released on Wednesday.
Also the UK is FINALLY getting the dual shock PS3 controller on Friday.

Yeah, I may well import one as well given Sony's ludicrus pricing.

No, it really isn't.
Not yet anyhow.
As far as I'm aware only 1 or 2 games are compatible with Trophies and In-Game Music and until the game developers release patches to accept these features. When or if the developers release these patches it'll be amazing.
Still, the in-game messaging doesn't go a miss.

I did also see Yellow, Blue, Green and Red see through but they might have been SixAxxes ones or special editions.

Update: Sony has suspended the 2.40 upgrade, following reports that it has fouled up some PS3 systems (see Joystiq for more). While the two PS3s we have here at CNET were able to install the update with no adverse effects, it appears that some users were considerable less fortunate.

The update is a bit shit really, trophies are a bit lame and don't appeal to me really, the XMB in game is good but doesn't seem to work right and my controller ends up not responding every minute or so when in the XMB so I need to hit the ps button then O before it works again.
I installed it myself. I havn't noticed any problems at all. My machine is only a few weeks old though, so maybe its only older machines.
Apparently the main problem people have had is the PS3 not booting properly. I've booted my machine several times since the update and havn't had any problems, phew.

I've had shitloads of problems that have only occured since the update. IIRC, I've been signed out 8 times, my connection drops the orange bar after about a half hour of playing on COD4 and then it's just random how it ends up playing from there and I've had a few screen freezes as well. My internet has been perfect as ever so I don't see what else it can be.
Some people can't even get by the wavy when you boot up apparently.

The wifes getting a new contract mobile phone and we might as well get one giving away a free 40 gig PS3 as I really want to give GTA 4 a bash and Metal Gear. I don't know a awful lot about them and thought I'd ask a couple of things to you seasoned veterans.
I've never played online gaming on any console ever so I was wondering is it as straight forward as hooking your PS3 to your modem? with the usual cables? or do I have to get PS3 specific stuff?
Is there price for online gaming? be it one off or subscription?
I'm vaguely aware that I might need to get firmware upgrades. Is this for specific games etc so I HAVE to get the PS3 online if I want to play some games? If so do you have to subscribe to get the firmware upgrades?
How if at all backwards compatible are PS3s? I read a while ago that it was only certain PS3s that could play PS2 games but don't have the foggiest which.
Any thing else you think I should know?

It's as straight forward as plugging your ethernet cable into the Modem then into the PS3, yes.
There is no subscription price it's free.
When connected to the internet the console will automatically tell you if a new firmware update is available. You must download the latest firmware in order to play online. As far as I'm aware you can still play single player games without downloading the firmware.
The 40GB PS3 does not play old PS2/PS1 games. The 60GB does/did but they no longer make them anymore.
Anymore questions let me know.
Cheers!

I've heard the 40GB ones don't at all at the moment but software emulation in the short-future should enable this.
Cheers for that TNA Inception. So there's no subscription to even play the games online? If that's the case then that's awesome. Now all I have to do is wait. It'l be here at the latest Wednesday I'm told. Just got Splinter Cell Double Agent and Burnout Paradise as my first games. So eventually an emulator will work for the ps2 games then that's cool. I'd rather be able to still play them on it but its not like I don't still have a PS2.

I'm 99.9% sure the 40GB cannot play PS2 games. Not to aware as to if it'll play PS1 games as I've never tried but I doubt it.
EDIT: Your right.

Well sort of. Just checked and the 40GB PS3 will play Playstation 1 games but it won't play Playstation 2 games which seems very strange. As mentioned above there is a patch in the works which will allow backwards compatability so we shall see.

That's correct it's free to play online. With the latest 2.40 firmware (Which they've pulled at the moment but it'll be back up soon) the FREE Playstation Network is really knocking on the door of the £40.00 yearly Xbox Live now.

As far as I'm aware the PS2 backwards compatability was hardware driven rather than software driven.
They removed the hardware chip for the 40gig machine.
That is why the playstation store is going to have a ton of "adapted" ps2 games released on it soon.
Gotta make that money somehow (very cheeky sony, very cheeky)

Not quite. It was hardware driven in the US version, then when it was released in the UK they took the chip out and replaced it with software emulation. Then for the 40GB model they removed it entirely.
Oh and Sony have denied any plans of releasing PS2 games on the playstation store. So don't hold your breath on that front either.
I have a 60gb and i updated and have had no problems "yet" was gutted when playing Pro Evo and my mate sent me a msg i pressed the PS button to reply while playing, to my horror the game never paused and Big Sol went on a 60 yard run and nearly scored.
Just a quick question. How do you uninstall the full games, like MGS4? I couln't find an uninstall option anywhere. Someone mentioned deleting the game data. How would I do that?
I don't want to uninstall it yet, but when I've finished it I will want to uninstall it as it takes up a huge chunk of my hard drive. If deleting the game dta is the only way, then, well, thats fucking lame. Sort it out Sony!!!

So... is everyone still addicted to COD4? I got my golden AK last night on the final prestige, I must say it looks awesome. Only the shotgun left to complete the golden guns, and that'll be simple as there's only two.

It's just been delivered! I too now am worthy of the gods in this thread.
I opened it up to start setting it up and its only got a free copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and the Blu Ray of Spiderman 3 inside it. Needless to say I couldn't be more stoked.
